Top pick: Stiley Living 3.6 m red oak handrail kit Best value: Newthinking suction grab rails, 2 pack – About £22.09 for two rails of about 30 cm, 4.3 from 8,470 reviews, score 8.6. Balance only, specification maximum 54.89 kg. Updated 22.10.2026.
A handrail is the rail you hold on a stair, a few outdoor steps, or beside a bath. In the UK you buy one when a flight has no continuous grip, when a few steps need a hold, or when someone needs a short bar by the shower. A stair kit is for a straight flight. A grab rail is a short bar. A suction cup is only a balance aid on clean, dry, smooth, non-porous tile or glass, clear of the grout, when you cannot drill.
A bar of about 15–66 cm does not become a banister, and screws belong in solid masonry rather than plasterboard. A stated kilogram is not a barrier line load. Height is measured from the pitch line: 900–1000 mm where England's Approved Document K applies, at least 840 mm and not more than 1.0 m in Scotland, and 900–1000 mm in Northern Ireland. These kits are not guarding. Length, fixing and those heights are in the [handrail buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/handrail/sub/handrail-buying-guide).

The Stiley Living oak kit is a 3.6 m red oak stair rail with stainless fittings at about £129, sold as three sections with an Allen key, screws and plugs. The star line is 5.0 from 12 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the score is capped at 6.0 because the review count is under 25. The title and the UK reviews describe a red oak pole, while the material field says stainless steel, so you follow the title. The length field says 120 cm, which matches one section rather than the 3.6 m run. The seller claims FIRA testing to BS 6180:2011, the certificate is not on the listing, and that claim is not building-control approval. The specification load line says 100 kg, while the maker PDF states 130 kg as tested by FIRA, and both Stiley kits print model 005-000. The kit weighs 2.5 kg, and the Best Sellers Rank is 15 in Handrails.
Pros
3.6 m red oak pole with stainless fittings at about £129
Three sections, with an Allen key, screws and plugs
5.0 from 12 reviews, a thin but positive sample
Seller claims FIRA testing to BS 6180:2011
Cons
Score capped at 6.0 because the count is under 25
Material field says stainless steel against an oak title
Length field says 120 cm against a 3.6 m title
Same model number 005-000 as the brass kit, and no certificate on the listing
Best for: You want a 3.6 m wooden stair rail and you will read the title rather than the material field.
Less suitable: A buyer who needs the specification fields to agree, or who treats FIRA wording as building-control approval.
The GUYAQ-U01 listing is two short black grab rails, about 40 cm or 16 inch in the title, at about £9.99, and the fixing is screws. The star line is 4.8 from 18 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the score is capped at 6.0 because the review count is under 25. Ten UK reviews stored with the listing are mostly short and positive, which is too small a sample to outrank a 4.6 from 2,673. A bullet says 500 lb and the specification says minimum weight 226.8 kg, a listing claim rather than a measured load. The brand field is GUYAQ and one bullet refers to FANHAO, while packs are listed as 2 and the items field says 1. The pair weighs 500 g, the material bullets say 304 stainless, and the Best Sellers Rank is 1 in Handrails. At 40 cm it will not serve a flight.
Pros
Two short screwed bars at about £9.99
About 40 cm, titled 16 inch
Material bullets say 304 stainless
Ten UK reviews on the listing are mostly short and positive
Cons
4.8 from only 18 reviews, so the score is capped at 6.0
Brand field GUYAQ versus a FANHAO bullet
Pack count disagrees with the items field
40 cm is not a stair kit
Best for: You want the cheapest screwed pair in this set and you accept a thin review sample.
Less suitable: A flight, or a buyer who needs the brand and the pack count to agree.
The Stiley Living antique brass kit is 3.6 m in three 1.2 m tubes at about £79, with two connecting brackets, two wall brackets, screws, plugs and end covers. The star line is 4.8 from 11 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the score is capped at 6.0 because the review count is under 25. A UK review says the instructions were clear and the end caps were the hard part. One UK buyer left the kit packed because the wall was not level and the screw points were fixed. Another was told Rothley brackets were not compatible, so a shop bracket is not a safe assumption. There is no kilogram in the specification, the load story is the seller's FIRA claim, and the certificate is not on the listing. It shares model 005-000 with the oak kit, the diameter line says 0.04 m, the kit weighs 4.5 kg, and the Best Sellers Rank is 17 in Handrails.
Pros
3.6 m antique brass kit at about £79, in three 1.2 m tubes
Wall brackets, connectors, screws, plugs and end covers are listed
A UK review found the instructions clear
Stated diameter 0.04 m on the specification line
Cons
4.8 from 11 reviews, score capped at 6.0
Fixed screw points on an uneven wall stopped one UK buyer
Rothley brackets were not compatible in one exchange
No kilogram in the specification, and model 005-000 is shared with the oak kit
Best for: You have a straight, reasonably level stair wall and you want a 3.6 m brass-finish rail.
Less suitable: An uneven wall, plasterboard, or a plan to swap in another brand of bracket.
The supregear GrabBar-Bathroom-20in-FH is a screwed 50 cm 304 stainless rail at about £22.99, with screws in the box and a stated diameter of 2.54 cm. Across 2,673 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.6, the largest screwed-rail sample in this set, which is why the score is 9.2 and this row is the top pick for a short drilled hold. The bullets say the bar can bear 136 kg, while the specification line says minimum weight 136 kg, so that figure is a listing claim rather than a measured pull-out. The title says indoor and outdoor, and one UK review fitted it beside an internal garage door. It weighs 320 g, with a textured centre grip, and the Best Sellers Rank on the listing is 3 in Grab Bars. At 50 cm it does not run a flight, and the included screws still need a wall that can take a pull.
Pros
Screwed 50 cm 304 stainless rail at about £22.99, screws included
4.6 from 2,673 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest screwed sample here
Stated diameter 2.54 cm and a textured centre grip
A UK review fitted it beside an internal garage door
Cons
50 cm does not run a flight
The 136 kg line is a listing claim, and the spec says minimum weight
You still need a wall that can take screws
Best for: You want a short drilled hold of about 50 cm and a large UK review sample.
Less suitable: A full flight, a renter who cannot drill, or a plasterboard wall.
Yes. The listing includes screws and describes a hidden-screw fit. It is not a suction rail.
What load does the listing claim?
The bullets say the bar can bear 136 kg. The specification line says minimum weight 136 kg. That word minimum is the Amazon field label on this listing, not a separate test.
Is it only for a bathroom?
The title says indoor and outdoor, and the bullets also name kitchen, bedroom and steps. One UK review fitted it beside an internal garage door.
The musbus MUS_GB1 is a grey two-pack of suction rails at about £28.71, for support on smooth non-porous tile, glass, marble, acrylic or steel, and the bullets say it is not for full body weight. Across 163 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.5, and the score is 9.0, the second-highest number in the table. The highlight says up to 500 lb, and there is no kilogram line in the specification, so that pound figure is not a BS 6180 load. The listing does not give a length or a diameter, which is why a higher score than the best-value pair does not earn an award. Number of items is 2, while the included-components field says no. The pair weighs 760 g, material is not stated, and the Best Sellers Rank is 18 in Grab Bars.
Pros
Two-pack at about £28.71, 4.5 from 163 reviews
No drill, on smooth non-porous surfaces named in the bullets
The bullets limit it to support rather than full body weight
Cons
No length and no diameter on the listing
Up to 500 lb in the highlight, with no kilogram
Included-components field says no
Material is not stated
Best for: You already know the reach you need and only want a no-drill balance pair.
Less suitable: Anyone who must read a length before ordering, or who needs a kilogram they can compare.
The QWORK WD11468 is a 66 cm black U-rail at about £25.98, titled for one to three steps, while a bullet says one to four stairs. Across 37 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.4, which is 8.8 on this page. Neither step count is a full flight, and the listing does not name a steel grade or a load. One UK review reports rust at a joint after two weeks outside. Another UK buyer removed pebble-dash before the bracket would sit. The diameter is stated as 2.6 cm, the rail weighs 1.8 kg, and the Best Sellers Rank is 48 in Handrails. Hardware is claimed in the highlights, while the included-components field is empty, so treat the box contents as unconfirmed until it arrives.
Pros
66 cm U-rail at about £25.98 for a few steps
4.4 from 37 amazon.co.uk reviews, score 8.8
Stated diameter 2.6 cm
Screw fixing, with hardware claimed
Cons
Title says 1–3 steps and a bullet says 1–4 stairs
No steel grade and no load on the listing
One UK review reports rust at a joint after two weeks outside
Pebble-dash had to be removed before a bracket sat
Best for: You have one to three outdoor steps and you will watch the joints for rust.
Less suitable: A full flight, or an outdoor joint you cannot repaint if it rusts.
Newthinking's two white suction rails are about 30 cm each at about £22.09, and the listing says no tools or drilling on flat non-porous surfaces, clear of the grout line. Across 8,470 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.3, and the score is 8.6. That price for a pair, against the largest review count here, is why this row is best value when you only need a no-drill balance aid. The bullets say balance assistance only, not body-weight leverage, and the specification maximum is 54.89 kg. UK reviews describe a strong hold on large smooth tiles, and one review says a cup fell off after nearly two years, which matches the listing's instruction to check and reattach. A third dimension is printed as 0.25 cm, the set weighs 690 g, and the Best Sellers Rank is 1 in Grab Bars. Suffolk County Council does not advise suction-style grab rails, so this pair is a poor stand-in when someone must haul their weight.
Pros
Two rails of about 30 cm at about £22.09, no drill
4.3 from 8,470 amazon.co.uk reviews
UK reviews describe a strong hold on large smooth tiles
The listing tells you to check and reattach the cups
Cons
Balance assistance only, specification maximum 54.89 kg
One review says a cup fell off after nearly two years
A printed dimension of 0.25 cm is not a useful thickness
Suffolk County Council does not advise suction-style grab rails
Best for: You need a no-drill balance aid on large smooth tile and you will re-check the cups.
Less suitable: Anyone who must pull their body weight, or a wall that is not smooth non-porous tile.
Yes. The listing says no tools or drilling, on flat non-porous surfaces, and not across a grout line.
Will they take my full weight?
The bullets say balance assistance only, not body-weight leverage. The specification maximum is 54.89 kg.
Do they stay up?
UK reviews describe a strong hold on large smooth tiles. One review says a cup fell off after nearly two years, and the listing says to check and reattach.
The TAILI AWW616-SILVER-EU listing is a 15 cm silver suction handle at about £38.99, described as a 50 kg stability aid and not a full body-weight hold. Across 314 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.3 and the score is 8.6, but only one of the first 50 review blocks is labelled United Kingdom. That UK review says the cups grip tiles well and that getting them off is the problem. The rest of that sample is not UK opinion, so the star line is a weak guide to British bathrooms. Number of packs is 1 and number of items is 2, and the title does not say a two-pack, so the count is unresolved. Tile size is not stated on the listing. The piece weighs 1 kg, the material is ABS with a metallic coating, and the Best Sellers Rank is 173 in Grab Bars.
Pros
Compact 15 cm grip at about £38.99
The one UK review in the first 50 says the cups grip tiles
Described as a stability aid rather than a full body-weight hold
Cons
Only one of the first 50 reviews is labelled United Kingdom
Packs say 1 and items say 2, so the count is unresolved
Tile size is not stated, and removal was the problem in that UK review
15 cm is a local hold, not a stair rail
Best for: You want a very short suction handle and you accept thin UK review evidence.
Less suitable: A stair, a counted two-pack you can verify, or a decision that needs UK reviews.
The LEVERLOC AW677 is one 31 cm grey suction rail at about £22.99, and the listing says you clean the wall, press for about five seconds, then lock the latches. Across 5,947 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.2, and the score is 8.4. The bullets claim a 110 kg maximum and also say balance assistance only, telling you not to support body weight on it. The specification line says minimum weight 110 kg, so the word minimum is the Amazon field label on this listing. It asks for airtight, smooth, non-porous tile, glass or similar, larger than 10 × 10 cm. UK reviews include both a firm hold and a rail that drops off. The piece weighs 460 g, includes a side handle, and the Best Sellers Rank is 1 in Bathtub Rails.
Pros
One 31 cm rail at about £22.99, no tools
4.2 from 5,947 amazon.co.uk reviews
Press for about five seconds, then lock the latches
Tile size is stated: larger than 10 × 10 cm
Cons
Balance only, with a warning not to support body weight
110 kg bullet versus a specification line that says minimum weight
UK reviews include a rail that drops off
Best for: You want one no-drill balance aid on smooth tile larger than 10 × 10 cm.
Less suitable: A full-weight pull out of the bath, or tile that is ridged, small, or crossed by grout.
The LIANTRAL SH7263-B1-EUK2-H is a black metal stair kit stated at about 3 m, at about £28.99, and you assemble, mark, drill and screw it. Across 44 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.2, and the score is 8.4. The bullets claim 70 kg and a 2.5 cm tube, while one UK review measured just over 2 cm and called the tube thin. UK reviews also say the brackets are fiddly until they face the same way, so you leave the clamps loose while you align them. The seller claims wood, brick, concrete and plaster, which is a wider wall list than the masonry-only plugs in the Stiley instructions. The kit weighs 3.65 kg, and the Best Sellers Rank is 2 in Handrails. It is a flight-length rail in this set, and 44 reviews is a modest sample next to the short screwed rail with 2,673.
Pros
About 3 m of black stair rail at about £28.99
4.2 from 44 amazon.co.uk reviews
A flight length rather than a bathroom bar
Indoor and outdoor use is claimed by the seller
Cons
One UK review measured just over 2 cm and called the tube thin
Brackets are fiddly to face the same way
The plaster claim is wider than masonry-only plug guidance on the Stiley kits
44 reviews is a modest sample
Best for: You have a straight flight of about 3 m and you can drill a sound wall.
Less suitable: A bath-only hold, a curved stair, or a wall you cannot identify before you drill.
The TAILI AWW302-BLACK-EU is a 38 cm black suction rail at about £39.99, with cups stated at 12 cm, limited to smooth non-porous tile of at least 12.7 cm. Across 8,464 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.0, the lowest star line among the high-volume suction bars here, and the score is 8.0. The bullets say up to 150 kg and also say not to put all your body weight on the rail, while the specification line says minimum weight 10 kg. Those two figures conflict, so neither is a load measured for this comparison. A UK review says ridged tile did not hold, and another could not release the cups and cut the rubber. The rail weighs 750 g, the colour field says Silver & Black, and the Best Sellers Rank is 5 in Grab Bars. At about £39.99 it costs more than the Newthinking pair without resolving that load clash.
Pros
38 cm suction rail with cups stated at 12 cm
4.0 from 8,464 amazon.co.uk reviews, a large sample
The listing names the tile minimum, 12.7 cm, and surfaces to avoid
Described as removable
Cons
150 kg in the bullets versus 10 kg on the specification line
A UK review on ridged tile did not hold
One UK review cut the rubber because the cups would not release
About £39.99 is dearer than the two-pack balance aid in this set
Best for: You have smooth tile of at least 12.7 cm and you will treat the load lines as unresolved.
Less suitable: Anyone who needs one trustworthy kilogram, or ridged, painted, or wallpapered walls.
The bullets say up to 150 kg and also say not to put all your body weight on the rail. The specification line says minimum weight 10 kg. Those two figures conflict.
Will it stick to every bathroom tile?
The listing limits it to smooth non-porous tile of at least 12.7 cm. A UK review says ridged tile did not hold.
Can I take it off again?
The listing says it is removable. One UK review could not release the cups and cut the rubber.
The Xyxu Handrail-SS-3m is a 3 m brushed 304 stainless kit, stated as three straight 1 m sections at 42 mm, at about £59.99, with brackets pre-assembled and screws, plugs and a drill bit in the box. The listing shows 3.0 from 1 amazon.co.uk review, labelled United Kingdom, and the score is capped at 6.0. That review says the screws are short and the plastic plugs are basic for a bannister pull. The specification says a maximum of 150 kg, which is a listing line rather than a measured load. The brand is Xyxu and the manufacturer field says Xinyxu, and a width of 0.06 m sits beside the 42 mm tube. There is no curved-rail claim. The kit weighs 4.5 kg, and the Best Sellers Rank is 20 in Handrails.
Pros
3 m of stated 42 mm 304 stainless at about £59.99
Three straight 1 m sections with brackets pre-assembled
Screws, plugs and a drill bit are included
The single review is labelled United Kingdom
Cons
3.0 from 1 review, score capped at 6.0
That review says the screws are short and the plugs are basic
Brand Xyxu versus manufacturer Xinyxu
Width 0.06 m sits beside a 42 mm tube, and the stair must be straight
Best for: You want a 3 m stainless tube and you will choose fixings for the wall you actually have.
Less suitable: A curved stair, or a buyer who needs more than one review before trusting the supplied plugs.
The listing asks the question. The bullets describe three straight 1 m sections. There is no curved-rail claim.
Are the supplied plugs enough?
The only review says the screws are short and the plastic plugs are basic for a bannister pull. Choose fixings for the wall you actually have.
How many people have reviewed it here?
The listing shows 3.0 from 1 review. That review is labelled United Kingdom.
How we compared
Shelf prices, stars and review counts are the amazon.co.uk snapshot of 19 October 2026 already stored for these twelve listings: five suction grab rails, three short screwed rails and four stair kits. The stored score is round(stars / 5 × 100). If the saved review count is under 25, that score is capped at 60. On this page the figure is shown on a 1–10 scale, the stored score divided by 10, so 92 is 9.2. This is not a pull-out test, a suction test, or a check against BS 6180. The top pick is the highest score. Best value is a different listing. A higher stored number does not take that badge when the listing cannot say what you are buying.
1
Scaled star line
70%
The published score is round(stars / 5 × 100). A 4.6 from a large sample is 92, shown here as 9.2. A 4.3 is 86, shown as 8.6. This is the amazon.co.uk line, not a laboratory score. It is not added to the cap.
2
Review-count cap
30%
If the saved review count is under 25, the scaled score is capped at 60, shown here as 6.0. A 5.0 from 12 reviews cannot outrank a 4.6 from 2,673. The cap replaces the scaled score. It is not a mark added on top.

Handrail buying guide
You are choosing a stair kit, a short screwed bar, or a suction balance aid, and they are not substitutes. The twelve amazon.co.uk listings captured on 19 October 2026 run from about £9.99 to about £129. Length and the wall decide the row. The top pick is the supregear 50 cm screwed rail when you can drill and you want the largest screwed review sample. Best value is the Newthinking pair when you only need a no-drill balance aid on large smooth tile. A 15–66 cm bar will not run a flight.
What is a handrail?
A handrail in a UK house is either a stair or step rail you screw to a sound wall, or a short grab rail by a bath. The twelve amazon.co.uk listings captured on 19 October 2026 are the rails themselves, from about £9.99 to about £129. A straight flight needs a kit of about 3 m or 3.6 m. A bar of 15–66 cm does not become a banister. That split is the point of the [stair rail or grab rail](/hub/diy-supplies/handrail/sub/handrail-stair-or-grab-rail) guide.
Fixing is the next check.
Best for
A short screwed hold on masonry, where a large UK review sample matters
A straight flight of about 3 m or 3.6 m, if you can identify the wall before you drill
Not ideal for
A full-weight pull from a suction cup, or a plasterboard partition
A curved stair, or a flight bought as a 15–66 cm bar
Mistakes to avoid
1
A bathroom length for a flight
A 15–66 cm bar is a local hold. A straight flight in this set is a 3 m or 3.6 m kit. Measure the run before you treat a grab rail as a banister.
2
One height for the whole UK
Measure from the pitch line. England and Northern Ireland use 900–1000 mm where those documents apply. Scotland asks for at least 840 mm and not more than 1.0 m. Do not take the height from the landing floor.
3
A listing kilogram as a test
A kilogram, a 500 lb highlight, or a line that says minimum weight is not a BS 6180 load. FIRA wording on the Stiley kits is the seller's claim, not building-control approval.
What to weigh up
Job, length and the wall
High
A straight flight needs a stair kit of about 3 m or 3.6 m. A 15–66 cm bar does not become a banister. Screws belong in solid masonry. The Stiley instructions say the plugs are masonry-only and the rail should not go on a plasterboard partition. Suction is only for clean, dry, smooth, non-porous tile or glass, clear of the grout, and at least as large as that listing's tile size. LEVERLOC asks for more than 10 × 10 cm.
Load lines, height and the sample
High
The stored score is the amazon.co.uk star line scaled and then capped at 60 when the review count is under 25, shown here divided by 10. A 4.6 from 2,673 becomes 9.2. A 5.0 from 12 stays at 6.0. A kilogram or a 500 lb highlight is not a BS 6180 line load. The black TAILI bullets say 150 kg and the specification says 10 kg. Height is national: 900–1000 mm in England and Northern Ireland where those documents apply, and at least 840 mm up to 1.0 m in Scotland.
Which option suits you?
Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.
🛁
Short drilled hold
You want about 50 cm beside a bath, a door, or a similar short hold, and the wall can take screws. The supregear 304 stainless rail is the top pick at about £22.99, 4.6 from 2,673 reviews, score 9.2. Screws are in the box. The 136 kg line is a listing claim. It does not run a flight, and it is the wrong rail for plasterboard.
You cannot drill, the tile is large, smooth and non-porous, and you only need a balance aid. The Newthinking two-pack is best value at about £22.09, about 30 cm each, 4.3 from 8,470 reviews, score 8.6. The listing says balance only, with a specification maximum of 54.89 kg. Check the cups again. Suffolk County Council does not advise suction-style grab rails.
You have a straight flight of about 3 m and a wall you can drill. The LIANTRAL black metal kit is about £28.99, 4.2 from 44 reviews, score 8.4. One UK review measured the tube at just over 2 cm and called it thin. The brackets are fiddly to face the same way. It is not a bathroom suction bar, and 44 reviews is a modest sample.
The top pick is the supregear 50 cm 304 stainless grab rail at about £22.99. It scores 9.2, the highest here, from 4.6 across 2,673 amazon.co.uk reviews, with screws in the box. The 136 kg line is a listing claim, and the specification says minimum weight. At 50 cm it does not run a flight, and the wall still has to take a screw. This is not a laboratory pull-out test.
Which handrail is best value?
Best value is the Newthinking two-pack at about £22.09, score 8.6, 4.3 from 8,470 reviews. Each rail is about 30 cm. The listing says balance assistance only, and the specification maximum is 54.89 kg. Suffolk County Council does not advise suction-style grab rails. One review says a cup fell off after nearly two years, which matches the instruction to check and reattach. It is the wrong row if someone must haul their weight.
How high should a handrail be in the UK?
There is not one handrail height for the whole UK. Measure from the pitch line, not from the landing floor. England's Approved Document K, paragraph 1.34, gives 900–1000 mm, and both sides if the stair is 1000 mm or wider. Scotland's domestic handbook, January 2025, clause 4.3.15, asks for at least 840 mm and not more than 1.0 m. Northern Ireland Technical Booklet H, paragraph 3.27, uses 900–1000 mm. Diagram 1.13 does not bind every private house.
When is a suction handrail acceptable?
Suction is a balance aid on clean, dry, smooth, non-porous tile or glass, clear of the grout, and only when the tile is at least as large as that listing states. Newthinking, LEVERLOC and Musbus say balance only. Suffolk County Council does not advise suction-style grab rails. UK reviews here include cups that drop off and cups that will not release. If the person must pull their body weight, use a screwed rail and get advice. A suction cup does not become a stair kit.
Do I need a stair kit or a short grab rail?
A straight flight needs a kit of about 3 m or 3.6 m. A bar of 15–66 cm is a local hold by a bath, a door, or a few steps. The QWORK rail is 66 cm, titled for one to three steps. The LIANTRAL kit is about 3 m and needs drilling. The two Stiley kits are 3.6 m. None of the suction bars in this set runs a flight, and a curved stair is outside every kit here.
Does a FIRA claim mean building-control approval?
No. Both Stiley listings say the kit was tested by FIRA to BS 6180:2011. The certificate is not on the listing. The maker PDF states 130 kg, while the oak specification line says 100 kg and the brass kit has no kilogram. That wording is the seller's claim. It is not building-control sign-off, and it does not make the two kits the same product even though both print model 005-000.
Is a handrail the same as a barrier?
These kits are a grip, not guarding. A handrail does not become a barrier because the listing quotes a kilogram. BS 6180:2011 Table 2 is a barrier line load. A published extract shows 0.36 kN/m inside a single-family dwelling, excluding external balconies, and 0.74 kN/m for other residential cases. If you need the barrier rather than the grip, start with the railing comparison. Workplace stairs sit under regulation 12(5) of the 1992 workplace regulations.
When should I call a professional?
Call a professional for plasterboard or a wall you cannot identify, for hidden cables or pipes, for a person who would be hurt if the rail failed, or for a stair that needs building-control approval. The Stiley instructions limit the supplied plugs to solid masonry. Do not treat a suction cup as the fix for that wall. Approved Document M, where Category 2 applies, asks bathroom walls to take later grab rails up to 1.5 kN/m².
Our verdict
The top pick is the supregear 50 cm stainless grab rail at about £22.99. It scores 9.2, the highest here: a screwed 304 stainless bar, screws in the box, 4.6 from 2,673 amazon.co.uk reviews. The 136 kg line is a listing claim, and 50 cm does not run a flight. Best value is the Newthinking suction pair at about £22.09, score 8.6, 4.3 from 8,470 reviews, about 30 cm each, for balance only, with a specification maximum of 54.89 kg. Musbus scores 9.0 and has no award: the highlight says up to 500 lb, and the listing has no kilogram and no length. QWORK scores 8.8 and has no award: a 66 cm step rail, no load and no steel grade, and one UK review reports rust after two weeks outside.
