Boat polish comparison 2026

The best boat polishes, compared.

Top pick: Adam's graphene ceramic spray kit Best value: Star brite Premium Marine Polish 500 ml – About £30.05, 4.3 from 100 reviews, for zero to light oxidation. Not a heavy-cut compound. Updated 22.10.2026.

Peter F.Editor

Boat polish on amazon.co.uk is four different jobs, and one bottle does not do all of them. A cutting polish takes light oxidation off gelcoat. A protection polish seals a sound or lightly oxidised surface. A colour restorer re-wets faded pigment and is not a compound. Buyers own a boat, a painted narrowboat, or a dinghy they would rather not send to a yard yet. Gtechniq and, and the spray kit, do not cut chalk. Naming the fault before the brand is set out in the [boat polish buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/boat-polish/sub/boat-polish-buying-guide). A cutting polish removes a thin layer of chalked gelcoat. A ceramic bonds after correction and does not cut. Gloss that only holds dirt needs a seal.

The best boat polishes in detail

Adam's graphene ceramic spray kit

Rank 1

Adam's graphene ceramic spray kit

∼£58

Our view

Adam's graphene ceramic spray kit is £57.96, listed at 4.6 from 973 reviews, the same star line as 3M 36110. The title names boats and 18+ months, but the first 50 reviews are not marked United Kingdom and they describe cars. A review in that sample says it is not a polish, a wax or a scratch remover. Those car reviews describe wipe on, a short flash, then wipe off, and missed spots if the coating is not levelled. The fill lines disagree: the unit count says 12.0 millilitre and the components line says a 12 oz kit with microfibre towels and applicators. No gelcoat sentence appears in the stored specs. The score matches the top pick on stars alone, yet this is a spray coating after prep, not a cutting gelcoat polish.

Pros

  • Boats named in the title, with an 18+ months claim
  • Towels and applicators on the components line
  • 4.6 from 973 reviews for wipe-on gloss on car paint
  • Reviewers say a little goes a long way on cars

Cons

  • Not a scratch remover, per a review in the stored sample
  • First 50 reviews are cars, and none is marked United Kingdom
  • Fill conflict: 12.0 millilitre versus a 12 oz kit
  • No gelcoat sentence in the stored specs

Best for: A spray ceramic on a prepared surface, after you have checked which fill the listing is actually selling.

Less suitable: Oxidised gelcoat, or a buyer who needs a UK boat review before paying £57.96.

Common questions

Does this polish out scratches?

A review in the stored sample says it is not a polish, a wax, or a scratch remover. It is a spray coating after prep.

Are the reviews from UK boats?

The first 50 reviews in the stored sample are not marked United Kingdom. They describe cars.

How much liquid is in the kit?

The unit count says 12.0 millilitre. The components line says a 12 oz kit. Both lines are stored. The conflict is unresolved.

3M Perfect-It gelcoat polish 36110

Rank 2

3M Perfect-It gelcoat polish 36110

∼£43

Our view

3M Perfect-It 36110 is a 946 ml one-step gelcoat polish and wax, listed at £43.49 with 4.6 from 919 amazon.co.uk reviews. The bullets limit the cut to light oxidation, small scratches and swirl marks, and they send heavier chalk to a heavy cutting compound first. You apply it with a rotary and a yellow 3M wool pad, or by hand on a small patch. In the first 50 reviews only one is marked United Kingdom, and that line is only "Great product", so the star count is not a UK boat trial. Reviewers who describe a result say light oxidation comes off gelcoat, including white gelcoat by hand, and that a buffer is quick when the chalk is light. Several still needed more than one cut, and one Canadian RV user found it harder than expected. The listing also says industrial or occupational use only, and not for consumer sale or use.

Pros

  • Stated for light gelcoat oxidation, swirls and small scratches
  • Polish and wax in one step
  • Rotary with a wool pad, or by hand on a small area
  • 946 ml at £43.49, 4.6 from 919 reviews

Cons

  • Listing says industrial or occupational use only
  • Heavier oxidation is sent to a cutting compound first
  • Only one thin UK line in the first 50 reviews
  • Reviewers still needed more than one cut

Best for: Light oxidation on gelcoat, with a rotary and a wool pad, after you have read the occupational-use line.

Less suitable: Heavy chalk, or a buyer who needs UK boat reviews before ordering.

Common questions

Does this remove light oxidation from gelcoat?

The listing says it removes small scratches, swirl marks, and light oxidation from gelcoat and fibreglass on boats and RVs. Heavier oxidation is pointed to a heavy cutting compound first.

Can you apply it by hand?

The listing says use a rotary polisher with a yellow 3M wool pad, and that small areas can be done by hand.

Is it sold as a consumer polish?

The listing says for industrial or occupational use only, and not for consumer sale or use.

Gtechniq Marine Ceramic Top 50 ml

Rank 3

Gtechniq Marine Ceramic Top 50 ml

∼£79

Our view

Gtechniq Marine Ceramic Top is £79 for 50 ml, listed at 4.5 from 74 reviews, with the country of origin given as the United Kingdom. The listing says it bonds to gelcoat and topcoat and that the best result is over Ceramic Base, with a pad and gloves in the box. Of 29 reviews in the sample, none is marked United Kingdom. Most are from the United States, and they mention beading on gelcoat, a jet ski and an RV fibreglass cap once the surface is prepped. One buyer was told to expect about a year and thought that poor value for 50 ml. A repeat purchase arrived dried. It is the dearest bottle in this set, and it does not cut chalk the way 3M 36110 is listed to do. Buy it for a corrected surface, not for a matt topside.

Pros

  • Marine gelcoat and topcoat named on the listing
  • Pad and gloves in the box
  • Country of origin given as the United Kingdom
  • Reviewers report water beading after the surface is prepped

Cons

  • £79 for 50 ml
  • No United Kingdom review in the 29-review sample
  • Best results are stated over Ceramic Base
  • One repeat bottle arrived dried

Best for: Corrected gelcoat or topcoat, when you want a pad-applied ceramic and you will use Ceramic Base for the result the listing describes.

Less suitable: Oxidised gelcoat, or a hull large enough that 50 ml will not cover the area you have in mind.

Common questions

Do you polish before this?

The listing says the best result is over Ceramic Base, and that it can go on a topcoat or gelcoat. It describes a bond and gloss, not a cutting step.

What is in the box?

Ceramic Top, an applicator pad, gloves, and instructions.

Are the reviews from the UK?

The 29 reviews in the stored sample are mostly from the United States. None in that sample is marked United Kingdom. Themes are beading, prep, and one dried bottle.

Star brite Premium Marine Polish 950 ml

Rank 4

Star brite Premium Marine Polish 950 ml

∼£48

Our view

The 950 ml Star brite, model 478008, is £47.95 and 4.5 from 54 reviews. The bullets say wash, use Restorer Wax on faded surfaces, let the polish haze, then wipe it off, with a second coat within 30 days. Of 21 reviews in the sample, 14 are marked United Kingdom, and they praise hull gloss, a narrowboat's paint, and a 20-year gelcoat that improved only after a compound and then this polish. A UK review says not to use it in the sun. Others call it expensive and hard work unless the machine stays slow. The step up from the 500 ml bottle is volume, not a different product name, though the grit line here says Fine. UK comments say a little goes a long way, so the extra money is the larger fill rather than a stronger cut.

Pros

  • 950 ml at £47.95
  • 14 of 21 reviews marked United Kingdom
  • Haze-and-wipe method and a second coat within 30 days in the bullets
  • UK comments say a little goes a long way on a hull

Cons

  • Faded gelcoat is sent to Restorer Wax or a compound first
  • A UK review says not to use it in the sun
  • Still hard work, and the machine should stay slow
  • About £18 more than the 500 ml bottle of the same name

Best for: A larger hull or a narrowboat you have already compounded, when you want the bigger bottle of the same polish.

Less suitable: A small dinghy where 500 ml is enough, or a chalky topside you have not cut yet.

Common questions

How does the listing say to apply it?

Wash, use Restorer Wax on faded surfaces, let the polish dry to a haze, and wipe it off. A second coat within 30 days is in the bullets.

Is the grit the same as the 500 ml bottle?

This listing's grit line says Fine. The 500 ml listing's grit line says Medium. Both use the Premium Marine Polish name.

What do UK reviews say?

UK reviews mention hull gloss, a narrowboat's paint, and a 20-year gelcoat that improved after a compound and then this polish. One review says not to use it in the sun.

Owatrol Gelcoat Restorer 500 ml

Rank 5

Owatrol Gelcoat Restorer 500 ml

∼£25

Our view

Owatrol Gelcoat Restorer is 500 ml at £24.64, listed at 4.4 from 453 reviews. It is a colour restorer that the bullets say penetrates and re-wets pigment, not a cutting polish, and those bullets forbid white surfaces. The stated yield is 18 m² per litre, at 5°C to 35°C, by brush or cloth, with excess wiped so it does not film. UK reviews in the first 50 mention coloured fibreglass on a sports cruiser, blue gelcoat, a chalky dinghy and narrowboat paint that avoided a repaint. Several of those reviews also cover gutters, doors and motorhomes, so the 453 is not a boat-only count. One review got a clean surface with no shine, another said it did not work, and a UK note says old wax has to come off first. It will not stand in for a light-cutting polish when you actually need to cut oxidation.

Pros

  • £24.64 for 500 ml
  • Stated for faded coloured gelcoat, at 18 m² per litre
  • UK reviews on a sports cruiser, blue gelcoat and narrowboat paint
  • A little goes a long way once old wax is off

Cons

  • Do not use it on white gelcoat
  • Not a cutting polish
  • One review reported a clean surface with no shine; another said it did not work
  • The review count includes gutters and motorhomes

Best for: Dull coloured GRP or narrowboat paint, once old wax is off, between 5°C and 35°C and out of direct sun.

Less suitable: A white hull, or oxidation you need a compound to cut.

Common questions

Can you use it on a white hull?

No. The listing says do not use it on white surfaces, because it is meant to restore pigment.

Is it a cutting polish?

No. The bullets describe a product that penetrates and restores colour, and say it replaces waxes and polishes that sit on the surface.

What do UK boat reviews mention?

UK reviews mention coloured fibreglass on a sports cruiser, blue gelcoat, a chalky dinghy, and narrowboat paint. Remove old wax first.

Star brite Premium Marine Polish 500 ml

Rank 6

Star brite Premium Marine Polish 500 ml

∼£30

Our view

Star brite Premium Marine Polish in the 500 ml bottle is £30.05, listed at 4.3 from 100 reviews, model 478007. The title claims UV protection and less fading, chalking and oxidation, but the review pattern is a protection polish, not a heavy cut. Of 43 reviews in the sample, 18 are marked United Kingdom, and those texts mention a narrowboat, a speedboat and easier cleaning after winter. One UK caravan owner would not recommend it after the shine faded. Reviewers often use a colour restorer first, and they say it needs a strong arm and some planning. It is the smaller fill of the same named polish as the 950 ml bottle, though that listing's grit line says Fine and this one says Medium. In this set it is the best value bottle when the gelcoat is already sound.

Pros

  • 500 ml at £30.05
  • 18 of 43 stored reviews marked United Kingdom, including a narrowboat and a speedboat
  • UV protection claimed in the title
  • Reviewers report easier washing after winter

Cons

  • Not a heavy-cut compound
  • One UK caravan lost its shine
  • Needs a strong arm, and is often used after a colour restorer
  • Grit line says Medium while the 950 ml listing says Fine

Best for: A sound or already corrected hull, including a narrowboat, when you want a UK-reviewed protection polish at £30.05.

Less suitable: Heavy oxidation, or a caravan if you expected the shine to hold on its own.

Common questions

Is this the same polish as the 950 ml bottle?

The title matches the 950 ml listing. This ASIN is model 478007 at 500 ml. The 950 ml ASIN is model 478008. The grit line here says Medium. The 950 ml grit line says Fine.

Have UK buyers used it on a boat?

Yes. UK reviews in the stored sample mention a narrowboat, a speedboat, and easier cleaning after winter. Other reviews are motorhomes and a caravan.

Does the listing ban white gelcoat?

No white-gelcoat ban is in this listing.

Gtechniq Marine Rinse-On 500 ml

Rank 7

Gtechniq Marine Rinse-On 500 ml

∼£16

Our view

Gtechniq Marine Rinse-On is £15.95 for 500 ml, listed at 3.8 from 67 reviews, the lowest price and the lowest stars in this set. It is a hose-on ceramic sealant with an up-to-three-months claim, and it does not cut oxidation. Of 38 reviews in the sample, only two are marked United Kingdom. One of those says half the boat emptied the bottle in about 30 seconds. Other buyers report little visible change on gelcoat, water spots that still needed a hand dry, and a nozzle that was missing or a feed tube that did not fit. The components line does list a dispenser nozzle and a hose connector. Some still call it simple, and cheaper than Ceramic Top, when the surface is already glossy. Treat the three-month line as a listing claim, not a duration measured in the UK reviews.

Pros

  • £15.95, the lowest price in this set
  • Hose-on during a wash, with a connector listed
  • Gelcoat named among the uses
  • Some buyers report easier cleaning on fibreglass that is already sound

Cons

  • Does not remove oxidation
  • 3.8 from 67 reviews, with only two marked United Kingdom
  • A UK review emptied half the boat's dose in about 30 seconds
  • Missing or unusable nozzle in some reviews

Best for: A quick seal on a hull that is already clean and glossy, if you accept a three-month listing claim.

Less suitable: Chalky gelcoat, or a job that needs a controlled pad coat rather than a hose feed.

Common questions

Will this remove oxidation?

The stored reviews do not support that. Buyers who wanted chalk removed report little change. It is a wash-down sealant.

How long does the listing say it lasts?

The listing says up to three months. A UK review questions how long it lasts compared with a traditional coating.

What arrives in the box?

The components line lists a dispenser nozzle and a hose connector. Some reviews say the nozzle was missing or the feed tube did not fit.

How we compared

Shelf prices and stars are the amazon.co.uk figures already stored for these seven listings. This is not a laboratory test. The card score follows that star line. The top pick is not the tied 4.6 spray. It is 3M 36110, the light-cut gelcoat polish, and only if the industrial-use label is acceptable. Best value is a different bottle: Star brite 500 ml at about £30.05 for zero to light oxidation. A 4.6 from car reviews is not a UK boat trial.

1

Job and chemistry

30%

Name the fault first. A cutting polish removes material. A protection polish seals. Ceramic bonds and does not cut. Owatrol re-wets pigment. The wrong chemistry cannot win the job.

2

Colour and surface

20%

Owatrol is not for white. A gelcoat compound is a poor start on a thin painted coachline. Do not polish antifoul. A spec line that disagrees with the title stays visible.

3

How and where you apply it

15%

Machine range, hand work on edges, haze-and-wipe, or a hose feed. Ceramic Top is stated for indoors at 5–25°C. Full sun and sealing over old wax are deductions in the advice, not a lab score.

4

Amazon evidence

20%

Stars and review count on amazon.co.uk. A large count from cars, or from outside the UK, does not count as a UK boat trial. The sample notes say who the reviews describe.

5

Value for that job

15%

Price and fill against the job the listing and the reviews support. The 950 ml Star brite is the same named polish as the 500 ml. The step is volume, not a stronger cut. The value award is not the top pick.

Boat polish buying guide

Match the bottle to the fault before you match the brand. A cutting polish, a protection polish, a ceramic and a colour restorer are four jobs. Price comes after chemistry, colour, and whether the reviews are from UK boats.

What is boat polish?

A boat polish on amazon.co.uk is one of four jobs, and the bottles are not substitutes. A cutting polish removes a thin layer of chalked gelcoat. A protection polish seals a sound or lightly oxidised surface. A ceramic bonds after correction and does not cut. Owatrol is a penetrating colour restorer, not a wax and not a compound. Buyers in this set own GRP boats, painted narrowboats, or a dinghy they would rather not send to a yard yet. Name the fault first. Powder on a dark cloth is oxidation.

Best for

  • GRP owners with light chalk who can accept the 3M industrial-use label
  • A sound hull or painted narrowboat that needs a protection polish, not a heavy cut

Not ideal for

  • Heavy oxidation, white gelcoat with Owatrol, or ceramic on chalk
  • A buyer who needs a UK yard price or a British Standard for boat polish

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Ceramic on chalk

Rinse-On, Ceramic Top and the Adam's spray kit do not cut oxidation. Correct the gelcoat first. A three-month or 18-month line is a claim, not a UK boat measurement.

  2. 2

    Owatrol on white

The listing forbids white surfaces. It re-wets pigment. It is not a substitute for 3M 36110 when you need to cut chalk.

  3. 3

    Slurry in the marina

Sheet the work on the Thames foreshore and take waste ashore. Do not put slurry, solvents or heavy detergent into the river, canal or marina. Do not treat 3M 36110 as a consumer product.

What to weigh up

Fault and chemistry

High

Powder on a dark cloth is oxidation. Thin colour is fade. A waterline band is often a stain. Gloss that holds dirt needs a seal. 3M 36110 is the cutting polish and wax in this set, stated by 3M United Kingdom for light to medium oxidation, with the listing limited to light oxidation and marked industrial or occupational use only. Star brite is stated for zero to light oxidation, haze then wipe, second coat within 30 days. Owatrol penetrates and is not for white.

Who reviewed it, and the limits

High

A 4.6 from 973 on Adam's matches 3M's stars and still describes cars in the first 50 reviews. 3M has one thin UK line in its first 50. Star brite 500 ml has UK comments on a narrowboat and a speedboat. Owatrol's 453 includes gutters and motorhomes as well as boats. Ceramic Top's 29-review sample has no United Kingdom mark. Rinse-On has two. The 500 ml Star brite spec line says metal. Adam's fill is unresolved at 12.0 millilitre versus a 12 oz kit.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Light chalk on gelcoat

Powder on a dark cloth is light oxidation, and you can read an industrial-use label. 3M Perfect-It 36110 is the top pick at about £43.49, 946 ml, 4.6 from 919 reviews. The listing sends heavier chalk to a cutting compound first. You use a rotary and a wool pad, or your hand on a small patch. Only one thin UK line sits in the first 50 reviews.

Sound hull or narrowboat paint

The gelcoat is already sound, or only lightly oxidised, and you want a protection polish with UK boat comments. Star brite 500 ml is best value at about £30.05, 4.3 from 100 reviews. Reviewers mention a narrowboat, a speedboat and easier washing after winter. It is not a heavy-cut compound. The 950 ml bottle is the same name at about £47.95.

Faded colour, not white

The colour is thin on coloured GRP or narrowboat paint, and the hull is not white. Owatrol Gelcoat Restorer is about £24.64 for 500 ml, 4.4 from 453 reviews. The listing says it re-wets pigment, at a guide of 18 m² per litre, and forbids white surfaces. Remove old wax first. It will not cut oxidation.

Common questions about boat polishes

Which boat polish is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is 3M Perfect-It 36110 at about £43.49. It is a 946 ml gelcoat polish and wax, 4.6 from 919 amazon.co.uk reviews, for light oxidation, swirls and small scratches. Heavier chalk is sent to a cutting compound first. The listing says industrial or occupational use only, and not for consumer sale or use. The 3M United Kingdom page states light to medium oxidation. Only one thin UK line sits in the first 50 reviews, so the star count is not a UK boat trial.
Which bottle is best value?
Best value is Star brite Premium Marine Polish 500 ml at about £30.05, model 478007, 4.3 from 100 reviews. The maker states zero to light oxidation. UK reviews mention a narrowboat, a speedboat and easier cleaning after winter. It is not a heavy-cut compound. The 950 ml bottle is the same named polish at about £47.95. That step is volume. The grit line says Medium on 500 ml and Fine on 950 ml.
How much does boat polish cost on amazon.co.uk?
The seven stored shelf prices run from about £15.95 to about £79. Gtechniq Rinse-On is about £15.95. Owatrol is about £24.64, Star brite 500 ml about £30.05, 3M 36110 about £43.49, and Star brite 950 ml about £47.95. Adam's spray kit is about £57.96. Gtechniq Ceramic Top is about £79 for 50 ml. These are the stored amazon.co.uk prices, not a live check.
How do you tell chalk from fade?
Powder on a dark cloth is oxidation. Thin colour is fade. A waterline band is often a stain. Gloss that holds dirt needs a seal, not a compound. Ceramic on chalk, and Owatrol on white, are the usual mismatches. The split between those faults is on oxidised gelcoat.
Can you use Owatrol on white gelcoat?
No. The Owatrol listing says do not use it on white surfaces, because it is meant to restore pigment. The guide yield is 18 m² per litre, at 5°C to 35°C, with excess wiped and old wax removed first. UK reviews mention coloured fibreglass, blue gelcoat and narrowboat paint. It is not a cutting polish. One review reported a clean surface with no shine.
Do the ceramics in this set cut oxidation?
No. Gtechniq Rinse-On is a hose-on sealant at about £15.95 with an up-to-three-months claim, and UK reviews say it empties very fast. Gtechniq Ceramic Top is about £79 for 50 ml and is stated over Ceramic Base after you polish. Adam's spray kit names boats and 18+ months, but the first 50 reviews are cars, and a review says it is not a scratch remover. The 12 ml and 12 oz fill lines conflict. That 12–18 month span was not measured on a UK boat.
What should you do with polish slurry?
The Green Blue says no specific UK law covers cleaning agents or recreational-craft paints in coastal waters, and points to the Water Resources Act 1991 for polluting matter in controlled waters. Do not quote 1991 fines as today's penalty. Keep slurry, solvents and heavy detergent out of the river, canal or marina. On the Thames foreshore, sheet the work and take the waste ashore. A solvent wipe is a different product from a gelcoat polish, compared under denatured alcohol.
When should you call a yard?
Call a yard for wet-sanding most of a cruiser, cut-through gelcoat, antifoul removal, or Ceramic Top if you have no indoor cure at 5–25°C. Practical Boat Owner suggests about 1,200 rpm so gelcoat stays cool. 3M's machine range is 1,200–2,000 rpm. Edges are hand work. Do not machine antifoul, and do not start a gelcoat compound on a thin painted coachline. No UK yard price is stored here.

Our verdict

The top pick is 3M Perfect-It 36110 at about £43.49. It is the light-cut gelcoat polish in this set: 946 ml, 4.6 from 919 reviews, with wax in the same step. The listing limits the cut to light oxidation and says industrial or occupational use only. The 3M United Kingdom page states light to medium oxidation. Adam's spray kit ties the star line at 4.6 from 973 and does not take the badge. The stored reviews are cars, and a review says it is not a scratch remover. Best value is Star brite Premium Marine Polish 500 ml at about £30.05, 4.3 from 100 reviews, for zero to light oxidation on a sound hull.
