Oxidised gelcoat: chalk, fade or a waterline stain

Updated: 23 October 2026

The cabin top has gone matt over a British winter, and it is easy to call all of that oxidised gelcoat. Chalk, faded pigment and a waterline stain do not share a bottle. This page tells them apart, then which liquid in our [boat polish comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/boat-polish) belongs to which fault. Products Compared, 20 October 2026, from amazon.co.uk listings and maker pages, not a yard survey. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If a dark cloth comes away powdered, you are in the cutting column. If it stays clean, you may be looking at fade, dirt or a stain.

What oxidation looks like

Practical Boat Owner describes oxidation as the matt finish above the waterline. White powder on a dark cloth is chalk. A thin smear of colour is a different fault. Gloss that washes off is dirt. Light powder is the only oxidation these polishes are sold for. 3M 36110, 946 ml at £43.49, is listed for light oxidation, and the bullets still send heavier chalk to a cutting compound. The listing says industrial or occupational use only. Star brite's page is zero to light. A lightly dusty white cabin side can sit with 3M if you accept that line, or with Star brite at £30.05 if the dust is slight. Heavily white after one wipe is past both. Once a light cut is appropriate, the steps are on how to polish gelcoat.

Fade is not chalk

Fade is colour that has gone thin. The cloth stays mostly clean, and a cutting polish only makes a shiny version of the same pale colour. Owatrol Gelcoat Restorer, 500 ml at £24.64, penetrates and restores pigment. The guide yield is 18 m² per litre, at 5°C to 35°C, with excess wiped and old wax removed first. UK reviews mention coloured fibreglass, blue gelcoat and narrowboat paint. The listing forbids white surfaces. Owatrol Direct says the same, and a note says the oil can look brown on white. Coloured and powdered is still a cut. One review got a clean surface and no shine. The 4.4 from 453 reviews also includes gutters and motorhomes, so it is not a count of boats alone. A tour of every chemistry is the boat polish buying guide.

What will not remove it

Gtechniq Rinse-On at £15.95 does not remove oxidation. A UK review says half the boat emptied the bottle in about 30 seconds. Ceramic Top at £79 for 50 ml bonds after imperfections are polished off. Put it on chalk and you lock the powder under the coat. Adam's spray at £57.96 names boats in the title and 18+ months. The first 50 reviews are cars, and one says it is not a scratch remover. Star brite does not become a cutting polish because the title mentions chalking. On a 20-year gelcoat in a UK review, it helped only after a compound. Cut first, then protect. Leave a ceramic in the locker until the cloth test is clean.

When polishing is the wrong job

Stop if you can see weave, a star crack, or a small glossy circle that looks like a previous cut-through. A machine will not put gelcoat back. A yard can measure what is left. You cannot see thickness from a pontoon photo. A brown or yellow band at the water is a stain, not oxidised gelcoat. Nothing in these listings promises that a compound will lift it. Heavy chalk across a whole topside is PBO's sanding route, a square metre at a time. Light chalk on a small panel can still be a hand patch. Once it is a stain or a thin gelcoat, talk to a yard.

Common questions

How do I tell oxidation from fade?
Rub a dry dark cloth on the topside. White powder is oxidation. A clean cloth and thin, milky colour is fade. Gloss that washes off is dirt. A band at the waterline is often a stain. Those four do not take the same bottle.
Will a marine polish remove heavy chalk?
Not the ones in this set. Star brite's maker page is zero to light oxidation, and medium to heavy goes to a cleaner wax first. 3M 36110 is listed for light oxidation and points heavier chalk at a cutting compound. A cloth that comes away heavily white is past both bottles.
What do I use on a white hull?
A light-cutting polish or a compound, then a seal. Do not use Owatrol. The listing forbids white surfaces, and an Owatrol note says the oil can look brown on white. White and only lightly chalky can sit with 3M if you accept the occupational-use line, or with Star brite if the powder is slight.
Will a ceramic coating fix chalk?
No. Rinse-On, Ceramic Top and the Adam's spray do not cut oxidation. Gtechniq says to polish imperfections off before Ceramic Top. A coat on powdered gelcoat locks the chalk in. Leave the ceramic until a dark cloth stays clean. Stars on a coating are not a cutting result.
Is a waterline stain an oxidation job?
No. A brown or yellow band at the water is not the matt chalk above the waterline. These listings do not promise that a compound will lift it. Treat it as a stain, not as a reason to buy 3M or Star brite.
When is the gelcoat too far gone to polish?
When you can see weave, a star crack, or a small glossy circle that looks like a previous cut-through. Heavy chalk that would need sanding, a square metre at a time, is also a yard job if you do not know the thickness. A machine will not put gelcoat back.
