Ceramic coating vs wax on a boat once chalk is gone

Updated: 23 October 2026

The hull is clean, or it will be once the chalk is gone, and you are choosing a seal. Ceramic coating versus wax on a boat is that decision, not a second chance to remove oxidation. A £15.95 hose-on bottle and a £79 ceramic do different work. So does the wax already inside a cutting polish. This page says when to use which, for the products on our [boat polish comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/boat-polish). Products Compared, 20 October 2026, from amazon.co.uk listings. We did not time coatings on a UK hull. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If a dark cloth still comes away white, do not coat it.

What each product is doing

Wax in this set is the film inside 3M 36110, a light-cutting polish and wax, 946 ml at £43.49. Buying it for a hull that is already glossy is a lot of abrasive for a seal you could have wiped on. Star brite is the simpler seal: 500 ml at £30.05 and 950 ml at £47.95, for zero to light oxidation. UK reviews mention a narrowboat. It is not a ceramic bond. Rinse-On, £15.95, is a hose-on film with an up-to-three-months claim. Ceramic Top, £79 for 50 ml, is the bonded coat, with a pad and gloves, at about 5.5 to 7 ml per square metre, and the listing gives the United Kingdom as country of origin. Adam's spray at £57.96 adds boats to a car title. The first 50 reviews are cars, and the fill lines conflict: 12.0 millilitre against a 12 oz kit.

What has to happen first

Gtechniq says to polish imperfections off before Ceramic Top, and that the best result is over Ceramic Base. Coating over old wax is how a ceramic sheets off. Coating over chalk locks the powder in. If the cloth is white, do not open Rinse-On, Ceramic Top or the Adam's kit. The cutting choice sits on the boat polish buying guide. Speeds and wipe rules sit on how to polish gelcoat. Only when the cloth is clean do you choose between Star brite and Ceramic Top. Ceramic Top's notes put the work indoors, at 5°C to 25°C, with residue off in about one to two minutes.

Time claims

The numbers on the labels are claims, not results we measured. Rinse-On says up to three months. Star brite's larger bottle asks for a second coat within 30 days. Adam's maker page talks about up to 12 to 18 months, and the amazon title says 18+. The UV glow is a tracer while you wipe. We will not say Ceramic Top lasts longer on a UK boat than Star brite. No source here ran that comparison. At 5.5 to 7 ml per square metre, 50 ml is 7 to 9 m², a console or a small deck, not a long topside.

When to choose which

Skip every ceramic, and the Adam's spray, while the hull is chalky. After the cloth stays clean, choose Ceramic Top when you want the marine bond, you will polish first, you can work at 5°C to 25°C, and the area fits about 50 ml. Choose Star brite when you want the simpler seal UK owners have described on hulls, and you will put a second coat on within about 30 days. Choose 3M only when you still need the light cut. The wax in it is not a reason to machine a sound hull. Choose Rinse-On only for a hose-down on gelcoat that is already glossy. Do not treat it as the cheap Ceramic Top. Neither ceramic nor wax removes oxidation.

Common questions

Is a ceramic coating a wax?
No. Wax in this set is the film inside 3M 36110, which is also a light cut. Star brite is a polymer polish you haze and wipe, with a second coat within 30 days on the larger bottle. Ceramic Top is a bonded coat. Rinse-On is a hose-on film. They can all sit on sound gelcoat. They are not the same liquid.
Can I coat oxidised gelcoat and skip polishing?
No. Chalk left under Ceramic Top, Rinse-On or the Adam's spray stays there. Gtechniq says to polish imperfections off first. Skip both ceramics until a dark cloth comes away clean. A protection polish will not finish heavy chalk either. Cut, or stop, before you open a seal.
How is rinse-on different from Ceramic Top?
Rinse-On is £15.95, goes on with a hose, and claims up to three months. Ceramic Top is £79 for 50 ml, goes on with a pad, and the maker quotes about 5.5 to 7 ml per square metre after a polish. UK reviews on Rinse-On include a bottle that emptied across half a boat in about 30 seconds. Same brand, different job.
What does 18 months mean on a boat?
It is a claim. Adam's maker page says up to 12 to 18 months, and the amazon title says 18+. The first 50 reviews are cars, not UK boats. We did not time any coating on a hull. Do not read that figure as a result for gelcoat.
Does the UV flashlight show the coating is still there later?
No. On the Adam's kit the UV glow is a tracer so you can see where you wiped while you apply it. It is not a durability meter for next season. Beading on wash day is a comment about that day, not a season count.
Which seal should I skip if the hull is still chalky?
All of them. Skip Ceramic Top, Rinse-On and the Adam's spray until the chalk is gone. Skip a fresh machine cut with 3M if the surface is already sound and you only wanted a seal. After the cloth is clean, Ceramic Top is the marine bond in this set, and Star brite is the simpler seal.
