Boat polish buying guide: name the fault you can see

Updated: 23 October 2026

The topside looks dull after a winter on a UK mooring, and a boat polish buying guide returns compounds, waxes, ceramics and colour restorers under one phrase. You do not need all four. You need the bottle that matches the fault you can see, then a price on the [boat polish comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/boat-polish). Products Compared used amazon.co.uk listings and maker pages from 20 October 2026, not a lab trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. A cloth test stops you buying a seal for chalk, or a cutting polish for dirt a wash would have moved.

Four bottles that are not the same job

A cutting polish takes a thin layer off. 3M Perfect-It 36110 is a 946 ml polish and wax at £43.49, limited to light oxidation, small scratches and swirls. Heavier chalk is sent to a cutting compound first. The listing says industrial or occupational use only, and not for consumer sale or use. Star brite sits on the surface. The maker limits it to zero to light oxidation, even though the amazon title talks about fading and chalking. The 500 ml is £30.05 and the 950 ml is £47.95, more of the same polish, not a deeper cut. Owatrol, 500 ml at £24.64, re-wets pigment and is not for white gelcoat. Rinse-On, Ceramic Top and the Adam's spray do not cut chalk.

Match the fault you can see

Oxidation, in the Practical Boat Owner sense, is the matt finish above the waterline. A dark cloth that picks up white powder is chalk. Light powder is the 3M case, and the case Star brite still calls zero to light. A cloth that comes away heavily white is past both bottles. Fade is a mostly clean cloth and thin colour. That is Owatrol on coloured gelcoat or narrowboat paint, once old wax is off. An Owatrol note says the oil can look brown on white. A waterline band is often a stain, and this guide will not promise that a polish lifts it. Glossy dirt is a wash, then another look. If the shine is already there, the seal is the ceramic coating versus wax page.

Limits that remove a bottle

White gelcoat removes Owatrol even when the topsides are dull. The ban is on the listing and on Owatrol Direct. A white, chalky hull is a polish or a compound, then a seal, which the oxidised gelcoat page takes further. The 3M industrial line removes that bottle if you wanted a consumer product. Star brite is the set with UK hull comments. Ceramic on chalk removes the Gtechniq bottles and the Adam's kit, because a coating bonds to the powder. The Adam's fill lines conflict: 12.0 millilitre against a 12 oz kit.

What to spend

Stored prices run from £15.95 to £79. Rinse-On is a hose-on seal. Owatrol is a coloured-gelcoat restorer. Star brite at £30.05 is the best value protection polish when the surface is already light. 3M at £43.49 is the top pick for light oxidation only if the occupational-use line is acceptable. Ceramic Top at £79 is 50 ml, about 5.5 to 7 ml per square metre, so a small area, and the maker still wants a polish first. Stop when the cloth is heavily white. That is a yard conversation.

Common questions

Is a ceramic coating a boat polish?
No. In this set a ceramic is a seal for gelcoat that is already sound. Gtechniq Rinse-On is a hose-on film with an up-to-three-months claim. Ceramic Top is a bonded coat the maker says should follow a polish. Neither listing describes a cut. If a dark cloth still picks up white powder, a ceramic will sit on that chalk rather than remove it.
Which bottle cuts chalk, and which only seals?
3M 36110 is the light-cutting polish and wax, and only for light oxidation. Star brite is a protection polish the maker limits to zero to light oxidation. Owatrol restores colour and does not cut. Rinse-On, Ceramic Top and the Adam's spray seal or coat. They do not remove chalk. Match the cloth test before you match the price.
Can I use a colour restorer on a white hull?
No. Owatrol's listing and Owatrol Direct say not to use the restorer on white surfaces, because it is there to restore pigment. An Owatrol note says the oil can look brown on white. White chalk belongs with a polish or a compound, then a seal, not with this bottle.
Is the hose-on ceramic the same job as the 50 ml top coat?
No. Rinse-On is £15.95, goes on with a hose, and claims up to three months. Ceramic Top is £79 for 50 ml, goes on with a pad, and the maker wants a polish first, with about 5.5 to 7 ml per square metre as a coverage guide. UK reviews on Rinse-On also say the bottle can empty very fast. Same brand, different job.
Does the 3M industrial line change the buying decision?
Yes, if you wanted a consumer product. The amazon bullets and the 3M UK page say industrial or occupational use only, and not for consumer sale or use. The star line does not cancel that sentence. If you need UK hull comments instead, Star brite 500 ml is the best value protection polish in this set, and it is not a heavy cut.
Is the 950 ml Star brite a stronger polish than the 500 ml?
No. Both use the Premium Marine Polish name. The 950 ml at £47.95 is more volume than the 500 ml at £30.05. The maker still grades the polish for zero to light oxidation. The grit lines disagree, Medium against Fine, which is a listing clash rather than a deeper cut. Buy the larger bottle when the area is large, not when the chalk is heavy.
