Ball valve comparison 2026

The best ball valves, compared.

Top pick: TAILONZ 3/8 inch male mini, pack of 3 Best value: JIVTO 1/2 inch BSP full port – About £9.98 with full port stated on a 1/2 inch BSP female valve, 4.3 from 18 reviews. UK reviews disagree about the ball. Updated 22.10.2026.

Peter F.Editor

A ball valve here is a quarter-turn isolation valve with a drilled ball and BSP threads, in brass or stainless steel. The same words also mean a cistern ballcock, which is a float valve and a different product. Buyers use the threaded valve on a tap feed, a rainwater butt, a heating circuit, or a small air line. Thread, bore, body metal, and a shown approval are how you judge one when the water is wholesome. On a public supply that judgement sits under regulation 4 of the Regulations 1999. None of the seven amazon.co.uk listings prints a WRAS number. None of these valves is 15 mm compression or push-fit. Matching the end, the bore, and the metal is covered in the [ball valve buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/ball-valve/sub/ball-valve-buying-guide). You use it fully open or fully closed. Anglian leaflet still says ball valve for a cistern inlet with a Type AG air gap. This set does not include a ballcock, a football needle, or a compression fitting.

The best ball valves in detail

TAILONZ 3/8 inch male mini, pack of 3

Rank 1

TAILONZ 3/8 inch male mini, pack of 3

∼£14

Our view

The TAILONZ pack at £14.49 is three 3/8 inch BSP male mini valves, nickel-plated, 250 g for the set, with 4.9 from 7 amazon.co.uk reviews. A UK reviewer sealed an air line at about 70 to 90 psi with the tape that came in the pack, and said the stiff levers loosened after a few turns. Another UK review describes a firm action on a coiled air hose, a handle that travels slightly past 90 degrees onto stops, and one poorly cast handle that still worked. The bullets say a black plastic handle, while that review describes painted die-cast metal. One captured review is about six 1/4 inch valves, which is not this three-piece 3/8 inch title. Pressure is not in the specification table. A claimed 1 MPa in a review was not tested by that buyer. Seven reviews are too few to treat 4.9 as a settled record, and the highlight's mention of water and fuel is not a WRAS approval.

Pros

  • Three 3/8 inch BSP male mini valves for £14.49
  • UK reviews of an air line at about 70 to 90 psi that held with PTFE
  • Threads described as clean, with tape found in the pack
  • Quarter-turn highlight, and stops that limit how far the handle travels

Cons

  • Only 7 reviews, so 4.9 is a thin sample
  • Bore and a specification-table pressure are not stated
  • Handle material disagrees between the bullets and a UK review
  • One review describes a different pack size and thread

Best for: You are fitting a matched 3/8 inch male BSP air line and you can live with a small review file.

Less suitable: You want a mains drinking-water valve, a stated full bore, or a star line built on more than a handful of reviews.

Common questions

How many valves, and which thread?

The title says 3 pieces, 3/8 inch BSP male mini ball valves. One captured review talks about six 1/4 inch valves. That review does not match this title.

Is a maximum pressure printed in the specification table?

No. A UK review mentions a claimed 1 MPa, which that reviewer had not tested, and use at about 70 to 90 psi on a compressor.

What is the handle made of?

The bullets say a black plastic handle. One UK review describes painted die-cast handles, one of which was poorly cast, and says the handle travels slightly past 90 degrees onto stops.

Bächlein 3/4 inch female brass

Rank 2

Bächlein 3/4 inch female brass

∼£14

Our view

The Bächlein valve at £13.95 is the 3/4 inch female-to-female listing the title calls full bore, with a lever, a stated weight of 280 g, and a seller pressure of 30 bar. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.6 from 603 reviews, and the captured UK comments are short: good quality, and good. Longer comments in the file come from other Amazon countries, including a stiff lever, a rubber sleeve on a handle that looked solid in the photo, and more than one report of a body with no ball. Those comments are not the UK rating. The material line says brass and stainless steel, with an inox finish, so the page does not establish a solid stainless body. BSP is not printed, the ports field says 1 even though the title describes two female ends, and there is no WRAS number. In this comparison it is the top pick on review volume and a stated full bore at a mid price, when the joint is 3/4 inch female and you can still reach the valve.

Pros

  • 3/4 inch female thread both sides, full bore in the title
  • £13.95 with 4.6 from 603 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Seller pressure of 30 bar, closer to a building-valve figure than 1,000 psi
  • Captured UK comments are positive, if very short

Cons

  • BSP is not printed, and the material line says both brass and stainless steel
  • Most long reviews in the file are not from the UK, and some describe a missing ball
  • No WRAS number, and BS EN 1074 on the specification line has no certificate in the file
  • Temperature is not stated

Best for: You have a visible 3/4 inch female joint, you want the largest UK review count in this set, and you will confirm the thread is BSP.

Less suitable: You need a printed BSP line, a WRAS number, or a body the listing describes as one metal only.

Common questions

What size and bore does the title state?

The title says a brass ball valve with a 3/4 inch female thread on both sides and calls it full bore. The pressure line says 30 bar. Temperature is not stated.

Where do the 603 reviews come from?

4.6 out of 5 from 603 is the amazon.co.uk listing line. The captured UK comments say good quality and good. Longer comments in the file are from other countries.

Is BSP printed?

The specification table says female thread, 3/4 inch. It does not print the letters BSP. No WRAS number is shown. The specification line prints BS EN 1074-1 and BS EN 1074-2 without a certificate in the file.

JIVTO 1 inch BSP male to female

Rank 3

JIVTO 1 inch BSP male to female

∼£15

Our view

The JIVTO 1 inch male-to-female valve at £15.48 is listed as full port and SS304, at 544 g, with 4.4 from 55 amazon.co.uk reviews. A UK reviewer fitted it as a shower valve and reported no flow restriction through the full bore. Another used it on a honey bottling tank with a bulkhead, PTFE, and thread seal, and noted that the handle can come off if the lever is too long for the layout. One UK review says water still drips through when the valve is shut, which would matter on air as well as water. A gasket shown in the picture was not in that buyer's pack. The model line says 2 PC, and buyers outside the UK read that as two valves, while the listing unit count is 1. There is no WRAS number, and the 1,000 psi line is a seller figure.

Pros

  • 1 inch BSP, male one end and female the other, full port stated
  • 4.4 from 55 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • A UK shower fit with no reported flow restriction
  • Handle can be removed, which helped one tight layout

Cons

  • One UK review reports a drip through the closed valve
  • A pictured gasket was missing from one pack
  • 2 PC has been read as a pair of valves
  • £15.48, and no WRAS number

Best for: You already have a 1 inch BSP male-to-female joint, you want the bore open, and you will test the shut valve for a drip.

Less suitable: You expected two valves, a supplied gasket, or a seal that the reviews all agree holds when shut.

Common questions

Does 2 PC mean two valves?

The model line says 2 PC male to female, and the listing unit count is 1. Reviews from outside the UK say buyers expected two valves because of that marking.

What did UK reviews use it for?

Captured UK uses include a honey bottling tank and a shower, where one reviewer wanted the full bore. Another UK review says water still drips through when the valve is shut.

Is fitting described as tool-free?

No. A reviewer removed and shortened the handle, and sealed the thread with PTFE and thread seal.

JIVTO 1/2 inch BSP female to female

Rank 4

JIVTO 1/2 inch BSP female to female

Our view

The JIVTO 1/2 inch female-to-female valve at £8.68 is the standard-port stainless listing in this set, at 127 g, with a blue vinyl handle and a seller figure of 1,000 psi. Across 4.3 from 27 amazon.co.uk reviews, buyers describe a smooth action, threads they call sound, and a replacement that held on a large rainwater tank. One buyer found the female thread slack on the male nipples already under the sink, and doubted that PTFE alone would make that joint trustworthy. The model line says 1 PC, which is a one-piece body, and the pack is a single valve. The temperature line is printed as 5 °F to 310 °F, a seller range rather than a figure measured here. No WRAS number is on the page, and the title's mention of gas is not a reason to fit this valve on a gas pipe.

Pros

  • 1/2 inch BSP female both ends, with standard port stated on the listing
  • £8.68, the lowest shelf price in this set
  • 4.3 from 27 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Reviewers describe a tight action and a rainwater-tank replacement that held

Cons

  • Standard port, so the bore is a restriction if flow matters
  • One review describes a slack female thread that PTFE may not rescue
  • No WRAS number, and the gas wording in the title is not an approval

Best for: You want a cheap 1/2 inch BSP female isolator on a visible rainwater or cold feed, and you have checked the male nipples for a snug thread.

Less suitable: You need full bore on a heating primary or a shower, or the existing male thread already feels loose in the valve.

Common questions

Is this a full-port ball valve?

The listing calls this a standard port valve, not a full port valve. Both ends are 1/2 inch BSP female.

What pressure is printed on the listing?

The specification table says a maximum of 1000 pounds per square inch. The temperature line says 5 °F to 310 °F. Both are seller figures from the listing.

Does the captured listing show a WRAS number?

No WRAS number, EN 13828 line, or EN 331 line is in the captured listing. The title names gas, oil, liquid, and water.

JIVTO 1/2 inch BSP full port

Rank 5

JIVTO 1/2 inch BSP full port

∼£10

Our view

The JIVTO full-port 1/2 inch BSP valve at £9.98 weighs 231 g and is the full-bore sibling of the standard-port listing, with female threads both ends and a seller figure of 1,000 psi. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.3 from 18 reviews. One UK review says the lever is not attached to a ball. Another UK review says it is a ball valve, and that the ball shows only when the valve is shut. That disagreement is the limit of this file, not a counted fault rate. The part number says 2 PC, which is the body, and the unit count is one valve. In this set it is the best value row when you want a stated full port on a 1/2 inch female BSP joint you can still see. It is a poor match if you needed a WRAS number or a 15 mm compression end.

Pros

  • Full port stated, 1/2 inch BSP female both ends
  • £9.98, a pound and a bit above the standard-port sibling
  • 4.3 from 18 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • One UK review confirms the ball is visible only when the valve is shut

Cons

  • A second UK review says the lever is not attached to a ball
  • Only 18 reviews, so the split is unresolved
  • No WRAS number, and 1,000 psi is a seller figure

Best for: You have a 1/2 inch female BSP joint where flow matters, and you will look through the port before you fit the valve.

Less suitable: You need a WRAS approval, a compression olive, or a review file that agrees the ball is fitted.

Common questions

How does this differ from the other JIVTO 1/2 inch valve?

This listing says full port and a 2 PC body. The part number is 1/2 inch BSP female to female. Pack count on the listing is 1.

What do the captured reviews say about the ball?

One UK review says the lever is not attached to a ball. Another UK review says it is a ball valve and that the ball shows only when the valve is shut.

Is a WRAS number shown?

No WRAS number is in the captured listing. The specification line prints ASTM, CE, and MSS SP 72.

Bwintech 1/4 inch brass pair

Rank 6

Bwintech 1/4 inch brass pair

∼£10

Our view

The Bwintech pair at £9.99 is two brass 1/4 inch female-to-female BSP valves with a wing handle, 200 g for the set, and 4.2 from 36 amazon.co.uk reviews. One UK review describes a metal handle with stops that limit over-travel, and another buyer used the valves on a heating flush rig. A different UK review says the included PTFE was poor, that no washers came in the box, and that the joint leaked until washers were found. One reviewer said the valves were for gas and not for water, while the bullets also name water. Several reviews describe a 1/2 inch male-to-female pair, which is not this title, so those comments do not prove the 1/4 inch female threads. Bore and maximum pressure are absent from the specification table. The title's 180 degree wording sits on a wing handle, and gas work is still not a DIY job.

Pros

  • Two valves for £9.99, 1/4 inch female BSP both ends
  • 4.2 from 36 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • A UK review of a metal wing handle with travel stops
  • Used on a heating flush rig when the threads matched

Cons

  • Bore and a maximum pressure are not stated
  • One UK joint leaked until washers were added, and the included tape was called poor
  • Some reviews describe a 1/2 inch male-to-female pair, not this title
  • Bullets name water and gas, and one reviewer said gas only

Best for: You need a pair of 1/4 inch female BSP brass valves for a visible air or flush point, and you will seal the male threads yourself.

Less suitable: You need a stated full bore, a 1/2 inch valve, or a listing whose reviews all describe this size.

Common questions

How many valves are in this listing?

The title and the set name say 2 pieces, 1/4 inch female BSP to 1/4 inch female BSP. Some reviews describe a 1/2 inch male-to-female pair, which does not match this title.

Does the listing state a maximum pressure?

No maximum pressure is in this ASIN's specification table.

What did UK reviews say about leaks?

One UK review says the included PTFE tape was poor and no washers were supplied, so the joint leaked. Another used the valves on a heating flush rig and was happy with the quality. One reviewer said they were for gas, not water, while the bullets also name water.

Gugxiom 2 inch stainless full port

Rank 7

Gugxiom 2 inch stainless full port

∼£19

Our view

The Gugxiom listing at £19.49 is a 2 inch DN50 304 stainless full-port valve with a stated weight of 1.06 kg and a blue vinyl handle. The bullets describe a two-piece female-threaded body, plastic sealing surfaces, and a 90 degree turn, and the title prints 1000 WOG next to a maximum of 1,000 psi. The saved listing has no star line and no review text, so there is nothing here about leaks, thread feel, or whether a ball arrived fitted. BSP is not printed, so you still have to match the female thread to the male fitting in your hand. The pieces field says 2 while the included-components line says one ball valve. It is the only 2 inch valve in this set, and it is the one to leave if you wanted reviews or a WRAS number before you spend £19.49.

Pros

  • 2 inch DN50 full port stated, female thread
  • 304 stainless claimed, 1.06 kg
  • 90 degree shut-off and plastic seats described in the bullets
  • £19.49 is the top of this sample, not a trade WRAS price

Cons

  • No customer-review line and no review text in the file
  • BSP is not printed
  • The pieces field says 2 while the pack is one valve

Best for: You have measured a 2 inch female thread, you accept a listing with no reviews, and you will confirm the thread standard yourself.

Less suitable: You want star ratings, a printed BSP line, or any approval number before you order.

Common questions

What size and ends does the listing state?

The title says a 2 inch 304 stainless full-port valve and prints DN50. The bullets describe a two-piece female-threaded valve. BSP is not printed.

Is there a star rating in the saved listing?

No customer-review line and no review text were captured, so no star rating is stored.

What does the listing say about the seal?

The bullets say the sealing surfaces are plastic and that a 90 degree turn stops the flow. A maximum of 1000 psi is also printed, and the title says 1000 WOG.

How we compared

Shelf prices and stars are the amazon.co.uk files captured on 19 October 2026 for these seven listings. This is not a laboratory test. None of the seven listings prints a WRAS number, so an approval is not a scoring bonus. Amazon evidence, listing fit, review outcome, and value make the score. The highest score is the top pick. Best value is the full-port 1/2 inch BSP listing under £10 that still has a review line. A 4.9 from 7 reviews does not outscore a 4.6 from 603.

1

Amazon evidence

30%

Star rating and review count on amazon.co.uk. A 4.6 from 603 scores higher than a 4.9 from 7. No star line scores 0. Reviews from other Amazon countries are not added to the UK count.

2

Listing fit

25%

BSP named, nominal size, ends, and a stated bore, with the pack count matching one valve or a real pair. BSP missing, bore missing, a material line that contradicts itself, or a pieces field that disagrees with one valve loses points.

3

Review outcome

25%

Themes in the captured reviews: a joint that held, against a slack thread, a drip through a closed valve, a disputed ball, or a review that describes a different size. A file of seven reviews cannot score like a file of hundreds. A file with no reviews scores 0.

4

Value

20%

Shelf price in GBP against a bore and a thread you can read. A full-port 1/2 inch BSP valve under £10 scores this block higher than a cheaper standard-port sibling. A lower price does not win the block when the bore or the reviews are missing.

Ball valve buying guide

Buy the joint before the brand. A ball valve here is a quarter-turn isolator with BSP threads, not a cistern ballcock. Match female, male, or male-to-female ends, and choose full bore when flow matters. None of the seven amazon.co.uk listings prints a WRAS number. Gas pipework is not a DIY job. Stored prices run from about £8.68 to about £19.49.

What is a ball valve?

A ball valve in this comparison is a quarter-turn isolation valve with a drilled ball and BSP threads, in brass or stainless steel. You use it fully open or fully closed. A part-open ball can damage the seats. The same everyday words also mean a cistern ballcock, which is a float valve and a different product. Anglian Water's leaflet still says ball valve for a cistern inlet with a Type AG air gap.

Best for

  • A visible cold feed, rainwater butt, or flush point you can still reach
  • A heating primary or shower where the listing states full bore

Not ideal for

  • Any gas joint, including a title that merely says gas
  • A concealed wholesome-water fitting whose material is not stated as CR or gunmetal

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Ordering a ballcock

A Part 2 ballcock is a float valve for a cistern inlet. A ball valve here is a quarter-turn isolator with a drilled ball. The same everyday word covers both, and they are not substitutes.

  2. 2

    Mixing BSP and NPT

BSP is a 55 degree thread. NPT, the US 60 degree taper, will not seal reliably on it. None of these seven valves is 15 mm compression or push-fit. Two listings do not print the letters BSP.

  3. 3

Reading 2 PC as two valves

Two-piece means the body, not a pair of valves. Read the pack count on its own. Wrapping PTFE the wrong way, or treating a gas wording or 1,000 psi as an approval, is the same class of mistake. PTFE will not rescue a slack thread, and gas work is not DIY.

What to weigh up

Ends, bore and thread

High

The first check is the job and the end, because these listings are threaded isolators and not substitutes for each other. Confirm you want a quarter-turn ball, not a cistern ballcock. Every valve kept here is BSP: female to female, male to female, or male. None is 15 mm compression or push-fit. BSP is a 55 degree thread. NPT, the US 60 degree taper, will not seal reliably on it. Two pages do not print the letters BSP, so you still match the male fitting in your hand.

Metal, claims and approval

High

Match the metal to the water and to whether you can still reach the valve. Ordinary brass can dezincify in hot or stagnant soft water. If the fitting will not stay accessible, Water Regs UK points to gunmetal or CR brass. These listings do not state CR, DZR, or CW602N. SS304 on the JIVTO and Gugxiom valves is not 316 and is not an approval. The Bächlein material line says both brass and stainless steel, with an inox finish, so the page does not establish a solid stainless body.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Visible cold feed

You have a visible 3/4 inch female joint on a cold feed and you want the largest UK review count in this set. The Bächlein valve is the top pick at about £13.95, with 4.6 from 603 reviews and full bore in the title. BSP is not printed, so confirm the male fitting. There is no WRAS number.

Heating isolator, full bore

You need a stated full port on a 1/2 inch BSP female joint you can still see, and you will not use the valve to balance a radiator. The JIVTO full-port valve is best value at about £9.98, with 4.3 from 18 reviews. UK reviews disagree about whether a ball is fitted, so look through the port before you fit it.

Small air line

You are fitting a matched 3/8 inch male BSP air line and you can live with a small review file. The TAILONZ pack is three nickel-plated mini valves at about £14.49, with 4.9 from 7 reviews. A UK review describes an air line at about 70 to 90 psi that held with PTFE. Bore and a specification-table pressure are not stated. This is not a mains drinking-water valve.

Common questions about ball valves

Which ball valve is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is the Bächlein 3/4 inch female brass valve at about £13.95. It scores 75, the highest of the seven. The title says full bore and a seller pressure of 30 bar, with 4.6 from 603 amazon.co.uk reviews. Captured UK comments are short and positive. BSP is not printed, the material line says both brass and stainless steel, and there is no WRAS number. The BS EN 1074 line has no certificate in the file.
How much does a ball valve cost on amazon.co.uk?
The seven stored amazon.co.uk prices run from about £8.68 to about £19.49. About £8.68 to £9.99 covers the JIVTO standard-port valve, the JIVTO full-port valve, and the Bwintech pair. About £13.95 to £15.48 covers Bächlein, the TAILONZ three-pack, and the JIVTO 1 inch valve. The Gugxiom 2 inch valve is about £19.49 and has no review line. No trade WRAS shelf price was in the files. These are stored prices, not a live check.
What should you check before you buy a ball valve?
Confirm you want a quarter-turn isolator, not a cistern ballcock. Match the end: female to female, male to female, or male BSP. None is 15 mm compression or push-fit. BSP is a 55 degree thread, and NPT will not seal reliably on it. Choose full bore when flow matters, because standard port is a restriction. Read the pack count separately from 1 PC or 2 PC, which describes the body. None of the listings prints a WRAS number.
Is a ball valve the same as a cistern ballcock?
No. A ball valve here is a quarter-turn isolation valve with a drilled ball and BSP threads. A Part 2 ballcock is a float valve for a cistern inlet. Anglian Water's leaflet still says ball valve for that inlet with a Type AG air gap. Ordering the wrong product leaves you with a float valve when you needed an isolator. This comparison does not include ballcocks, football needles, or compression fittings.
Can you fit one of these valves on a gas pipe?
No. Gas pipework stays outside DIY under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Gas Safe and regulation 3 bar DIY gas work, and HSE's domestic gas guidance points to a Gas Safe registered engineer. A title that names gas is not an approval. None of these listings is treated here as EN 331 certified. On a gas emergency control the lever sits parallel to the pipe when open, and that work is for a registered engineer.
When does a heating circuit need full bore?
Trade notes treat full bore as the right call on heating primaries, boiler connections, and showers. Standard port is a restriction. In this set only the JIVTO valve at about £8.68 is described as standard port. Use the valve fully open or fully closed. A part-open ball can damage the seats, so do not balance a radiator with it. The heating case is on the ball valve for heating page.
Will PTFE tape fix a slack thread?
PTFE belongs on the male taper thread, wound in the tightening direction. It will not rescue a slack thread. One review of the JIVTO standard-port 1/2 inch valve describes a female thread that was slack on the male nipples already under the sink. Tape for a sound male thread is a different product, covered in the PTFE spray comparison. Do not treat a gas wording in a title as a reason to seal a gas joint yourself.
Which metal should the body be?
Ordinary brass can dezincify in hot or stagnant soft water. If the fitting will not stay accessible, Water Regs UK points to gunmetal or CR brass. These listings do not state CR, DZR, or CW602N. SS304 on the JIVTO and Gugxiom valves is not 316 and is not an approval. Match the metal to the water and to whether you can still reach the valve. A concealed wholesome-water fitting of unstated material is a reason to call a professional.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Bächlein 3/4 inch female brass valve at about £13.95. It scores 75, the highest here: full bore in the title, a seller pressure of 30 bar, and 4.6 from 603 amazon.co.uk reviews. BSP is not printed, the material line says both brass and stainless steel, and there is no WRAS number. Best value is the JIVTO 1/2 inch BSP full-port valve at about £9.98. It scores 64, with female threads both ends and 4.3 from 18 reviews. UK reviews disagree about whether a ball is fitted. The Gugxiom 2 inch valve at about £19.49 does not take a badge: no review line, and BSP is not printed.
