Ball valve buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are at a stopcock or a heating circuit, and the tab calls every fitting a ball valve. This ball valve buying guide sorts the thread, the bore, and the duty before a title that says gas does the choosing. A quarter-turn isolator is a drilled ball. A ballcock is a float, and Anglian Water's leaflet still uses ball valve for that float. The seven listings in our [ball valve comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/ball-valve) were captured on 19 October 2026. This page does not rank them. Ball valve or ballcock

The mix-up wastes the order. A Part 2 ballcock fills a cistern and shuts against a float. If the photograph shows an arm and a float, you are on the wrong product. Every valve in this set is a screwed BSP thread: female to female, male to female, or a male mini. A female-to-female valve needs a male nipple in each side. A compression nut needs a male adaptor as well. The TAILONZ three-pack is male only, at 3/8 inch.

Thread, size, and bore

BSP is a 55 degree thread. NPT, the American taper, is 60 degrees. The two can start by hand and then weep, and extra tape does not turn one into the other. The Bächlein 3/4 inch valve and the Gugxiom 2 inch valve say female thread and do not print BSP. Size is the nominal thread, not the hole through the ball. A trade note treats 15 mm as lining up with 1/2 inch BSP, and 22 mm with 3/4 inch, as a screwed equivalent, not a compression end. About £8.68 is standard port and about £9.98 is full port. The Bwintech pair and the TAILONZ minis do not state a bore. Heating flow is on ball valve for central heating.

Pressure numbers and approvals

Several stainless listings print 1,000 psi. That is a seller figure, not a PN class. EN 13828, for building ball valves on potable water, is aimed at PN10 or PN16 and 65 °C. Bächlein states 30 bar, still a seller claim. Wholesome mains water sits under regulation 4 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. WRAS approvals are model-specific and last at most five years. None of these seven listings prints a WRAS number. If you cannot reach the fitting later, Water Regs UK points to gunmetal or CR brass, and none of these listings states CR, DZR, or CW602N. The metal split is on brass or stainless steel ball valve.

What to check on the listing

1 PC on the standard-port JIVTO means a one-piece body. 2 PC on the full-port 1/2 inch and the 1 inch JIVTO means a two-piece body, not two valves. The unit count on the 1 inch listing is 1. The Bwintech title really is two valves, at 1/4 inch. A title that lists gas, oil, liquid, and water is a seller's range of fluids. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 keep gas work with a Gas Safe registered engineer. Use the valve fully open or fully shut. A part-open ball can damage the seats.

What to write down before you order

Write four lines: the end you measured, BSP or not printed, full bore or standard port or not stated, and whether the water is wholesome and the valve will stay accessible. Then compare the shelf prices on the main page. Products Compared did not test these valves in a lab.

Common questions

Is a toilet ballcock the same as a ball valve?
No. A ballcock is a float valve on a cistern inlet, and some UK water-company leaflets still call it a ball valve. This comparison is a quarter-turn isolator with a drilled ball and a threaded end. A float arm means the cistern part. A lever and a BSP size are the signs of an isolator.
What size replaces a 15 mm compression isolator?
A 15 mm compression valve is not one of these listings. Trade sizing treats 15 mm copper as lining up with 1/2 inch BSP, and 22 mm with 3/4 inch BSP, as a practical equivalent rather than a matching end. You still need a male BSP adaptor. Measure the thread you will screw into the valve.
When is full bore worth paying for?
Full bore is the sensible choice on a heating primary, a boiler connection, or a shower. In this set the about £8.68 JIVTO is standard port, and the about £9.98 JIVTO is the full-port 1/2 inch. Standard port can isolate a low-demand feed. It is a poor bargain if you bought it to avoid a restriction.
Does 1,000 psi mean the valve is PN16?
No. One thousand psi is about 69 bar if you convert the unit, and it remains a seller figure. PN10 and PN16 belong with EN 13828 for building valves on potable water, at 65 °C. Do not relabel 1,000 psi as PN69. The Bächlein page states 30 bar, which is also a listing claim.
Do these listings show a WRAS number?
No. None of the seven pages prints a WRAS number. Approvals are for a specific model and last at most five years, so a similar valve in the directory is not evidence for these ASINs. Regulation 4 still expects an appropriate standard on wholesome water. If you need a current approval, leave this set.
Can I fit a valve because the title says gas?
No. A title that lists gas, oil, and water is a seller's media line. Work on a gas pipe is restricted by the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. For domestic gas work, use a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not treat EN 331 as met because the word gas appears in a bullet.
