Lawn edger comparison 2026

The best lawn edgers, compared.

Top pick: Roughneck sharp-edge lawn edging iron Best value: YL 94 cm half-moon lawn edger – Lowest shelf price at about £12.99, with 4.2 from 80 ratings, score 78, for light occasional work only. Updated 22 October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

A lawn edger cuts a vertical face where turf meets a border, a path or a drive. In the UK that is usually a half-moon iron or a step edger. Shears only trim overhanging grass, and a strimmer only knocks back soft growth. A useful lawn edger keeps a straight blade, gives you a tread to stand on, and keeps the joint intact in moist soil. Claimed working lengths sit around 92 to 110 cm, so the shaft has to suit your height. A carton near 40 cm is the parcel, not the tool. A one-piece shaft avoids missing bolts. A bolted three-piece shaft must arrive straight and complete, because levering bends a thin blade. Carbon steel can be filed, and it rusts if you store it wet. Stainless sheds rust and clay more readily. These hand tools have no mains plug, and listings do not cite a British Standard number. Stand on the blade, and leave frozen or baked soil alone. The Royal Horticultural Society method is set out in our guide on [how to edge a lawn](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/lawn-edger/sub/lawn-edger-how-to-edge).

The best lawn edgers in detail

Roughneck sharp-edge lawn edging iron

Rank 1

Roughneck sharp-edge lawn edging iron

∼£21

Our view

The Roughneck combines a serrated carbon-steel head with a one-piece fibreglass shaft, so it arrives ready to work without a set of bolts to assemble. At 1.3 kg and 1000 mm long, it is heavier than the 800 g Spear & Jackson but notably lighter than several 2 kg step edgers here. Its 4.5-star line from 449 amazon.co.uk ratings is one of the strongest combinations of score and sample size in the set. Reviewers often like the serrations for turf and roots, while the large treads spread foot pressure better than a narrow shoulder. A minority report bending or breakage, and not every buyer found the edge sharp on arrival. It suits a neglected or lightly rooty verge, but it will not make dry ground easy and a user who must stoop at 1 m may find it uncomfortable.

Pros

  • Serrated edge on turf and roots
  • Foot treads
  • No spanner assembly
  • Lighter than the 2 kg step edgers

Cons

  • Not sharp for every reviewer
  • Bend and break reports in a minority
  • Back strain if you stoop

Best for: Rooty turf when you want serrations and a one-piece tool with no assembly.

Less suitable: Very dry soil or users who find a 100 cm shaft too short for an upright stance.

Common questions

Is the Roughneck supplied in pieces?

The included-components line is one finished iron, 210 by 1000 mm. It is not a three-tube kit.

What is the shaft made of?

The listing says a fibreglass handle and a carbon steel head with a tumble-lacquer finish.

Will it cut thick, rooty turf?

The bullet claims a serrated blade for turf even when roots are present. That is a listing claim, not a measured trial.

Byhagern saw-tooth half-moon lawn edger

Rank 2

Byhagern saw-tooth half-moon lawn edger

∼£30

Our view

The Byhagern puts a saw-tooth half-moon, wide footplate and 100 cm handle into a substantial 2.16 kg tool. Its 4.5-star amazon.co.uk rating from 281 reviews suggests the design works well for many owners, particularly where teeth need to cross roots or dense turf. The broad platform gives a more confident place for your boot than the shoulders of a narrow edging iron. That weight can help the head feel planted, but it also makes repeated cuts more tiring and does not guarantee that the blade cannot bend. Reviews indicate that some assembly is required, despite the simple appearance. Choose it for a neglected edge if you can comfortably control a heavier edger; skip it if low weight or a ready-to-use one-piece shaft matters more.

Pros

  • Teeth for roots and dense turf
  • Footplate and long handle
  • 4.5 from 281 UK ratings
  • Gloves mentioned by reviewers

Cons

  • Heavy at 2.16 kg
  • Assembly still required
  • A bend is mentioned

Best for: Dense turf and rooty, neglected borders where a wide footplate is useful.

Less suitable: Users who need a light tool, no assembly or easy repeated lifting.

Common questions

Does the saw-tooth blade replace edging shears?

No. The listing is a manual soil-face edger. Shears are for grass that overhangs an edge you have already cut.

How long is the handle?

The product-dimensions line says 100 cm. Clean soil off the blade after use, as the listing asks.

Is it powered?

The power field says manual. No fuel and no plug.

Spear & Jackson Select Carbon lawn edging iron

Rank 3

Spear & Jackson Select Carbon lawn edging iron

∼£16

Our view

At 800 g and 92 cm long, the Spear & Jackson Select Carbon cuts a conventional half-moon edge without the weight or assembly of the larger step edgers. Its 4.4-star amazon.co.uk line is backed by 915 ratings, the largest sample in this comparison, and many UK reviewers find the blade sharp enough for a tidy border. The treaded shoulders give you somewhere to place a boot while the one-piece tubular shaft avoids bolts working loose. It is still a light carbon-steel tool rather than an indestructible digging bar: the review sample includes snapped or bent heads, and the edge can lose sharpness. Dry the epoxy-coated head after use because the listing does not describe stainless steel. This is our top pick for routine lawn-edge maintenance, provided you do not lever it through baked soil or thick roots.

Pros

  • Sharp enough for a tidy edge in many UK reviews
  • Light at 800 g
  • Familiar treaded half-moon
  • Large review count on amazon.co.uk

Cons

  • Some snaps or bends in the review sample
  • Edge can go blunt
  • Carbon steel still needs drying

Best for: Routine edging on maintained lawns when you want a light, traditional one-piece iron.

Less suitable: Baked clay, dense roots or anyone likely to use the shaft as a lever.

Colwelt 96 cm saw-tooth lawn edger

Rank 4

Colwelt 96 cm saw-tooth lawn edger

∼£28

Our view

The 96 cm Colwelt uses a saw-tooth steel head and an extra-wide foot platform to tackle turf, small roots and stony soil. Its amazon.co.uk line of 4.3 from 436 ratings gives it a much broader evidence base than several newer step edgers in this set. Positive reviewers describe thick steel and a strong foot arch, and some found the teeth useful in clay or around roots. Other buyers say those same teeth arrived too blunt to cut cleanly, forcing them to rock the head or return to a spade. The shaft comes in bolted sections and needs assembly with the supplied spanners, which is less convenient than a one-piece iron. It is a credible step-edger option for mixed ground, but not if you expect saw teeth to solve baked soil without moisture or sharpening.

Pros

  • Thick steel and a strong foot arch
  • Teeth help in stones and roots
  • Wide platform versus a narrow iron
  • 436 UK ratings

Cons

  • Blunt teeth
  • Fiddly bolts
  • Heavy for some users

Best for: Mixed or neglected turf when you want a broad tread and serrated head.

Less suitable: Anyone wanting tool-free assembly or a reliably sharp edge straight from the box.

Common questions

Can it be used on gravel?

The page asks the question. The saved listing does not answer it.

Does it need assembly?

UK reviews describe a tool that arrives in parts with nuts, bolts and spanners. It is not tool-free.

Why do reviews mention a knife or a spade as well?

Several of the first 50 UK reviews say the teeth were not sharp enough and they rocked the blade or went back to a spade.

Colwelt 102 cm V-serrated lawn edger

Rank 5

Colwelt 102 cm V-serrated lawn edger

∼£27

Our view

This Colwelt model is 102 cm long and uses a V-shaped serrated half-moon with a foot pad. Reviewers generally describe straightforward assembly when all the nuts, bolts and included spanners are present, and some consider it sturdier than cheaper irons that twist. At 2.02 kg, it is a substantial hand tool and its 4.3-star score comes from only 65 ratings, so the evidence is thinner than for the older Colwelt saw-tooth. The three-section bolted shaft also introduces joints that a one-piece iron avoids. A slight twist on arrival and awkward handling appear in the saved review pattern. It is worth considering when you want a longer V-serrated step edger, but the extra mass and sections are compromises rather than proof of greater durability.

Pros

  • Sturdier than cheaper edgers that twist
  • Serrated cut with foot pressure
  • Quick assembly when fixings are present

Cons

  • Awkward for some users
  • Bolted shaft worries reviewers
  • A slight twist reported on arrival

Best for: A user who wants a 102 cm V-serrated head and is comfortable assembling a heavier tool.

Less suitable: Buyers who prefer a one-piece shaft, low weight or a large review sample.

YL 94 cm half-moon lawn edger

Rank 6

YL 94 cm half-moon lawn edger

∼£13

Our view

At £12.99, the YL is the least expensive edger in this comparison and weighs a relatively light 890 g. Its 4.2-star amazon.co.uk line from 80 ratings is respectable for the price, and some reviewers find it sufficient for a soft, already managed edge. The claimed 94 cm length should be treated cautiously because another listing field gives dimensions of 30 x 15 x 2 cm, while the grip is described inconsistently as both D-shaped and T-shaped. Reports of a bent head and weak screw joint matter when pressure rises. The seller claims a stainless handle, but that does not establish that every cutting component is stainless or immune to damage. It is our best-value option for light occasional work, not a budget route through compacted clay or roots.

Pros

  • Low price at £12.99
  • Light at 890 g
  • Enough for a soft edge in some reviews

Cons

  • Bent head
  • Weak joint
  • Length and grip fields disagree

Best for: Light, occasional edging on soft ground when the lowest shelf price matters.

Less suitable: Compacted soil, roots or buyers who need unambiguous dimensions and a rigid one-piece shaft.

Common questions

Is the working length 30 cm or 94 cm?

The title and a bullet say 94 cm. A separate item-dimensions field says 30 x 15 x 2 cm. Use 94 cm as the claimed length and treat 30 cm as a conflicting field.

Will it cut compacted soil?

The listing asks the question and does not answer it in the saved text.

Is the handle stainless?

The bullets claim a rust-proof stainless handle. That is a listing claim. The grip is described as both a D-handle and a T-grip in different fields.

Colwelt 38-inch half-moon lawn edger

Rank 7

Colwelt 38-inch half-moon lawn edger

∼£22

Our view

The Colwelt C022 is a conventional half-moon edger with a claimed 38-inch, roughly 97 cm, working length and a cushioned T-grip. Its 1.54 kg package weight places it between the light Spear & Jackson and the heavier 2 kg step edgers. At £21.99 and 4.0 from 79 amazon.co.uk ratings, it does not stand out on either price or review score in this set. Reviewers describe a simple defined edge when the ground cooperates, but others report a blunt or bent head and a cheap feel. The shaft arrives in sections and needs the included wrenches, unlike a one-piece traditional iron. It can suit occasional work in moist, maintained turf, though the combination of assembly and mixed durability feedback makes it harder to recommend for demanding ground.

Pros

  • Simple half-moon for a defined edge
  • Lighter package than the 102 cm Colwelt
  • Soft T-grip

Cons

  • Blunt or bent in some reviews
  • Feels cheap to some buyers
  • Dry turf still resists it

Best for: Occasional half-moon edging in moist, maintained turf with a cushioned T-grip.

Less suitable: Dry turf, heavy levering or buyers who want a one-piece iron.

Jardineer double-V serrated lawn edger

Rank 8

Jardineer double-V serrated lawn edger

∼£24

Our view

The Jardineer combines a double-V serrated head, broad non-slip pedal and bolted shaft in a package listed at 2.05 kg. Some reviewers find the V edge useful around roots and say assembly with the supplied wrenches takes only a few minutes. The saved amazon.co.uk line is 3.9 from 32 ratings, however, which is both a lower score and a smaller sample than the leading edgers here. A bent head and difficulty in hard, dry ground appear in the review evidence. The listing also gives a 43 cm carton dimension rather than a trustworthy working length, so you cannot use that number to judge posture. Consider it only if the wide pedal and V profile fit your needs and the return terms are acceptable; stronger evidence supports other choices.

Pros

  • Wide footplate
  • V edge on roots for some users
  • Assembly described as quick

Cons

  • Bend reported
  • Hard in dry ground
  • Only 32 ratings

Best for: Occasional edging when a broad pedal and double-V head are the priority.

Less suitable: Hard dry ground, buyers needing a confirmed tool length or those wanting extensive review evidence.

YHZMZHY 110 cm saw-tooth lawn edger

Rank 9

YHZMZHY 110 cm saw-tooth lawn edger

∼£15

Our view

The YHZMZHY offers a long 110 cm shaft and serrated half-moon at a low £14.99, but its saved review record is the weakest in this set. The amazon.co.uk line is 3.1 from 24 ratings, and UK reviewers report a failed weld, a blade bending within minutes and missing bolts. When the head stays straight, the teeth can tidy a soft border, and the 1 kg listed weight is manageable. Those positives do not offset the risk attached to the bolted tubes and head connection. The listing calls the steel rustproof, but that claim says nothing about weld strength. Skip it for hard ground or regular work; the small saving over better-supported options is poor value when a first-session failure is plausible.

Pros

  • 110 cm handle
  • Teeth tidy a soft border when the head stays straight
  • Spare foam grips when supplied

Cons

  • Weld failed
  • Blade bent in minutes
  • Missing bolts
  • Weak in dry soil

Best for: Very light, occasional work only when you can inspect every fixing and return the tool easily.

Less suitable: Dry or rooty ground, frequent use or anyone prioritising dependable welds and complete fixings.

Common questions

Why is the star rating lower than the other edgers here?

The saved amazon.co.uk line is 3.1 from 24 ratings. UK reviews in the file describe a failed weld, a blade that bent within minutes, and missing bolts.

How long is the handle?

The item-dimensions field says 110 cm long and 22 cm wide, at 1 kg.

Does it arrive ready to use?

Reviews describe several tubes and nuts and bolts. At least one buyer says the fixings were missing.

How we compared

The scores compare the nine manual lawn edgers retained from amazon.co.uk. Products Compared did not conduct a laboratory turf trial. Stars, rating counts, prices, dimensions and materials come from the saved UK listings. Practical strengths and failures come from the review evidence. The published method is one 0–100 score combining the amazon.co.uk star rating and rating volume with the available evidence on blade usefulness, shaft construction, assembly, weight and value. That file does not publish separate criterion percentages, so the weight below is 100. Repeated reports of a bent head, a failed weld, missing fixings or unclear specifications reduce confidence. A high marketplace rank, the word professional, or a serrated shape is not treated as proof of performance.

Lawn edger buying guide

Buy a lawn edger when you need a vertical soil face, not a trim of overhanging grass. A half-moon iron is often one piece. A step edger is often wider, toothed and bolted together. Check the blade, the tread, the working length and the joint before the shelf price. Stars count only beside the rating count, and they are not a turf trial.

What is a lawn edger?

A lawn edger cuts a vertical soil face where turf meets a border, a path or a drive. In a UK garden that is usually a half-moon iron or a step edger. You place a boot on the tread and push the blade in. Shears are a different tool: they trim grass that overhangs an edge you have already cut. A strimmer only knocks back soft growth. Buried strip, metal or plastic, stays in the ground and is not a hand tool. Powered stick edgers are not among the listings kept for this comparison.

Best for

  • Householders who recut borders a few times a year
  • People restoring a rooty or neglected verge
  • Users who need a shaft length that lets them stand rather than stoop

Not ideal for

  • Shears or a strimmer bought to cut a soil face
  • Frozen, very wet or baked ground
  • A disputed boundary, paving, concrete or unseen services

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying shears or a strimmer for a soil face

An edger cuts the vertical soil step. Shears only trim overhang once that step exists. A strimmer knocks back soft growth. Buried strip is a different product again.

  2. 2

Reading the carton as the length

A parcel near 40 cm is the box. Claimed working lengths in this category are about 92 to 110 cm. Using the carton figure will not tell you whether the shaft suits your height.

  3. 3

Cutting baked or frozen ground, or levering the shaft

Avoid frozen, very wet or very dry soil. Stand on the tread. Do not jump, and do not use the shaft as a lever. A thin blade bends, and missing bolts on a three-piece shaft are a real failure, not a detail.

What to weigh up

Blade, tread and the joint

High

A smooth or pointed half-moon suits a maintained edge you recut a few times a year. Teeth or a serrated V are for roots, stones or a neglected verge. Blunt teeth still tear, and a serrated shape is not proof that the steel will stay straight. You need a tread you can stand on. Narrow shoulders and a wide footplate are different places to put a boot. The shaft is the next check. A one-piece iron avoids bolts that can be missing or work loose.

Length, weight and review evidence

High

Claimed working lengths in this category are about 92 to 110 cm. Match that to your height. A figure near 40 cm is almost always the carton. Do not treat it as the shaft. Saved weights run from about 0.8 kg to about 2.2 kg. A heavier head can feel planted, and it can also make repeated cuts tiring. Heavier is not automatically sturdier. Read the star line only with the rating count beside it.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A maintained border

You recut a lawn edge a few times a year and you want a light one-piece iron. The Spear & Jackson Select Carbon is about £16.49, listed at 800 g and 92 cm, with 4.4 from 915 ratings. Bend and snap reports remain, so do not lever it through baked soil.

A rooty or neglected verge

Teeth matter more than the lowest price, and you still want a shaft with no bolts to lose. The Roughneck sharp-edge iron is about £21.38, with a serrated head and a one-piece fibreglass shaft, at 4.5 from 449 ratings. A minority report bending or breakage.

Light work at the lowest price

The edge is already soft and you only recut it occasionally. The YL half-moon is about £12.99 and 890 g, with 4.2 from 80 ratings. Length and grip fields conflict, and weak-joint reports mean it is the best value only for that light job.

Common questions about lawn edgers

Which lawn edger is the top pick for 2026?
The top pick is the Spear & Jackson Select Carbon. It scores 91, with 4.4 from 915 amazon.co.uk ratings, a stated weight of 800 g and a one-piece tubular shaft. The treaded half-moon suits a maintained edge. Reports of snapping, bending and lost sharpness stay in the assessment. The score compares saved listings and reviews. It is not a turf trial, and it does not mean the best lawn edger in Britain.
How much does a lawn edger cost on amazon.co.uk?
Saved shelf prices for these nine manual edgers run from about £12.99 to about £29.99. The YL half-moon is the lowest, at about £12.99, and it is the best value only for light occasional work. Mid listings sit around £21 to £30 and include heavier step edgers plus a one-piece fibreglass-shaft iron. Hand tools above £30, including an RHS-endorsed stainless half-moon at £32.49 on the maker’s site, are outside this set.
What should you check before you buy a lawn edger?
Check the job first. An edger cuts a vertical soil face. Shears trim overhang, and a strimmer only knocks back soft growth. Then check the blade: a smooth half-moon for a maintained edge, teeth or a serrated V for roots. You need a tread you can stand on, and a working length of about 92 to 110 cm rather than the carton. A one-piece shaft avoids missing bolts. Read the star line only with the rating count beside it.
Is a half-moon or a saw-tooth blade better?
A smooth or pointed half-moon suits a maintained edge that you recut a few times a year. Teeth or a serrated V suit roots, stones or a neglected verge. Blunt teeth still tear, and they do not replace moisture in baked soil. The choice is the turf in front of you, not a brand ranking and not a pair of shears. A serrated shape on the listing is not proof that the head will stay straight.
Can a lawn edger cut hard or dry ground?
Do not start a new bed on very dry soil, and avoid frozen or very wet ground. Review patterns in this set describe bent heads, weak joints and blades that will not cut cleanly in baked clay. Heavier is not automatically sturdier. If the soil resists a boot, wait until it is workable, and do not lever the shaft. If pain starts under the tread, or the cut meets paving, concrete or unseen services, stop and call a professional.
Does a manual lawn edger need a UK plug or a noise label?
No. Every listing kept here is manual. There is no voltage and no battery, so there is no BS 1363 plug to check. The Noise Emission in the Environment by Equipment for Use Outdoors Regulations 2001 exclude non-powered attachments placed on the market separately, so a half-moon needs no sound-power label. Check a powered machine against the schedules before you claim one. Wear closed shoes, do not jump on the tread, and keep your hands off the crescent.
When are shears or buried edging the wrong substitute?
Shears trim grass that overhangs an edge you have already cut. They do not cut the soil face. A strimmer only knocks back soft growth. Buried metal or plastic strip is a different product: it stays in the ground, and it is not a hand tool you stand on. If you want that border rather than a recut soil step, compare lawn edging. Call a professional when the boundary itself is disputed.
What if the blade bends on the first cut?
The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, says satisfactory quality includes durability and fitness for usual purposes, given the description and the price. A blade that bends on a normal first cut is a seller issue if the listing promised a durable edge. A low price does not make that failure acceptable. GPSR 2005 is the GB baseline. From 13 December 2024, Regulation (EU) 2023/988 applies in Northern Ireland. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 bind employers, not a householder.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Spear & Jackson Select Carbon, score 91, about £16.49. It has the largest rating sample, 4.4 from 915 ratings, weighs 800 g and uses a one-piece tubular shaft. Reports of snapping, bending and lost sharpness remain. The best value is the YL 94 cm half-moon, score 78, about £12.99, with 4.2 from 80 ratings. Conflicting length and grip fields, plus weak-joint reports, mean that badge applies only to light occasional work. The Roughneck scores 90, above the YL, and does not take the value badge. Neither badge means the best lawn edger in Britain. The scores compare saved listings and reviews, not a turf trial.
