Boundary wire is the low-voltage loop a wired robotic lawnmower uses to know the edge of the lawn. On many models the same cable is also the guide back to the charging station. In the UK you buy it when you are installing that kind of mower, or when the station reports an open loop, not when the mower navigates without a wire. You tell a suitable reel by the metal inside the jacket, by a waterproof joint at every cut, and by a length that covers the perimeter, the islands and the guide without exceeding the maximum in the manual. A thicker sheath does not mean a copper core, and a universal reel still has to match the station pins. Pegs, pet-fence cable and garden catenary rope are different products. Measure the perimeter, then add an out-and-back for every island, the guide and spare. One seller’s rule of thumb is to add 25–50% to the bare perimeter. Do not coil the offcut. Sizing the loop is in our [boundary wire buying guide](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/boundary-wire/sub/boundary-wire-buying-guide).

The best boundary wires in detail

Gardena 150 m boundary wire

Rank 1

Gardena 150 m boundary wire

∼£83

Our view

The Gardena 4088-60 is a 150 m wire-only spool at about £82.99 on amazon.co.uk, listed at 4.7 from 627 reviews, the highest star line in this set. That sample and the original 150 m length are why the stored score is 85 and why this row is the top pick here. The listing treats the same cable as the boundary and as the guide back to the station, and it says to join pieces with an original Gardena coupler. Review tone in the file is that the reel is expensive and that it restored a Flymo EasiLife after a break-in-loop lamp. The conductor is not named: the material cell says plastic, which describes the jacket, not the core. Pegs are not in the box. Weight is 1.45 kg, close to Gardena UK’s own figure of about 1,400 g for the same reference, and the listing prints a 2-year manufacturer warranty.

Pros

  • 150 m spool the listing also sells as the guide wire
  • 4.7 from 627 amazon.co.uk reviews, the highest star line here
  • Original Gardena coupler named as the join
  • 2-year manufacturer warranty printed on the listing

Cons

  • Conductor metal is not stated
  • No pegs or connectors in the box
  • £82.99 for wire only, and the review sample calls it expensive

Best for: You already run a Gardena or Flymo loop and want the 150 m original spool, joined with the brand coupler.

Less suitable: You need pegs in the same order, or a listing that states tinned copper.

Common questions

Does the Gardena 150 m reel include pegs?

No. The included-components line is one 150 m boundary wire. Pegs are not in the box.

Can this reel also be the guide wire?

Yes. The title and the bullets call it an outdoor guide wire as well as the boundary wire, and they say to join pieces with an original Gardena coupler.

Is the conductor copper?

The listing does not name the metal. The material cell says plastic, which describes a jacket, not the core.

WORX 50 m Landroid boundary wire

Rank 2

WORX 50 m Landroid boundary wire

∼£25

Our view

The WORX WA0184 is a 50 m wire-only box at about £25.30 for Landroid, listed at 4.6 from 1,930 reviews, the largest count in this comparison. The stored score is 76, level with the JAVEX row, because UK reviews include easy cuts and repeat breaks. Those reviews describe a full replacement after an E1 wire-missing error where no break could be seen, a report that it worked on a Husqvarna, and complaints that animals broke the wire and that it is not like the wire supplied with the mower. Pulling a lot of wire from the box tangles it, according to the same file. The bullet recommends above-ground laying so you can change the route, and it points you to WORX pegs, which are not in the box. The material cell says plastic and metal and then guesses copper or aluminium, so the conductor stays unknown. At 400 g and 50 m it does not cover a perimeter that still needs islands and a guide.

Pros

  • 1,930 reviews, the largest sample in this set
  • Brand spool for WORX Landroid at £25.30
  • Above-ground laying is what the listing describes

Cons

  • UK reviews include easy cuts, animal damage and a repeat break
  • Only 50 m, and no pegs in the box
  • Conductor metal is not stated

Best for: A short Landroid repair or a small extension where 50 m covers the gap.

Less suitable: A full perimeter with islands, or a lawn where the last wire was cut by pets or a scarifier.

Common questions

Does the WORX WA0184 include pegs?

No. The box line is 50 m of wire. The bullet says to use WORX pegs, sold separately, if you lay it above ground.

What metal is inside the WORX wire?

Not stated. The material cell says plastic and metal and then guesses copper or aluminium. That guess is not a spec.

Is above-ground laying what WORX describes?

Yes. The bullet recommends above-ground installation so you can change the route later.

COZCLAM 175 m boundary wire kit

Rank 3

COZCLAM 175 m boundary wire kit

∼£34

Our view

The COZCLAM kit is about £33.52 for 175 m of wire, 100 pegs, 20 cable connectors and 10 terminal connectors, which is the fullest box in this set for the money. The bullet states 24 strands of tinned copper-plated aluminium and does not give an outer diameter in millimetres. The details block prints 4.6 from 411 reviews next to ASIN B0DZFW51M4, while the page URL is B0DK6K6GK1, so that star line is the listing’s figure rather than a second independent sample. UK review text says the cable worked on a Gardena Sileno, a Flymo and a Yardforce, that it was thicker than the original and harder to strip, and that the connectors were not up to the original mower’s connectors. Weight is 1.94 kg and the colour is green. The package-size cell of 10 x 10 x 10 mm cannot describe that reel. It is a weak match if the last loop failed because the core corroded and you now want a reel that states tinned copper.

Pros

  • 175 m plus 100 pegs and connectors in one box
  • Conductor named as 24-strand tinned copper-plated aluminium
  • UK reviews cite use on a Sileno, a Flymo and a Yardforce
  • £33.52 against the £80-class wire-only reels

Cons

  • The 4.6 from 411 reviews sits beside a different ASIN in the details block
  • Reviewers say the connectors were not up to the original mower’s
  • Harder to strip than the original in those reviews
  • No millimetre diameter on the listing

Best for: A first wired install where you want pegs and more than 50 m, and clad aluminium is acceptable.

Less suitable: A station that needs the brand coupler, or a loop you are replacing because the old core rusted.

Common questions

Are pegs included with the COZCLAM 175 m kit?

Yes. The kit bullet lists 100 pegs, 20 cable connectors and 10 terminal connectors with the 175 m wire.

What is the wire made of?

The bullet says 24 strands of tinned, copper-plated aluminium. It does not give an outer diameter in millimetres.

ECENCE 50 m boundary wire

Rank 4

ECENCE 50 m boundary wire

∼£15

Our view

The ECENCE spool is the lowest price in the set, about £14.99 for 50 m, at 4.4 from 230 reviews, and the stored score is 70. The same bullet prints 0.13 inch and 17 AWG, and the listing does not say which figure is the jacket and which is the conductor. UK reviews say the insulation was thicker than the original and that a shortfall of about 6–8 m on a guide was made up with this cable. One UK review says it did not fit the machine, despite a compatibility list that names Husqvarna, Gardena, Bosch, Honda and WORX. Pegs are not included. Weight is 570 g, the colour is green, and the style name 164 ft matches 50 m. Catalogue cells for cutting height in the saved listing are mower-template noise, not a feature of the cable.

Pros

  • £14.99, the lowest price here for 50 m
  • Used in a review to make up a short guide of about 6–8 m
  • Insulation described as thicker than the original

Cons

  • 0.13 inch and 17 AWG are printed together and not reconciled
  • One UK review says it did not fit the machine
  • No pegs, and the metal is not named

Best for: You need a short extra length for a guide and you can check the station pins before you trust the compatibility list.

Less suitable: A full lawn, or a buyer who needs a stated millimetre diameter and a named conductor.

Common questions

How long is the ECENCE wire?

50 m. The style name 164 ft matches that length.

What does 0.13 inch and 17 AWG mean here?

Both figures are in the same bullet. The listing does not say which is the jacket and which is the conductor, so they are left as printed.

No. Included components are the 50 m cable.

JAVEX 153 m tinned copper wire

Rank 5

JAVEX 153 m tinned copper wire

∼£80

Our view

The JAVEX BH-T34-153 is the only reel in this set that states tinned copper, at about £79.99 for 153 m, with a 3.4 mm outer diameter and 24 strands written as 24 x 0.25 mm. The listing line is 4.3 from 37 reviews, so the stored score is 76 beside a much thinner sample than the Gardena or WORX rows. UK and US review text talks about a previous loop that rusted and lost signal, and about thicker insulation than a wire that failed. The title says installation kit, but pegs and connectors are not listed in the box. Weight is 2.98 kg, the colour is green, and the country of origin is Taiwan. Universal is the listing’s word, including a misspelt Husqvarna, and the price still sits close to Gardena’s 150 m original. Thirty-seven reviews do not show how long that copper core lasts on a UK lawn.

Pros

  • Only listing here that states tinned copper
  • 3.4 mm and 24 x 0.25 mm both printed
  • Reviewers who replaced a rusted loop describe thicker insulation

Cons

  • 37 reviews is a thin sample next to the Gardena and WORX rows
  • No pegs in the box, despite the kit wording in the title
  • £79.99, close to the original Gardena spool, for wire only

Best for: You have already lost a thin loop to corrosion and want a stated copper reel of about 150 m.

Less suitable: A first install that needs pegs in the box, or a short splice where 50 m is enough.

Common questions

Does the JAVEX reel include pegs?

Pegs and connectors are not listed. The title says installation kit; the specification block is the cable.

How thick is the JAVEX wire?

The title and the wire-diameter cell both say 3.4 mm, with 24 strands and 24 x 0.25 mm in the title.

Is the core copper?

The title says tinned copper and the material cell says copper. That is the listing’s claim, not a lab result.

FOTEEMO 150 m boundary wire kit

Rank 6

FOTEEMO 150 m boundary wire kit

∼£28

Our view

The FOTEEMO kit at about £27.98 states 150 m in both the title and the bullet, with 50 pegs, 10 cable connectors and 20 terminal sets. The conductor is 24 strands of tinned copper-clad aluminium, 2.7 mm outer and 1.17 mm inner. The listing line is 4.3 from 12 reviews, and the written reviews overlap the other FOTEEMO file, so this is not a separate 12-person trial. In that thin sample the praise is that it was cheaper than named brands and that it worked with original Yard Force wire. Weight is 1.56 kg. Twelve reviews are too few to rank how long the clad core lasts. The same image file is used on the FOTEEMO listing whose title and bullet disagree on length, which is why the stored score stays at 69.

Pros

  • Title and bullet both say 150 m
  • 50 pegs and connectors in the box
  • 2.7 mm outer and 1.17 mm inner printed, clad aluminium named

Cons

  • Only 12 reviews, with wording shared with the other FOTEEMO ASIN
  • Conductor is copper-clad aluminium, not stated copper
  • Too thin a sample to judge how long the core lasts

Best for: You want a 150 m kit with pegs at about £27.98 and you accept a very small review file.

Less suitable: You need a well-reviewed spool, or you cannot tell this reel apart from the FOTEEMO listing whose length conflicts.

Common questions

Do the title and the bullet agree on length?

Yes on this ASIN. Both say 150 m. The other FOTEEMO listing in this set does not.

What is the diameter?

2.7 mm outer, inner diameter 1.17 mm, 24 strands of tinned copper-clad aluminium.

FOTEEMO boundary wire kit, length unclear

Rank 7

FOTEEMO boundary wire kit, length unclear

∼£35

Our view

This FOTEEMO kit is about £34.98, and the length is not settled: the title says 200 m / 656 ft while the kit bullet says 100 metres, with the same 50 pegs, 10 cable connectors and 20 terminal sets on both lines. The conductor matches the 150 m sibling: 24 strands of tinned copper-clad aluminium, 2.7 mm outer and 1.17 mm inner. Stars are also 4.3 from 12, and the image is the same file, so the reviews are not a second trial. The listing was first shown on 29 September 2025, and the package weight is 1.94 kg. The stored score is 60 because you cannot plan a lawn on that metre count. Ordering it as 200 m when the bullet says 100 m is a not-as-described risk under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a longer reel you have verified.

Pros

  • Pegs and connectors appear in both the title and the bullet
  • Conductor and 2.7 mm diameter are stated
  • Same clad-aluminium description as the 150 m kit

Cons

  • Title says 200 m and the bullet says 100 m
  • Same 12-review line and image as the other FOTEEMO ASIN
  • The comparison length stays unknown until the reel in your hand is measured

Best for: Only after you have the reel in hand and the measured length matches the route you sketched.

Less suitable: Any install where the metre count has to be right before the courier arrives.

How we compared

Seven amazon.co.uk listings are scored from the snapshot stored on 22 October 2026. Nobody laid these loops or measured a core in a lab. The stored 0–100 score is the star rating times 14, plus a review-count term capped at 15, plus points for a named conductor and for pegs in the box, minus length conflicts, overlapping review files and repeated break complaints. The conductor points, the peg points and those cuts have no published number in the method file, so they are not given a weight. The numbered figures copied below are 14 and 15. They sum to 29. They are not rescaled into shares of 100. A score on one row is not a weight. The top pick is the highest stored score. The best value is the 175 m kit with pegs. The row with 1,930 reviews does not take that label.

Boundary wire buying guide

Confirm a physical loop, then length, then the metal inside the jacket, then the pins. A kit with pegs is a different offer from a wire-only spool. The notes below follow that order from the digest. They are not a lab test of the core.

What is boundary wire?

Boundary wire is the low-voltage loop that tells a wired robotic lawnmower where the lawn ends. On many models the same cable is also the guide back to the charging station. It is not mains cable, not pet-fence wire, and not a rope across a path. You buy it for a first install of a wired mower, or when the station reports an open loop. A mower that finds the lawn without a wire does not use this product. Start by confirming the mower uses a physical loop.

Best for

  • A first wired install where you want pegs in the box and one guide
  • An owner replacing an open loop after the pins and a short test loop

Not ideal for

  • A mower that navigates without a wire
  • Pet-fence cable, pegs on their own, or a coiled spare

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying the wrong cable

Pegs, pet-fence wire and garden catenary rope are different products. A reel sold as universal still has to match the pins on the station. Wire-free mowers do not take this loop.

  2. 2

    Trusting a conflicting length

If the title says one metre count and the bullet says another, do not plan the lawn on the longer figure. Do not coil the spare, and do not cross island wires. Run them out and back in parallel.

  3. 3

    Assuming original means copper

A thicker sheath is not a copper core. Husqvarna UK’s standard 2.7 mm reel is aluminium plus copper. The heavy-duty reel is tinned copper. Scarifying over surface wire can cut the loop.

What to weigh up

Length and the manual maximum

High

Length comes after you confirm the mower uses a wire. Add the perimeter, an out-and-back for every island, the guide, and spare for joins. One UK seller’s rule of thumb is to add 25–50% to the bare perimeter. That is not a British Standard. Then stop at the maximum printed in the manual. Public examples are 250 m on one Gardena model and 300 m on one Yard Force guide. They are not a cap for every robot. Do not coil the offcut. Do not cross island wires. Run each island out and back in parallel.

Conductor, joint and pins

High

Name the conductor before you compare prices. Tinned copper is the lower-resistance choice on a long loop or on a loop that has already failed. Copper-clad aluminium is the cheaper repair. A thicker jacket does not prove a copper core, and the word original is not the word copper. Husqvarna UK’s standard 2.7 mm reel is aluminium plus copper. Its heavy-duty reel is tinned copper, at 5.3 mm. A jacket around 2.7 mm is common, and the metal inside can still differ.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

The station lamp says the loop is open

You already run a wired mower and you must decide between a connector and a new reel. Check the pins and a short test loop first. If the fault is the cable, the Gardena 150 m spool is the top pick here for a brand loop joined with the original coupler. Pegs are not in that box, and the conductor is not named.

A first install that needs pegs

You want pegs in the box and a length that can cover one guide on a small or medium lawn. The COZCLAM 175 m kit is the best value here: 100 pegs and connectors at about £33.52. The conductor is tinned copper-plated aluminium, and the station pins still have to match.

A thin loop that has already failed

You have replaced a thin loop and now want a reel that states tinned copper, accepting a higher price and buying pegs separately. The JAVEX listing states tinned copper at 3.4 mm and 153 m. It has 37 reviews, and the title says kit while pegs are not listed.

Common questions about boundary wires

What is boundary wire?
Boundary wire is the low-voltage loop a wired robotic lawnmower uses to know the edge of the lawn. On many models the same cable is also the guide back to the charging station. You buy it for a mower that uses a physical loop, or when the station reports an open loop. A mower that navigates without a wire does not take this cable. Pegs, pet-fence cable and garden catenary rope are different products.
How much does boundary wire cost?
On the amazon.co.uk snapshot for this set, 50 m spools sit at about £14.99 and about £25.30. Stated 150 m and 175 m clad-aluminium kits sit at about £27.98 and about £33.52. A 150 m original spool is about £82.99, and a 153 m reel stated as tinned copper is about £79.99. One title says 200 m while its bullet says 100 m, at about £34.98, so that length is not settled.
What should you check before you buy boundary wire?
Confirm the mower uses a physical loop, then read that model’s maximum loop length and the pin labels. Measure the perimeter, an out-and-back for every island, the guide and spare. Name the conductor. Tinned copper is the lower-resistance choice on a long or already-failed loop. Copper-clad aluminium is the cheaper repair. A kit with pegs is a different offer from a wire-only spool. Prefer a listing whose title and bullets agree on metres.
Is original boundary wire pure copper?
Original is not a synonym for copper. Husqvarna UK’s standard 2.7 mm reel is aluminium plus copper, and its heavy-duty reel is tinned copper. A thicker jacket does not by itself prove the core. Use the coupler the maker specifies. A universal brand list is not a substitute for the pin labels on your station. If the last loop failed because the core corroded, look for a listing that states tinned copper.
How do you lay boundary wire?
The loop is the station’s signal, not mains. Peg the wire if you still want to move it. If you bury it, Flymo, Gardena and Husqvarna pages give 1–20 cm, which matters if you scarify. Distances from a wall, pond or path, and peg spacing, stay in the manual. Do not cross island wires. Run them out and back in parallel. Do not coil spare cable. Do not shorten the low-voltage lead if the manual forbids it.
What if the station says the wire is missing?
Start with the pins and a short test loop at the station, not with another reel. Husqvarna’s repair note says to check the connections and then split the loop. If a new short test loop at the station still fails, the fault is the station or the supply, not a longer cable. A reel whose title and bullet disagree on metres is a poor next order. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies if the reel is not as described.
When should you call a professional?
Call someone when the wire runs under paving you cannot lift, when the lawn meets open water or a public edge and the barrier is unclear, when a short test loop at the station still fails, or when two neighbouring loops seem to interfere. Scarifying over surface wire, coiling the spare, and laying the guide across an island are mistakes to avoid before that call. Maximum loop length stays in the manual.
Does every robot mower need boundary wire?
No. Wire-free systems do not take this cable. You buy boundary wire when the mower uses a physical loop, including the guide back to the station on many of those models. If the manual has no loop, a reel will not create an edge. How those mowers differ is in our robot lawnmower without boundary wire comparison.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Gardena 4088-60, a 150 m wire-only spool at about £82.99, with 4.7 from 627 reviews. That is the highest stored score in this set, 85. The listing treats the same cable as the boundary and as the guide, and it names an original Gardena coupler. The conductor is not stated, and pegs are not in the box. The best value is the COZCLAM 175 m kit at about £33.52, score 78, with 100 pegs, 20 cable connectors and 10 terminals. The bullet states 24 strands of tinned copper-plated aluminium. WORX has 1,930 reviews at about £25.30 and does not take the best-value label. That box is 50 m of wire only.
