Self-propelled lawn mower comparison 2026

The best self-propelled lawn mowers, compared.

Top pick: Greenworks GD24X2LM46SPK4X Best value: Withheld – Best value is withheld. No listing has 1,000 or more reviews, and no second listing has at least 50. The woRkologie row is cheaper and names the rear axle, but six reviews are below that bar. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

A self-propelled lawn mower is a walk-behind rotary whose wheels are driven, so you steer and set the pace instead of pushing the whole deck. In the United Kingdom you look at one when mowing already takes a long time, or when a slope makes pushing hard, and you still want to walk behind the machine. A hover mower is a different machine, and so is a robot that docks itself. You recognise a suitable one by the drive, the cutting width and the height scale. The motor has to turn at least one axle. If the listing only says wheel drive, the axle is still unnamed. Width has to fit the gates: a wider deck means fewer passes and a harder turn. Ordinary lawns are about 13–25 mm in summer and up to about 40 mm in spring and autumn, and you should not remove more than a third in one pass. On a slope, mow across the face and stop if it slides. That limit is set out in the [slope guide for a self-propelled lawn mower](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/self-propelled-lawn-mower/sub/self-propelled-lawn-mower-for-slopes).

A self-propelled lawn mower is a walk-behind rotary whose wheels are driven, so you steer and set the pace instead of pushing the whole deck.

Question 1 of 2

What is the lawn like?

The best self-propelled lawn mowers in detail

Greenworks GD24X2LM46SPK4X

Rank 1

Greenworks GD24X2LM46SPK4X

∼£496

Our view

This Greenworks listing is a bundle at about £495.98: the GD24X2LM46SPK4X 46 cm self-propelled mower, two 4 Ah batteries, a twin charger and a 46 cm replacement blade. The bullets say the 25 cm rear wheels drive the mower, that the bag is 55 L, and that you can mulch, side-discharge or collect. Heights in the bullets run from 25 mm to 80 mm across seven positions. A separate field says 80 centimetres, which does not match. The 480 m² line is a seller claim. The star line is 4.7 from 3 reviews and the listing has no review text, so there is no UK comment to quote. The 3-year and 2-year battery lines are warranty wording on the listing, not a checked claim.

Pros

  • 55 L bag, mulch, and side discharge are all named
  • Twin charger and a spare 46 cm blade are in the price
  • Rear wheels are named as the driven axle

Cons

  • Only 3 reviews and no review text
  • Height units conflict: bullets 25–80 mm, another field 80 cm
  • Highest price in this set, and no drive speed

Best for: A 46 cm rear-driven cordless mower with a 55 L bag, mulch and side discharge, if you confirm the height units before you pay.

Less suitable: A buyer who wants a large review sample, a stated drive speed, or a lower price.

Common questions

Is the about £495.98 price for the mower alone?

No. The title adds a 46 cm Greenworks replacement blade to the GD24X2LM46SPK4X kit, two 4 Ah batteries and a twin charger.

What cutting heights are printed?

The bullets say seven positions from 25 mm to 80 mm. A separate Amazon field says a maximum of 80 centimetres. Those two figures are not the same.

Was 480 m² measured for this comparison?

No. The bullets say lawns up to 480 m² without recharging. The listing has a 4.7 star line from 3 reviews and no review text.

Litheli 40V 43 cm

Rank 2

Litheli 40V 43 cm

∼£250

Our view

The Litheli listing is a 40 V brushless self-propelled rotary at about £249.99, 43 cm wide, with two 5.0 Ah batteries and a charger named in the title. amazon.co.uk shows 4.3 from 684 reviews, and 44 of the first 50 review blocks are tagged United Kingdom. UK reviewers call it light and easy to assemble. The item weight is 14.9 kg. The bullets give a stepless drive from 1.4 to 2.9 mph and six heights from 25 to 76 mm, and they do not name the driven axle or a grass-box volume. Repeated UK complaints are short run time and long charging. One reviewer reports a dead battery on arrival and another a pack that failed after three charges. Those are single reports. A 25 percent capacity line against 4.0 Ah packs is the seller's comparison, not a timed mow.

Pros

  • Largest review sample in this set: 4.3 from 684
  • Six heights from 25–76 mm, listed weight 14.9 kg
  • Two 5.0 Ah batteries and a charger are named in the title

Cons

  • Driven axle and grass-box volume are not stated
  • UK reviews complain of short runtime and long charging
  • Stepless speed is a bullet, not a confirmed dial

Best for: A flat or gently rising lawn where a 43 cm cordless deck and a large amazon.co.uk review sample matter more than a named axle.

Less suitable: A bank that needs the driven axle named, or a buyer who needs a stated grass-box volume.

Common questions

Is the wheel drive described on the listing?

Yes. The bullets say a stepless wheel drive from 1.4 to 2.9 mph for uneven ground and gentle slopes. They do not name the axle or a degree limit.

What batteries are in the box?

The title includes two 5.0 Ah batteries and a charger. A 25 percent capacity line versus 4.0 Ah packs is the seller's comparison, not a measured mowing time.

How large is the grass box?

The listing does not state a litre figure. UK reviews mention emptying a bag. The item-weight line is 14.9 kg.

Einhell GC-CM 36/46 S Li BL

Rank 3

Einhell GC-CM 36/46 S Li BL

∼£448

Our view

The Einhell GC-CM 36/46 S Li BL, model 3413380, is about £448.00 on this listing, with 3.8 from 22 amazon.co.uk reviews. Only three of the 16 review bodies are tagged United Kingdom. Included components are the mower, two 4.0 Ah batteries and a twin charger, which overrides an earlier bullet that says one 4 Ah pack. The deck is 46 cm with nine heights from 25 to 80 mm, a 50 L collector and a stated weight of 24.1 kg. Drive is variable speed. The axle and the speed are not numbered. One UK review says the drive pauses before it moves and that the metal body is too heavy to lift. Another, on about 310 m², says it stopped short of the seller's 500 m² line. The rank line files it under tow-behind mowers. The product text is a walk-behind.

Pros

  • Nine heights from 25–80 mm and a 50 L box are stated
  • Included-components line names two 4.0 Ah batteries and a twin charger
  • 46 cm steel deck, listed weight 24.1 kg

Cons

  • An earlier bullet says 1×4 Ah
  • Only three review bodies are tagged United Kingdom
  • Seller's 500 m² line is disputed by a UK review on about 310 m²; rank says tow-behind

Best for: A wider 46 cm cut with nine height steps, if you confirm the battery count in the carton and can lift 24.1 kg.

Less suitable: A buyer who needs the driven axle named, or who is treating the 500 m² line as a measured area.

Common questions

What does the included-components line say?

Cordless lawn mower, two 4.0 Ah batteries and one twin charger. An earlier bullet says 1x4Ah. The components line is the box claim on this listing.

Is the 500 m² line a test?

No. It is the seller's recommendation. One UK review with about 310 m² of lawn says the mower stopped with about 5 m² left.

Why does the rank say tow-behind?

The Best Sellers Rank line files it as 5 in Tow-Behind Lawn Mowers. The title and bullets describe a walk-behind Power X-Change mower with wheel drive.

woRkologie E20LM02-AK220

Rank 4

woRkologie E20LM02-AK220

∼£223

Our view

The woRkologie E20LM02-AK220 is about £222.99, a 43 cm cordless mower rated 3.7 from 6 amazon.co.uk reviews, with four UK review bodies on the listing. The bullets describe stepless rear-wheel drive from 2.2 to 4.7 km/h, two 20 V 5.0 Ah batteries, a 50 L bag, a mulch plug and three blades. The 500 m² line is a seller claim. UK reviewers say it does the job at this price, and they complain that the charger takes one battery at a time, that both packs must be fitted, and that drive use shortens the run. One reviewer says there is no rear roller, so the blade scalps if a rear wheel drops off the edge. The Amazon power-source field says Electric while the bullets describe batteries. Item weight is 16.2 kg.

Pros

  • Rear axle is named, listed at 2.2–4.7 km/h
  • 50 L bag, mulch plug, and three blades are stated
  • Lowest cordless price in this set at about £222.99

Cons

  • Only 6 reviews
  • UK reviews: both packs fitted, charger does one at a time
  • Stepless bullet versus tortoise and hare; a UK review says no rear roller

Best for: A rising lawn where you want the rear axle named, plus a 50 L bag and a mulch plug, and you can live with six reviews.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a rear roller, a large review sample, or a charger that fills both packs at once.

Common questions

Which wheels are driven?

The bullets say stepless rear-wheel drive from 2.2 to 4.7 km/h, also printed as 1.4 to 2.9 mph. A UK review describes tortoise and hare paces.

Do both batteries have to be fitted?

A UK review says the mower needs both batteries installed, and that the charger charges one at a time. The reviewer puts a full charge at about five hours.

Is 500 m² a test result?

No. It is a phrase in the bullets. This comparison did not measure a lawn. The star line is 3.7 from 6 reviews.

Mountfield SP41

Rank 5

Mountfield SP41

∼£159

Our view

The Mountfield SP41 on this listing is about £158.99, a 123 cc STIGA ST120 petrol mower with a 39 cm cut, five heights from 25 to 70 mm and a 40 L textile collector. The title says self-propelled. The bullets do not say which axle is driven or what the speed is, and they add a GT 110e cordless trimmer. The deck is described as polypropylene. There is no customer-reviews line and no review text, so this listing cannot support a quality claim from owners. Weight, fuel capacity, noise and warranty are not printed. A different Mountfield SP41 ASIN on amazon.co.uk is a separate listing and its stars are not this product.

Pros

  • Lowest shelf price in this set at about £158.99
  • 40 L collector and five heights from 25–70 mm are stated
  • Polypropylene deck is named, and a GT 110e trimmer is in the bullets

Cons

  • No star line and no review text
  • Driven axle, speed and weight are not stated
  • Fuel and E10 are not on the listing

Best for: A petrol buyer who wants the lowest shelf price and a stated 40 L box, and who will check the manual for the axle and the fuel.

Less suitable: Anyone choosing from owner reviews, a known weight, or a stated slope limit.

Common questions

Does the listing say the mower is self-propelled?

The title says self-propelled. The bullets describe the 123 cc engine, the polypropylene deck, the 39 cm cut and the 40 L collector. They do not name the driven axle or a speed.

What else is in the box?

The bullets include a GT 110e cordless grass trimmer with the SP41. Fuel is not listed.

Is there a star rating on this listing?

No. There is no customer-reviews line and no review text. The price on the listing is about £158.99.

How we compared

Scores on this page are the amazon.co.uk star rating times 20, taken from the listings of 19 October 2026. A 4.3 star line starts at 86. The score is 0 when the listing has no customer-review line. The top pick is the only kept listing with at least 100 reviews. Width, drive, the box and price stay in the table. This is not a laboratory test.

1

Amazon.co.uk review evidence

100%

The published score is the amazon.co.uk star rating multiplied by 20. A large review sample is the reason for the top pick: the only kept listing with at least 100 reviews. A high average from a handful of reviews does not outrank that sample. The score is not a noise test, a slope test or a measured lawn area. Best value is withheld: no listing has 1,000 or more reviews, and no second listing has at least 50.

Self-propelled lawn mower buying guide

Match the drive, the width and what is in the box. A driven walk-behind suits a long or tiring mow. A push mower, a hover mower and a robot are different shelves.

What is a self-propelled lawn mower?

A self-propelled lawn mower is a walk-behind rotary whose wheels are driven, so you steer instead of pushing the whole deck. You look at one in the United Kingdom when mowing already takes a long time, or when a slope makes pushing hard, and you still want to walk behind the machine. Push-only rotaries, hover mowers and robot mowers are different purchases. B&Q uses SP for self-propelled and HP for hand-propelled. The motor must turn at least one axle. Some listings name the driven rear wheels.

Best for

  • A large or tiring lawn, where you will still walk behind the mower
  • A slope you can walk, if the listing names a drive you can slow down

Not ideal for

  • A small flat patch you can push, which is a hand-propelled mower
  • A bank you would not walk with a running deck, or mowing done as paid work

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying a robot or a push mower from this search

A hover mower is not self-propelled, and a robot that docks itself is a different machine. A title has to show a driven axle, not only the word mower.

  2. 2

    Treating a square-metre bullet as a test

A lawn-area line is the seller's claim. Retailer width-to-area tables do not match each other. Treat both as a rule of thumb, not as a measured session on your grass.

  3. 3

Expecting stripes, or mowing up a bank

Drive does not stripe. Stripes need a rear roller. On a walk-behind mower, mow across the face of a slope and stop if it slides. Do not start on the lowest blade.

What to weigh up

Drive and slope

High

The drive is the reason you are on this shelf. The motor has to turn at least one axle. A title that says self-propelled, and bullets that never name the axle or a speed, has not finished the description. Rear-wheel drive is a named layout. A stepless or variable speed is a bullet until the listing shows a control you can identify. Hover mowers are not self-propelled, and a robot that returns to a dock is a different machine.

Power, height and weight

High

Petrol and a battery kit are different purchases, even when both titles say self-propelled. Petrol needs lawful fuel storage: in Great Britain, up to 30 litres at home and not in living accommodation. A battery kit must say whether the packs and the charger are included, and whether the charger fills one pack or both. A seller's square-metre line is not a measured session. Height should start high enough for spring.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A long mow and a deep sample

You still walk behind the mower, the lawn is flat or only gently rising, and you want the largest amazon.co.uk review sample. The Litheli 40V 43 cm is about £249.99, 43 cm, with two 5.0 Ah batteries and a charger named in the title, 4.3 from 684 reviews. The bullets give 1.4–2.9 mph and do not name the axle or a grass-box volume. UK reviews mention short runtime and long charging.

Our recommendation

View offer

A named rear axle

You want the driven axle in the bullets, a collector you can read, and a lower cordless price. The woRkologie E20LM02-AK220 is about £222.99, with rear-wheel drive at 2.2–4.7 km/h, a 50 L bag and a mulch plug, at 3.7 from 6 reviews. UK reviews say both packs must be fitted and the charger does one at a time. One review says there is no rear roller.

Petrol and a stated box

You want petrol and a collector the listing actually states. The Mountfield SP41 is about £158.99, 123 cc, 39 cm, five heights and a 40 L textile collector, with a trimmer named in the bullets. There is no star line, and the axle, speed and weight are not stated. Check the manual for the drive and the fuel. If the bank slides under you, do not buy a domestic listing as a method for that slope.

Common questions about self-propelled lawn mowers

What is a self-propelled lawn mower?
A self-propelled lawn mower is a walk-behind rotary whose wheels are driven, so you steer rather than push the whole deck. B&Q marks that layout SP, and a hand-propelled mower HP. The motor must turn at least one axle. A hover mower is not self-propelled, and the Royal Horticultural Society says self-propelled hover versions are not available. A robot that docks itself is a different machine. If the listing does not name the axle, treat the axle as unknown.
How do you choose cutting width and height?
Choose a width that fits the gates. A wider deck means fewer passes and a harder turn. Retailer tables that convert width into lawn area do not match each other, so treat them as a rule of thumb. The Royal Horticultural Society puts ordinary lawns at about 13–25 mm in summer and up to about 40 mm in spring and autumn. Never remove more than one third in one pass. A square-metre bullet is a seller claim, not a measured test.
Should you mow up and down a slope?
No. With a walk-behind mower you mow across the face of a slope, not up and down. Ride-on advice points the other way. Stop if the deck slides or the bank is too steep to walk with a running machine. None of these listings prints a maximum gradient, so do not invent a degree limit from the words self-propelled. A domestic listing is not a method for paid work on a bank you would not walk.
What are the UK rules for storing petrol at home?
In Great Britain, the Health and Safety Executive says you may store up to 30 litres of petrol at home without telling the Petroleum Enforcement Authority, and not in living accommodation. Do not assume that litre figure in Northern Ireland. Fuel is not printed on every petrol listing, so read the manual before you fill the tank. A battery kit is a different purchase: the listing should say whether the packs and the charger are included. A battery-only shelf is the self-propelled cordless lawn mower comparison.
Does a self-propelled mower stripe the lawn?
No. Drive does not stripe by itself. Stripes need a rear roller, which is a separate part. The Royal Horticultural Society treats the roller as that separate requirement. A listing can name rear-wheel drive and still have no roller. One UK review of a rear-wheel cordless mower says there is no rear roller, and that the blade scalps if a rear wheel drops off the edge. Do not read self-propelled as a striped finish.
Is there a UK Sunday mowing ban, and how loud can a mower be?
No source used for this page states a UK-wide Sunday ban. Neighbour complaints use the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Night-noise warning notices are a separate council power from 11 pm to 7 am. Lawnmowers fall under the outdoor equipment noise regulations. Up to 50 cm cutting width, the permissible guaranteed sound power is 96 dB. That is a label ceiling. These listings do not print it, so this page does not rank noise and does not claim that any machine measures 96 dB.
When should you leave this shelf?
Leave this shelf if you wanted a robot, a hover mower or a push-only rotary. Leave it if you are ranking a handful of reviews above several hundred, or treating a square-metre bullet as a test. Call someone else when the slope slides or is too steep to walk, when the safety bar does not release, when a guard is missing, when petrol leaks, or when a battery or charger is hot, swollen or smoking.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Litheli 40V 43 cm at about £249.99. The stored score is 86, from 4.3 and 684 amazon.co.uk reviews, and it is the only listing in this set with at least 100 reviews. The bullets give a stepless drive from 1.4 to 2.9 mph and six heights from 25 to 76 mm. They do not name the driven axle or a grass-box volume, and UK reviews complain of short runtime and long charging. Best value is withheld. No listing has 1,000 or more reviews, and no second listing has at least 50. The woRkologie E20LM02-AK220 is the lower cordless price, about £222.99, with the rear axle named, but the score is 74 from 3.7 and only 6 reviews. Neither result is a laboratory test.
