Peter F.Editor

A mulch mower is a walk-behind rotary that chops clippings and drops them on the lawn, usually with a plug that closes the chute to the grass box. In the UK you buy one for a lawn you already mow often, so less grass goes in the bin, and you still need a way to collect when growth is long, wet or diseased. Judge a listing by a stated plug or mulch mode, the cutting width, and whether a lead or a battery matches the garden. A plug is not the same as a shaped mulching deck, and cut-and-drop is not fine mulch. A corded mower needs an outdoor-rated lead, fully unwound, on a fused UK 3-pin plug, with an RCD. Read the cutting height in millimetres, and do not take more than about one third off in one pass. Do not assume the wheels are driven. Width, the plug and the power source are set out in our [mulch mower buying guide](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/mulch-mower/sub/mulch-mower-buying-guide).

The best mulch mowers in detail

Swift EB122C

Rank 1

Swift EB122C

∼£135

Our view

The Swift EB122C is £134.99, a 40 V 22 cm mower at 5.2 kg, with a 2.0 Ah pack and fast charger, mulch rather than a stated box, and three heights from 30 to 50 mm. The area bullet is up to 50 m². The listing line is 4.5 from 330 reviews. One saved review says the trigger failed at 13 months and the mower would not switch off until the pack was removed.

Pros

  • 5.2 kg, the lightest weight field in the set
  • 4.5 from 330 reviews
  • Mulch is the point of the listing, and reviewers confirm little to collect
  • Vertical storage and a fast charger are stated

Cons

  • 22 cm means more passes
  • 30 mm is the lowest stated cut
  • 2.0 Ah ran out on a small lawn for one reviewer
  • One trigger failure left the mower running until the pack came out

Best for: You want the lightest mower in this set for a very small or sloping lawn and you are happy to mulch.

Less suitable: You need a grass box, a cut below 30 mm, or a wide deck.

Common questions

Why does this listing take the top-pick badge?

Among kept mowers with at least 500 amazon.co.uk reviews, 4.4 from 1,182 is the highest star line. The score is that star rating times 20, which is 88. The badge is a sort rule, not a lab test.

What batteries are in the box?

The included line lists two 2 Ah batteries and one charger. The bullet says each pack cuts 250 m² and the mower is for up to 500 m². Reviewers often say 2 Ah is the limit.

What is the cutting height?

Five positions are stated. The bullet says 25 to 80 mm. The maximum field says 70 mm. The minimum field says 25 centimetres. Those three figures are not combined into one range.

How we compared

Ten amazon.co.uk listings are scored from the snapshot saved with this set, dated 19 October 2026. The score is the star rating multiplied by 20. That figure is the whole numeric score. It is not a laboratory mow. The top pick is the highest star line among kept listings with at least 500 reviews. Best value is the lowest saved price among kept listings that state a mulch plug or mulch mode and have at least 30 reviews.

Mulch mower buying guide

Choose the lawn before the badge. A lawn you already mow often is a different buy from wet or over-long grass, and a lead only works if the socket is within the cable.

What is a mulch mower?

A mulch mower is a walk-behind rotary that chops clippings and drops them, usually by fitting a plug that closes the path to the grass box. You buy one in the UK for a lawn you already mow often, so less grass goes in the green bin. You still need a way to collect when growth is long, wet or diseased. Warwickshire County Council treats a shaped mulching deck as a different machine from a collecting mower that only blocks the chute. Cut-and-drop is not fine mulch.

Best for

  • A lawn you already mow often, where you want fewer trips to the green bin
  • A socket within about 10 m, if you want a corded mower with a plug

Not ideal for

  • Wet, long or diseased grass, if mulch would be the only way to deal with clippings
  • A listing with no plug or mulch mode, or a charger that is not itemised

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Mulching wet or over-long grass

Mow dry grass, and do not take more than about one third of the height at once. The Royal Horticultural Society says not to mow in frost or on waterlogged soil. Warwickshire County Council says mow before the grass is about 8 cm if you will leave 4–5 cm. A plug does not retire the box when the grass is long, wet or diseased.

  2. 2

Reading 25 cm as the low cut

Height belongs in millimetres. A technical field that says 25 centimetres against a 25 mm bullet is a unit error, not a cutting height you can set. Do not combine a conflicting bullet, a maximum field and a minimum field into one range. If the figures do not agree, treat the height as unsettled.

  3. 3

    Assuming the wheels are driven

No listing in this set states self-propelled drive. “Automatic” on an operation-mode line is not driven wheels. You push the mower. A 1600 W lead left coiled is a separate mistake: unwind it, use a fused UK 3-pin plug and an RCD, and stop if the lead, plug or charger is damaged or hot.

What to weigh up

Mulch method and a second exit

High

The mulch method is the first thing that decides whether a listing belongs in this comparison. Confirm a plug, a named mulch mode, or cut-and-mulch wording. Cut-and-drop is not fine mulch. Warwickshire County Council treats a shaped mulching deck as different from a collecting mower that only closes the chute with a plug, and reviews disagree on how fine the returned cuttings are. A hover, or a mower-and-trimmer pack with no mulch line, is a different product.

Width, power and cutting height

High

After the plug, read width, power and height, in that order. Narrow decks, from about 22 cm, suit a small or broken lawn and need more passes. A 37–41 cm deck suits a more open lawn. Corded models of this type are 1600 W with a 10 m cable, so the socket has to be within that lead. The cable must be outdoor-rated, fully unwound, on a fused UK 3-pin plug, and used with an RCD, and you mow dry grass. Cordless models are 20 V, 24 V or 40 V.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Small or sloping lawn

You want a mower you can lift, and you will accept a narrow cut. The Swift EB122C is the lightest weight field in the set, 5.2 kg, with a 22 cm mulch blade and no stated box, at about £134.99. The listing line is 4.5 from 330 reviews. One reviewer ran out of the 2.0 Ah pack on a small lawn.

Common questions about mulch mowers

Which mulch mower is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is the Greenworks G40LM41. Among kept amazon.co.uk listings with at least 500 reviews, 4.4 from 1,182 is the highest star line, so the score is 88. It has a 41 cm cut, mulch or a 50 L bag, and two 2 Ah packs. The weight field is 20.8 kg, and the height figures do not agree. The score is the star rating times 20, not a laboratory mow.
How much does a mulch mower cost?
On the amazon.co.uk snapshot dated 19 October 2026, the ten kept listings run from about £79.99 to about £269.16. Entry rows sit at about £79.99 and about £109.99. Mid rows run from about £125.99 to about £158.31. Upper rows are about £219.99, about £229 and about £269.16. Those bands are this set, not a national average. A stated area in a bullet is not a measured lawn.
What should you check before you buy a mulch mower?
Confirm a plug, a mulch mode, or cut-and-mulch wording. Cut-and-drop is not fine mulch. Then read the cutting width. A narrow deck suits a small or broken lawn and needs more passes, and a wider deck suits a more open lawn. Match a lead or a battery to the garden, and read amp-hours separately from stated minutes or square metres. Keep a box or rear discharge for a wet week. Read the height in millimetres.
Is a mulch plug the same as a mulching deck?
No. Warwickshire County Council treats a shaped mulching deck as different from a collecting mower that uses a plug to close the path to the box. A plug returns cuttings, and reviews disagree on how fine those cuttings are. A hover, or a mower-and-trimmer pack with no mulch line, is a different product. Leaving clippings is not a measured fertiliser saving. A line about using less fertiliser is a council statement, not a test result.
Should you buy a corded or a cordless mulch mower?
A corded mower is 1600 W with a 10 m cable, so the socket has to sit within that lead. The lead must be outdoor-rated, fully unwound, on a fused UK 3-pin plug, and used with an RCD. Cordless models are 20 V, 24 V or 40 V. A named charger and an amp-hour figure matter more than a minutes bullet. If the charger is not itemised, do not assume it is in the box.
When should you stop and not mulch?
Mow dry grass. The Royal Horticultural Society says not to mow in frost or on waterlogged soil, and not to take more than about one third of the height at once. Warwickshire County Council says mow before the grass is about 8 cm if you will leave 4–5 cm. Stop if the lead, plug or charger is damaged or hot, if the blade will not turn or will not stop, or if a guard is missing.
What is the noise limit for a mulch mower?
Schedule 3 of the 2001 outdoor-equipment regulations allows 96 dB sound power for a lawnmower with a cutting width up to 50 cm. Every deck here is inside that width. No listing prints a decibel figure, so do not treat a quiet bullet as a measured label. Great Britain machinery also has to meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, including instructions and marking. Northern Ireland has a separate reading of that guide.
Where do cordless mulching mowers sit if you do not want a lead?
If you do not want a lead across the lawn, look for a cordless listing with a stated mulch mode, a named charger and an amp-hour figure. Area bullets such as 50, 200 or 500 square metres are claims, and long or wet grass shortens them. A cordless-only table is separate from this mixed set. See the cordless mulching lawn mower comparison.
