Mulching lawn mower buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at amazon.co.uk titles that all say mulch, and you have not chosen a width or a power source yet. This mulching lawn mower buying guide puts the decisions in order: clippings, then cutting width, then a lead or a battery, then a way to collect when the grass gets away. The ten walk-behind rotaries in the [mulch mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/mulch-mower) come from amazon.co.uk files dated 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not mow a lawn with them. Prices are those shelf figures in GBP. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the listing has to say about mulch

Start with the clipping method. Warwickshire County Council treats a dedicated mulching deck as a different machine from a collecting mower that you close with a plug. In this saved set the honest line is a supplied mulch plug, a named mulch mode, or wording that the clippings are cut and returned. Cut-and-drop is a looser claim. You still want a second exit. A plug suits a dry, regular lawn. A wet week, a holiday lawn or diseased grass is when a 30–50 litre box, a drop mode or rear discharge earns its place. The Murray kit states rear discharge as well as mulch, though six reviews is too thin to lean on. If the bullets never name a plug or a mulch mode, stop there. The mowing sequence is on the how to mulch mow page.

Width, then power

This set runs from 22 cm to 41 cm. The 33 cm cordless cluster sits in the middle. The 37 cm Forte, the 38 cm Hyundai HYM3800E and the 41 cm Greenworks are the open-lawn decks. There is no petrol mower here. EasyLawnMowing’s own rule of thumb puts petrol above about 1,200 m². The two corded listings are both 1600 W with a 10 m cable. That cable only helps if a socket is inside that reach and the lead is an outdoor one, fully unwound, on a fused UK 3-pin plug, with an RCD. Cordless rows here are 20 V, 24 V or 40 V. A stated area is the maker’s bullet, not a lawn we timed. The Hyundai HY20CLM33 names a battery and charger and does not state amp-hours. If the remaining argument is the lead against the pack, take it to the cordless or corded page. A narrow garden stays inside the 22–33 cm decks on the small lawn page.

Height, weight and a rear roller

None of these listings states self-propelled drive, so weight is the lift. The lightest row is the Swift 22 cm at 5.2 kg. The Greenworks 40 V weight field is 20.8 kg. A lowest step of 30 mm cannot match a 20 mm finish. One kept listing prints a height field of 25 cm against a 25 mm bullet. Do not average those figures. Only two listings state a rear roller: the corded Forte and the corded Hyundai HYM3800E. Reviewers on the Hyundai split on whether the plug behaves as fine mulch. The cordless 22 cm and 33 cm listings do not state a roller.

How to read the saved prices

Read mulch mode first, then cutting width, then pack or cable, then collection, then cutting heights. Stated area is a bullet. Long or wet grass shortens it. The saved prices fall in three bands from that 19 October 2026 capture. Entry is about £79.99 to about £109.99. Mid is about £125.99 to about £158.31, which includes the 1600 W Hyundai with 3,914 reviews. Upper is about £219.99 to about £269.16. A six-review line at 2.7 stars can sit in the middle of the prices and still tell you almost nothing about a second summer.

Common questions

Is a mulch plug the same as a mulching mower?
A plug closes the path to the box so clippings stay under the deck and get chopped again. Warwickshire County Council treats that as a compromise next to a deck shaped only for mulching. A stated plug or mulch mode is the entry ticket here. It does not promise the same fineness as a dedicated deck.
What cutting width do I need?
Match the deck to the shape of the lawn. This set runs from 22 cm to 41 cm. A narrow deck threads a small or broken lawn and needs more passes. A 37–41 cm deck suits a more open stretch, if you can store it and lift it.
Should the mower also collect?
Collect when the lawn sometimes gets away from you. Mulch is for a dry, regular cut. A box, a drop mode or rear discharge covers a wet week, a thick leaf layer, or diseased grass you should lift. A mulch-only line, with no box volume stated, is a poor fit when you must take clippings off the lawn.
Corded or cordless — where do I decide that?
Decide after width, once you know where the socket is. Both corded mowers here are 1600 W with a 10 m cable, so the lawn has to sit inside that lead, on a dry day, with an outdoor reel and an RCD. Cordless rows trade the lead for a pack whose amp-hours, minutes and square metres are three different claims.
What height range is enough for a UK lawn?
The RHS guides a conventional lawn to about 4 cm outside summer and about 2.5 cm in summer, with no more than about one third removed at once. A lowest step of 30 mm cannot copy a 20 mm setting. Read millimetres and centimetres separately when a listing prints both, and do not average them.
Do I need a rear roller?
Only if stripes are part of the job. Two listings state a rear roller, both corded: the Forte at about £79.99 and the Hyundai HYM3800E at about £158.31. One saved review on the Forte calls the roller light and the stripes short-lived. The cordless rows here do not state a roller.
