Boundary wire buying guide: metres, metal and pegs

Updated: October 2026

You have a wired robot mower, a tape measure, and a lawn that is not a perfect rectangle. A boundary wire buying guide is the order of checks before you pay: does this mower use a loop at all, what maximum the manual allows, how many metres the route actually needs, which metal the listing names, and whether pegs are in the box. The seven amazon.co.uk reels, with prices in GBP, are on the [Boundary wire comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/boundary-wire). Peter F. checked the saved listings on 22 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We did not install a loop.

What you are buying

Boundary wire is the low-voltage loop the charging station uses to mark the edge of the grass. On many models the same cable is also the guide that brings the mower home. It is not a mains extension, not an in-ground pet fence, and not a catenary rope. Those products show up in the same search and they do not belong on the station pins. The power supply still plugs into a UK socket. Gardena’s quick guide puts that supply on 100–240 V, and the R40Li manual says not to shorten or extend the low-voltage lead to the station. The cable in the grass is the signal. A wire-free mower has no loop pins for it. If the station has pins, the next number is the maximum in that chapter. A longer parcel cannot override it.

Length before brand

Measure the mowing perimeter, then add every island as an out-and-back, then the guide, then spare for joins. Mower Wire, a UK seller of Gardena-pattern cable, says to add 25–50% to the bare perimeter. That is a seller’s rule of thumb, not a British Standard. The maximum is model-specific. The Gardena R40Li manual allows 250 m on that model. A Yard Force article caps the loop it describes at 300 m. Neither figure is the limit for a WORX Landroid or a larger Automower. If the sketch plus spare is over the number in your manual, you change the layout or the machine. Once the metres fit, the metal is a separate decision on the tinned copper vs CCA boundary wire page. Husqvarna’s standard 2.7 mm reel is aluminium plus copper. Original is not a conductor.

Kit or spool

A wire-only spool still needs pegs and a coupler that matches the pins. A kit is cable, pegs and connectors in one carton, and only if the title matches the contents line. In this set the kits are the COZCLAM at about £33.52 (175 m, 100 pegs, 20 cable connectors and 10 terminals) and the FOTEEMO at about £27.98 (150 m and 50 pegs). Both name tinned copper-plated or copper-clad aluminium. UK reviews of the COZCLAM kit say the connectors were not up to the original mower’s connectors. If the manual says original couplers only, as Gardena’s UK page does for 4088-60, a gel connector can be waterproof and still be the wrong part. Gardena, JAVEX, WORX WA0184 and ECENCE are wire only in this set, from about £14.99 to about £82.99. None lists pegs. A 50 m spool finishes a short repair. It does not finish a 120 m perimeter with an island. How you peg or bury the route is the how to lay boundary wire page.

When the listing disagrees with itself

Read the bullet before you trust the title. One FOTEEMO listing is about £34.98. The title says 200 m and the kit bullet says 100 metres. You cannot plan a lawn on that reel until you have measured the cable. The other FOTEEMO listing, at about £27.98, agrees at 150 m. Do not treat the shared 4.3 from 12 reviews as two trials. The COZCLAM URL is B0DK6K6GK1. The details block prints 4.6 from 411 reviews next to ASIN B0DZFW51M4. Title, price and image follow the URL. ECENCE prints 0.13 inch and 17 AWG in one bullet and does not say which is the jacket. JAVEX states tinned copper and 3.4 mm, while the box contents are the cable. If a reel is not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the UK frame. Shelf prices on the comparison will move.

Common questions

How much boundary wire do I need for a UK garden?
Add the perimeter, an out-and-back for every island, the guide, and spare for joins. A seller’s rule of thumb, from Mower Wire, is 25–50% on top of the bare perimeter. Then stop at the maximum in your manual. The R40Li manual’s 250 m cap, and a 300 m cap in one Yard Force article, are examples for those texts, not a UK limit for every robot.
Is 2.7 mm the size to buy?
2.7 mm is a common jacket, including on Husqvarna’s standard reel, which that UK page specifies as aluminium plus copper. A 2.7 mm jacket can hide different conductor areas. JAVEX states 3.4 mm and tinned copper. FOTEEMO states 2.7 mm outer and 1.17 mm inner on clad aluminium. Match the metal and the station connector, not the jacket number on its own.
Should I buy the original spool or a universal kit?
Buy the original spool and the original coupler when the manual insists on them, as Gardena does for 4088-60, or when you are extending a tidy original loop. A universal kit is reasonable when you want pegs in the box and the listing names a length and a conductor the manual allows. A compatibility list is not proof the pins match. One UK review of the ECENCE spool said it did not fit.
Does a kit with pegs save a second order?
It does if you are pegging a new loop and the kit’s metre count is the one you measured. Pegs without wire are a different product and were not kept in this comparison. A kit does not save the order when the title and the contents line disagree on length.
Will this work on a wire-free mower?
No. This cable is for a station that sends a signal around a physical loop. A mower with no loop pins has nothing to connect it to. Read that model’s installation chapter before you order a reel. Whether the core should be tinned copper or clad aluminium, once you know you need a loop, is a separate page.
