Boundary wire break: pins first, then the test loop

Updated: October 2026

The station is flashing, or the mower says the wire is missing, and the first instinct is a new 150 m reel. A boundary wire break is often a pin that has worked loose, a connector that was never sealed, or one nick from a scarifier, a mole or a pet. You prove the station can still make a loop before you pay for another spool. The reels, if you do reach that point, are on the [Boundary wire comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/boundary-wire). Peter F. checked the saved listings on 22 October 2026. Check the pins before the garden

Unplug the supply, then look at the connectors before you walk the lawn. Gardena labels the boundary pins L and R and expects the right-hand wire on the right-hand pin. A Yard Force guide uses F and B. A wire in the wrong hole, or a pin that has pushed back, produces the same no-loop lamp as a cut 40 m away. Husqvarna’s UK repair article starts with connectors and known splices, and with ECO mode off. If you added a guide, include that connector. A guide that has pulled out, or that crosses the boundary, will stop docking even when the perimeter is intact. Only when those pins are seated, and the lamp in your manual is still the fault indication, do you build a test loop. Do not treat a blue flash on one WORX page as the code for a Gardena.

A short test loop

A test loop is a few metres of known-good wire on the station pins, in place of the garden. WORX’s wiki describes about 3 m for a classic Landroid. If that short loop shows a good signal, the station can still drive a loop and the fault is in the installed wire. If a new short loop still fails, stop. Another 150 m reel will fail the same way. The fault is then the station, the supply, or the pins. The Robot Mower, a UK guide, gives about 1 ohm per 100 m as a rule of thumb for a healthy loop. That figure is that site’s rule of thumb, not a specification of these reels. A WORX owner replaced a whole box after an E1 wire-missing error and never saw a break. Do the short loop first.

Find the cut

Walk the wire before you buy a detector. Look for a scarifier line, a lifted peg, a pet run, and every coupler you fitted last year. The Robot Mower notes that more than one break after winter is common. After each repair, put the garden back on the pins and read the lamp again. WORX support describes an AM radio tuned near 700 kHz, or a clamp-on detector, as one way to hear where the signal stops. That note is for the model on that page, and it will not help if the station is dead. Try it only after the test loop has worked. Husqvarna’s UK article then has you swap the guide and boundary connections and test each half. If the wire runs under paving you cannot lift, call an installer.

Repair the spot or replace the reel

One visible cut, in wire that is otherwise sound, is a coupler. Gardena’s UK page for the 150 m reel says original Gardena couplers only. A gel connector may be waterproof and still be the wrong pin. Strip back to bright metal and do not leave bare copper in the soil. Replace the reel when the wire is brittle, when the search cannot find the cut, or when the same place breaks every season. A new reel is the last step. Who it is for sits on the best boundary wire page. A 50 m spool covers a short guide. It does not replace a 150 m perimeter. Laying a fresh route, once the old one is finished, is how to lay boundary wire. Do not put a fence energiser on a station that is still connected.

Common questions

Can I find the break with a radio?
WORX support describes an AM radio near 700 kHz, or a clamp-on detector, after you know the station is sending. Walk until the signal changes, then repair that spot and test again. Do not expect the same trick on every brand, and do not start with the radio if a 3 m test loop already fails. The station is not transmitting a break you can hear.
What if I find one break and the lamp still flashes?
Assume a second break until a test says otherwise. The Robot Mower notes that more than one cut after winter is common, especially where a scarifier, a pet or a lifted peg has worked along the same edge. Repair, reconnect, and read the lamp. Keep halving the remaining section rather than replacing the whole reel at the first nick.
Should I replace the whole cable?
Replace it when the wire is brittle, when the search cannot find the cut, or when the same spot fails every season. Do not replace it because the lamp flashed once and a connector was loose. A Gardena or WORX review that describes a full new loop is an owner’s ending, not the first step. Choose the reel on the comparison only after the test loop has blamed the garden.
When do I stop and call someone?
Stop when a new short test loop on the pins still fails, or when the suspect wire is under paving you cannot lift. Also stop if the lawn meets open water or a public edge and you are unsure how far back the barrier should be. Two neighbouring systems that interfere are a layout job. A connector you can see at the station is still yours to reseat.
Which connector should I use?
Use the coupler the mower maker specifies. Gardena’s 150 m page says original couplers only. A connector packed with a universal kit can seal a joint and still be the wrong fitting for the pins. If you are joining a repair into an original loop, match that loop’s coupler rather than the cheapest terminal in the drawer.
