Lava mulch comparison 2026

The best lava mulches, compared.

Top pick: CARURBODY red lava stones, 15 lb Best value: SOUJOY tumbled lava rocks, 10 lb – Best value on price per kilogram among the multi-kilogram bags, about £3.52/kg at about £15.99 for 4.54 kg. Updated October 2026.

Lava mulch is vesicular volcanic rock, usually scoria, that you buy in the UK as a mineral cover for a bed, a grit or top dressing for a pot, or as stones for a gas barbecue or a fire pit. It is not a fertiliser, and it does not turn into compost. Gravel, slate and stone chippings are non-biodegradable mulch: they can block light from weed seeds and slow evaporation, and they do not improve soil structure or fertility the way composted bark does. You tell a suitable bag apart by piece size and by the job, not by a bullet that lists every use. About 3–6 mm is pot grit. About 10–16 mm is landscape gravel. About 4–8 cm is fire cobble. Beds you replant, and plants that need organic matter, still want bark or compost. Pots want a rinsed fine grade. A gas burner wants the size in the appliance manual, kept off the pilot. Grade, weight and job are set out in the [lava mulch buying guide](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/lava-mulch/sub/lava-mulch-buying-guide).

Lava mulch is vesicular volcanic rock, usually scoria, that you buy in the UK as a mineral cover for a bed, a grit or top dressing for a pot, or as stones for a gas barbecue or a fire pit.

CARURBODY red lava stones, 15 lb

Rank 1

CARURBODY red lava stones, 15 lb

∼£73

Our view

CARURBODY lists red volcanic rock for cactus and succulent top dressing at £73.34. The title says 15 lb and the item weight is 6.69 kg, while the unit count says 28.633 gram. There is no piece size. The star line is 5.0 from 1, with no review text. £73.34 on the 6.69 kg item weight is about £10.96/kg, and the rank line is 434,584 in Garden. The title names a top dressing for cacti, succulents and bonsai, and it does not mention a burner or a temperature. With one star and no review text, there is no UK complaint or praise to weigh.

Pros

  • Title names cacti, succulents and bonsai
  • Item weight 6.69 kg is close to the 15 lb title

Cons

  • £73.34 with no piece size
  • Unit count 28.633 g conflicts with 6.69 kg
  • 5.0 from 1 and no review text

Best for: Only as a named cactus top dressing if the missing piece size is acceptable.

Less suitable: Any comparison that needs a grade, a UK review, or a consistent unit-count field.

What do the reviews say?

The star line is 5.0 from 1 review. The listing has no review text, so there is no praise or complaint to record.

Is this a fire-pit rock?

The title names a top dressing for cacti, succulents and bonsai. It does not mention a burner, a temperature, or a piece size.

Black Rock Grill lava rocks, pack of 2

Rank 2

Black Rock Grill lava rocks, pack of 2

∼£39

Our view

This is the Black Rock Grill 4–8 cm rock as a pack of two, item weight 8 kg, at £39.00, model 936. Each unit is described as 4 kg. The 4.5 from 2,160 and the 50 UK texts are the same sample as ASIN B00ECXW86A, so they are not a second test. £39.00 on the 8 kg item weight is about £4.88/kg, the same unit price as the single bag. A flavour field on the listing says Coffee, which is not a rock specification, and the country of origin is blank. The bullets also leave tray fit, heat-up time and a four-burner load unanswered.

Pros

  • 8 kg item weight at £39.00, about £4.88/kg, same unit price as the single bag
  • Piece size 4–8 cm stated per unit

Cons

  • Reviews are duplicated from B00ECXW86A
  • Flavour field says Coffee, which is not a rock spec
  • Country of origin is not on the listing

Best for: Someone who wants two 4 kg bags of the same 4–8 cm Black Rock Grill rock in one order.

Less suitable: A reader treating the 2,160 reviews as a second, independent UK test.

Common questions

How many kilograms are in the pack?

The title says 4 kg and pack of 2. A line says the details apply to each unit, and each unit is 4 kg at 4–8 cm. The item-weight field is 8 kg. The price is £39.00. Model 936.

Is the star rating a separate UK test from the 4 kg bag?

No. The star line is the same 4.5 from 2,160, and the 50 review texts are the same United Kingdom reviews as the 4 kg listing.

Do the bullets answer the tray and four-burner questions?

No. The bullets do not say whether the rocks fit under a barbecue tray, how long they take to heat, or whether 4 kg is enough for a four-burner barbecue.

Black Rock Grill lava rocks, 4 kg

Rank 3

Black Rock Grill lava rocks, 4 kg

∼£20

Our view

Black Rock Grill lists 4 kg of 4–8 cm lava rock at £19.50, made in Turkey, model 936. The bullets name fire, aquarium and garden uses, and say 2 kg covers about 35 by 25 cm. The star line is 4.5 from 2,160 UK reviews, shared with ASIN B0HCWGV32Y. One bullet says 24 kg, which the item-weight field does not support. UK reviews repeat heat on a gas barbecue, pieces too large for a small tray, and bags that split. The listing gives no temperature figure and no square-metre bed rate, so the 35 by 25 cm line stays a claim about one layer of large stones. Garden rank on the listing is 5,831, and 23 in Barbecuing Charcoal.

Pros

  • 4 kg at £19.50, about £4.88/kg on the item weight
  • Piece size stated as 4–8 cm
  • Largest UK review sample in this set, 4.5 from 2,160

Cons

  • Bullet “24kg Quantity” conflicts with the 4 kg weight
  • UK reviews repeatedly say pieces are too big for small trays
  • Same 2,160 reviews as the 8 kg twin pack, not a second test

Best for: A gas barbecue or fire pit whose manual accepts about 4–8 cm rock, if you can break the largest pieces.

Less suitable: A succulent pot or a border measured in square metres. This grade is cobble, and 2 kg is only a 35 by 25 cm patch on the bullet.

Common questions

What size and weight does this listing state?

The style line is 4–8 cm and 4 kg, and the item-weight field is 4 kg. One bullet also says “24kg Quantity”, which does not match that 4 kg line. Colour is listed as brown. Country of origin is Turkey. Model 936.

What jobs does the listing name?

The bullets name BBQs, fire pits, chimineas, tandoori ovens, aquariums, pond filtration and garden mulch. A coverage line says 2 kg covers about 35 by 25 cm. The listing does not give a square-metre rate for a bed, and it does not answer the weed-suppression or fish-safety questions.

What do the saved UK reviews say?

The star line is 4.5 from 2,160. The first 50 texts are from the United Kingdom and are the same reviews as the pack-of-2 listing. Repeated points are heat on a gas barbecue, pieces too large for a small tray, and bags that split.

YUNSTK horticultural lava mix, 2 lb

Rank 4

YUNSTK horticultural lava mix, 2 lb

∼£10

Our view

YUNSTK lists 907 g of mixed horticultural lava at £9.99, with a 2 litre volume field and no millimetre grade. A bullet calls it a pumice-based mix with zeolite and maifan. The star line is 4.4 from 243, and the UK reviews praise small-pot colour while complaining about dust and a short bag. The manufacturer field reads YUNLEX, and £9.99 on 907 g is about £11.01/kg. UK reviews dispute the fill: one put the volume near 800 ml, and one weighed 880 g against the 2 litre line. The same texts still place the mix on small cactus, succulent and bonsai pots.

Pros

  • 907 g at £9.99 for small pots
  • UK reviews describe it on cacti, succulents and bonsai
  • Star line 4.4 from 243

Cons

  • No stated millimetre grade
  • Bullet mixes lava with pumice, zeolite and maifan
  • UK reviews report dust, short fill and duller colour

Best for: A thin top dressing on a few cactus or succulent pots, after a rinse, if a small colourful bag is enough.

Less suitable: A border or a fire pit. There is no piece size in centimetres, and UK reviews say the bag is small for the price.

Common questions

Is this a single grade of lava?

The title calls it horticultural lava rock, 2 lb. One bullet calls it a pumice-based potting mix and names zeolite and maifan. No millimetre size is stated. The manufacturer field is YUNLEX, and the brand is YUNSTK.

What weight and volume does the listing give?

Item weight is 907 g. The volume field is 2 litres. UK reviews on the listing dispute the fill: one said about 800 ml, and one weighed 880 g. The price is £9.99.

What do UK reviews repeat?

The star line is 4.4 from 243. In the UK reviews, buyers like the colour on small succulent and cactus pots, and they often say the bag is small, dusty, or not the colour in the photos.

Anothera red lava granules, 5 lb

Rank 5

Anothera red lava granules, 5 lb

∼£32

Our view

Anothera lists 5 lb of red lava granules at £31.72, item weight 2.27 kg, with a 1/2 inch size bullet. The volume field says 1 litre and the unit count says about 2.37 litres. The star line is 4.4 from 176, and the review texts are not from the United Kingdom. Half an inch is about 13 mm, and the title aims that granule at bonsai, cacti and succulents, while a later bullet also names fire pits. The price is about £13.97/kg on 2.27 kg, and the unit-count field says 2365.8824 millilitres against a 1 litre volume. The 38 review texts are from the United States, plus one from the United Arab Emirates, so they are not UK pot experience.

Pros

  • Piece size stated as 1/2 inch
  • Title weight 5 lb matches the 2.27 kg item weight

Cons

  • £31.72 for 2.27 kg, about £13.97/kg
  • Volume field 1 litre conflicts with a 2366 ml unit count
  • No UK review text on the listing

Best for: A pot granule around 13 mm for bonsai or succulents, if you ignore the non-UK review text.

Less suitable: A UK review comparison, or a gas burner that needs 4–8 cm cobble. The volume fields also disagree.

Common questions

What grade and weight are stated?

The title is 5 lb. Item weight is 2.27 kg. A bullet says 1/2 inch red lava, sifted. The volume field says 1 litre and the unit count says 2365.8824 millilitres, so those two fields conflict. The price is £31.72.

Are the saved reviews from the United Kingdom?

No. The star line is 4.4 from 176. The 38 texts on the listing are from the United States, plus one from the United Arab Emirates. Do not read them as UK buyers.

Is 1/2 inch a bed mulch or a pot grit?

The title and the size bullet aim it at bonsai, cacti and succulents. A later bullet also names fire pits. Half an inch is about 13 mm, which is granule, not the 4–8 cm fire cobble in the Black Rock Grill listings.

Rahato black lava rocks, 10 lb

Rank 6

Rahato black lava rocks, 10 lb

∼£46

Our view

Rahato’s 10 lb listing says black lava at 1/2 to 2 inches, item weight 4.59 kg, at £45.84, with a 2000°F bullet and a dry-before-lighting line. The star line is 4.4 from 71. The 29 review texts are from the United States and match the 20 lb ASIN, and they discuss red rock. £45.84 on 4.59 kg is about £9.99/kg, and 4.59 kg sits close to a 10 lb title. The bullet states up to 2000°F (1093°C) and says to keep the rocks dry before lighting, which is the seller’s line rather than a UK appliance approval. The shared US texts describe red rock, so they do not confirm the black title.

Pros

  • Piece size and a dry-before-lighting line are in the bullets
  • Item weight 4.59 kg is close to a 10 lb title

Cons

  • £45.84 for 4.59 kg, about £9.99/kg
  • 4.4 from 71 is shared with B0FZV7SVRT and the texts are US
  • Title says black while the shared reviews describe red

Best for: Only if the manual wants roughly 13–51 mm fire rock and you accept a non-UK review sample.

Less suitable: A UK-reviewed bag, or a reader who needs the photos to match a black grade. The shared texts talk about red rock.

Common questions

What does this 10 lb listing state?

The title says black lava, 10 lb, 1/2 to 2 inches, for fire pits and gas fireplaces. Item weight is 4.59 kg. A bullet states up to 2000°F (1093°C) and says to keep the rocks dry before lighting. The price is £45.84. Country of origin is not on the listing.

Are the 71 reviews a UK sample?

The star line is 4.4 from 71. The 29 review texts are from the United States and are the same texts as on the 20 lb ASIN B0FZV7SVRT. Several of those texts describe red rock, while this title says black.

Is the 2–3 inch layer a garden coverage rate?

No. The bullet recommends a 2–3 inch layer for flame coverage. It does not say how many square metres 4.59 kg will cover on a bed.

Rahato red lava rocks, 20 lb

Rank 7

Rahato red lava rocks, 20 lb

∼£58

Our view

Rahato’s 20 lb listing says red lava at 1/2 to 2 inches, at £58.46, from China. The item weight is 8.51 kg, below a 20 lb title. The 4.4 from 71 and the 29 US texts are the same sample as the 10 lb ASIN B0FZV4HQRT. A 20 lb title is about 9.07 kg, so 8.51 kg is short of the headline, and £58.46 on that item weight is about £6.87/kg. The bullet repeats up to 2000°F (1093°C) and says the rocks must be completely dry before lighting. Country of origin is China, and the red title matches the shared US texts more closely than the black 10 lb listing does.

Pros

  • Red colour matches the shared review texts better than the black title
  • Piece size and a dry-before-lighting line are stated
  • China is named as country of origin

Cons

  • Item weight 8.51 kg is below the 20 lb title
  • £58.46
  • 4.4 from 71 is the same US sample as B0FZV4HQRT

Best for: A larger red bag in the 13–51 mm band, if the 8.51 kg item weight is the figure you trust.

Less suitable: A separate UK test from the 10 lb Rahato bag. The star line and the texts are shared.

Common questions

Does 20 lb match the item weight?

The title and the bullet say 20 lb. The item-weight field is 8.51 kg, which is under 20 lb (about 9.07 kg). Country of origin is China. The price is £58.46. Piece size is 1/2 to 2 inches.

Is this a different review sample from the 10 lb Rahato bag?

No. Both listings show 4.4 from 71, and the 29 review texts are the same United States texts.

What heat limit is printed?

The bullet says up to 2000°F (1093°C) without cracking, and it says the rocks must be completely dry before lighting. That is the seller’s line, not a UK appliance approval.

SOUJOY tumbled lava rocks, 10 lb

Rank 8

SOUJOY tumbled lava rocks, 10 lb

∼£16

Our view

SOUJOY lists 10 lb of 2–3 inch tumbled lava at £15.99, with an item weight of 4.54 kg, from China. That is about £3.52/kg, the lowest unit price among the multi-kilogram bags in this set. The star line is 4.1 from 41, and only four of the 13 review texts are from the United Kingdom. The bullets say tumbling takes off sharp edges, and they name gas fires without a temperature figure. A garden line mentions planter beds and mulch, and it still gives no square-metre rate. One of the four UK texts said the stones were no good for that buyer’s barbecue.

Pros

  • £15.99 for 4.54 kg, about £3.52/kg
  • Title weight matches the 4.54 kg item weight
  • Size stated as 2–3 inches, tumbled

Cons

  • Only 4 of 13 review texts are from the United Kingdom
  • One UK review said they were no good for a barbecue
  • No coverage figure for a bed

Best for: A fire pit or grill that wants tumbled stones around 5–8 cm, at the lowest £/kg in this multi-kilogram set.

Less suitable: A fine pot dressing. These pieces are 2–3 inches, and one UK review said they were no good for that buyer’s barbecue.

Common questions

How big is the bag, and what size are the stones?

The title and the package bullet say 10 pounds, and the item-weight field is 4.54 kg. The stated size is 2 to 3 inches. Tumbling is said to remove sharp edges. Country of origin is China.

Does the listing give a garden coverage rate?

No. The garden bullet names moisture, planter beds and garden mulch, and it does not give a square-metre rate. The fire bullet names gas dispersion for indoor and outdoor gas fires, with no temperature figure.

Where do the saved reviews come from?

The star line is 4.1 from 41. The listing has 13 texts. The first four are from the United Kingdom. The rest are from Canada or the United States, so they are not a UK sample.

Lava-Lite Plus pot stones, 3 litres

Rank 9

Lava-Lite Plus pot stones, 3 litres

∼£13

Our view

Lava-Lite Plus is a 3 litre, 1.75 kg stone topper at £12.99 from decco, part 005496. The bullets name pots and borders and do not state a piece size or a rock type. The star line is 3.4 from 10, and the five UK texts are mostly about dust and a bag smaller than 3 litres. The listing gives bag dimensions of 30 by 25 by 9 cm, and £12.99 on 1.75 kg is about £7.42/kg. Two of the five UK texts centre on dust, one at about 20 percent and one at about 80 percent, and another describes a small grey-white bag. The bullets say natural stone and do not confirm a lava grade.

Pros

  • 3 litre size line and 1.75 kg item weight at £12.99
  • Bullets name pots, borders and indoor use

Cons

  • No piece size
  • UK texts describe a dusty bag and a short fill
  • Rock type is not stated, so the lava claim is unconfirmed here

Best for: Only if you accept an unnamed stone grade and will sieve dust before using it on a pot.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a stated millimetre grade, or a bag the reviews describe as mostly dust.

Common questions

What is in the bag?

The size line is 3 litres. Item weight is 1.75 kg. Dimensions are 30 by 25 by 9 cm. The manufacturer is decco, part 005496. No piece size and no mineral grade are stated. The price is £12.99.

What do the five UK reviews say?

The star line is 3.4 from 10. Of five texts, two centre on dust, one says about 20 percent and one says about 80 percent. Another describes a small grey-white bag and discolour. One text is only the word Good.

Does the listing prove it is lava?

The product name is Lava-Lite Plus. The bullets say natural stone for pots and borders. They do not give a rock type, a millimetre grade, or a pH. Treat the lava identity as unconfirmed on this listing.

SHINEOFI lava stones, 150 g

Rank 10

SHINEOFI lava stones, 150 g

∼£14

Our view

SHINEOFI lists multicolour volcanic stones at £14.49. The technical line is 150 g, and each piece is about 3.5 by 3.5 by 2.5 cm, while the title says large bag. The star line is 3.4 from 4. Two UK texts call the bag small and dusty. £14.49 for 150 g is about £96.60/kg, and one UK review counted about 15 pieces. The bullets name landscaping and garden decor, but a handful of stones around 3.5 cm is not a coverage bag for a bed.

Pros

  • Piece size is stated
  • 150 g weight is explicit in the technical details
  • Two UK review texts

Cons

  • £14.49 for 150 g, about £96.60/kg
  • Title says large bag
  • Dust and about 15 pieces in the UK texts

Best for: A handful of stones for one small pot or a tank, if 150 g is what you meant to buy.

Less suitable: Any border. One UK review says small bag would describe it better.

Common questions

How large is the large bag?

The item weight is 150 g. Product dimensions are 3.5 by 3.5 by 2.5 cm, and the bullet gives almost the same size per piece, about 1.37 by 1.37 by 0.98 inches. A UK review says about 15 pieces. The price is £14.49.

What do the two UK reviews say?

The star line is 3.4 from 4. One review says the large-bag wording is misleading. The other says the stones suit a planter or aquarium and are very dusty.

Is this a border mulch?

The bullets name landscaping and garden decor, but 150 g is a handful of pieces around 3.5 cm. It is not a coverage bag for a bed.

jojofuny lava rock, 150 g

Rank 11

jojofuny lava rock, 150 g

∼£10

Our view

jojofuny lists 150 g of 2–4 cm lava at £10.19 for aquariums and plant displays. The item-weight field says 160 g and the colour field says Multi, while the title says black. The listing has no customer-review line. The dimensions on the listing are 3.5 by 3.5 by 2.5 cm, and £10.19 is about £63.69/kg on the 160 g item-weight field. The pack bullet calls 150 g a small decorating amount, not a border coverage bag. With no star line, nothing on the listing checks the black title against the Multi colour field.

Pros

  • Piece size 2–4 cm is in the title
  • Pack bullet states 150 g

Cons

  • Item weight 160 g and colour Multi conflict with the title
  • No star line and no review text
  • About £64/kg on the 160 g field

Best for: A 150 g aquarium or vase handful, if black versus multi does not matter.

Less suitable: A garden bed, or any choice that depends on UK reviews. The listing has none.

Common questions

What weight and size are stated?

The title and the pack bullet say 150 g and 2 to 4 cm. The item-weight field is 160 g, and the dimensions are 3.5 by 3.5 by 2.5 cm. The price is £10.19. There is no star line.

Black or multi?

The title says black. The colour field says Multi. The listing does not resolve that.

Will 150 g cover a bed?

The pack bullet calls 150 g a small decorating amount. It is not a border coverage bag.

How we compared

Eleven amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the listing pages and the review notes kept with them. Shelf date 21 October 2026. There is no laboratory test and no Royal Horticultural Society trial of these bags. Stars, the size of the review sample, a stated piece size, whether the title weight matches the item weight, and whether the review text is from the United Kingdom make up the score. Price per kilogram is not inside that 100. It is used only to name the best value. A high score does not mean the bag feeds soil, suppresses every weed, or is safe in an aquarium. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Stars

40%

The amazon.co.uk star line out of 5, scaled to 40. In this set that is 36 for 4.5, 35 for 4.4, 33 for 4.1, 27 for 3.4, 40 for 5.0, and 0 when the listing has no star line.

2

Review sample

25%

A larger review sample scores higher, up to 25. Where the sample was halved, the review texts are not from the United Kingdom, so they do not count as a UK sample.

3

Piece size

15%

A stated size scores 15. A mix with no millimetre grade scores 5. No stated size scores 0. The size is what separates pot grit, landscape gravel and fire cobble.

4

Weight match

10%

A title weight that matches the item-weight field scores 10. A conflicting bullet, unit count or title weight scores 4. The clash stays visible. It is not averaged away.

5

UK review text

10%

Review texts from the United Kingdom score 10. No UK text, or no text at all, scores 0. A star line shared by two pack sizes is one sample, not a second test.

Lava mulch buying guide

Buy the piece size and the job before you buy the star line. Fire cobble, pot grit and a bed cover are not one list. Prices below are amazon.co.uk shelf prices on 21 October 2026. This is not a laboratory test.

What to match before you buy

Lava mulch is vesicular volcanic rock, usually scoria. You buy it in the UK as a mineral cover, as pot grit, or as fire-pit and barbecue stone. It is not a fertiliser, and it does not become compost. Gravel, slate and stone chippings can block light from weed seeds and slow evaporation. They do not improve soil structure or fertility the way composted bark does. A bullet that lists every use does not change the piece size. Piece size is the first check.

Best for

  • A gas barbecue or fire pit whose manual accepts about 4–8 cm rock
  • A few cactus or succulent pots that need a rinsed fine grade
  • A settled, fairly dry border where you still feed the plants separately

Not ideal for

  • A bed you replant, or plants that need organic matter in the cover
  • Anyone treating a 150 g pack as coverage for a border
  • A buyer who reads a shared star line as two separate UK tests

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Barbecue cobbles on a bed

About 4–8 cm is fire rock. A border or a succulent pot wants a much smaller grade. A bullet that names every use does not change the size.

  2. 2

    A 150 g pack treated as coverage

A handful of stones is décor. It is not a square-metre rate, and a title that says large bag does not make 150 g into a border mulch.

  3. 3

    Lighting wet fire rock

Wet lava can pop. Dry it first, keep dust off the jets, and do not put ordinary garden stones in a burner. Call a Gas Safe engineer for a gas smell or delayed ignition.

What to weigh up

Piece size and job

High

Buy the grade before you buy the star line. About 3–6 mm is pot grit. About 10–16 mm is landscape gravel for a thin mineral cover. About 4–8 cm is fire cobble for a gas barbecue or fire pit whose manual accepts that size. A bullet that names fire, an aquarium and a border together does not turn cobble into grit. Settled, fairly dry borders can take stone.

Weight, cover and price per kilogram

High

Read net weight against the title. A title in pounds should sit close to the item-weight field in kilograms. A clash, such as a 24 kg bullet on a 4 kg bag, or a gram line on a multi-kilogram title, is a reason to hesitate. Volume fields that disagree with the unit count are the same kind of clash. Do not copy a dense-gravel coverage rate onto lava. One supplier says 8 kg of 10–14 mm red lava covers about 0.5 m² at 20 mm.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A gas barbecue or fire pit

You need the grade the appliance manual accepts, kept dry and off the pilot. Black Rock Grill lava rocks, 4 kg, are the top pick at about £19.50, stated as 4–8 cm, with 4.5 from 2,160 reviews. UK reviews say the largest pieces are too big for a small tray. One bullet says 24 kg, which the 4 kg item weight does not support.

Cactus, succulent and bonsai pots

You need a small rinsed grade, not a 4 kg cobble bag. YUNSTK horticultural lava mix, 2 lb, is about £9.99 for 907 g, with 4.4 from 243 reviews and UK comments on small pots. There is no millimetre grade, and a bullet mixes lava with pumice, zeolite and maifan. UK reviews also mention dust and a short fill.

A settled, fairly dry border

Stone can cover a border you are not about to replant, and it still does not feed the soil. This set is mostly 4–8 cm fire rock or tiny décor packs, not 10–16 mm landscape gravel. Lava-Lite Plus names pots and borders at about £12.99 for 3 litres, but it states no piece size and UK reviews describe dust. For a bed that needs organic matter, use bark instead.

Common questions about lava mulches

What is lava mulch, and does it feed the soil?
Lava mulch is vesicular volcanic rock, usually scoria. In the UK you buy it as a mineral cover for a bed, as grit for a pot, or as stones for a gas barbecue or fire pit. It is not a fertiliser and it does not become compost. Gravel and stone chippings can block light from weed seeds and slow evaporation. They do not improve soil structure the way composted bark does. You still fertilise if the plants need feeding.
Which piece size should you buy?
Match the piece size to the job. About 3–6 mm is pot grit. About 10–16 mm is landscape gravel for a thin bed. About 4–8 cm is fire cobble. A bullet that names fire pits, aquariums and garden mulch together does not change the grade. Do not put barbecue cobbles on a bed, and do not put fine grit on a gas burner. The appliance manual sets the fire size, and the rock stays off the pilot.
Which lava mulch is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is Black Rock Grill lava rocks, 4 kg, at about £19.50. The score is for a stated 4–8 cm fire or barbecue job. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 2,160 reviews, the largest UK sample here. One bullet says 24 kg, which the 4 kg item weight does not support. UK reviews say the pieces are too big for a small tray and that bags split. It is a poor fit for a succulent pot or a border in square metres.
Which bag is the best value?
The best value is SOUJOY tumbled lava rocks, 10 lb, at about £15.99 for 4.54 kg, about £3.52 per kilogram. That is the lowest price per kilogram among the multi-kilogram bags. The title weight matches the item weight, and the stones are stated as 2–3 inches, tumbled. The star line is 4.1 from 41 reviews, and only four of the 13 review texts are from the United Kingdom. One UK review said they were no good for that barbecue. The listing gives no bed coverage figure.
When is bark a better cover than lava mulch?
Stone does not feed the soil. Use it on a settled, fairly dry border when you want a long-lasting mineral cover, and keep any feed as a separate job. Beds you replant, and plants that need organic matter, still want composted bark. Organic mulch is usually at least 5 cm deep, ideally 7.5 cm, and about 10 cm off woody stems. How the covers differ is in the bark mulch comparison. A lava layer is not a total weed killer.
Can you put lava rock on a gas fire pit?
Use lava on a gas fire pit only when the appliance manual accepts that size, and only when the rock is dry. Wet lava can pop, and dust and rock should stay off the pilot. There is no single correct depth, and ordinary garden stones are unsafe in a burner. Do not pour dusty grit onto the jets. A seller line such as 2000°F is the seller's claim, not a UK appliance approval. Call a Gas Safe engineer for a gas smell, delayed ignition, or flame under the pan.
How much ground does a bag cover?
Do not copy a dense-gravel rate onto lava, and do not treat a barbecue slogan as a 5 cm bed rate. One supplier of 10–14 mm red lava says 8 kg covers about 0.5 m² at 20 mm. A line that 2 kg covers 35 by 25 cm is one layer of large stones, not a garden rate. A 25 kg gravel figure of about 0.6 m² at 5 cm is denser stone, not lava. A 150 g pack is a handful for one pot, not border coverage.
What if the bag is not as described?
Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the frame when goods are not of satisfactory quality or not as described. UK reviews on these listings mention dust, a short fill, split bags, and colour that does not match the photos. A 150 g pack titled as a large bag is a description problem, not a border mulch. For unsafe goods, use Citizens Advice in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland, or the local council in Northern Ireland.

Our verdict

The top pick for a stated 4–8 cm fire or barbecue job is Black Rock Grill lava rocks, 4 kg, at about £19.50. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 2,160 reviews, the largest UK sample here. One bullet says 24 kg, which the 4 kg item weight does not support, and UK reviews say the pieces are too big for a small tray. The best value on price per kilogram among the multi-kilogram bags is SOUJOY tumbled lava rocks, 10 lb, at about £15.99 for 4.54 kg, about £3.52 per kilogram. The 8 kg Black Rock Grill twin scores higher and carries no badge. It is the same rock and the same 2,160 reviews, not a second test. None of these scores is a laboratory test. A high score does not mean the bag feeds the soil.
