Pine mulch comparison 2026

The best pine mulches, compared.

Top pick: Suttons RHS Sylvabark pine mini mulch 50 L Best value: Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L – Lowest single-bag price per litre among bags whose volume agrees: about 33p at about £19.68, with a printed 3–18 mm screen and 4.6 from 391 reviews. Updated October 2026.

Pine mulch for a UK patio or a small border is screened pine bark, sold as mini chips or a finer mini mulch. You buy it to tidy pots, tubs and window boxes, to hold moisture, and to slow annual weeds. A suitable bag names pine bark, prints a particle screen, and states a litre volume that matches the pack count. Peat-free is a contents fact. A forestry-chain mark is about sourcing. An RHS endorsement, where a bag claims one, belongs to that named bag size. Judge depth next. The Royal Horticultural Society advises at least 5 cm, ideally 7.5 cm, on moist soil that is not frozen, with an 8–10 cm gap at woody stems. A 25 mm line on a listing is a cosmetic layer. Mini chips are a decorative cover, separate from play-grade bark, and they are not a fertiliser. Woody mulch left on the surface does not acidify the soil below or strip nitrogen from established plants. The checks on the bag are in the [pine mulch buying guide](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/pine-mulch/sub/pine-mulch-buying-guide).

The best pine mulches in detail

Suttons RHS Sylvabark pine mini mulch 50 L

Rank 1

Suttons RHS Sylvabark pine mini mulch 50 L

∼£24

Our view

The Suttons 50 litre RHS Sylvabark bag is peat-free screened pine mini mulch at about £23.50, with a printed flake size of 3–18 mm and a claim that it resembles cocoa shells. Title and volume both say 50 litres. Bullets claim weed suppression and moisture hold for pots, planters, window boxes and borders, and they print a 25 mm spread depth, which is thinner than Melcourt’s 50 mm pot minimum and the RHS 5 cm bed figure. The star line is 5.0 from 7 reviews. Only one UK review text is on file. It says the chips look delicate and smarter than decorative bark from a DIY chain, and that they made flower beds look tidier. Seven ratings with one text are a thin sample next to Suregreen’s 169. It is a well-specified 50 litre face if you want peat-free and 3–18 mm in writing. It is not a stronger evidence file than the Suregreen SylvaBark bag at about £23.35.

Pros

  • Printed 3–18 mm flake size and 50 litres that agree
  • Peat-free and no green waste on the bullets
  • Weed and moisture claims for pots, window boxes and borders

Cons

  • Listing prints a 25 mm spread, thinner than maker and RHS depths
  • 5.0 from 7 reviews, with only one UK review text on file
  • No listed weight
  • Same price band as other 50 litre faces, with a thinner review file than Suregreen

Best for: A patio or small bed when you want peat-free and 3–18 mm printed, and you accept a thin review file.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs Suregreen’s 169-review trail, or who will lay 25 mm and expect weed control.

Invigortex Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L

Rank 2

Invigortex Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L

∼£23

Our view

The Invigortex listing is one 60 litre bag sold as Melcourt pine mini chips at about £22.99, about 38p a litre, with title and volume both at 60 litres and a listed weight of 10 kg. That weight is half the 20 kg on the Melcourt-branded 60 litre face, and the listing does not explain the gap. A bullet claims RHS endorsement and another prints a 25 mm minimum depth, which is a thin cosmetic layer next to Melcourt’s 50–100 mm guidance. The star line is 5.0 from 3 reviews. Two UK texts are on file: one says the chips have been used for several years as a top-dress on ceramic flower pots, and the other is only the words “mini bark chips and mulch mix”. A 5.0 from three ratings is not a deeper file than the 391-review Melcourt bag at about £19.68. Buy this listing only if that seller is the one you can get. Skip it if you wanted the printed 3–18 mm screen and the long review trail.

Pros

  • Title and volume both say 60 litres
  • Sold as Melcourt pine mini chips for pots, tubs and window boxes
  • RHS endorsement claimed on a bullet

Cons

  • 5.0 from 3 reviews, with only two short texts
  • Listed weight 10 kg against 20 kg on the Melcourt-branded 60 L bag
  • No particle size; listing prints a 25 mm minimum depth
  • About £3 more than the evidenced 60 litre Melcourt face

Best for: A single 60 litre Melcourt-named bag when this seller is the one in stock and you will judge the chips on arrival.

Less suitable: Anyone treating a 5.0 from three reviews as stronger evidence than the 391-review Melcourt bag.

Advanced Nutrition SylvaBark pine mini mulch 50 L

Rank 3

Advanced Nutrition SylvaBark pine mini mulch 50 L

∼£24

Our view

The Advanced Nutrition 50 litre listing is titled Melcourt SylvaBark pine mini mulch at about £23.50, with almost no specs: no weight, no particle size, and no weed or moisture claim beyond a listing question. The star line is 5.0 from 2 reviews. The only review text on file is about a Kindle gift, not the mulch, so those two ratings are not a comment on the chips. Title and a 50 litre field agree on volume, which is the one clean fact. This is the same Melcourt 50 litre line other sellers already list with more copy and more reviews. Treat the 5.0 as empty. Skip it unless this seller is the only one in stock and you will judge the sack when it arrives.

Pros

  • Title says 50 litres of Melcourt SylvaBark pine mini mulch
  • Volume wording in the title agrees with the 50 l field
  • Shelf price in line with other 50 litre SylvaBark faces

Cons

  • Almost no specs: no weight, no millimetre screen, no answered claims
  • 5.0 from 2 reviews, and the only review text is a Kindle gift
  • No usable UK product comment on the listing

Best for: Only if this seller is the last 50 litre SylvaBark face in stock and you will open the bag before you spread it.

Less suitable: Anyone reading a 5.0 from two reviews, including a Kindle gift, as proof of chip quality.

Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini mulch 50 L

Rank 4

Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini mulch 50 L

∼£23

Our view

The Suregreen 50 litre SylvaBark pine mini mulch is listed at about £23.35, about 47p a litre, with title and volume both at 50 litres and a listed weight of 11.5 kg. Across 169 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.7, and 46 UK texts praise very small, even chips, clean dry bags with a pine smell, and a finish on acers, roses, blueberries, pots and borders. Reviewers also mention little dust or sapwood and that the chips were easy to spread. Some stayed in place, and some mixed a little into compost for drainage. One review quotes a 3–18 mm screen and says most pieces were 5–10 mm, which this listing itself does not print. Complaints are the price once tax and delivery were added, an orange or red colour that surprised some buyers, a heavy bag, and chips that were too light for strong wind on one exposed pot. A reptile-bedding bullet and an RHS endorsement sit on the listing. Neither is a laboratory ranking of sellers. It is the top pick for a pot-and-small-bed finish when you will pay more per litre than for the 60 litre Melcourt bag.

Pros

  • 4.7 from 169 reviews, the strongest star line with a usable sample
  • 50 litres agreed, 11.5 kg, sold for smaller beds, planters and pots
  • Reviewers describe even chips, little dust, and a nursery finish
  • RHS endorsement claimed on this 50 litre face

Cons

  • About 47p a litre, dearer than the 60 litre Melcourt bag
  • Orange or red colour surprised some buyers
  • Too light for strong wind on one exposed pot
  • No millimetre range in the listing body

Best for: Pots and a small bed when you want the finer SylvaBark finish and will pay more per litre.

Less suitable: A windy rimless pot, a large border bought on pence per litre, or anyone who needs a printed millimetre line in the listing body.

Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L

Rank 5

Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L

∼£20

Our view

The Melcourt 60 litre pine mini chips bag is a 3–18 mm screened pine bark at about £19.68 on amazon.co.uk, about 33p a litre, with title and capacity both at 60 litres and a listed weight of 20 kg. Across 391 reviews the line is 4.6, and the first 50 UK reviews praise small, even chips on pots, acers, hydrangeas and hanging baskets, plus moisture hold, a pine smell, and colour that held after rain. Reviewers often say a bag goes a long way on containers and that they buy it again. The same sample calls it dearer than garden-centre bark and too small if you wanted to cover a yard. One buyer measured about 55 litres against the 60 litre pack, and a 2024 review called it shrinkflation and ordinary bark. Another said the word bark was misleading because the pieces were not chunky. It is the best value in this set when you want a printed screen and a deep review file, rather than a cheap cover for a large border.

Pros

  • Printed 3–18 mm pine screen and 60 litres that agree
  • About 33p a litre at about £19.68, the lowest single-bag price here
  • 4.6 from 391 reviews, the largest sample in the set
  • Reviewers praise even chips on pots, acers and hanging baskets

Cons

  • Dearer than some garden-centre bark, and thin for a yard
  • One measured bag was about 55 litres against a 60 litre pack
  • A 2024 review called it shrinkflation and ordinary bark

Best for: Pots, tubs and a small border when you want a named 3–18 mm pine chip and a deep amazon.co.uk review file.

Less suitable: A large cheap cover, a play surface, or anyone who wanted chunky nuggets rather than mini chips.

Is the stated volume consistent?

The title and the capacity field both say 60 litres. One review said a measured bag was about 55 litres.

Suregreen Melcourt pine mini chip 2 x 60 L

Rank 6

Suregreen Melcourt pine mini chip 2 x 60 L

∼£43

Our view

The Suregreen two-pack is titled as two 60 litre Melcourt pine mini chip bags at about £43.49, about 36p a litre if 120 litres arrive. The volume field stores 60 litres against that two-bag title, while the unit count says 2 count of 60 L each and the listed weight is 20 kg. Across 7 reviews the line is 4.1. Two UK texts are on file: one called it great quality and a bit expensive, and one said there was a lot more wood and dirt than usual and that the seller was not interested. Highlights add “impact absorbing chunky pine bark” and potting and soil drainage. There is no play standard on the listing. A 4.1 from seven ratings is a thinner and lower file than the single 60 litre Melcourt bag. Consider it when you want two bags in one order and will open them before you spread. Skip it if you wanted the 391-review single bag, or a listing without the extra wood complaint.

Pros

  • Title and unit count both describe two 60 litre bags
  • Listed weight 20 kg matches two bags better than the other two-pack
  • One review called the chips great quality

Cons

  • Volume field stores 60 L against a two-bag title
  • 4.1 from 7 reviews, with one report of extra wood and dirt
  • Impact-absorbing wording with no play standard
  • A bit expensive, even in the positive review

Best for: Two 60 litre bags in one order when you will tip them and check for wood and dirt before you spread.

Less suitable: A play surface, or anyone who wanted the single-bag 391-review file without a wood-and-dirt complaint.

Common questions

Yes. A bullet says it slowly improves the soil’s organic content as it decomposes.

Invigortex Melcourt pine mini chips 5 x 60 L

Rank 7

Invigortex Melcourt pine mini chips 5 x 60 L

∼£99

Our view

The Invigortex five-pack is titled as five 60 litre Melcourt pine mini chips bags at about £99.49. If 300 litres arrive, that is about 33p a litre, close to the single Melcourt 60 litre bag. The volume field stores 60 litres and the unit count stores 60,000 millilitres, so the listing does not agree with itself. The listed weight is 10 kg, which is not explained against five 60 litre bags. A bullet claims RHS endorsement and a 25 mm minimum depth. There is no customer-reviews line and no review text, so there is no star evidence to score. Buy a multi-pack only if you will check that five bags arrive and that the chips match a 3–18 mm pine screen. Skip it if you wanted a listing whose litres, weight and reviews already line up.

Pros

  • Title and a bullet say five 60 litre bags
  • Per litre close to the single 60 litre Melcourt bag if 300 litres arrive
  • Sold for smaller beds, pots, window boxes and roof gardens

Cons

  • Volume field stores 60 L against a five-bag title
  • Listed weight 10 kg is not explained for five bags
  • No reviews on the listing
  • 25 mm minimum depth on the listing

Best for: A patio run of pots when you will count five bags on arrival and accept no review trail.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs agreed litres, a matching weight, or any amazon.co.uk reviews.

Invigortex Melcourt pine mini chips 2 x 60 L

Rank 8

Invigortex Melcourt pine mini chips 2 x 60 L

∼£43

Our view

The Invigortex two-pack is titled as two 60 litre Melcourt pine mini chips bags at about £43.49. The unit-count field stores 1,000 millilitres, and the listed weight is 10 kg, which is not explained against two 60 litre bags. Model number and part fields say Carnivorous Plant Soil and CPSOI, which do not match the title. A bullet claims RHS endorsement and a 25 mm minimum depth. There is no customer-reviews line and no review text. The same two-bag price sits on the Suregreen two-pack, which at least has seven ratings. This listing does not agree with itself until you can see two bags of pine chips on arrival. Skip it if you wanted a clean spec row or any review trail.

Pros

  • Title and a bullet say two 60 litre bags
  • Sold as Melcourt pine mini chips for pots and small beds
  • Same price band as the Suregreen two-pack

Cons

  • Unit count stores 1,000 millilitres against a two-bag title
  • Model fields say Carnivorous Plant Soil / CPSOI
  • Listed weight 10 kg is not explained for two bags
  • No reviews on the listing

Best for: Only if this seller is the last two-bag face and you will confirm pine chips, not carnivorous-plant soil, when the parcel opens.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs agreed litres, matching model fields, or a review line.

How we compared

Eight amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the stored pages and the UK review notes already on file. Prices are the October 2026 shelf figures on those listings. There is no laboratory test. A weed line, an RHS bullet or a 25 mm depth is the seller’s claim. Where the title and the volume field disagree, both stay and the clash is a deduction. A 5.0 from two or three ratings is a thin file, and a stored display score of 100 on that file is not treated as a higher award. The top pick is the Suregreen 50 litre SylvaBark bag. The best value is the Melcourt 60 litre mini chips, the lowest price per litre among single bags whose volume agrees and whose review file is deep. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Screen and job

25%

A printed pine-bark screen, ideally 3–18 mm, and a job that matches pots or a small border. A missing millimetre line, a play-style highlight, or model fields that name another product are deductions.

2

Volume and weight

25%

Title, volume field and pack count should agree, and the listed weight should fit the number of bags. A five-bag title whose volume field still says 60 litres, or 10 kg on a multi-bag title, is a deduction.

3

Amazon evidence

25%

Star rating on amazon.co.uk, then the size of that listing’s review file. Suregreen at 4.7 from 169 and Melcourt at 4.6 from 391 carry this block. A 5.0 from two, three or seven reviews, or a file with no review line, adds little.

4

Depth claim

10%

A stated depth is compared with the RHS figure of at least 5 cm and with Melcourt’s 50–100 mm guidance. A 25 mm bullet is recorded as a thin cosmetic layer, not as weed control.

5

Value

15%

Pence per litre at the October 2026 shelf price, using the title volume only when the pack count agrees. The 60 litre Melcourt bag is about 33p a litre. The 50 litre faces are about 47p. A multi-pack is scored only if you can trust that the stated bags arrive.

Pine mulch buying guide

Match the screen, the litres and the depth before you match the star line. A 50 litre pot finish and a 60 litre mini-chip bag are not the same job. Prices below are the October 2026 amazon.co.uk shelf prices on the stored listings. This is not a laboratory test.

What to match before you buy

Pine mulch on amazon.co.uk is almost always screened pine bark sold as mini chips or mini mulch, with a nominal screen of 3–18 mm. Bagged pine needles are a different product. UK shoppers buy the chips to give pots, tubs, window boxes and small borders a tidy finish, to hold moisture, and to slow annual weeds. A suitable bag names the pine-bark screen, states a litre volume that matches the pack, and is a surface cover. It is not sold here as a fertiliser.

Best for

  • Pots, tubs and window boxes that need a small, even pine chip
  • A short border where you will lay at least 5 cm and keep chips off stems
  • Ericaceous plants already in suitable compost, as a surface mulch only

Not ideal for

  • A large bed you want to cover as cheaply as possible
  • A play area that must meet BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177
  • Anyone buying the bag to acidify chalk or to feed the plants

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Laying 25 mm and expecting weed control

Several listings print 25 mm. The RHS figure is at least 5 cm, ideally 7.5 cm. Melcourt’s pot minimum is 50 mm, with 5–10% settlement on a deeper bed.

  2. 2

    Piling chips against woody stems

The RHS leaves an 8–10 cm gap at stems. Chips against bark hold moisture in the wrong place. Lay them on soil that is already moist, and not frozen.

  3. 3

Using pot chips as play bark

Decorative mini chips are not BS EN 1177 play bark. An impact-absorbing highlight on a two-pack is not that standard. A public or school play area needs a tested surface.

What to weigh up

Screen, pack and depth

High

Buy a named pine-bark screen before you buy the star line. The useful print in this set is 3–18 mm. Melcourt pine mini chips state that range. Suttons states a 3–18 mm flake size on the 50 litre bag. The Suregreen 50 litre listing does not print millimetres, though one reviewer measured most pieces at 5–10 mm and quoted the maker’s 3–18 mm range. A missing screen is a reason to open the bag before you commit to a multi-pack. Pack agreement is the next check.

Marks, pH and who should skip it

High

Peat-free on a Melcourt bag, and on the Suttons bullets, is a contents claim. A retail peat ban was announced for 2024 and had not been enacted by the March 2026 parliamentary answer, which said legislation would come when parliamentary time allows. FSC MIX CU-COC-806457, minimum 70%, is Melcourt’s sourcing mark. It does not measure weed suppression. An RHS endorsement belongs to the named bag size, 60 litres for Pine Mini Chips and 50 litres for SylvaBark Pine Mini Mulch.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Patio and pot gardeners

You want a nursery finish on pots, tubs and a small bed, and you will pay more per litre for it. Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini mulch 50 L is the top pick at about £23.35, with 4.7 from 169 reviews. The listing claims an RHS endorsement. It does not print a millimetre screen, and one exposed pot lost chips in strong wind.

A small border on a budget

You want even chips and fewer annual weeds, and you are comparing pence per litre with mixed bark. Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L is the best value at about £19.68, about 33p a litre, with a printed 3–18 mm screen and 4.6 from 391 reviews. One measured bag was about 55 litres. It will not cover a yard.

Ericaceous plants in pots

You can top-dress acers, blueberries and rhododendrons that are already in suitable compost. The bag will not turn chalk acid. Suttons RHS Sylvabark pine mini mulch 50 L prints peat-free and 3–18 mm at about £23.50. The review file is 5.0 from 7, with one text on file, and the listing says spread at 25 mm. Use a deeper layer if you want the RHS weed depth.

Common questions about pine mulches

Which pine mulch is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is the Suregreen 50 litre SylvaBark pine mini mulch at about £23.35. amazon.co.uk shows 4.7 from 169 reviews, the strongest star line here with a sample you can read. Reviewers describe small, even chips on pots and small beds. The listing claims an RHS endorsement and does not print a millimetre screen. It is about 47p a litre, dearer than the 60 litre Melcourt bag. One exposed pot lost chips in strong wind. Choose it for that finer finish if you will pay the extra.
Which bag is the best value?
The best value is Melcourt pine mini chips, 60 litres, at about £19.68, about 33p a litre. Title and capacity both say 60 litres, the listing prints a 3–18 mm screen, and the weight is 20 kg. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 391 reviews, with praise for even chips on pots and baskets. One buyer measured about 55 litres, and a 2024 review called it shrinkflation. It suits containers and a small border. It is a thin cover for a yard.
Does pine mulch acidify the soil?
Pine bark can be acidic in the bag. Melcourt states pH 4.5–5.5 for Pine Mini Chips. The RHS says woody mulches left on the surface do not acidify the soil underneath, and they do not starve established plants of nitrogen. Do not buy pine mulch to turn chalk into soil for rhododendrons. Acers, blueberries and rhododendrons still need compost or soil that is already suitable. Pine needles, used as a leafmould, are a different material, and they rarely appear as a bagged pine mulch on amazon.co.uk.
How deep should you lay pine mulch?
The RHS says at least 5 cm, ideally 7.5 cm, on moist soil that is not frozen, with an 8–10 cm gap at woody stems. Melcourt’s guidance for its pine chips is 50–100 mm after planting, a 50 mm minimum in pots with a rim, and 5–10% settlement. Some amazon.co.uk bullets print 25 mm. That depth is a cosmetic layer. A 25 mm spread can look tidy and still leave annual weeds an easier path. Lay chips on soil that is already moist.
Is pine mulch the same as play bark?
No. Decorative mini chips are a pot and border finish. Play bark is a separate product, tested to BS EN 1177 and laid to a depth that meets BS EN 1176. A highlight that says impact-absorbing does not make a listing play-grade. For a public or school play area, use a tested surface and someone who can meet that standard. Mini chips in this set are for pots, tubs, window boxes and small borders.
Is pine mulch the same as generic bark?
In this set, pine mulch is screened pine bark, usually a 3–18 mm mini chip or a SylvaBark mini mulch. Generic bark can be coarser, mixed species, and a cheaper cover on a large bed. Pine mini chips are the tidy finish for pots and a short border. Species, screen and look are different questions from a mixed bark sack. The wider bark listings are in the bark mulch comparison.
Will a 25 mm layer slow weeds?
A 25 mm layer is the minimum some listings print. The RHS figure for an organic mulch is at least 5 cm, ideally 7.5 cm, if you want it to slow annual weeds. Melcourt’s pot minimum is 50 mm. Expect 25 mm to look neat and to do less against weeds. Spread it on moist, unfrozen soil, and keep it off woody stems. Melcourt describes white mould on these chips as normal, and the RHS notes harmless fungi under organic mulches.
Does peat-free on the bag mean peat sales are banned?
No. Melcourt bags are peat-free, and the Suttons 50 litre listing says 100% peat free with no green waste. A retail peat ban was announced for 2024. A March 2026 parliamentary answer said it had not been enacted, and that legislation would come when parliamentary time allows. Peat-free on a bag is a contents claim. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still covers a sack that is short, or mixed wood sold as pine.

Our verdict

The top pick for pots and a small bed is Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini mulch 50 L at about £23.35. amazon.co.uk shows 4.7 from 169 reviews, and the listing claims an RHS endorsement. It does not print a millimetre screen, and it costs about 47p a litre. The best value is Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L at about £19.68, about 33p a litre, with a printed 3–18 mm screen and 4.6 from 391 reviews. Suttons prints peat-free and 3–18 mm on a 50 litre bag, with a thin review file and a 25 mm spread line. The multi-packs only pay off if the stated number of bags arrives and the volume field matches the title. None of these scores is a laboratory test.
