How to apply pine bark mulch: depth, stem gap and bags

Updated: October 2026

An amazon bullet said 25 mm would do. Laid like that, pine chips sit on weeds and blow off in a week. How to apply pine bark mulch, for a UK border, is a short method: clear the weeds, plant first, wet the soil if it is dry, spread 50–75 mm, and keep an 8–10 cm gap at woody stems. The bags are in the [pine mulch comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/pine-mulch). These notes follow Royal Horticultural Society mulch guidance and Melcourt’s pine how-to. We did not lay these sacks in a trial.

How deep

Suttons and some Invigortex listings print 25 mm. Melcourt’s how-to for Pine Mini Chips is 50–100 mm after planting, plus 5–10% for settlement, and 50 mm minimum in a pot with a rim. The RHS says at least 5 cm, ideally 7.5 cm, on moist unfrozen soil. Treat 25 mm as a top-up, not a weed layer. A 50–75 mm layer meets both. Keep an 8–10 cm gap at woody stems. Soft crowns need a gap too. One bag on a long edge should go deep on the front, not as a film everywhere. Pots and wind are pine mulch for pots.

When and in what order

Late winter to early spring, and autumn, on moist soil that is not frozen. Mulch on dust sits on a crust. Mulch on a waterlogged bed traps a wet layer. Weed, plant, water if the surface is dry, then spread. Do not hoe the layer later. Couch, bindweed and dandelions grow through 50 mm. Annual seedlings are what that depth slows. Melcourt says no geotextile is required under Pine Mini Chips. Open a dry sack with gloves in a ventilated space. White threads are saprotrophs Melcourt and the RHS treat as normal. A short or dirty bag is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 question.

How many bags

One square metre at 50 mm takes 50 litres. At 75 mm it takes 75 litres. A 60 litre bag is about 1.2 square metres at 50 mm before settlement. Add 5–10% because the chips slump. A 10 square metre border at 50 mm needs about 500 litres, about nine 60 litre bags, or about ten with settlement. At 75 mm, about thirteen bags plus a spare. A 50 litre bag covers about 1 square metre at 50 mm. Read the litre claim first in the pine mulch buying guide. One 60 litre bag will not finish 10 square metres of border, and it will dress several pots.

Aftercare and false alarms

Do not hoe. Top up after the first winter and keep the stem gap open. Water through the chips. They are a lid, not a dam. White mould is normal on these chips, according to Melcourt, and the RHS notes harmless saprotrophs under organic mulches. A sour mass, or honey fungus after a woodchip dump, is a different problem. A surface mulch does not rob established plants of nitrogen. Digging fresh chips in can. Decorative mini chips are not BS EN 1177 play bark. Call a professional for a school play area, a BS EN 12580 contract, suspected honey fungus, or a steep bank.

Common questions

How deep should pine bark be?
Use 50–75 mm on a bed, which sits inside Melcourt’s 50–100 mm and the RHS 5–7.5 cm. Keep 8–10 cm off woody stems. A 25 mm amazon bullet is a top-up, not a weed layer. Pots want about 50 mm and a rim.
How many 60 L bags for 10 m²?
About nine bags at 50 mm before settlement, or about ten if you add 10%. At 75 mm you want about thirteen bags plus a spare. A 60 litre sack is about 1.2 square metres at 50 mm. Measure the bed. Do not guess from one photograph.
When should I mulch in the UK?
Late winter to early spring, and autumn, on moist unfrozen soil. Weed and plant first. Water if the surface is dry. Avoid frozen ground and a dust-dry crust. A second light top-up after the first winter is normal because chips settle 5–10%.
Do I need a membrane?
Melcourt says no geotextile is required under Pine Mini Chips. A membrane is a separate choice, often copied from mixed-bark brands. It will not fix a 25 mm layer. Perennial weeds still need digging out before you spread.
Why is there white mould in the bag?
Melcourt treats white mould as normal on these chips. The RHS describes harmless saprotrophs under organic mulches. Loosen the chips and use them. Plastic, glass, or a short bag is a different complaint.
Will bark steal nitrogen if I leave it on the surface?
Not on the evidence the RHS gives for woody mulch left on top. Lock-up is the risk when you dig fresh chips in. Leave pine mini chips as a surface. Do not add a bark tax of fertiliser unless the plants already needed a feed.
How close can it sit to a tree trunk?
Leave about 8–10 cm. The RHS how-to uses 10 cm. A mulch volcano against the bark hides the flare and holds wet chips on the stem. Soft crowns also need a gap. Fill the middle of the bed, not the trunk.
