Pine bark mulch comparison 2026

The best pine bark mulches, compared.

Top pick: Suttons Sylvabark pine mini 50 L Best value: Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L – Lowest shelf price in this set, about £19.68, with a stated 3–18 mm chip and 4.6 from 391 reviews. Updated October 2026.

Pine bark mulch is screened bark you spread on moist, weed-free soil or on the compost in a pot. In the UK you buy it for borders, beds and containers, so weeds are slower and the soil stays moist. It is not a compost, not a fertiliser, and not a play surface. Play-grade bark needs a BS EN 1177 certificate that names that product and that depth. A suitable bag shows a grade, a volume in litres, and a listed weight that fits that volume. Pots and small borders need a fine chip, about 3–18 mm. A larger bed that should look chunky needs nuggets, about 15–65 mm. A mini-chip title with a much wider size is mixing grades. Lay it on the surface. The RHS asks for at least 5 cm of organic mulch, ideally about 7.5 cm, and about 8–10 cm clear of trunks. A listing that says 25 mm is below that. Depth and the stem gap are in the [how to lay pine bark mulch](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/pine-bark-mulch/sub/pine-bark-mulch-how-to-lay) guide.

The best pine bark mulches in detail

Suttons Sylvabark pine mini 50 L

Rank 1

Suttons Sylvabark pine mini 50 L

∼£24

Our view

Suttons RHS Sylvabark pine mini mulch, one 50 litre bag, is about £23.50. Bullets say rich brown screened bark, weed suppression, moisture retention, 100% peat-free, no green waste, flake size 3–18 mm, and spread at 25 mm. Stars are 5.0 from 7. One UK review is in the file. No item weight is stored. The page score is 8.7, below both awards, because a 5.0 from seven reviews does not outrank 4.6 from 391. It suits a 50 litre fine chip if you accept that review count. It is a poor fit if you need a weighed bag or a deeper mulch instruction.

Pros

  • Flake size 3–18 mm is stated
  • Peat-free and no green waste are stated
  • The one review likes the fine look on flower beds

Cons

  • Only one review body in the captured file
  • Spread depth on the listing is 25 mm
  • No listed weight
  • About £23.50 for 50 litres

Best for: A 50 litre fine chip for pots and borders if you accept a review count of 7.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a weighed bag or a deep mulch instruction on the listing.

Invigortex Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L

∼£23

Our view

Bullets name beds, borders, tubs, pots, window boxes and roof gardens, a minimum depth of 25 mm, and RHS endorsed. Listed weight is 10 kg, which is light for 60 litres against the maker's about 18–19 kg. No particle size is stated. Stars are 5.0 from 3, with two UK review bodies. The page score is 8.5. A 5.0 from three reviews does not outrank 4.6 from 391. Open the bag and check the weight.

Pros

  • Title and capacity agree on 60 litres
  • RHS endorsed is stated on a bullet

Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini 50 L

Rank 3

Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini 50 L

∼£23

Our view

Suregreen Melcourt SylvaBark pine bark mini mulch, 50 litres, is about £23.35, with 4.7 from 169 reviews. The title says SylvaBark. One bullet says SylvaGrow. Brand and manufacturer say Suregreen. Listed weight is 11.5 kg. The listing claims RHS endorsement and says the mini mulch is used as reptile bedding. No particle size is printed. Two dimension blocks disagree. It is the top pick for pots and small beds because it has the highest stars among the bags with more than 50 reviews. It is a poor fit for chunky nuggets, or for a reptile setup bought from a garden bag on the strength of one bullet.

Pros

  • Buyers praise a small, dry, clean chip for pots and blueberries
  • 4.7 from 169 reviews
  • Title, size and capacity agree on 50 litres

  • One report of chips blowing off a windy patio pot
  • One bullet says SylvaGrow while the title says SylvaBark

Best for: Pots and small beds if you want the 50 litre mini-mulch name and a solid review count.

Less suitable: A chunky nugget bed, or a reptile setup bought from a garden bag on the strength of one bullet.

Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L

Rank 4

Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L

∼£20

Our view

Melcourt Pine Mini Chips, 60 litres, is about £19.68. The bullets say screened pine bark at 3–18 mm for pots, tubs and borders, with weed and moisture claims. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 391 reviews, the largest file in this set. Listed weight is 20 kg. Material Type says Pine Wood. Two dimension blocks do not match. One of 50 reviews said a measured fill was about 55 litres. It is the best value if you want a printed 3–18 mm chip and that review sample. It is a poor fit if you want chunky nuggets, or a play-surface certificate.

Pros

  • Small even chips praised for pots, acers, hostas and borders
  • Buyers report dry bags and a pine smell
  • Lowest shelf price in this set at about £19.68
  • 4.6 from 391 reviews

Cons

  • Several buyers call the bag dear
  • One measured fill of about 55 litres
  • One 2024 review said quality had dropped
  • Material Type says Pine Wood, not bark

Best for: Pots and small borders where you want a 3–18 mm chip and a large review sample.

Less suitable: A buyer who wants chunky nuggets, or who needs a play-surface certificate.

Suregreen large bark nuggets 60 L

Rank 5

Suregreen large bark nuggets 60 L

∼£20

Our view

Suregreen Melcourt large bark nuggets, 60 litres in the title, are about £19.84, with 4.1 from 47 reviews. The bullet says chunky pine bark at 15–65 mm. A separate bullet says Melcourt PlayBark is RHS endorsed. There is no BS EN 1177 line. Listed weight is 15 kg and dimensions are 50 × 50 × 90 cm. Reviews include chunky cover around roses, and bags with dust or wood lumps. Melcourt's nugget page includes Douglas fir and larch, so this is not a 100% pine claim. It suits a larger ornamental bed if you check the bag for dust. It is a poor fit for small pots or a play area.

Pros

  • Buyers who wanted chunky pieces often liked the size
  • Used around roses and bulbs
  • Shelf price about £19.84 for a stated 60 litres

Cons

  • Dust, shreds and wood lumps in more than one review
  • One review says the bag is not all pine
  • RHS sentence names PlayBark, not this nugget title
  • 4.1 from 47 reviews

Best for: A larger ornamental bed where you want 15–65 mm pieces and you will check the bag for dust.

Less suitable: Small pots, or a play area that needs a BS EN 1177 certificate.

Hortus Planta pine mini chips 60 L

Rank 6

Hortus Planta pine mini chips 60 L

∼£25

Our view

The Hortus Planta listing of Melcourt bark pine mini chips, 60 litres, is about £24.95. Bullets say it reduces weeds, conserves moisture, and is endorsed by the FSC and the RHS, without a certificate number. Approximate chip size is 5–35 mm, which is wider than a 3–18 mm mini chip and matches the ornamental-bark grade on the maker's page. Listed weight is 1.5 kg, which is not credible for 60 litres. There is no Customer Reviews line and no review text, so the amazon rating is 0 and the page score is 1.0. Buy it only if you can inspect the bag.

Pros

  • Title and volume agree on 60 litres
  • Weed and moisture claims are on the bullets

Cons

  • Chip size 5–35 mm on a mini-chips title
  • Listed weight 1.5 kg
  • No reviews in the captured file
  • Highest shelf price in this set at about £24.95

Best for: Only if you can inspect the bag. The listing does not show a review sample.

How we compared

Six amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the stored pages and the review notes already on file. Shelf prices are those captured figures, not a live re-price. There is no laboratory test and no garden trial. A weed line, an RHS line or a depth is the seller's claim unless a maker page names that pack. Where two figures on one listing disagree, both stay and the clash is a deduction. The card score starts from the star line out of 10, so 4.7 stars is 9.4. A 5.0 from seven reviews is shown at 8.7, and a 5.0 from three reviews at 8.5, so both sit below the awards. A 5.0 from three or seven reviews does not outrank 4.6 from 391. The nuggets stay at 8.2, from 4.1 stars. The listing with no review line is 1.0. The top pick is the highest score among bags with more than 50 reviews. The best value is the lowest shelf price in the set, which also has the largest review file. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Grade and chip size

30%

Pots and small borders need a stated 3–18 mm mini chip. A larger ornamental bed needs 15–65 mm nuggets. A mini-chips title that prints 5–35 mm, or a bullet with no millimetre range, is a deduction. Ornamental bark at 5–35 mm is a different grade.

2

Volume and listed weight

25%

The title and the capacity should agree on 50 or 60 litres. Melcourt's own weights are about 18–19 kg for 60 litre mini chips, about 11–12 kg for 50 litre SylvaBark, and about 16–17 kg for 60 litre nuggets. A listed 20 kg, 15 kg or 11.5 kg can stand. A listed 10 kg or 1.5 kg on a 60 litre title cannot.

3

Amazon evidence

25%

Star rating on amazon.co.uk, then the size of that review file. 4.7 from 169 and 4.6 from 391 carry this block. A 5.0 from seven or three reviews, and a listing with no Customer Reviews line, do not outrank those files.

4

Price and attached claims

20%

Lowest shelf price in the capture ranks higher on value. An RHS or FSC line scores only when it is tied to the named pack, not to PlayBark or a loose adjective. A stated depth of 25 mm is a deduction against Melcourt's 50–100 mm and the RHS guide.

Pine bark mulch buying guide

Buy the grade before you buy the star line. A 3–18 mm mini chip, a 15–65 mm nugget and a 5–35 mm ornamental mix are not one product. Prices below are the captured amazon.co.uk shelf prices. This is not a laboratory test.

What to match before you buy

Pine bark mulch is a bag of screened bark for the surface of a border, a bed or a pot. It is not a compost, not a fertiliser, and not play-grade surfacing. A BS EN 1177 certificate has to name the product and the depth before a bag is play bark. None of the six listings here prints that line. BS 4790:1987, cited by Melcourt for a fire test on the nugget page, is not that certificate. Match the grade to the job before you match the star line.

Best for

  • Pots and window boxes that need a fine chip and a rim that holds it
  • A small border where you want 3–18 mm written on the listing
  • A larger bed that should look chunky at 15–65 mm

Not ideal for

  • A swing, a school yard or any surface that needs BS EN 1177
  • A buyer who treats a 5.0 from three reviews as a larger file
  • Someone who will dig the bark into the soil

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Spreading a 25 mm layer

Some listings say 25 mm. Melcourt says 50–100 mm, and the RHS says at least 5 cm, ideally 7.5 cm. A thinner layer is not the depth those guides ask for.

  2. 2

Reading PlayBark as a play certificate

A bullet that names Melcourt PlayBark is a different product. None of these listings prints BS EN 1177. BS 4790:1987 is a fire-test citation, not play surfacing.

  3. 3

    Digging the bark in

Leave it on the surface, clear of the trunk. The RHS says buried wood can lock nitrogen, and that surface woody mulch does little to nitrogen for established shrubs.

What to weigh up

Grade, litres and listed weight

High

The grade is the decision. A 3–18 mm chip is for pots, window boxes and small borders. A 15–65 mm nugget is for a larger bed, and Melcourt's constituents line includes Douglas fir and larch, with a stated life of 4+ years if left alone, against 2+ years for mini chips. A 5–35 mm line on a mini-chips title is the ornamental mix, not the mini chip. Litres and weight come next. Kept bags say 50 or 60 litres.

Depth, claims and what the stars cannot do

High

Lay bark on moist, weed-free soil. Melcourt says 50–100 mm, plus 5–10% for settlement, and at least 50 mm in a pot with a rim that holds loose chips. The RHS says at least 5 cm and ideally 7.5 cm, about 8–12 cm for coarser chips, and about 8–10 cm clear of trunks. A listing depth of 25 mm is below both. A 60 litre bag covers 1.2 m² at 50 mm and 0.6 m² at 100 mm. That is arithmetic, not a trial. Do not dig the bark in. RHS and FSC claims count when they name the pack.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Pots and window boxes

You want a small chip that stays in a pot with a decent rim. Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini 50 L is the top pick at about £23.35, with 4.7 from 169 reviews. The listing does not print a millimetre size. One buyer said chips blew off a windy patio pot. Listed weight is 11.5 kg.

A neat small border

You want the chip size in writing and a large review file. Melcourt pine mini chips 60 L are the best value at about £19.68, with 4.6 from 391 reviews. The bullets say 3–18 mm. Listed weight is 20 kg. Material Type says Pine Wood, and one measured fill was about 55 litres.

A chunky ornamental bed

You want larger pieces around roses or shrubs, not a fine chip in a pot. Suregreen large bark nuggets 60 L are about £19.84, with 4.1 from 47 reviews. The bullet says 15–65 mm. Reviews mention dust and wood lumps. The bag is not certified play bark, and Melcourt's nuggets are not 100% pine.

Common questions about pine bark mulches

Which pine bark mulch is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini mulch, 50 litres, at about £23.35. Among the bags with more than 50 reviews it has the highest stars on amazon.co.uk, 4.7 from 169. The title and the capacity agree on 50 litres, and the listed weight is 11.5 kg. No millimetre chip size is printed. One bullet says SylvaGrow while the title says SylvaBark. It suits pots and small beds. Skip it if you need a printed 3–18 mm size, or chunky nuggets.
Which pine bark mulch is the best value?
The best value is Melcourt pine mini chips, 60 litres, at about £19.68. That is the lowest shelf price in this set, and amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 391 reviews, the largest file here. The bullets state a nominal particle size of 3–18 mm for pots, tubs and borders, and they claim weed suppression and moisture retention. Listed weight is 20 kg. Material Type says Pine Wood, not bark. One measured fill was about 55 litres.
What is the difference between mini chips and nuggets?
Mini chips at a nominal 3–18 mm suit pots, window boxes and small borders. Nuggets at 15–65 mm suit a larger bed that should look chunky. Melcourt's nugget page lists pine with Douglas fir and larch, and a stated life of 4+ years if left alone, against 2+ years for mini chips. A mini-chips title that prints 5–35 mm is a different grade. Nuggets are a poor fit in a small pot.
How deep should you lay pine bark mulch?
Spread pine bark mulch on moist soil once perennial weeds are out, and do not dig it in. Melcourt says 50–100 mm, plus 5–10% for settlement, and at least 50 mm in a pot with a rim that holds the chips. The RHS says at least 5 cm, ideally 7.5 cm, and about 8–10 cm clear of trunks. Coarser chips want about 8–12 cm. A 60 litre bag covers 1.2 m² at 50 mm. That figure is arithmetic, not a trial.
Is 25 mm deep enough?
No. Some amazon.co.uk bullets say spread at 25 mm, also written as 1 inch. That is below Melcourt's 50–100 mm and below the RHS figure of at least 5 cm, ideally 7.5 cm. A thinner layer is what those listings print. It is not the depth either guide asks for. Keep the bark off the trunk. Do not dig it in, because the RHS says buried wood can lock nitrogen.
Is this pine bark mulch safe under a swing?
No bag in this comparison is certified play bark. BS EN 1177 is the playground surface standard, and the certificate has to name the product and the depth. None of the six listings prints an EN 1177 line. A bullet that says Melcourt PlayBark is RHS endorsed is naming a different product. BS 4790:1987 is a fire-test citation on the nugget page, not a play certificate. A swing, a school yard or a public play area needs a specialist specification.
Does pine bark mulch feed the plants or replace peat compost?
Pine bark mulch is not a fertiliser and it does not replace ericaceous compost. Melcourt's Pine Mini Chips page gives a bark pH of 4.5–5.5. That describes the bark, not a plant food. The RHS says woody mulch on the surface does little to nitrogen for established shrubs. These bags are bark, not peat. England's 2022 announcement of an amateur peat ban had not become law on the September 2024 Defra answer. Other barks are in the bark mulch comparison.

Our verdict

The top pick for pots and small beds is Suregreen SylvaBark pine mini mulch, 50 litres, at about £23.35. It has the highest stars among the bags with more than 50 reviews, 4.7 from 169, and the title agrees on 50 litres. No chip size is printed, and one bullet says SylvaGrow. The best value is Melcourt pine mini chips, 60 litres, at about £19.68, with a stated 3–18 mm chip and 4.6 from 391 reviews. The nuggets at about £19.84 are the chunky 15–65 mm bag, with dust in some reviews and no BS EN 1177 line. A 5.0 from three or seven reviews does not outrank those larger files. None of these scores is a laboratory test.
