Rhododendron compost comparison 2026

The best rhododendron composts, compared.

Top pick: SIC Ericaceous 50 L Best value: Not awarded – The display badges and the digest name a top pick and do not name a best value. A low price per title litre is not a badge when the litre fields disagree. Updated October 2026.

Rhododendron compost is an ericaceous potting mix for acid-loving shrubs in a UK garden. You buy it for rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers and often blueberries, in a pot, a raised bed or a border that is already acid. The Royal Horticultural Society puts a suitable root zone at about pH 5.0 to 6.0, moist and well drained. One bag does not turn chalk or other alkaline ground into that soil. Near pH 7 you need a container, or a bed isolated by about 30 cm, and rainwater. A suitable bag names those plants. Call it peat-free only when the listing says so. The title litres should match the volume field. A printed pH is a number, not the words low pH. Nutrients last only for the stated window, then the plant needs an ericaceous feed. Open the bag outdoors and do not store it in a greenhouse. How to read the listing is set out in the [rhododendron compost buying guide](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/rhododendron-compost/sub/rhododendron-compost-buying-guide).

The best rhododendron composts in detail

SIC Ericaceous 50 L

Rank 1

SIC Ericaceous 50 L

∼£12

Our view

SIC Ericaceous 50 L is the amazon.co.uk listing B0BHWBVK99 at about £12.49, with 4.7 from 445 reviews. The title says 50 L and the volume field says 60 L. The listing states peat-free and prints pH 4.0. A loam base is claimed. No feed window is stated. The item weight is 10 kg, and the country of origin is the United Kingdom. Saved reviews mention repeat use for azaleas, blueberries and a magnolia, and a texture without clumps. Buyers call the 50 L bags heavy. The display score is 92. The litre clash keeps the badge off, even with a stated pH and a peat-free line. A home pH comment in a review is not a laboratory test.

Pros

  • Used or bought again for azaleas, blueberries and a magnolia
  • Texture without clumps; one buyer said the volume looked fairly accurate
  • One home pH check was described as fairly acidic
  • Doorstep delivery valued by buyers who struggle to lift bags

Cons

  • 50 L bags called heavy; a disabled buyer wanted smaller bags
  • Compost very dry on arrival in at least one review
  • Several reviews written before the buyer had used the bag

Best for: A buyer who wants a stated peat-free line and a printed pH 4.0, and who accepts a 50 L title against a 60 L volume field.

Less suitable: Multi-purpose planting, a chalk border you hoped one bag would convert, or a buyer who needs the title litres to match the volume field.

Common questions

Does this listing say the compost is peat-free?

Yes. The saved listing states peat-free. That is a line on this page, not a certificate, and it does not make the 50 L title match the 60 L volume field. The listing also prints pH 4.0.

Do the litre figures on this listing agree?

The title size is 50 L and the volume field is 60 L. The item weight is 10 kg. The pack fields do not agree. About £0.25 per title litre uses the 50 L title. One buyer said the volume looked fairly accurate. That is a review, not a measured fill.

What do the saved UK reviews repeat?

Across 50 saved UK review bodies, and a star line of 4.7 from 445 reviews, buyers report using it again for azaleas, blueberries and a magnolia. The texture is described as free of clumps. The 50 L bags are called heavy, and at least one review says the compost arrived very dry. Several reviews were written before use.

Green Haven Ericaceous 50 L

Rank 2

Green Haven Ericaceous 50 L

∼£12

Our view

Green Haven Ericaceous 50 L is the amazon.co.uk listing B09ZFFPXZQ at about £12.49, with 4.6 from 1,053 reviews. The title says 50 L and the volume field says 60 L, so the pack fields do not agree. The brand field is not stated. The manufacturer is Green Haven. Peat wording and pH are not stated. A slow-release iron feed is claimed. Saved reviews describe greenhouse blueberries flourishing, with an even, clean texture, and one repot of Japanese maples and a thuja with no insects, mould or debris. A one-word review calls it heavy. The display score is 94, the highest star-and-review sum here. It has no badge because the litre fields disagree. A badge needs a match and at least 50 reviews. It is not a grow trial.

Pros

  • Greenhouse blueberries described as flourishing, with an even, clean texture
  • One repot of Japanese maples and a thuja reported no insects, mould or debris
  • Azalea and blueberry buyers mention a good price and no clumps
  • Fast delivery repeated

Cons

  • Called heavy in a one-word review
  • Buyers who had not used the bag yet and were waiting on the season
  • At least one purchase was for a clematis rather than a rhododendron

Best for: Acid-loving plants named on this listing, in a pot or a bed, if the 50 L title against a 60 L volume field is acceptable to you.

Less suitable: Multi-purpose planting, a chalk border you hoped one bag would convert, or a buyer who needs the title litres to match the volume field.

Common questions

Does this listing say the compost is peat-free?

The saved listing does not say peat-free. If the bag does not say peat-free, do not treat it as peat-free. A slow-release iron claim is not a peat claim and not a printed pH.

Do the litre figures on this listing agree?

The title size is 50 L and the volume field is 60 L. The item line also gives 60 x 50 x 15 cm and 11.6 kg. The pack fields do not agree. About £0.25 per title litre uses the 50 L title, not the 60 L field.

What do the saved UK reviews repeat?

Across 50 saved UK review bodies, and a star line of 4.6 from 1,053 reviews, greenhouse blueberries are described as flourishing, with an even, clean texture. One repot of Japanese maples and a thuja reported no insects, mould or debris. A one-word review calls it heavy. Some buyers had not used the bag yet.

Laeto Ericaceous 50 L

Rank 3

Laeto Ericaceous 50 L

∼£14

Our view

Laeto Ericaceous 50 L is the amazon.co.uk listing B0BX4G5MK1 at about £13.79, with 4.6 from 656 reviews. The title says 50 L and the volume field says 20 L. Peat wording, pH and a feed window are not stated. The item weight is 6 kg. Saved reviews repeat quality and fast delivery. A repeat buyer used it for hydrangeas and called the bags manageable. One review calls it slightly more expensive than other brands. The saved review text overlaps the 20 L Laeto listing, so do not treat the two ASINs as independent samples. The display score is 92, from stars and review count only. The litre clash keeps the badge off. It is not a grow trial.

Pros

  • Quality and fast delivery repeated across the saved reviews
  • A repeat buyer used it for hydrangeas and called the bags manageable
  • Four bags used in three large pots for ericaceous plants, described as looking great
  • One buyer said it absorbs water so daily watering was not needed

Cons

  • Called slightly more expensive than other brands
  • Four bags dumped at the front door
  • A delivery delay in one review
  • Bags arrived completely dry, which surprised a buyer used to garden-centre stock

Best for: Acid-loving plants named on this listing, in a pot or a bed, if a 50 L title against a 20 L volume field is acceptable to you.

Less suitable: Multi-purpose planting, a chalk border you hoped one bag would convert, or a buyer who needs the title litres to match the volume field.

Growmoor Ericaceous 40 L

Rank 5

Growmoor Ericaceous 40 L

∼£11

Our view

Growmoor Ericaceous 40 L is the amazon.co.uk listing B094YJWWFY at about £11.39, with 4.6 from 439 reviews. The title and the volume field both say 40 L, and the pack fields agree. Peat wording is not stated, and no pH is printed. No feed window is stated. The item weight is 7.1 kg. Saved UK reviews describe camellias growing well, with a clean texture and no odd debris, and buyers name azaleas, rhododendrons, heathers and conifers. One review calls the mix dry sand with no substance, and says the plants did not grow well. Another ericaceous Growmoor purchase had fungus or mushroom spores. The display score is 90, from stars and review count only. Green Haven scores 94 on that sum, and its litres do not match, so the sources badge this 40 L bag instead. It is not a measured pH test and not a season-long grow trial.

Pros

  • Camellias described as growing well, with a clean texture and no odd debris
  • Named for azaleas, rhododendrons, heathers and conifers
  • Door delivery valued, including by a buyer with back problems
  • Several reviews call the price good value

Cons

  • One review: mix like dry sand, no substance, plants did not grow well
  • Another ericaceous Growmoor purchase had fungus or mushroom spores
  • One older review found it dearer than a garden centre
  • Bag split inside the delivery box, contents held by the box

Best for: A pot or a 30 cm isolated bed for acid-loving shrubs, when you want the title litres to match the volume field.

Less suitable: A chalk border you hoped one bag would convert, or a use that needs a peat-free statement this listing does not give.

Common questions

Does this listing say the compost is peat-free?

The saved listing does not say peat-free. If the bag does not say peat-free, do not treat it as peat-free. Organic would not be that claim either, and this page does not add a pH the listing does not print.

Do the litre figures on this listing agree?

The title size is 40 L and the volume field is 40 L. The item weight is 7.1 kg. The pack fields agree. Price per title litre is about £0.28 at about £11.39. That figure uses the title size, not a weighed fill.

What do the saved UK reviews repeat?

Across 47 saved UK review bodies, and a star line of 4.6 from 439 reviews, camellias are described as growing well, with a clean texture and no odd debris. Buyers name azaleas, rhododendrons, heathers and conifers. One review calls the mix dry sand and says the plants did not grow well. Another ericaceous Growmoor purchase had fungus or mushroom spores.

TerraGrade Ericaceous 50 L

Rank 6

TerraGrade Ericaceous 50 L

∼£10

Our view

TerraGrade Ericaceous 50 L is the amazon.co.uk listing B0GS3FTL9Z at about £9.99, with 4.6 from 100 reviews. The brand field reads ecoblaze. The title says 50 L and the volume field says 44 L, about £0.20 per title litre, the lowest large-bag figure in this set. Peat wording is not stated. The pH line says low pH and gives no number. No feed window is stated. The item weight is 14.9 kg. Saved reviews describe blueberries and a camellia perking up. One buyer found a hole in the bag, weighed about 12 kg and doubted the 44 litre line. The display score is 84. The litre clash means no badge, and the sources do not call it best value. It is not a grow trial.

Pros

  • Blueberry bushes and a camellia described as perking up or thriving, including in a hot summer
  • Texture called good quality soil with no nasty bits
  • Repeat purchase and comments that plant growth improved
  • Price called competitive or good for the bag

Cons

  • Hole in the bag and a buyer who weighed about 12 kg and doubted the 44 litre line
  • Bag split in three places, though that buyer thought the compost was still there
  • Some buyers had only just filled pots and could not judge growth yet

Best for: Acid-loving plants named on this listing if you accept a 50 L title against a 44 L volume field and no printed pH number.

Low pH without a number is not a peat-free claim and not a pH you can quote.

Do the litre figures on this listing agree?

The title size is 50 L and the volume field is 44 L. The item weight is 14.9 kg. The pack fields do not agree. About £0.20 per title litre uses the 50 L title. One buyer weighed about 12 kg and doubted the 44 litre line.

What do the saved UK reviews repeat?

Across 39 saved UK review bodies, and a star line of 4.6 from 100 reviews, blueberries and a camellia are described as perking up, including in a hot summer. The texture is called good quality soil. Complaints include a hole in the bag, a split bag, and buyers who had only just filled pots.

Indigo Ericaceous 46 L

Indigo Ericaceous 46 L

∼£15

Our view

Indigo Ericaceous 46 L is the amazon.co.uk listing B0D73KTR7N at about £14.99, with 4.6 from 3 reviews. The title says 46 L and the volume field says 50 L, about £0.33 per title litre. Peat wording and pH are not stated. A six-month slow-release feed is claimed. The item weight is not stated. One saved review calls it well worth the money, and another calls it very good stuff. With three ratings there is no repeated complaint in the file. The display score is 68. Fewer than 50 reviews, and the litre fields disagree, so there is no badge. Prefer a large review file over a 4.6 from three ratings. It is not a grow trial.

Pros

  • Called well worth the money
  • Called very good stuff

Cons

  • The only saved review does not describe a fault
  • Three ratings, so no repeat complaint is visible in the file
  • No comment on the 46 L title versus the 50 L volume field

Best for: Only if you accept a 46 L title against a 50 L volume field and a feed claim backed by three ratings.

The six-month slow-release feed line is a listing claim, not a peat claim and not a printed pH.

Do the litre figures on this listing agree?

The title size is 46 L and the volume field is 50 L. The item weight is not stated. The pack fields do not agree. About £0.33 per title litre uses the 46 L title. The saved reviews do not discuss that clash.

What do the saved UK reviews repeat?

One saved UK review body, against a star line of 4.6 from 3 reviews, calls it well worth the money and very good stuff. That review does not describe a fault. Three ratings are too few for a repeated complaint, and they do not check the 46 L title against the 50 L volume field.

UK GROW Ericaceous 1 L

Rank 8

UK GROW Ericaceous 1 L

Our view

UK GROW Ericaceous 1 L is the amazon.co.uk listing B0BR8MTYQZ at about £7.99, with 4.0 from 63 reviews. The title and the volume field both say 1 L, so those two fields agree, at about £7.99 per title litre. The title says peat-free and a bullet still names peat in the mix. The stated pH is between 4 and 5. Slow-release iron is claimed, and added perlite is stated. The item weight is 290 g. Saved reviews call it the right product for azaleas and camellias, and expensive for the amount. The digest describes the 1 L and 2 L tubs as top-ups and names only the Growmoor 40 L bag for the badge. The display score is 73. It is not a grow trial.

Pros

  • Called the right product for azaleas and camellias
  • A blueberry was potted on arrival in sound condition
  • Sealed bucket praised by one buyer whose seedlings were thriving

Cons

  • Expensive for the amount, and cheaper elsewhere
  • Less compost than expected; one review mentions only enough for a single pot
  • Arrived as an unlabelled black bucket with no instructions

Best for: A small top-up where 1 L is enough, if you can accept a peat-free title that still names peat in a bullet.

Less suitable: Filling a rhododendron pot, or a use that needs a peat-free statement the listing does not give cleanly.

Common questions

Does this listing say the compost is peat-free?

The title says peat-free and a bullet still names peat in the mix. Do not treat that conflict as a clean peat-free claim. The listing does print a pH between 4 and 5, and it claims slow-release iron.

Do the litre figures on this listing agree?

The title size is 1 L and the volume field is 1 L. The item weight is 290 g. Those litre fields agree. About £7.99 per title litre is several pounds, which is why the tub is a poor way to fill a shrub pot. One review says there was less compost than expected.

What do the saved UK reviews repeat?

Across 9 saved UK review bodies, and a star line of 4.0 from 63 reviews, buyers call it the right product for azaleas and camellias. A blueberry was potted on arrival in sound condition. Complaints are the price for the amount, less compost than expected, and an unlabelled black bucket with no instructions.

UK GROW Ericaceous 2 L

Rank 9

UK GROW Ericaceous 2 L

Our view

UK GROW Ericaceous 2 L is the amazon.co.uk listing B0BR8KM1CQ at about £8.99, with 3.7 from 24 reviews. The title and the volume field both say 2 L, about £4.50 per title litre. The title says peat-free and a bullet still names peat. The stated pH is between 4 and 5. Slow-release iron and added perlite are stated. The item weight is 330 g. One buyer called it very good and used it for a new tree described as growing healthily. Another said the 2 L purchase was not even half a litre, and one buyer said the plant died, with no cause given. Only three review bodies were saved, two of them negative. The display score is 65. Twenty-four reviews are under the 50-review line, so there is no badge. It is not a grow trial.

Pros

  • One buyer called it very good
  • Used to plant a new tree that was described as growing healthily

Cons

  • The 2 L purchase was said to be not even half a litre
  • One buyer said the plant died anyway, with no cause given
  • Only three saved review bodies, two of them negative

Best for: A tiny top-up if 2 L is really all you need and you accept the peat-wording conflict.

Less suitable: A chalk border you hoped one tub would convert, or a use that needs a peat-free statement this listing does not give cleanly.

Does this listing say the compost is peat-free?

The title says peat-free and a bullet still names peat in the mix. Do not treat that conflict as a clean peat-free claim. The listing prints a pH between 4 and 5 and claims slow-release iron. Added perlite is stated.

Do the litre figures on this listing agree?

What do the saved UK reviews repeat?

Three saved UK review bodies, against a star line of 3.7 from 24 reviews, are a thin file. One buyer called it very good and described a new tree growing healthily. Another said the tub was not even half a litre. One buyer said the plant died, with no cause given. Two of the three saved bodies are negative.

How we compared

Nine amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the saved pages dated 19 October 2026. This is not a grow trial and not an RHS test. The score is the star rating divided by five, multiplied by 70, rounded, plus the review count as log10 times 10, capped at 30. A badge needs at least 50 reviews and a volume field that matches the title litres. The display badge, and the digest, name only Growmoor Ericaceous 40 L. No best value is named. The 1 L tub also shows agreeing litres and 63 reviews, and the sources still do not badge it. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Amazon star rating

70%

Star rating on amazon.co.uk, divided by five and multiplied by 70, then rounded. A 4.6-star row and a 4.7-star row are not equal. Five stars from three ratings do not outweigh a large file on their own. This block is 70 of the score. It is not a measured pH.

2

Review volume

30%

log10 of the amazon.co.uk review count, times 10, capped at 30. Green Haven's 1,053 reviews take the cap. Three ratings add only a few points. The cap can place a clashing 50 L title above a bag whose litres match. It is not a test of the compost.

What to match before you buy

Rhododendron compost on amazon.co.uk is ericaceous potting mix for rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers and often blueberries. Shoppers are on chalk and need a pot or a raised bed, already have acid soil and want a sack, or have been shown multi-purpose compost or a plant food by mistake. The RHS target is about pH 5.0 to 6.0, moist and well drained. Stars on a listing are buyer ratings. They are not a grow trial. Start with the product type. It has to be ericaceous or acid compost.

Best for

  • A chalk garden that needs a pot or a 30 cm isolated bed, plus rainwater
  • An acid bed where you can lift a 40–50 L sack
  • One patio shrub, where about 10–20 L is enough and a 1 L tub is poor value

Not ideal for

  • Using multi-purpose compost or a feed in place of ericaceous compost
  • One bag spread on a chalk border in the hope it converts the soil
  • Reading organic, or an A–E sourcing mark, as peat-free

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Multi-purpose compost or a feed

Ericaceous compost is the root medium. Multi-purpose compost is the wrong chemistry. A continuous-release plant food is a separate category and does not replace the bag.

  2. 2

    One bag on chalk

Compost alone will not hold pH on limey ground. Near pH 7, use a pot or a 30 cm isolated bed, and rainwater. Do not use aluminium sulphate.

  3. 3

    A 50 L title with a different volume field

Several titles here print 20 L, 44 L or 60 L in the volume field. Price per title litre uses the title, not a weighed fill. Confirm the sack you receive.

What to weigh up

Litres you can believe

High

The title size and the volume field are two claims. They should be the same number before you compare price per litre. In this set only Growmoor 40 L, among the large bags, shows that match, with 439 reviews. The 1 L and 2 L UK GROW tubs also match, and they are top-ups at several pounds per litre. Laeto, TerraGrade, SIC, Green Haven and Indigo each print a clash. A 6 kg line on a 50 L title, or a buyer who weighed about 12 kg, is a reason to look twice, not a laboratory fill test.

Peat, pH and feed

High

Call the bag peat-free only when those words are on the listing. Organic is not peat-free. A Responsible Sourcing A–E mark is voluntary and is not proof. No retail peat ban was in force in these sources. UK GROW says peat-free in the title and still names peat in a bullet, so that row is a conflict, not a clean claim. SIC is the listing that states peat-free without that clash, and it also prints pH 4.0, while its litres do not match. A stated pH is a number. Between four and five is a range.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Chalk, a pot or an isolated bed

You are on chalk or near pH 7, so the shrub needs a pot or a bed isolated by about 30 cm, plus rainwater. Growmoor Ericaceous 40 L is the top pick at about £11.39, with 4.6 from 439 reviews. The title and the volume field both say 40 L. It does not say peat-free and it does not print a pH. One bag will not convert the border.

An acid bed and a sack you can lift

The border is already acid and you want a 40–50 L sack. Growmoor Ericaceous 40 L lists 7.1 kg, lighter than the 50 L rows at 10–14.9 kg, and the litres match. SIC Ericaceous 50 L states peat-free and pH 4.0, at about £12.49, with 4.7 from 445 reviews. Its volume field says 60 L.

One shrub on a patio

One shrub needs about 10–20 L. A 1 L tub is poor value at about £7.99 a litre. Laeto Ericaceous 20 L is the 20 L title, at about £11.54, with 4.6 from 656 reviews. The volume field says 10 L, and the saved reviews overlap the 50 L Laeto listing. If the litres must match, this row does not.

Common questions about rhododendron composts

What pH should rhododendron compost sit at?
The Royal Horticultural Society puts rhododendrons at about pH 5.0 to 6.0, in a mix that stays moist and drains. In this set only SIC prints a number, pH 4.0, and UK GROW prints between four and five. Other listings say low pH or acid, or they print no figure. Do not invent a number the bag does not show. Compost at that pH still will not hold an alkaline border on its own.
Will one bag of rhododendron compost fix a chalk garden?
No. The RHS says compost alone will not hold pH on limey ground. Near pH 7, use a pot or a bed isolated by about 30 cm, and water with rainwater. Hard tap water is only a short summer stopgap. Do not use aluminium sulphate. Sulphur can acidify soil, but test first, and peat is not the recommended acidifier. One sack on a chalk border is a common mistake, not a cure.
Is rhododendron compost peat-free, and is peat banned in the UK?
Treat a bag as peat-free only if the listing says peat-free. Organic is not that claim, and a Responsible Sourcing A–E mark is not proof. The RHS rule of thumb is that a bag which does not say peat-free most likely is not. No statute banning retail peat was in force in these sources. A Defra letter of 29 January 2026 said the government would legislate when parliamentary time allows. UK GROW titles say peat-free while a bullet still names peat.
Which rhododendron compost is the top pick?
Growmoor Ericaceous 40 L is the top pick at about £11.39, with 4.6 from 439 amazon.co.uk reviews. The title and the volume field both say 40 L, and the digest treats it as the bag that clears a matching volume and at least 50 reviews. The listing does not say peat-free and does not state a pH. The score is stars plus review count. It is not a grow trial and not an RHS endorsement.
Why is there no best-value rhododendron compost?
The display badges and the digest name a top pick and do not name a best value. Price per title litre is the shelf price divided by the title size, not a checked fill. TerraGrade is about £0.20 per title litre, and the volume field says 44 L against a 50 L title, so it fails the matching-litre rule. A low figure on a clashing bag is not a value award. The 1 L and 2 L tubs cost several pounds per litre.
What if the litre fields on rhododendron compost disagree?
Read the title size and the volume field as two claims. Laeto's 50 L title has a 20 L volume field, and the 20 L title has a 10 L field. TerraGrade says 50 L and 44 L. SIC and Green Haven say 50 L and 60 L. Indigo says 46 L and 50 L. A short bag is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 description issue, not a British Standard failure. Confirm the sack you receive before you trust the title.
When should you buy a feed instead of more rhododendron compost?
A compost bag is the root medium. A fertiliser is a separate product. Some ericaceous composts describe about four to six weeks of nutrients, then an ericaceous feed. Indigo claims six months of slow-release feed, which is a listing claim, not a measured life. Green Haven and the UK GROW tubs claim slow-release iron. For a feed comparison, see the rhododendron fertiliser comparison.
When should you stop and get help with a rhododendron?
Use a specialist for waterlogging, a retaining edge, suspected root disease, or moving a mature shrub. Open bags outdoors, wear gloves, and do not store them in a greenhouse. Public Health Scotland and the RHS both flag compost dust, including a Legionella risk. Chest illness after that dust needs a doctor. Do not bury the rootball, and do not rely on one bag to change chalk. Planting depth is a separate job from choosing the sack.

Our verdict

The top pick is Growmoor Ericaceous 40 L at about £11.39. The display badge and the digest treat it as the listing that clears a matching volume field and at least 50 reviews: both lines say 40 L, with 4.6 from 439 reviews. The listing does not say peat-free and does not state a pH. Green Haven scores 94 on stars plus review count, against Growmoor's 90, and its volume field says 60 L on a 50 L title, so it is not badged. UK GROW Ericaceous 1 L also shows agreeing litre fields and 63 reviews. The sources do not award it: the title and a bullet conflict on peat, and the tub is a top-up at about £7.99 a litre. No best value is named. TerraGrade is about £0.20 per title litre, and the volume field says 44 L against a 50 L title. None of these scores is a laboratory test.

The display badges and the digest name a top pick and do not name a best value. A low price per title litre is not a badge when the litre fields disagree.
