Lava rock for succulent pots

Updated: October 2026

You are dressing a cactus, a succulent or a small bonsai, and the amazon.co.uk page in front of you also talks about fire pits. Lava rock for succulent pots is a fine, rinsed grade, not a 4 kg cobble and not a 150 g décor pack treated as grit. You should leave knowing the size a pot wants, why the dust has to come off, and which bags in this set are even close. Border square metres and burner layouts stay off this page. The full set is the [lava mulch comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/lava-mulch). Products Compared did not pot these plants in a trial. Prices are GBP figures from 21 October 2026.

The grade a pot actually wants

Cactocereus sells horticultural lapillo at 3–6 mm, from £4.45 to £11.95, and suggests a 20–60 percent mix. That bag is not in this set, and the mix rate belongs to that seller. Dr.Soil lists 4–8 mm and says to rinse transport dust. Black Rock Grill, about £19.50, and the twin at about £39.00, is 4–8 cm. SOUJOY, about £15.99 for 4.54 kg, is 2–3 inches. A UK reviewer who wanted smaller Black Rock Grill pieces for orchids did not describe a success. If the title says succulents and the size says 4–8 cm, believe the size. The band you want is about 3–8 mm. Anothera’s 1/2 inch, about 13 mm, is coarser than lapillo. The three bands are in the buying guide.

Rinse, then a thin dressing

Dust repeats in the UK pot reviews. YUNSTK buyers mention it. Lava-Lite Plus reviews put it at about 20 percent of one bag and about 80 percent of another. SHINEOFI’s UK note calls the stones very dusty. Rinse a fine grade until the water runs clearer, then dry it. Rinsing does not turn a 4 kg fire bag into horticultural grit. Keep the dressing off the crown. A few millimetres on a 1 litre pot is enough. One UK YUNSTK review said fungus gnats still settled in the stones, so a lava top is not a gnat control.

What this amazon.co.uk set offers

YUNSTK, B09PKTGC6C, is the closest bag, and only partly the job. About £9.99 for 907 g, about £11.01/kg, 4.4 from 243, no millimetre grade. UK reviews like the colour on small pots and report dust, a short bag and a duller shade. One fill was closer to 800 ml, and one weight was 880 g against a 2 litre line. A bullet calls it a pumice-based mix with zeolite and maifan. The manufacturer field reads YUNLEX. Use it, after a rinse, on a few pots. Anothera, B0BDJZYMQ8, is about £31.72 for 2.27 kg of 1/2 inch red granule, and the 4.4 from 176 is not a UK sample. The volume field says 1 litre and the unit count says about 2.37 litres. Lava-Lite Plus has no piece size, and the UK reviews are mostly dust. CARURBODY has no piece size. SHINEOFI and jojofuny are 150 g packs, about £96.60/kg and about £63.69/kg. The skip list is on best lava rocks in this set.

What the topping will not do

A stone dressing does not replace cactus food. Feed, if you need it, is a fertiliser on moist compost. Lava is not pumice and not expanded clay. A YUNSTK bullet that names pumice, zeolite and maifan is a blend. It will not neutralise the compost. A pH around 8.0 from one specialist red lava, or a neutral line on another seller’s bag, is not a measurement of YUNSTK or Anothera. A thin layer does not rewrite the compost. It will not make cobble appropriate, and nothing here establishes fish safety. A border fork is lava mulch versus bark. Open ground is how to lay lava mulch. On the windowsill, stay with rinsed fine grit off the crown.

Common questions

What size belongs in a succulent pot?
About 3–8 mm. Cactocereus sells 3–6 mm and Dr.Soil lists 4–8 mm, and neither bag is in this set. Black Rock Grill at 4–8 cm and SOUJOY at 2–3 inches are fire grades. Anothera’s 1/2 inch is about 13 mm.
Should I rinse the dust first?
Yes, on a fine grade. UK reviews mention dust on YUNSTK, Lava-Lite Plus and SHINEOFI. Rinse until the water runs clearer, then dry the grit. Rinsing does not shrink 4–8 cm cobble into horticultural grit.
Can I use the 4 kg Black Rock Grill or SOUJOY bag as a top dressing?
Not on a normal succulent pot. Those pieces are 4–8 cm and 2–3 inches. UK reviews already call the Black Rock Grill stones too big for a small barbecue tray. A pot is smaller.
Is the YUNSTK 907 g mix a single lava grade?
No. A bullet calls it a pumice-based mix with zeolite and maifan, and no millimetre size is stated. UK reviews mention about 800 ml and 880 g against a 2 litre, 907 g line. Treat it as a small mixed dressing after a rinse.
Why are 150 g bags a poor way to dress a collection?
The weight is a handful and the price per kilogram is high. SHINEOFI is about £14.49 for 150 g, about £96.60/kg. jojofuny is about £10.19 for 2–4 cm stones and has no star line. One tiny pot is not a windowsill of plants.
Do US reviews of Anothera count as UK pot experience?
No. The 4.4 from 176 is United States text, plus one from the United Arab Emirates. You can still read the 1/2 inch bullet and about £31.72 for 2.27 kg. The 1 litre field conflicts with about 2.37 litres.
Is lava the same as pumice, and will it replace cactus food?
No. Pumice, horticultural grit and expanded clay are different materials. A topping does not feed the plant. One comment that gnats settled in YUNSTK stones is not a trial, and it blocks any claim that the dressing stops them.
