How to lay lava mulch

Updated: October 2026

You have already chosen a mineral cover for a settled border, and you want it on the soil without burying the shrubs or ordering from a barbecue slogan. This is how to lay lava mulch on that bed: weed first, keep the layer off woody stems, and use a coverage figure that matches the grade you bought. If the bag is 4–8 cm fire rock, the appliance manual takes over, and a gas fault is a Gas Safe job. Products Compared has not laid these bags in a trial. Listing details are on the [lava mulch comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/lava-mulch), checked on 21 October 2026.

Prepare the bed

Start when the soil is moist, not frozen and not waterlogged. Pull perennial weeds first. A stone layer hides couch grass. It does not remove it. Keep about 10 cm clear of woody stems. A collar holds moisture against the bark, and a cobble is harder to pull back than bark. If you are about to replant, read lava mulch versus bark. The buying guide checks that the bag is landscape grade rather than fire cobble. Work from the back of the bed. A 150 g pack will not cover a 2 m strip.

How much to order

There is no RHS kilogram rate for lava. The organic depth, at least 5 cm and ideally 7.5 cm, is for bark and compost. The RHS gravel note, 25 kg covering about 0.6 m² at 5 cm, is denser stone. The only lava coverage here is 8 kg of 10–14 mm red lava for about 0.5 m² at 20 mm. None of the 11 bags is that grade. Black Rock Grill’s 2 kg for about 35 by 25 cm is one layer of 4–8 cm stones, a fire bed. SOUJOY’s 4.54 kg bag gives no square-metre rate. When a title says 20 lb and the item weight is 8.51 kg, plan from 8.51 kg. A thin cactus dressing is the pots page, not a square-metre sum.

Place it, including the stem gap

Tip onto a board or a tarp, not onto the crown. Leave about 10 cm of bare soil around woody stems, and keep herbaceous crowns visible. If you cannot see the crown, you have gone too far. A permeable sheet is optional, and only if you do not want self-seeding. Do not use a solid sheet that puddles. Fabric will not turn 4–8 cm cobbles into a weed-proof mulch. Dark stone warms the soil more than pale gravel. Do not assign that to a title that says black while the colour field says Multi, or while reviews describe red. Stone will not feed the bed.

If the bag is for a burner

If the stones are going into a gas fire pit, a chiminea or a barbecue, stop. This is not a burner manual. Wet lava can pop. Brightstar’s natural-gas manual says not to tip the bag onto the burner, because dust blocks the jets, to keep rock off the pilot, and to use one layer on that appliance. Dry the rock after rinsing or rain. There is no single depth for every burner. Rahato’s bullets say the rocks must be completely dry before lighting and state up to 2000°F (1093°C). That is the seller’s line, not a UK appliance approval. Do not hammer 4–8 cm pieces because reviewers said they were too big for a small tray. Buy the grade the manual wants. Those bags are named on best lava rocks in this set. If you smell gas, if ignition is delayed, or if flame comes from under the pan, call a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Short or dusty bags

If the bag is mostly dust, or the fill is short, do not rake it in. YUNSTK lists 2 litres and 907 g, and UK reviews mention about 800 ml and 880 g. Lava-Lite Plus is described as 3 litres, with dusty, short fills in the UK reviews. SHINEOFI’s large bag is 150 g. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is satisfactory quality. Section 11 is the duty to match the description. Citizens Advice covers England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland covers Scotland, and in Northern Ireland you contact the local council. Photograph the fill before it is on the soil.

Common questions

Do I weed and water before laying stone?
Yes. Pull perennial weeds first, and lay when the soil is moist rather than frozen or waterlogged. Stone will not correct a cracked bed or a flooded one.
How far from a shrub stem should the layer stop?
About 10 cm, the woody-stem gap the RHS gives for organic mulch. A collar of stone holds damp against the bark. Leave herbaceous crowns visible too.
Can I use the 35 by 25 cm line to order a border?
No. That bullet is one layer of 4–8 cm stones. The lava figure in these sources is 8 kg of 10–14 mm for about 0.5 m² at 20 mm, and that grade is not in this set.
Should I put a membrane under it?
Only if you want to stop self-seeding. Use a permeable sheet, cut holes for the plants you are keeping, and do not expect fabric to close the gaps between 4–8 cm cobbles.
Why must fire rock be dry, and when does the manual take over?
Wet lava can pop. Dry it, keep dust and rock off the pilot, and do not empty the bag onto the jets. Your own manual sets the layer. A gas smell, delayed ignition or flame under the pan is a Gas Safe call.
Will the layer feed the bed or kill every weed?
Neither. Gravel and stone do not improve fertility or structure, and weeds still use the gaps. If you wanted the cover to rot down, you wanted bark or compost.
