Ratchet spanner comparison 2026

The best ratchet spanners, compared.

Top pick: Enventor 14-piece flex Best value: Qnkaa 12-piece 8–19 mm – The only full 8–19 mm list under £40 with its own sample of 990, at about £29.95. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

A ratchet spanner turns a nut in one direction and freewheels in the other, so you can work in a short arc without lifting the tool off. UK buyers use metric sets for DIY, bicycles and cars. Most are chrome vanadium combination tools, with an open jaw and a ratcheting ring. A double-ended ring version carries two sizes and has no open jaw. A suitable set is the one whose printed sizes match the nuts you actually meet. A title that says 8–19 mm on an eight-piece set usually skips 9, 11, 16 and 18 mm. Swing is the arc between clicks. A 72-tooth gear is about 5° a step, from 360 divided by 72, a rule of thumb for access rather than a strength rating. A flex head, often marked 180°, helps when the handle cannot sit square to the nut. The same joint can feel loose. A ratchet spanner does not measure torque, and a pipe on the handle is not an extension. How to order those checks is in the [ratchet spanner buying guide](/hub/hand-tools/ratchet-spanner/sub/ratchet-spanner-buying-guide).

The best ratchet spanners in detail

Enventor 14-piece flex

Rank 1

Enventor 14-piece flex

∼£46

Our view

Enventor DS003 is a 14-piece 180° flex-head set at about £45.99, claiming 90 teeth and a 4° swing, with a 12-point box end, every size from 6 mm to 19 mm, and a toolbox. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.9 from 15 reviews. The listing holds five short texts, all favourable, and one of them notes that use so far has been short. That sample is too small to carry the same weight as the four-figure counts on the dearer sets. The bullets say chrome vanadium and name no British Standard. The score is 42, and it stays below sets with hundreds of reviews for that reason.

Pros

  • Full 6–19 mm list
  • 180° and 4° stated on the title
  • Toolbox included
  • Short reviews are favourable

Cons

  • Only 15 reviews
  • Five texts, and one says use has been short
  • About £45.99
  • No standard named

Best for: You want a stated 4° flex head and the small sizes, and you accept a tiny review sample.

Less suitable: You are choosing on star rating alone. 4.9 from 15 is not 4.7 from 6,348.

Which sizes are included?

Every millimetre from 6 mm to 19 mm, 14 spanners, plus a toolbox.

Wera Joker 11-piece

Rank 2

Wera Joker 11-piece

∼£203

Our view

Wera 05020013001 is an 11-piece Joker set at about £203.10. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.8 from 5,331 reviews. The bullets describe a holding plate, a limit stop, and double-hex geometry. The included sizes skip 9 mm. The torque, finish, and length fields on the listing are not usable. One long review praises the jaw for holding a nut and says the plate bent in everyday use. The score is 68, close to the top pick and dearer, so it does not lead.

Pros

  • Holding plate and limit stop stated in the bullets
  • 4.8 from 5,331 reviews
  • Lengths printed beside each size
  • Czech Republic stated as origin

Cons

  • About £203.10
  • No 9 mm
  • Open jaw criticised for slip and a bent plate
  • Torque, finish, and length fields are unusable

Best for: You want the holding jaw for placing a nut, and you can do without 9 mm.

Less suitable: You want a plain open jaw for every fastener, or you are reading the torque field as a rating.

Common questions

What does the open jaw do?

The bullets name a metal plate in the jaw, a limit stop, and double-hex geometry. A long UK review says that jaw holds a nut at an angle, and also that the plate bent and the jaw slipped in ordinary use.

Is 9 mm included?

No. The included line runs 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 mm, with a length beside each size.

Is the torque field usable?

It reads 1 centimetre-kilogram. The finish field says powder coated and the length field says 11 inches. Treat those three as unusable.

HYCHIKA 9-piece flex

Rank 3

HYCHIKA 9-piece flex

∼£28

Our view

HYCHIKA’s nine-piece flex set is about £27.89, with a 180° head, 72 teeth, a 5° claim, and a canvas bag. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.8 from 64. The sizes skip 7, 9, 11, 16 and 18 mm. The jaw field says 6 mm, which is the smallest size, not the largest. Reviews split between praise for the flex head and a sloppy mechanism that is not for heavy duty. The score is 48.

Pros

  • 180° head and a bag stated
  • Includes 6 mm
  • About £27.89
  • Flex head praised for access

Cons

  • Several sizes missing inside 6–19 mm
  • Only 64 reviews
  • Jaw field says 6 mm
  • Sloppy action in a detailed review

Best for: You want a flex head and a bag, and the nine printed sizes cover your nuts.

Less suitable: You need a stiff head for a seized nut, or every size from 6 to 19 mm.

What is the jaw-capacity field?

It says 6 mm, which is the smallest size in the list, not the largest.

Bosch Professional 10-piece

Rank 4

Bosch Professional 10-piece

∼£102

Our view

Bosch Professional 1600A016BU is ten combination ratchet spanners at about £101.53, with a toothless ratchet and a stated 3° backswing, in a wrap bag. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.7 from 6,348 reviews. The size list skips 9 mm and 11 mm. Reviews describe a silent action and deals below this price. The length field says 3 cm. The score is 71. That is listing arithmetic, not a lab test.

Pros

  • 3° backswing stated on the listing
  • 4.7 from 6,348 reviews
  • Wrap bag included
  • Direction arrow noted in a review

Cons

  • No 9 mm or 11 mm
  • Silent action confuses some buyers
  • About £101.53, with reviews citing lower deal prices
  • Length field of 3 cm

Best for: You want a short, quiet arc and you already know 9 mm and 11 mm are not in the box.

Less suitable: You need every millimetre from 8 to 19, or you use the click as your only cue.

Enventor 14-piece 6–19 mm

Rank 5

Enventor 14-piece 6–19 mm

∼£40

Our view

Enventor SGRD008 is a 14-piece set at about £39.99 listing every size from 6 to 19 mm, with a case and a 72-tooth, 5° claim. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.7 from 46. The components line says flex-head and the title does not. A review says the gear is a 36-tooth dual pawl, not a true 72-tooth wheel. Reviews also say the black coating chips. The score is 46. The full list is the reason to look, and the head conflict is the reason to check the tool in person.

Pros

  • Full 6–19 mm list
  • Toolbox included
  • 12-point ring stated
  • Case praised in reviews

Cons

  • Only 46 reviews
  • Flex-head wording conflicts with the title
  • Tooth count challenged
  • Black coating chips

Best for: You need 6 mm and 7 mm as well as the usual car sizes, and you can check the head in person.

Less suitable: You need a proven 180° pivot, or a large review sample.

Amazon Basics 5-piece

Rank 6

Our view

Amazon Basics DS-RWS-5M is five ratchet spanners at about £18.53: 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 mm, with a 72-tooth and 5° claim. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.6 from 9,751, and the review text is the same as the 7-piece listing. A review objects to the missing 12 mm. One reviewer says the gearing is plastic. • Large star line, shared with the other Amazon Basics listing

Cons

  • No 12 mm

Common questions

What sizes are on each spanner?

6×8, 10×12, 11×13, 14×17 and 19×21 mm. There is no open jaw.

Is the ratchet reversible?

The bullets say the ratchets are reversible. They do not state a tooth count or a swing angle.

What do reviews say about strength?

Buyers use them in tight gaps and for light jobs. More than one says they are not for extremely tight bolts. One calls the body a sandwich of two layers. One says it broke on first use.

How we compared

Twelve ratchet-spanner listings on amazon.co.uk were scored from the star line, the review count, and conflicts in the listing. A shared review file, a count under 20, an unusable length or torque field, or a size-list conflict holds a score down. A large sample and a printed size list with no gaps hold it up. Star line is 35, review sample 25, size list 25, and listing conflicts 15. The highest score is the top pick. Best value is the full 8–19 mm list under £40 with its own review sample over 500. There is no lab and no torque bench. The score is not a claim of BS ISO 1711-1 compliance.

1

Star line

35%

The amazon.co.uk star rating on that listing. A high star line from a small sample does not outrank a large sample on stars alone.

2

Review sample

25%

A large sample holds the score up. A review count under 20 holds it down. A star line shared with another ASIN is not two samples.

3

Size list

25%

A printed size list with no gaps holds the score up. A title range that skips sizes, or a list that fights the title, holds it down.

4

Listing conflicts

15%

An unusable length or torque field, a piece count that disagrees with the bullet, or a head line that fights the title holds the score down.

Ratchet spanner buying guide

Count the sizes, then the swing, then whether the head is fixed or flexible, and leave the star line last. A ratchet spanner does not measure torque. None of the scores is a bench test.

What is a ratchet spanner?

A ratchet spanner drives one way and freewheels the other, so you can turn a nut in a short arc without lifting the tool off. UK buyers choose metric sets for DIY, bicycles and cars. Most are chrome vanadium. A claimed 72-tooth gear is about 5° per step, from 360 divided by 72. That figure is a rule of thumb for how little the handle has to move. It is not a strength rating and it is not a torque figure. A finer claim, such as a toothless ring with a 3° backswing, is still about access.

Best for

  • A home mechanic who needs every millimetre from 8 to 19 mm in one set
  • A short arc where the handle has little room to swing
  • Light nuts in a tight gap, where a flat ring is enough and an open jaw is not

Not ideal for

  • A fastener with a specified torque
  • A stiff nut you mean to free with a pipe or a hammer
  • Anyone who treats a flex head as the stronger head

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Trusting the title range

An 8–19 mm title on eight pieces usually skips 9, 11, 16 and 18 mm. A five-piece list of 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 mm has no 12 mm. Count the bullet. If the box does not match the title, that is a description problem under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

  2. 2

Reading a tooth count as torque

A 72-tooth gear is about 5° a step, from 360 divided by 72. That is a rule of thumb for access. A field that says 72 Newton metres next to a 72-tooth claim is not a test. A ratchet spanner does not measure torque.

  3. 3

Treating a shared star line as two samples

Two listings can show the same stars and the same review text. A missing-12 mm complaint that fits one size list does not prove the other list. A 4.9 from 15 reviews is not the same evidence as 4.7 from several thousand.

What to weigh up

Size list

High

Count the millimetres in the bullet, not the title range. An 8–19 mm title on an eight-piece set usually means 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 19, so 9, 11, 16 and 18 are missing. A five-piece list of 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 mm has no 12 mm, and a UK review complains about that gap. A twelve-piece list can include every size from 8 to 19 mm. A fourteen-piece list can run from 6 to 19 mm with no gaps. A double-ended ring set pairs sizes from 6×8 to 19×21 mm and has no open jaw.

Swing and head

High

Swing is access. A 72-tooth gear is about 5° per step, from 360 divided by 72, a rule of thumb. A listing may claim 90 teeth and 4°, or a toothless ratchet from a 3° backswing. One review of a 72-tooth claim says the gear is a 36-tooth dual pawl that only behaves like 72. A field that prints 72 Newton metres beside a tooth count is not a measured torque. A ratchet spanner does not measure torque. The head is the next choice.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Every size from 8 to 19 mm

You need 9 mm and 11 mm as well as the usual car sizes, in one pouch. The Qnkaa 12-piece set is about £29.95, with 4.6 from 990 reviews on this listing, and the bullet lists every millimetre from 8 to 19 mm. Isolated reviews describe a loose 10 mm and an early break. It does not include 6 mm or 7 mm.

A short, quiet arc

You want a stated 3° backswing and you already know 9 mm and 11 mm are not in the box. The Bosch Professional 10-piece set is about £101.53, with 4.7 from 6,348 reviews. The ratchet is toothless, so some buyers miss the click. The length field is printed as 3 cm.

Placing a nut one-handed

You want a jaw that holds a nut, and you can do without 9 mm. The Wera Joker 11-piece set is about £203.10, with 4.8 from 5,331 reviews. The bullets name a holding plate and a limit stop. A long review says that plate bent and the jaw slipped in ordinary use.

Common questions about ratchet spanners

Which ratchet spanner is the top pick in this comparison?
The top pick is the Bosch Professional 10-piece set, about £101.53, with 4.7 from 6,348 amazon.co.uk reviews. The listing states a toothless ratchet and a 3° backswing, in a wrap bag. The score is 71. The size list skips 9 mm and 11 mm, and the length field is printed as 3 cm. The silent action is the design. This is a listing score, not a lab test.
Which ratchet spanner is the best value?
The best value is the Qnkaa 12-piece set at about £29.95, with 4.6 from 990 reviews on this listing. It is the full 8–19 mm list under £40 with its own sample over 500. The bullets claim 72 teeth, a 5° swing and HRC 48, plus a roll pouch. No British Standard is named. Isolated reviews describe a loose 10 mm, chipped chrome, and an early failure of a 12 mm or a 15 mm.
How much does a ratchet spanner set cost on amazon.co.uk?
On these twelve amazon.co.uk extracts, shelf prices run from about £16.26 to about £203.10. Entry sets sit around £16 to £20. Mid-price sets sit around £28 to £46. The two dearer listings are about £101.53 and about £203.10. Older deal prices mentioned in reviews are not the price in this comparison. These figures are the display extract, not a live re-check.
What should you check before you buy a ratchet spanner?
Count the sizes in the bullet, not only the title range. An 8–19 mm title on eight pieces usually skips 9, 11, 16 and 18 mm. Then read the swing: a 72-tooth claim is about 5° a step, a rule of thumb, not a torque rating. Choose a flex head only when the handle cannot sit square to the nut. Last, read the star line against the sample. Fifteen reviews are weaker evidence than thousands on one listing.
Is a flex head stronger than a fixed head?
No. A flex head, often marked 180°, is for access when the handle cannot sit square to the nut. It is not a stronger tool, and it is a poor breaker. Reviews describe play, a bulky head, and a 19 mm that seized after about two uses. Keep a fixed head for a stiff nut you can reach in a straight line. Do not hammer a ratchet, and do not put a pipe on the handle.
Does a ratchet spanner measure torque?
No. A ratchet spanner does not measure torque. A field that says 72 Newton metres next to a 72-tooth claim is not a test result. For a fastener with a specified figure, use a torque wrench and the maker’s value. A plain open jaw, without a ratchet, is a different tool, set out in the combination spanner comparison. If the jaw has spread, or the nut is already rounded, stop.
When should you stop and call a professional?
Call a professional for a specified safety-critical fastener, for gas or pressurised work, when a jaw has spread, and when a nut is already rounded. HSE leaflet INDG229 tells workplaces not to use a pipe as an extension and to scrap a splayed spanner. PUWER 1998 applies at work, not on a private driveway. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires satisfactory quality and a match to the description. None of these listings cites BS ISO 1711-1.

Our verdict

In this set of twelve amazon.co.uk listings, the top pick is the Bosch Professional 10-piece set at about £101.53, with 4.7 from 6,348 reviews and a stated 3° toothless ratchet. The score is 71. The list skips 9 mm and 11 mm. The best value is the Qnkaa 12-piece set at about £29.95, with 4.6 from 990 reviews. It is the only full 8–19 mm list under £40 with its own sample over 500. A cheaper set with a missing 12 mm, or a star line shared with another listing, does not take that place. Each score uses the star line, the sample and listing conflicts. It is not a lab test.
