A lever clamp is a steel ratchet you close with a lever. In the UK you use one to hold a track-saw guide rail, or to hold work in a dog hole on a holed bench. It is not a screw F-clamp, a parallel clamp, a toggle clamp or a locking plier. The usual shop unit is a pair, so both ends of a rail can be held. The foot that enters the slot decides the fit. Slots differ, so a list of names on the packaging is not proof. Check the spigot against the track in front of you. In this class the opening is about 160 mm and the throat about 60 mm. A longer throat is still a rail clamp, not a sash clamp. A printed kilogram figure is a claim unless the listing shows a method. Covers can slip or mark the timber, and the lever needs room to swing. This is not lifting gear. How to match a foot to a slot is in the [guide rail fit](/hub/hand-tools/lever-clamp/sub/lever-clamp-guide-rail) guide.

The best lever clamps in detail

Jorgensen ratchet guide-rail clamp, 2-pack

Rank 1

Jorgensen ratchet guide-rail clamp, 2-pack

∼£34

Our view

On a Festool-pattern rail or a 19 mm bench-dog hole, the Jorgensen 93811A pair is the longer-throat ratchet in this set, with a 168 mm opening and a 73 mm throat printed on the listing. Amazon.co.uk shows the pair at £33.99, with 4.8 from 97 reviews and rank 3 in Clamp Sets. UK reviews praise the weight and report that the foot entered a Festool rail and a holed bench. The same reviews say a DeWalt track needed grinding before the foot sat, and an Einhell track did not fit, so the six-brand list is still a claim you check against the slot. The bullets print 181 kg and the word electromagnetic, but no magnet or coil is described elsewhere, so treat 181 kg as a printed force line. Alloy steel and aluminium are named, the pair weighs 1.11 kg, and the T-track line is 12.7 mm by 6.4 mm. It is the top pick here when you want that throat and the larger review sample, and you can try the foot before you rely on the brand list.

Pros

  • 4.8 from 97 reviews and rank 3 in Clamp Sets
  • 168 mm opening and 73 mm throat printed
  • UK reviews report Festool rail fit and bench-dog use

Cons

  • UK reviews say a DeWalt track needed grinding
  • An Einhell track did not fit in a UK review
  • 181 kg is a listing claim, and the electromagnetic wording is unsupported

Best for: A Festool-pattern rail or a bench-dog hole when you want the heavier pair in this set and can check the slot

Less suitable: A DeWalt or Einhell rail unless you have confirmed the foot, and any job that needs a measured force rather than a printed kilogram figure

Common questions

Does the 181 kg figure mean it is magnetic?

The bullet prints 181 kg and calls it electromagnetic. No magnet or coil is described anywhere else on the listing. Treat 181 kg as the printed force claim.

Will it fit every rail named on the listing?

The listing names Festool, DeWalt, Makita, Metabo, Kreg and Jorgensen. UK reviews report a Festool fit, a DeWalt track that needed grinding, and an Einhell track that did not fit.

Is a case included?

The bullets do not list a storage case.

GOEDEKE lever clamp, 2-pack

Rank 2

GOEDEKE lever clamp, 2-pack

∼£25

Our view

The GOEDEKE pair is the £24.99 ratchet in this set, printed as 160 mm by 60 mm and sold as one-handed. The star line is 4.8 from 21 amazon.co.uk reviews, the same rating as the Jorgensen pair on a much smaller sample. UK reviews mention a circular-saw guide rail, a Parkside track, and T-tracks on a drill press, bandsaw and table saw, none of which the bullets name. The plastic covers are called slippery, and the ratchet is described as fiddly until you have used it a few times. One bullet says 40CR steel and an ABS handle, another says Cr-V steel, and the listing does not choose between them. No kilogram force is printed, so you cannot set it beside the 181 kg or 245 kg lines on the other two pairs. It suits a 160 mm hold if you can try the foot in the slot and you accept a thin review record.

Pros

  • Lowest pair price in this set at £24.99
  • 160 mm by 60 mm printed
  • UK reviews report Parkside rail fit and general bench use

Cons

  • Only 21 reviews
  • No kilogram force on the listing
  • Plastic covers called slippery, and the steel bullets disagree

Best for: A 160 mm ratchet pair for a rail you can try in the slot, if a small review sample is acceptable

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a printed force figure or a single stated steel grade

Common questions

How much force does the listing claim?

The bullets do not print a kilogram figure. They describe a ratchet and a secure hold only.

Which steel is it?

One bullet says 40CR steel and an ABS handle. Another says Cr-V steel. The listing does not choose between them.

Which rails do reviewers mention?

UK reviews mention a circular-saw guide rail, a Parkside track, and T-tracks on a drill press, bandsaw and table saw. The bullets do not name those brands.

QWORK lever clamp, 2-pack

Rank 3

QWORK lever clamp, 2-pack

∼£26

Our view

At £26.45 the QWORK WD5814 pair is the long-record option, with 4.6 from 804 amazon.co.uk reviews. The title prints a 160 mm opening and a 60 mm throat, while a bullet says the depth can be up to 58 mm and states 245 kg, and the material row says Cr-V steel. UK reviews use the clamps on MFT-style tops, Makita track and Festool rail. One review says the body was too wide to slide along the track and sat at the ends only, so entering the slot and sliding along it are different checks. The same record includes a compression shoe that stuck, a locking nut that came off in the first week, marking unless an offcut is used, and handles that failed in ordinary use. A break after a drop from about 3 metres is a drop story, not a lifting rating, and 245 kg remains a listing claim with no method. It is the best value here when you want the 160 mm class and a large review sample near the cheapest pair, and you will not treat the kilogram figure as a test.

Pros

  • 4.6 from 804 reviews at £26.45
  • 160 mm class that matches the usual guide-rail size
  • UK reviews report MFT, Makita and Festool use

Cons

  • Throat is 60 mm in the title and 58 mm in a bullet
  • Stuck shoes, a lost nut and broken handles appear in reviews
  • 245 kg is a listing claim with no method

Best for: A 160 mm pair for a Festool or Makita pattern rail or a holed bench, at a price close to the cheapest pair and with a long review record

Less suitable: A rail the body cannot slide in, or a job that treats 245 kg as a tested capacity

Common questions

Is the throat 60 mm or 58 mm?

The title says 60 mm throat depth. A specification bullet says the depth can be up to 58 mm. Both figures are on the listing.

Do UK reviews use them on a guide rail?

Yes. Reviewers report Makita track and Festool rail, and use on an MFT-style top. One review says the body was too wide to slide along the track and sat at the ends only.

What failures show up in the reviews?

A compression shoe stuck until it was freed, a locking nut came off in the first week, a handle failed after light use of about a year, and one clamp was said to last about two weeks. A break after a drop from about 3 metres is a drop, not a lifting rating.

How we compared

Three lever-clamp pairs on amazon.co.uk were scored from the four parts already stored for each listing: Amazon stars, review-sample size, rank or shelf price, and rail fit from UK review notes. There was no lab test. A millimetre or kilogram figure is the figure the listing prints. Printed kilograms do not add points. The published caps are 40 for stars, 20 for sample, 18 for rank or price, and 12 for fit. Those caps sum to 90, so the weights below are 44, 22, 20 and 14, the same shares rounded to whole numbers that add to 100. The highest score is the top pick, once. Best value is the pair close to the lowest shelf price, with the long review record, and not the top score.

1

Stars

44%

The amazon.co.uk star rating, scaled toward a published cap of 40. In this set 4.8 scores 38 and 4.6 scores 37. The weight on this page is that cap scaled so the four parts add to 100.

2

Sample

22%

Review count in this set, with a published cap of 20. Here 804 reviews score 20, 97 reviews score 16, and 21 reviews score 8. A short sample is not treated as the same evidence as a long one.

3

Rank or price

20%

Rank in Clamp Sets or the pair's shelf price, with a published cap of 18. Rank 3 scores 18. The lowest pair price scores 16. The next price in the set scores 14. The weight is that cap scaled to the 100-point total.

4

Fit

14%

UK review notes on the slot, with a published cap of 12. A reported fit on the rail you care about scores higher. Grinding a track, a foot that did not enter, or a body too wide to slide along the slot scores lower. The part does not treat a six-brand list as a measured slot.

Lever clamp buying guide

A lever clamp in this comparison is a ratchet for a guide rail or a holed bench, sold as a pair. The slot decides fit. Opening and throat in this class sit near 160 mm and 60 mm. A printed kilogram figure is a claim. A light bar clamp and a screw fastening clamp are different tools.

What is a lever clamp?

A lever clamp here is a steel ratchet worked by a lever, not a screw F-clamp, a parallel clamp, a toggle clamp or a locking plier. Festool UK uses the name for the FS-HZ 160: 160 mm clamping width, for FS/2, FS/2-KP, FSK and MFT tops, one-handed, and described as holding under machine vibration. Axminster's quick lever guide-rail clamp is the same job at 160 mm by 60 mm throat, spigot about 12 mm by 7.4 mm, stated 170 kg.

Best for

  • Track-saw owners who will check the slot before they replace the screw clamps
  • Bench owners who want a one-handed hold in a dog hole
  • A pair at both ends of a rail, rather than a single trade clamp

Not ideal for

  • A job that treats 181 kg or 245 kg as a tested capacity
  • Lifting, hanging or carrying a workpiece
  • A sash clamp, a toggle clamp, or a light bar clamp with no rail foot

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying a screw clamp or a toggle from a lever search

A clamp you finish by turning a screw is a fastening clamp, even if the foot fits the same slot. A toggle clamp bolts to a jig. A light bar clamp sold as a lever clamp does not hold a guide rail.

  2. 2

    Trusting a six-brand fit line

One listing names Festool, DeWalt, Makita, Metabo, Kreg and Jorgensen. UK reviews on that listing report a Festool fit, a DeWalt track that needed grinding, and an Einhell track that did not fit.

  3. 3

Reading a kilogram figure as a test

245 kg, 181 kg and 170 kg are printed claims. No method is published with them here. A lever clamp is not lifting gear, and a drop from about 3 metres is not a lifting rating.

  4. 4

Using a 160 mm clamp as a sash clamp

The class is a guide-rail hold, about 160 mm opening and 60 mm throat. A longer throat in this set is still a rail clamp. Filing the spigot and then expecting an easy return is a separate mistake.

What to weigh up

Spigot and rail slot

High

The force comes from a ratchet lever. A clamp you finish by turning a screw is a fastening clamp, even when the foot fits the same slot. The spigot has to match the rail in front of you, because slots differ. One listing prints a foot of 1.27 cm by 0.64 cm and names Festool, DeWalt, Makita, Metabo, Kreg and Jorgensen. UK reviews on that listing report a Festool fit, a DeWalt track that needed grinding, and an Einhell track that did not fit.

Opening, throat and stated force

High

The class is about 160 mm opening and 60 mm throat. Festool's FS-HZ 160 is 160 mm. Axminster's quick lever is 160 mm by 60 mm throat, with a stated 170 kg. A listing that prints 168 mm and 73 mm is still a rail clamp, not a sash clamp. A title can say 60 mm while a bullet says the depth can be up to 58 mm. Stated force is a claim: 245 kg, 181 kg and 170 kg appear in the sources, and one pair prints no kilogram figure at all. No method is published with these figures.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Track-saw rail, slot checked

You will try the foot in the slot before you replace the screw clamps in the kit, and you want the longer throat in this set. The Jorgensen pair prints 168 mm by 73 mm, at about £33.99, with 4.8 from 97 reviews. UK reviews report a Festool rail and a holed bench. A DeWalt track needed grinding, and an Einhell track did not fit.

Holed bench and a long record

You want a 160 mm pair for an MFT-style top or a Festool or Makita pattern rail, close to the cheapest pair, with a long review record. The QWORK pair is about £26.45, with 4.6 from 804 reviews. One review says the body was too wide to slide and sat at the ends only. Treat 245 kg as a printed claim.

Lowest pair price

You want the lowest pair price in this set and you can try the foot in the slot. The GOEDEKE pair is about £24.99, printed as 160 mm by 60 mm, with 4.8 from 21 reviews. No kilogram force is printed, the steel bullets disagree, and the plastic covers are called slippery.

Common questions about lever clamps

What is a lever clamp?
A lever clamp is a steel ratchet worked by a lever. You use it to hold a guide rail or a board on a holed bench. It is not a screw F-clamp, a parallel clamp, a toggle clamp or a locking plier. A light bar clamp sold under the same name does not hold a guide rail. The usual buy is a pair, so both ends of the rail are held. The slot decides whether the foot seats.
How much does a lever clamp cost?
On amazon.co.uk the three pairs here are about £24.99, about £26.45 and about £33.99. The lowest pair has 4.8 from 21 reviews, too small a sample to treat as stable. The mid pair is about £26.45 with 4.6 from 804 reviews. Outside Amazon, a trade single was listed from £19.32, with a two-clamp figure near £49.93, and Festool FS-HZ 160 singles were about £46 to £68 in October 2026. Budget a pair when the rail needs both ends.
What should you check before you buy a lever clamp?
Check the mechanism first. The force should come from a ratchet lever. A clamp you finish by turning a screw is a fastening clamp, even if the foot fits the same slot. Then match the spigot to the rail in front of you, because slots differ. Read the opening and throat. This class is about 160 mm by 60 mm. Treat a kilogram figure as a claim unless a method is printed.
Will a lever clamp fit every named guide rail?
No. A listing can name Festool, DeWalt, Makita, Metabo, Kreg and Jorgensen and still fail a slot. UK reviews on that pair report a Festool fit, a DeWalt track that needed grinding, and an Einhell track that did not fit. Another record reports Makita and Festool for many users, and a body too wide to slide along one track. Entering the slot and sliding along it are different checks. Try the foot before you rely on the brand list.
Is a printed kilogram figure a tested capacity?
No. Figures such as 245 kg, 181 kg and 170 kg are printed on listings and a trade page. No method is published with them here. A force line that says electromagnetic is not a magnet if no coil is described. A break after a drop from about 3 metres is a drop story, not a lifting rating. A lever clamp is not lifting gear. Do not hang work from it or add a cheater bar.
When is a one-handed bar clamp the other tool?
When the tool is a light bar clamp rather than a rail foot. The Bessey KliKlamp is sold as a lever clamp, at about 1.2 kN with an 80 mm throat, and it does not hold a guide rail. A toggle clamp bolts to a jig. A screw fastening clamp uses the same slots and a thread. For a one-handed bar clamp that is not a guide-rail foot, see the one handed clamp comparison.
What if the clamp is faulty or the rail moves?
In Great Britain the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 are the baseline where no stricter product law applies. A trader's sale must meet the Consumer Rights Act 2015: satisfactory quality, fit for a stated purpose, and as described. Early remedy is short-term rejection, then repair or replacement. A fault within six months is presumed present at delivery unless the trader shows otherwise. Misuse and wear sit outside that right.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Jorgensen ratchet guide-rail clamp pair at about £33.99, with 4.8 from 97 reviews, a printed 168 mm opening and a 73 mm throat. UK reviews report a Festool rail and bench-dog use. A DeWalt track needed grinding in a UK review, and an Einhell track did not fit, so the brand list is still a slot you check. The best value is the QWORK pair at about £26.45, with 4.6 from 804 reviews, in the 160 mm class and close to the cheapest pair. The kilogram figures are listing claims. GOEDEKE is the lowest pair price at about £24.99, with 4.8 from 21 reviews and no printed force.
