3/4 socket set comparison 2026

The best 3/4 socket sets, compared.

Top pick: US PRO 26-piece 3/4 in and 1 in socket set Best value: CASOMAN 15-piece 3/4 in shallow impact socket set – Highest value part among the other sets: 15 sizes printed from 17 mm to 55 mm, chrome molybdenum and a case, about £60.27. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.
Peter F.Editor

A 3/4 socket set uses a 3/4 inch square drive, about 19 mm across the flats, with metric openings. You buy one for large or seized fasteners: hub and axle nuts, crank bolts, tractor and plant work, and some commercial vehicles. A workshop with a 3/4 inch impact gun or a long breaker bar often does. The square must be 3/4 inch. A 1/2 inch adapter leaves the smaller square as the part you load. Chrome molybdenum and a black finish point to an impact gun. Chromium-vanadium, carbon steel or a polished socket is for a ratchet or a T-bar. A hand socket should not go on a power tool, because it can shatter. Read each millimetre, not the piece count. Shallow sockets clear a fouling length. Deep sockets reach a long stud. The sliding bar cracks the nut. The ratchet only spins it free. A DIN or ANSI line with no standard number is not a British Standard test. Drive, steel and depth are set out in the [3/4 socket set buying guide](/hub/hand-tools/3-4-socket-set/sub/3-4-socket-set-buying-guide).

The best 3/4 socket sets in detail

US PRO 26-piece 3/4 in and 1 in socket set

Rank 1

US PRO 26-piece 3/4 in and 1 in socket set

∼£86

Our view

The US PRO 3735 is the dearest set here at £85.72 and the heaviest at 21.5 kg. The title says 3/4 in and 1 in, with a span of 21–65 mm, a 20-tooth 3/4 in ratchet, a 490 mm sliding bar, a 200 mm extension, a 200 mm L-bar, a 510 mm extension socket wrench and a 3/4 in female to 1 in male impact adaptor. The brand field says Generic, individual socket sizes are not printed, and the bullets do not name a case. The drive attribute says hex and 7/16 in, which does not match the title. amazon.co.uk shows 5.0 from seven reviews. The one saved review calls it great value and states no fault, so the star line is not a workshop log. Chrome molybdenum and black phosphate are in the bullets. You are paying for the bars and the adaptor more than for a checked millimetre list.

Pros

  • 3/4 in ratchet, 490 mm sliding bar and a 1 in impact adaptor named in the bullets
  • Chrome molybdenum and black phosphate stated
  • The one saved review states no fault

Cons

  • Socket sizes are only a 21–65 mm span
  • Drive attribute says 7/16 in hex against a 3/4 in and 1 in title
  • 5.0 from seven reviews, with one sentence saved
  • About £85.72, and no case is named
  • Brand field says Generic

Best for: You want the bars and a 3/4 in to 1 in adaptor in one box, and you will check every socket against the nut before you trust the title span.

Less suitable: You need a printed size list, or you are buying because the star line is 5.0.

Common questions

Which drive is this set?

The title says 3/4 in and 1 in. The attribute block says hex and 7/16 in. The bullets name a 3/4 in ratchet and a 3/4 in female to 1 in male adaptor.

Are the socket sizes listed?

Only as 21–65 mm in the title. The saved bullets do not print each size.

What is in the one saved review?

One UK reviewer called it great value for the price. No fault is stated. The star line is 5.0 from 7.

Ejoyous 10-piece 3/4 in deep impact socket set

Rank 2

Ejoyous 10-piece 3/4 in deep impact socket set

∼£62

Our view

The Ejoyous set prints ten deep 6-point sizes from 22 mm to 50 mm in chrome molybdenum, in a portable tool box, at £62.48. The star line is 5.0 from a single amazon.co.uk review, and no review text was saved, so that figure does not describe a nut, a gun or a failure. One bullet says eight sockets and then lists the ten sizes the title calls a 10-piece set. There is no ratchet and no sliding bar. At 6.93 kg it is light beside the sets that add bars. You can check the printed list against the fastener in front of you. You cannot check what any buyer did with it.

Pros

  • Ten sizes printed: 22, 24, 27, 30, 32, 36, 38, 41, 46 and 50 mm
  • Deep chrome-molybdenum sockets and a portable tool box
  • About £62.48

Cons

  • 5.0 from one review, and no review text was saved
  • One bullet says eight sockets and then lists ten sizes
  • No ratchet or sliding bar

Best for: You want those ten deep sizes written on the listing and you accept a single rating with no written review.

Less suitable: You want evidence of a seized nut, or a ratchet and a sliding bar in the box.

Common questions

How many sockets does the Ejoyous listing actually print?

One sentence says 8 sockets. The same bullet then prints 10 sizes, from 22 mm to 50 mm. The title says 10 pieces.

Is there a ratchet in the box?

No. The listing names the sockets and a portable tool box.

What do buyers say about it?

CASOMAN 13-piece 3/4 in deep impact socket set

Rank 3

CASOMAN 13-piece 3/4 in deep impact socket set

∼£62

Our view

The CASOMAN deep set, part CS412, lists 12 sockets from 17 mm to 41 mm plus a 1/2 in female to 3/4 in male adapter, at £61.97. It is 4.9 from 78 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest count in this comparison. Reviewers describe the weight as suited to cracking crank bolts with a 3/4 in impact gun, and they call these deep metric sizes hard to find. No saved review reports a broken socket. The square is loose enough, from the first use in one account, that a socket can fall off when you work at height. Size marks are described as paint that fades, against a bullet that says the marking is permanently laser. The list skips 28 mm and 29 mm and stops at 41 mm, so a 46 mm or 50 mm nut is not in the box. The adapter does not turn a 1/2 in gun into a 3/4 in drive, because the smaller square stays the part you are loading. It is the top pick here because it has the highest score. That is a reading of the saved amazon.co.uk pages, not a torque test, and not a claim that it is the safest set in the UK.

Pros

  • 4.9 from 78 reviews, the largest sample here
  • Deep 6-point chrome-molybdenum sockets from 17 mm to 41 mm
  • Reviewers used it on crank bolts with a 3/4 in impact gun
  • A 1/2 in female to 3/4 in male adapter is included
  • No broken socket in the saved reviews

Cons

  • Square retention loose enough, in one review, to drop a socket at height
  • Stops at 41 mm, and 28 mm and 29 mm are not listed
  • Size marks reported as paint, against a laser claim
  • No ratchet named, and a case is not in the bullets

Best for: You run a 3/4 in impact gun on crank bolts and deep nuts up to 41 mm, and you can check that the socket stays on the anvil.

Less suitable: Work at height, nuts above 41 mm, or a hand job that needs a ratchet and a sliding bar in the box.

Common questions

Does the deep CASOMAN set include a storage case?

The listing asks, and the bullets do not say a case is included. One reviewer wrote that the sockets arrived oiled in a case.

Will it fit a 1/2 in impact gun on its own?

The sockets are 3/4 in. The set includes a 1/2 in female to 3/4 in male adapter. The smaller square remains the drive you are turning.

Are the size marks lasered?

The bullet says the marking is permanently laser. One reviewer says the sizes are durable paint that fades.

CASOMAN 15-piece 3/4 in shallow impact socket set

Rank 4

CASOMAN 15-piece 3/4 in shallow impact socket set

∼£60

Our view

The CASOMAN CS534 is a shallow 6-point 3/4 in set of 15 sockets from 17 mm to 55 mm, in chrome molybdenum, with a blow-moulded case, at £60.27. amazon.co.uk shows 4.9 from 28 reviews. Saved reviews include a buyer who used the set with a 1 in impact gun on a 7.5 tonne truck, and an HGV workshop note that no socket broke or split. One reviewer wrote that no matching square drive came in the box, which matches the bullets: sockets and a case, not a ratchet or a sliding bar. The finish attribute says polished while the bullets say black phosphate. The vehicle line names hub or axle nuts on most American domestic and larger vehicles, not a UK model. A meets-or-exceeds-DIN sentence has no part number, so it is not a BS ISO 1711-2 report. It is the best value here because its value part is the highest among the sets that are not the top score. That is still not a torque rating for an HGV wheel nut.

Pros

  • Fifteen sizes printed, from 17 mm to 55 mm
  • Shallow chrome-molybdenum sockets and a blow-moulded case
  • HGV and 7.5 tonne use in saved reviews, with no split socket reported
  • About £60.27, with the sizes and the steel named

Cons

  • No ratchet or sliding bar in the bullets
  • One reviewer expected a square drive the box does not contain
  • Finish line disagrees: black phosphate in the bullets, polished in the attributes
  • DIN wording has no standard number

Best for: You have a 3/4 in impact gun and want shallow sockets through 55 mm for hex hub nuts on a van or a 7.5 tonne truck.

Less suitable: You need a ratchet in the box, a nut larger than 55 mm, or a grooved axle profile.

Common questions

Does this CASOMAN set include a 3/4 in ratchet?

The bullets list 15 sockets and a blow-moulded case. They do not name a ratchet or a sliding bar. One reviewer said no matching square drive was included.

What finish does the listing state?

The bullets say a black phosphate finish. A later attribute line says polished.

Which vehicles does the listing name?

The bullet says hub or axle nuts on most American domestic and larger vehicles. It does not name a UK model.

KATSU 21-piece 3/4 in deep socket set 420463

Rank 5

KATSU 21-piece 3/4 in deep socket set 420463

∼£70

Our view

The KATSU 420463 is a deep set at £69.99, weighing 13.1 kg, with 16 sockets listed from 19 mm to 50 mm, a 24-tooth quick-release ratchet, a sliding bar, a 4 in extension, an 8 in extension and a steel case. The title calls it an impact set, while the steel bullet says 40Cr chromium-vanadium, the hand-tool grade on a usual impact-versus-hand split rather than chrome molybdenum. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 12 reviews. Four saved reviews call it good for the price and acceptable for infrequent use on large nuts. One says the sockets fitted less tightly than a dearer set, and none of those four reports a broken tool. If you only have a ratchet, the sliding bar is in the box. If you only have an impact gun, the chromium-vanadium line is the reason to leave it there.

Pros

  • 24-tooth ratchet, sliding bar, two extensions and a steel case
  • Deep sizes printed from 19 mm to 50 mm, including 23, 26 and 28 mm
  • Four saved reviews report no broken tool
  • About £69.99 with the hand tools in the bullets, not only in the title

Cons

  • Title says impact; the steel line is chromium-vanadium
  • Sockets fitted less tightly than a dearer set, in one review
  • Only four review texts behind 12 ratings
  • 21 pieces in the title, 16 sockets in the list

Best for: You want a deep 19–50 mm set with a ratchet and a sliding bar for occasional large nuts, and you will not put these sockets on an impact gun.

Less suitable: Daily impact-gun work, or a buyer who treats the word impact on the title as the steel grade.

Common questions

Is 420463 chrome molybdenum?

No. The bullet says 40Cr chromium-vanadium. The title still calls the set an impact socket set.

What else is in the case besides sockets?

A 24-tooth quick-release ratchet, a 3/4 in sliding bar, a 4 in extension, an 8 in extension, and a steel case.

How many reviews describe a failure?

Four review bodies were saved against a count of 12. None of those four reports a broken tool. One says the sockets fit less tightly than a dearer set.

Greensen 10-piece 3/4 in deep impact socket set

Rank 6

Greensen 10-piece 3/4 in deep impact socket set

∼£56

Our view

The Greensen 10-piece listing is a deep 3/4 in set at £55.96, the lowest price in this comparison, with chrome molybdenum, a black coating and a title span of 22–50 mm. Across 20 amazon.co.uk reviews it sits at 4.5. The three saved reviews call the build strong and the tin good value, and none of them describes a broken socket or a job. The title says 6-point deep impact sockets, while the attribute lines say hex shank, so the square is not settled on the page. The same bullets name impact, standard and swivel sockets together, and they never print each millimetre. There is no ratchet and no sliding bar. At 7.15 kg it is a sockets-only box for a gun you already own, with a thin written record behind the star line.

Pros

  • About £55.96, the lowest price in this comparison
  • Chrome molybdenum named on the listing
  • Deep sockets, title span 22–50 mm
  • Three saved reviews state no defect

Cons

  • Individual millimetre sizes are not printed
  • Title says 6-point; attributes say hex shank
  • No ratchet or sliding bar
  • Only three review texts behind 20 ratings

Best for: You already own a 3/4 in impact gun and want a low-priced deep set in a plastic box.

Less suitable: You need each size printed, a ratchet in the box, or a drive line that matches the title.

Common questions

Does the Greensen set include a ratchet?

No ratchet or sliding bar is named. The bullets put the pieces in a plastic box.

Are the sockets 6-point or hex shank?

The title says 6-point deep impact sockets. The attribute lines say hex shank. The saved listing does not resolve that.

Which millimetre sizes are in the box?

The title says 22–50 mm and 10 pieces. The saved bullets do not list each size.

TecoTek 15-piece 3/4 in shallow impact socket set

Rank 7

TecoTek 15-piece 3/4 in shallow impact socket set

∼£63

Our view

The TecoTek TC061EU is a shallow 6-point chrome-molybdenum set with 15 sizes from 17 mm to 55 mm and a storage case, at £62.97. amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from three reviews, and no review text was saved. The bullets say black phosphate and impact wrenches. The finish attribute says powder coated. A meets-or-exceeds-ANSI sentence has no part number, so it is not a BS ISO 1711-2 test. The warranty line is one year, which is a seller sentence rather than a measured life. The size list matches the CASOMAN shallow span. What is missing is any account of a hub nut, a loose square or a split socket.

Pros

  • Fifteen sizes printed, from 17 mm to 55 mm
  • Shallow chrome-molybdenum sockets and a storage case
  • Bullets name impact wrenches

Cons

  • 4.4 from three reviews, and no review text was saved
  • Finish attribute says powder coated; bullets say black phosphate
  • ANSI sentence has no standard number
  • No ratchet or sliding bar

Best for: You want this shallow 17–55 mm list printed in full and you will judge the sockets in your own workshop.

Less suitable: You are choosing on review history, or you need a hand ratchet in the case.

Common questions

Can the listing be read as an impact set?

Yes. The title and bullets say shallow impact sockets for impact wrenches, in chrome molybdenum.

Does it include a ratchet?

No. The included list is 15 sockets and a heavy-duty storage case.

What do the three reviews say?

The star line is 4.4 from 3. No review text was saved, so there is no praise or complaint to quote.

Hilka 21-piece 3/4 in metric socket set

Rank 8

Hilka 21-piece 3/4 in metric socket set

∼£77

Our view

The Hilka 04102102 is a polished 3/4 in hand set at £76.95 with a reversible ratchet, a sliding T-bar, two extensions and a blow-mould case. The material line only says metal, and the listing asks about an impact driver without answering. The bullet says 16 metric sockets and then prints 15 sizes from 22 mm to 50 mm, including 42, 45 and 48 mm, which reviewers wanted because a 1/2 in set often stops short of them. amazon.co.uk shows 4.0 from 46 reviews. One reviewer used it on Mercedes van hub nuts and a Citroen Berlingo, and said the T-bar did not bend when a scaffold tube was added. That pipe is the improvisation HSE leaflet INDG229 tells workplaces not to use, so it is a report, not a method. Other reviews say the ratchet slips, or that it fell apart on the third use, and that the case does not hold the parts. One report says the ratchet stayed tight at 260 lb/ft on a 46 mm socket, which is that reviewer’s figure rather than a Hilka rating.

Pros

  • Reversible ratchet and sliding T-bar named in the bullets
  • 42 mm, 45 mm and 48 mm are on the printed list
  • Reviewers used it on van hub nuts up to about 7.5 tonnes
  • Polished hand set, rather than a black impact claim

Cons

  • Ratchet slip, and one ratchet that came apart on a third use
  • Steel grade is not stated
  • 16 sockets claimed, 15 sizes printed
  • The impact-driver question is left unanswered
  • Reviews say the case does not hold the parts firmly

Best for: You have no impact gun and you want a polished set with a T-bar for occasional van hex nuts up to 50 mm.

Less suitable: An impact wrench, or frequent use if you need a ratchet that reviewers expect to last.

Common questions

Can this Hilka set be used on an impact driver?

The listing asks and does not answer. The bullets describe a polished set with a ratchet and a T-bar, and the material line only says metal.

Which odd sizes are printed?

The printed list includes 42 mm, 45 mm and 48 mm, and stops at 50 mm. It says 16 sockets and then prints 15 sizes.

What do reviewers say about the ratchet?

One report says it stayed tight at 260 lb/ft. Others say it slips, or that it fell apart on the third use. One reviewer says the first crack belongs on the T-bar.

KATSU 26-piece 3/4 in socket set 420462

Rank 9

KATSU 26-piece 3/4 in socket set 420462

∼£70

Our view

The KATSU 420462 lists 20 sockets from 21 mm to 65 mm and a blow-moulded case at £69.99, and the title also claims a 24-tooth ratchet and 26 pieces. The steel line is carbon steel with a black oxide finish, while the title says impact. Across 65 amazon.co.uk reviews it scores 3.9, the lowest star line here, from 28 saved review bodies. A 36 mm socket removed a Citroen axle nut, though that reviewer found it slightly large and had to keep side pressure on it. Several accounts describe bent bars, a slipping or tooth-stripped ratchet, and a stone painted into the largest socket. One UK reviewer wrote that the sockets are ordinary sockets painted black. The 65 mm figure is on the printed list. The review record is why that reach does not make this the set to start with.

Pros

  • Printed list runs to 65 mm, including 55, 60 and 65 mm
  • 65 reviews, so the faults are not a single anecdote
  • Blow-moulded case named in the bullets
  • Some buyers liked the unused set as a wide selection

Cons

  • Carbon steel under an impact title
  • Bent bars, and a ratchet that slips or loses teeth, in more than one review
  • Largest socket arrived with a stone painted over, in one report
  • 3.9 from 65 reviews
  • The title names a ratchet the bullets do not list

Best for: You need a printed size past 55 mm and you will treat the bars as light-duty.

Less suitable: An impact gun, daily truck work, or anyone who reads black paint as proof of an impact socket.

Common questions

What steel does 420462 state?

Carbon steel, heat treated and black oxide coated. The title still says impact.

Does the bullet list include the ratchet?

The title says a 24-tooth ratchet and 26 pieces. The bullets list 20 sockets and a blow-moulded case, and do not name the ratchet.

What failures show up in the reviews?

Reviewers report bent bars, a slipping or tooth-stripped ratchet, a stone painted into the largest socket, missing sockets, and a UK reviewer who says the sockets are ordinary sockets painted black.

How we compared

Nine 3/4 socket sets on amazon.co.uk were scored from the saved listings and review notes. There was no lab and no torque bench. Each score is out of 100: the star line, the size of the review sample, what the saved reviews describe, and how complete the listing is for the price. The highest score is the top pick. The highest value part among the other sets is the best value. A millimetre, a steel name or a pound figure is the figure the listing prints.

1

Star rating

35%

The amazon.co.uk star rating divided by 5, then scaled to 35 points. Halves round up. The stars are the UK listing line, not a workshop test.

2

Review sample

20%

Up to 20 points for how many ratings the listing shows. Sixty or more ratings score higher than a handful. A 5.0 from one review does not outrank a larger sample.

3

Use in the saved reviews

30%

Up to 30 points from the saved review notes only: whether a job is named, and whether a socket, bar or ratchet failed. A named fastener can add points. Repeated bends, a loose square or paint against a laser claim subtract.

4

Value in this set

15%

Up to 15 points for the shelf price and for listing facts that help you buy: printed sizes, a named steel, depth, 6-point, a case, and a ratchet or sliding bar in the bullets. A thin sample, or impact in the title with chromium-vanadium or carbon steel, subtracts.

3/4 socket set buying guide

Start with the square, then the steel, then the printed millimetres. A 3/4 socket set is for large or seized fasteners, not for a routine wheel change. Chrome molybdenum belongs on an impact gun. A polished socket, chromium-vanadium or carbon steel belongs on a ratchet or a T-bar. Piece count does not tell you whether 46 mm is in the box. A DIN or ANSI sentence without a standard number is not a British Standard test.

What is a 3/4 socket set?

A 3/4 socket set is a collection of sockets on a 3/4 inch square drive, about 19 mm across, usually with metric openings. You buy one when a smaller drive stops short of the fastener: hub and axle nuts, crank bolts, tractor and plant work, and some commercial vehicles. Everyday car-wheel changes rarely need this drive. A workshop that already has a 3/4 inch impact gun, or a long breaker bar, often does. No UK law requires a private person to own a 3/4 inch impact socket.

Best for

  • A workshop that already has a 3/4 inch impact gun
  • Occasional van or plant hex nuts, with a sliding bar if you have no gun

Not ideal for

  • Everyday wheel changes that a smaller drive already covers
  • Grooved axle nuts, or an opening that is not on the printed list

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Buying on piece count

A 26-piece title can hide a short socket list, a missing ratchet, or sizes that are only a span. Read the millimetres. A missing 46 mm or 50 mm is the reason to leave the box.

  2. 2

    Skipping the steel line

Impact on the title does not set the steel. Chromium-vanadium and carbon steel are hand-tool grades on the usual split. Chrome molybdenum and a black phosphate finish point to a gun. Black paint is not proof of an impact socket.

  3. 3

Cracking the nut on the ratchet

The sliding bar is what breaks the nut free. The ratchet only spins it once it has moved. HSE leaflet INDG229 tells workplaces not to slip a pipe over the bar. If the bar is bending, stop.

What to weigh up

Drive, steel and the tool

High

The square must be 3/4 inch. Mixing that up with the nut size buys the wrong box. A 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch adapter spins a larger socket, and the smaller square stays the weak link. Drive size is not a torque rating. Chrome molybdenum and a black phosphate finish point to an impact gun. Chromium-vanadium, carbon steel or a polished socket is for a ratchet, a T-bar or a torque wrench. Toolstation says standard sockets must not go on power tools because they can shatter.

Sizes, depth and the first crack

High

Read the printed millimetres. These sets often start around 17 mm or 19 mm and run to 50 mm, 55 mm, or a claimed 65 mm. A missing size matters more than piece count. A title span such as 22–50 mm, with no list, does not prove that every step is in the box. Shallow sockets fit where the length would foul. Deep sockets reach a long stud and, as a rule of thumb, are about twice as long, so overtightening is easier. A loose square can drop a socket at height.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A 3/4 inch impact gun

You already have a 3/4 inch impact gun and you need deep chrome-molybdenum sockets up to 41 mm. The CASOMAN deep set, about £61.97, is 4.9 from 78 reviews and includes a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch adapter. Check that the socket stays on the anvil. It stops at 41 mm.

Van or 7.5 tonne hex nuts

You need shallow sockets through 55 mm for hex hub nuts, and you have an impact gun. The CASOMAN shallow set, about £60.27, prints 15 sizes from 17 mm to 55 mm. Saved reviews name a 7.5 tonne job and an HGV workshop note. There is no ratchet in the bullets, and a grooved axle profile is a different tool.

A ratchet and a T-bar

You have no impact gun and you want a polished hand set. The Hilka 04102102, about £76.95, names a reversible ratchet and a sliding T-bar, and prints 42 mm, 45 mm and 48 mm. The steel grade is only metal. Reviewers also report a ratchet that slips or came apart.

Common questions about 3/4 socket sets

Which 3/4 socket set is the top pick in this comparison?
In this comparison the top pick is the CASOMAN 13-piece deep set, about £61.97, with 4.9 from 78 amazon.co.uk reviews. It lists deep chrome-molybdenum sockets from 17 mm to 41 mm plus a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch adapter. Reviewers describe crank-bolt work, and no saved review reports a broken socket. One review says the square can drop a socket at height, and the list stops at 41 mm. Nothing here was torque-tested, so this is not a claim that it is the safest set in the UK.
How much does a 3/4 socket set cost?
On the amazon.co.uk pages saved for this comparison, the nine sets run from about £55.96 to about £85.72. About £56 to £63 is sockets only. About £70 to £77 is where a ratchet appears on these pages. The dearest set here is about £85.72 and adds 1 inch parts. Outside these nine, Sealey Premier AK8892M was £239.94 including VAT on sealey.co.uk and £208.60 on amazon.co.uk. Price is not proof of a BS ISO 1711-2 test.
What should you check before you buy a 3/4 socket set?
Check four things in this order. The square must be 3/4 inch, because a 1/2 inch adapter leaves the smaller square as the weak link. Match the steel to the tool: chrome molybdenum for an impact gun, chromium-vanadium or a polished socket for a ratchet. Read every millimetre, not the piece count. Then see whether a sliding bar is in the box. That bar cracks the nut. The ratchet only spins it free once it has moved.
Should you buy impact sockets or hand sockets?
Buy impact sockets if you have a 3/4 inch impact gun. Chrome molybdenum and a black phosphate finish point that way. Buy a polished hand set, with a ratchet and a sliding T-bar, if you will not use a gun. Do not put a standard hand socket on a power tool. Toolstation says they can shatter. A title that says impact while the steel line says chromium-vanadium or carbon steel is a conflict, not a rating. The split is set out in the impact or hand sockets guide.
Will a general 3/4 socket set undo an HGV axle nut?
A general 6-point set can fit a hex hub nut if that exact millimetre is in the box. Reviewers of sets in this comparison report van and 7.5 tonne jobs. That is not a rating for HGV wheel torque. The torque figure belongs in the vehicle manual. Grooved or 8-point profiles for a named Scania, MAN or Mercedes axle need a specialist socket. A set that stops at 55 mm does not include hub tools around 80 mm to 100 mm.
Does meets DIN or meets ANSI mean a British Standard test?
No. On these listings that sentence has no standard number, so it is a seller line. BS ISO 2725-2:2017 covers dimensions of machine-operated impact sockets. BS ISO 1711-2:2019 covers hardness and a minimum torsional strength test, not a full endurance test. None of the nine listings cites those numbers. Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 9 judges quality against the description and the price. Do not treat black paint as proof of an impact socket.
When should you stop and call a professional?
Stop if you do not have the torque procedure for that fastener, if the nut is a named axle profile rather than a hexagon, if the bar is bending, or if you are about to slip a pipe over the bar. HSE leaflet INDG229 tells workplaces to scrap slipping spanners and not to improvise pipe extensions. At work, PUWER 1998 regulation 4 requires suitable equipment used only for suitable operations. If the vehicle is not properly supported, do not continue.
How is a 3/4 socket set different from a 1/2 inch set?
The drive is larger, about 19 mm across the square, so the set is for large or seized fasteners rather than everyday wheel nuts. A 1/2 inch set often stops before openings such as 42 mm, 45 mm and 48 mm, which is why a van hub nut sends people to 3/4 inch. The larger drive is not itself a torque rating. If your fasteners still fit a 1/2 inch square, start with a 1/2 inch socket set instead of buying this drive by habit.

Our verdict

In this nine-listing set the top pick is the CASOMAN 13-piece deep set, about £61.97, with 4.9 from 78 reviews. It lists deep chrome-molybdenum sockets from 17 mm to 41 mm, and reviewers describe crank-bolt work. One review says the square can drop a socket at height, and the list stops at 41 mm. The best value is the CASOMAN 15-piece shallow set, about £60.27, with 4.9 from 28 reviews, when you want sizes through 55 mm and you already have a 3/4 inch gun. Neither result is a lab test, and neither is a rating for HGV wheel torque.
