Chisel honing guide comparison 2026

The best chisel honing guides, compared.

Top pick: Oiieco chisel sharpening kit Best value: Gohelper honing guide kit – Highest value part among the other rows: a gauge-and-fixture kit at about £29.99, 4.6 from 520 reviews, with the stone excluded in the title. Updated October 2026.

A chisel honing guide holds a chisel or a plane iron at a set bevel on a flat stone. In the UK you buy one when freehand honing changes the angle, rounds the bevel, or leaves the edge out of square. The jig does not remove steel. You still need a flat abrasive, a lapped back, and the burr taken off flat. A suitable guide clamps the blade and states the width it will take. A side clamp sets the angle by projection or by a stepped block. A three-piece kit adds a gauge and a fixture. A magnetic finder only shows a bubble and does not hold the blade. Check that a short blade can reach the projection, and that a stone is in the box. A 25° primary and a 30° hone are workshop practice, not a British Standard. Keep your hands behind the edge, keep the stone still, and keep the roller on the abrasive. Width, length and the box contents are in the [chisel honing guide buying guide](/hub/hand-tools/chisel-honing-guide/sub/chisel-honing-guide-buying-guide).

The best chisel honing guides in detail

Oiieco chisel sharpening kit

Rank 1

Oiieco chisel sharpening kit

∼£29

Our view

The Oiieco kit is a three-piece jig, with a guide, an angle gauge, and a fixture, claimed for blades from 0.1 to 2.8 inches, at £28.99. The star line is 5.0 from two ratings, and the saved listing has no review text, so that figure is a sample of two. The instructions tell you to roll the jig on your own whetstone, and a stone is not stated as included. The body is described as anodised aluminium and stainless steel, at 500 g. A grit field says Fine, with no grit pair in the bullets. Two ratings cannot tell you whether the extended roller stays square on a narrow chisel. Treat the 5.0 as a listing line, not as a workshop verdict.

Pros

  • Guide, gauge, and fixture in one box
  • Width claimed at 0.1–2.8 inches
  • Anodised aluminium and stainless steel named

Cons

  • Only two ratings, and no review text
  • Stone not stated as included
  • No degree range printed on this listing

Best for: You want the three-piece layout and you will judge the clamp yourself.

Less suitable: You want a review count you can lean on before you pay about £28.99.

The star line is 5.0 from 2 ratings. The saved listing has no review text.

Gohelper honing guide kit

Rank 2

Gohelper honing guide kit

∼£30

Our view

The Gohelper kit pairs a guide, an angle gauge, and a positioning fixture for blades from 0.1 to 2.8 inches, and the title says the sharpening stone is not included, at £29.99. It scores 4.6 from 520 amazon.co.uk reviews, which is a large sample next to the two-rating kits in the same shape. You roll the extended roller on a stone you already own. One buyer did not receive the angle tester, was offered a refund, and kept the guide because the clamp itself worked. The components field says one honing guide while the bullets list the guide, the gauge, and the fixture, so check the parcel against the bullets. It weighs 508 g, in anodised aluminium and stainless steel. Short or butt chisels are not given a yes or a no on the listing.

Pros

  • Stone explicitly excluded in the title
  • 4.6 from 520 reviews
  • Extended roller and a positioning block
  • Width claimed at 0.1–2.8 inches

Cons

  • One review missed the angle tester
  • Components field says one guide; bullets say three pieces
  • No printed degree steps
  • Short chisels are not confirmed

Best for: You already own a stone and want a gauge-and-block kit with hundreds of ratings.

Less suitable: You need a stone in the box, or a guide the maker has cleared for butt chisels.

Saker honing guide with stone

Rank 3

Saker honing guide with stone

∼£32

Our view

This Saker listing pairs the off-centre roller with a 400/1000 plate and says it is for short chisels and planes, at £32.39. It scores 4.5 from 811 reviews, the strongest star line among the roller guides that have hundreds of ratings. Reviews describe a double-sided 400 and 1000 plate, while the five bullets still read like the guide alone. Buyers say the plate is short, so the roller runs off the end, and that the paper angle scale will not last. Several want a finer face than 1000. Width is 0.2–2.55 inches. The model number and the Best Sellers Rank line match the guide-only listing, which is a messy catalogue pair. The plate is a coarse face and a medium face, not a polish.

Pros

  • 4.5 from 811 reviews
  • 400/1000 plate described by reviewers
  • Off-centre roller claimed for short chisels
  • Width printed as 0.2–2.55 inches

Cons

  • Plate is short, so the roller runs off
  • Paper angle scale wears out
  • 1000 is not a fine polish
  • Bullets do not name the plate the title sells

Best for: You want a roller and a 400/1000 plate in one order and you can live with a short plate.

Less suitable: You need a long bench stone, a numbered degree block, or a grit finer than 1000.

Common questions

Which grits are in this Saker kit?

The title says a fine/coarse plate at 400/1000. Reviews describe a double-sided 400 and 1000 plate. The five bullets do not name the grit pair.

Is the Saker kit sold for short chisels?

Yes. The title says short chisels and planes, with the same off-centre roller claim as the guide-only listing, at 0.2–2.55 inches.

What do reviewers want that is not in the Saker kit?

A finer face than 1000. They also say the plate is short, so the roller runs off the end, and that the paper angle scale will not last.

Pindex honing guide with stone

Rank 4

Pindex honing guide with stone

∼£27

Our view

Pindex clamps the blade and includes a removable dual-sided diamond plate at 400 and 1000, with a stated maximum width of 60 mm, at £26.59. The star line is 4.3 from five reviews, including buyers in Italy and France, so this is not a large UK sample. No degree steps are printed. The bullets claim a consistent angle from the clamp and a widened roller. The plate is a coarse face plus a 1000 face, which is not a polish grit. The base is polypropylene, the body is anodised aluminium, and the kit weighs 480 g. Kitchen knives are also named for the stone, which is a different edge from a mortise chisel.

Pros

  • 400 and 1000 diamond plate in the box
  • 60 mm maximum width stated
  • Removable plate and a non-slip base

Cons

  • Only five reviews
  • No degree marks
  • 1000 is not a fine polish
  • Also marketed for kitchen knives

Best for: You want a clamp and a coarse-to-medium plate together, and 60 mm covers your irons.

Less suitable: You want a 25° or 30° stop, or a review count in the hundreds.

Faithfull honing guide

Rank 5

Faithfull honing guide

Our view

The Faithfull FAIHG is an Eclipse-pattern side clamp for straight-edge chisels, bevel-edge chisels, and plane irons, from 3 mm to 67 mm, at £8.15. Across 2,240 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.2, which is the largest sample of a clamp in this set. On the chisel jaws, 30 mm of projection is 30° and 40 mm is 25°. On the plane jaws, 38 mm is 30° and 50 mm is 25°. The box is the guide only, for oil, water, or diamond stones you already own. Reviewers say the small wheel can rock, thick paint in the jaws can stop the blade sitting square, and some thick chisels do not clamp. Larger plane blades are the use buyers praise. The bullets say a five-year warranty and the warranty field says one year, so quote both.

Pros

  • 3–67 mm, with printed projections for 25° and 30°
  • Guide only, for a stone you already own
  • 4.2 from 2,240 reviews
  • about £8.15

Cons

  • Narrow roller can rock
  • Paint in the jaws, and some thick chisels will not sit square
  • Warranty bullet says five years; the field says one year
  • No stone in the box

Best for: You already own a flat stone and want the Eclipse clamp with the largest review file here.

Less suitable: You need a wide roller, a butt chisel that cannot reach the projection, or a stone in the parcel.

Is a stone included with the Faithfull honing guide?

No. The included component is the honing guide. The listing says it works on oil, water, and diamond stones.

The small wheel can rock, thick paint in the jaws can stop the blade sitting square, and some thick chisels do not clamp. Larger plane blades are the use buyers praise.

Saker off-centre honing guide

Rank 6

Saker off-centre honing guide

∼£19

Our view

The Saker off-centre guide is sold for short woodworking chisels, with a wide roller and a printed width of 0.2–2.55 inches, at £18.76. Across 465 amazon.co.uk ratings the line is 4.2. Buyers praise that wide roller for stopping the blade rocking, which is the usual complaint about a narrow wheel. The same reviews report jaw play, a skewed edge, and a roller that seized on water-stone paste. The components line lists a chisel set and a whetstone, while the title and the five bullets describe the guide. The angle is set by how far the blade projects, and no degrees are printed on the jig. It weighs 454 g, and the bullets say aluminium alloy while the material field says alloy steel.

Pros

  • Wide off-centre roller, praised for less rock
  • Width printed as 0.2–2.55 inches
  • Title aimed at short chisels
  • 4.2 from 465 ratings at about £18.76

Cons

  • Jaw play and skewed edges in reviews
  • Roller seized on water-stone paste
  • Components line conflicts with a guide-only title
  • Projection only, with no degree marks

Best for: You want a mid-price roller for shorter chisels and you already own a stone.

Less suitable: You need a printed 25° or 30° stop, or a listing whose box contents match the title.

The included-components line says a chisel set, a whetstone, and the honing guide. The title and the five bullets describe the guide and do not describe a stone.

Buyers praise the wide roller for stopping rock. Others report jaw play, a skewed edge, and a roller that seized on water-stone paste.

Trend honing guide DWS/HG/SET

Rank 7

Trend honing guide DWS/HG/SET

∼£25

Our view

The Trend DWS/HG/SET is a wide-roller clamp with a setting block at 25°, 30°, 35°, and 40°, at £24.95 on amazon.co.uk. It scores 4.1 from 566 reviews. Chisels are listed at 10–32 mm and plane irons up to 60.3 mm, and the listing says it is not suitable for firmer chisels or short-blade butt chisels. The title reads like a diamond sharpening set. The bullets ask for a diamond bench stone at least 63 mm by 178 mm, and UK reviews say the stone was not in the box. The wide roller is why buyers step up from a narrow wheel, though narrow chisels can still skew. Do not copy a Faithfull projection in millimetres onto this block.

Pros

  • Degree stops at 25°, 30°, 35°, and 40°
  • Wide roller
  • 4.1 from 566 reviews
  • Chisel and plane widths printed

Cons

  • Title suggests a set; reviews say no stone
  • Firmer and butt chisels excluded
  • Needs a diamond stone at least 63 mm by 178 mm
  • Narrow chisels can still skew

Best for: You want the angle on a block and a wide roller, and you already own a long enough diamond stone.

Less suitable: Your chisels are short butt or firmer chisels, or you are buying because the title sounds like a stone is included.

SHARPAL 194H angle guide

Rank 8

SHARPAL 194H angle guide

Our view

The SHARPAL 194H is a 7.6 g plastic magnetic finder with a bubble from 15° to 45°, at £8.99. It does not clamp a chisel and it does not roll on the stone. The star line is 4.0 from 3,738 reviews, and those reviews are mostly about knives. Buyers say it helps a consistent angle on larger knives and falls off thin blades. A few mention chisels. The item highlight calls it a chisel and plane-iron guide as well as a knife finder, while the bullets describe the magnetic knife tool. There is no blade-width figure. A knife angle on this bubble is the wrong setting to copy onto a mortise chisel.

Pros

  • Bubble from 15° to 45°
  • 7.6 g and magnetic
  • about £8.99
  • Large review count for knife use

Cons

  • Does not clamp or roll
  • Reviews are mostly knives
  • Falls off thin blades
  • Highlight and bullets disagree about chisels

Best for: You hone knives freehand and want a bubble, not a woodworking clamp.

Less suitable: You need a jig that holds a chisel or a plane iron square on a stone.

GOZEEOSX honing guide kit

Rank 9

GOZEEOSX honing guide kit

∼£27

Our view

GOZEEOSX sells a guide, a base, and a gauge marked from 10° to 45°, with a claim that the clamp sits at 90° to the rail, at £26.99. Only two UK reviews sit behind the 4.0 line. One novice could hold an angle. The other found the primary bevel and the micro-bevel hard to tell apart on the gauge, then set 25° and 30°. Width is printed as 0.1–2.8 inches, the roller is extended stainless steel, and a stone is not stated. Weight is 550 g in one place and 0.5 kg in a bullet, and two knurled screws are the clamp. The degree range is printed, and the evidence that the jaws repeat it is those two reviews.

Pros

  • Gauge printed from 10° to 45°
  • Width claimed at 0.1–2.8 inches
  • Clamp claimed square to the rail

Cons

  • Only two reviews
  • Primary and micro-bevel hard to separate on the gauge
  • Stone not stated
  • Weight given as both 550 g and 0.5 kg

Best for: You want numbered degrees on a gauge and you accept a sample of two reviews.

Less suitable: You want hundreds of ratings, or a stone in the same parcel.

Dioche chisel sharpening kit

Rank 10

Dioche chisel sharpening kit

∼£57

Our view

Dioche is the dearest row here at £56.59, listed as a jig plus a whetstone, with one bullet saying 1000 on one side and 6000 on the other. The sentences around those figures are truncated, and the material field says corundum while a bullet mentions aluminium alloy. The star line is 3.6 from four ratings, and the file has no review text. No blade width is printed. The parcel is listed at 2.24 kg and 35 × 20 × 12 cm, with two items, which does not by itself prove a usable guide. That price is not a specialist registration jig, and four ratings are not evidence of a finer edge. Fit is uncertain.

Pros

  • A bullet names 1000 and 6000
  • Two items listed in the parcel
  • A heavier box than the roller guides

Cons

  • about £56.59 with garbled copy
  • 3.6 from four ratings and no review text
  • No blade width
  • Material field and bullets do not agree

Best for: You already have a clearer source for the same grit pair and you are not using this page as the specification.

Less suitable: You want a width, a degree, and a review count before you pay the highest price in the set.

Common questions

What grits does the Dioche listing print?

One bullet says 1000 on one side and 6000 on the other. The grit field says coarse/extra fine. The sentences around those figures are truncated.

No. One bullet says the jig is for various chisels and does not print a width.

Gugxiom honing guide with stone

Rank 11

Gugxiom honing guide with stone

∼£30

Our view

Gugxiom sells a honing guide with a 400 and 1000 stone, and the title names short chisels and planes, at £29.82. It scores 3.3 from four reviews. One buyer found holes out of line, a poor roller, and a screw hole with no thread, and another found 1000 grit too coarse for a fine edge. A review lists a short instruction sheet, the guide, a small Allen key, and the plate in a plastic base. No millimetre range is printed, so width is whatever the left and right screws will hold. The angle is projection, with no degrees, and carving tools are asked on the page and not answered. Four reviews are enough to show assembly faults and not enough to show a reliable short-chisel jig.

Pros

  • 400 and 1000 plate named
  • Title claims short chisels and planes
  • One review itemises the box

Cons

  • 3.3 from four reviews
  • Misaligned holes, a poor roller, and an unthreaded screw hole
  • No width printed
  • 1000 left one buyer short of a fine edge

Best for: You are comparing stone-in-the-box kits and you will inspect the threads before you hone.

Less suitable: You want a square clamp with hundreds of ratings, or a grit finer than 1000.

Does the Gugxiom guide name a width?

No millimetre range is printed. Width is adjusted by loosening the left and right screws. The title says short chisels and planes.

What failed in the Gugxiom reviews?

One buyer found holes out of line, a poor roller, and a screw hole with no thread. Another found 1000 grit too coarse for a fine edge.

HechoVinen honing guide kit

Rank 12

HechoVinen honing guide kit

∼£29

Our view

HechoVinen lists a guide, an angle gauge, and a fixture for blades from 0.1 to 2.8 inches, at £28.89. The saved listing has a price and no star line, and it contains no reviews, so there is no buyer opinion to quote. The steps say to roll the jig on your own whetstone, and a stone is not stated as included. The body is aluminium alloy and stainless steel, listed at 800 g, which is heavier than the Gohelper kit in the same shape. No degree range is printed. A Best Sellers Rank is a catalogue position, not a test of the clamp. You would be buying the photograph of a three-piece jig.

Pros

  • Three pieces named: guide, gauge, and fixture
  • Width claimed at 0.1–2.8 inches
  • Aluminium alloy and stainless steel named

Cons

  • No star line and no reviews
  • Stone not stated
  • No degree range
  • 800 g, with no user check of the clamp

Best for: You already know this pattern from another kit and you are replacing a lost gauge.

Less suitable: This is your first honing guide and you want reviews before you spend about £28.89.

How we compared

Twelve chisel honing guide listings on amazon.co.uk were scored from the shelf prices, stars and review counts in the display file, taken from the listings of 19 October 2026. There was no lab hone and no angle check of our own. A millimetre or a degree is the figure the listing or the maker’s sheet prints. If the title and the reviews disagree about a stone, the score does not invent a winner. The score is 0–100 from stars, sample size, fit for a chisel or plane iron, and value. The highest score is the top pick. The highest value part among the other rows is the best value, so the two marks do not land on the same listing.

1

Stars

30%

The amazon.co.uk rating divided by 5, times 30, rounded to the nearest whole number. Halves round up. A listing with no rating line scores 0.

2

Sample

25%

1,000 or more ratings score 25, 400–999 score 18, 100–399 score 12, 20–99 score 6, 1–19 score 3, and no rating line scores 0.

3

Fit

30%

A clamp with a printed width or an angle method starts higher than a magnetic bubble. Deductions cover no clamp, a stone-in-the-box conflict, repeated skew, rock, a seized roller or a failed thread, and garbled selling copy. The part is capped at 30.

4

Value

15%

A shelf price of £15 or under scores more than a price over £40. A larger rating sample adds a little, as does a clear guide-only listing or a named grit pair the file does not contradict. A rating under 4.0, or no clamp, reduces the part. Capped at 15.

Chisel honing guide buying guide

Choose the mechanism, then the width and the blade length, then whether a stone is in the box, then the angle method. Price and stars come after those checks. The notes below follow that order for a UK bench, using maker sheets and the amazon.co.uk listings scored on 19 October 2026. None of the scores is a lab hone or a measured bevel.

What is a chisel honing guide?

A chisel honing guide holds a chisel or plane iron at a set bevel on a flat stone. You use one when freehand work changes the angle, rounds the bevel, or leaves the edge out of square. The jig does not remove steel. You still need a flat abrasive, a lapped back, and the burr taken off flat. The usual types are a side clamp, a wide-roller clamp with a stepped block, a gauge-and-fixture kit, an off-centre roller often sold with a plate, and a magnetic finder that does not clamp.

Best for

  • Bench chisels and plane irons when you already own a flat stone
  • A repeatable bevel when freehand honing rounds the edge or takes it out of square
  • Short chisels only after the blade can reach the projection

Not ideal for

  • A magnetic bubble when you need the blade clamped square
  • Firmer or short butt chisels in a guide that excludes them
  • A 400/1000 plate when you need a fine polish

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Copying one projection onto another guide

Faithfull’s chisel jaws use 30 mm for 30° and 40 mm for 25°. The plane jaws use 38 mm for 30° and 50 mm for 25°. Those millimetres do not belong on the Trend block, which is marked 25°, 30°, 35° and 40°. A thick blade changes the result. Using the plane jaw on a chisel is the same class of mistake.

  2. 2

Buying a set and finding no stone

A title can read like a diamond sharpening set while the bullets ask for a stone at least 63 mm by 178 mm, and UK reviews say the stone was not in the box. A components line can also name a whetstone that the bullets never describe. That is a description question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a reason to assume the grit pair arrived.

  3. 3

    Treating 400/1000 as a polish

A 400/1000 pair is coarse plus medium, as a rule of thumb, not a measured polish. Honing a butt chisel that cannot reach the projection will not hold the angle the gauge suggests. A large star line that is mostly knife users is not a verdict on a roller jig.

What to weigh up

Mechanism, width and length

High

A side clamp sets the angle by how far the blade projects, or by a stepped block. A three-piece kit adds a gauge and a fixture. A magnetic finder only shows a bubble while you hone freehand. It does not clamp and it does not roll, so it is a different tool from a jig. Read the width the jaws claim. Faithfull states 3 mm to 67 mm. Trend states chisels from 10 mm to 32 mm and plane irons to 60.3 mm, and excludes firmer and short butt chisels. Several kits print 0.1 to 2.8 inches.

Stone, angle and roller

High

Some listings are guide-only and say so. Trend’s bullets need a diamond stone at least 63 mm by 178 mm, but UK reviews say the stone was missing. A components line that lists a whetstone while the bullets describe the guide is a conflict. A 400/1000 plate in the box is coarse plus medium, as a rule of thumb, not a polish. A bullet that says 1000/6000 still has to be readable, and garbled copy is not a specification. Keep the angle methods apart.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Bench chisels and a stone you own

You already have bench chisels, plane irons and a flat stone. The Faithfull honing guide is guide-only, from 3 mm to 67 mm, at about £8.15, with 4.2 from 2,240 amazon.co.uk reviews. On the chisel jaws, 30 mm of projection is 30° and 40 mm is 25°. Reviewers say the narrow roller can rock.

A gauge and block with a large sample

You want a guide, an angle gauge and a positioning block, and you already own the stone. The Gohelper kit claims 0.1–2.8 inches and the title says the stone is not included, at about £29.99, with 4.6 from 520 reviews. One buyer did not receive the angle tester. Short chisels are not confirmed.

Short chisels and a plate in the box

You want an off-centre roller and a 400/1000 plate for short chisels and planes. The Saker kit is about £32.39, with 4.5 from 811 reviews. Reviews say the plate is short, so the roller runs off the end, and that 1000 is not a fine polish. The angle is projection.

Common questions about chisel honing guides

What does a chisel honing guide do?
A chisel honing guide holds a chisel or a plane iron at a set bevel on a flat stone. It does not remove steel. You still need a flat abrasive, a lapped back, and the burr taken off flat. A clamp or a roller jig holds the blade. A magnetic bubble only shows an angle while you hone freehand, and it does not clamp. A 25° primary and a 30° hone are workshop practice, not a British Standard.
How much does a chisel honing guide cost in the UK?
On amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026, the guide-only rows in this set sit around £8 to £15. Mid-price jigs and kits run from about £18 to £35. The dearest row is about £57, and that price is not a specialist registration jig. A two-rating listing, or a listing with no star line, is not a consensus. Match the width and the box contents before you use price to choose.
What should you check before you buy a chisel honing guide?
Check the mechanism first: a side clamp, a gauge-and-fixture kit, or a magnetic finder that does not clamp. Then check the printed width, and whether a short blade can reach the projection. Then check whether a stone is named in the box, because some titles read like a set when reviews say the stone was missing. A narrow roller can rock a narrow chisel. Hundreds of ratings are stronger evidence than two ratings.
Is a sharpening stone included with a honing guide?
Not always. Some titles say the stone is not included, and you roll the jig on a stone you already own. A wide-roller listing can still ask for a diamond bench stone at least 63 mm by 178 mm, and UK reviews say that stone was not in the box. A 400/1000 plate is coarse plus medium, as a rule of thumb, not a polish. If the title and the components line disagree, treat that as a description question.
Can a roller guide hone a short or butt chisel?
Only if the blade is long enough to reach the projection the angle needs. The Trend listing excludes firmer chisels and short-blade butt chisels. Off-centre rollers are sold for shorter chisels, and you still check the length against the stone. Copying a millimetre setting from the Faithfull jaws onto the Trend block will not give the same angle. A thick blade changes the result on either guide.
Should you use a knife angle finder on a mortise chisel?
No. A magnetic finder from 15° to 45° does not clamp a chisel, and most of its reviews are about knives. A knife angle on that bubble is the wrong setting to copy onto a mortise chisel. If you are choosing the chisel itself, the mortise chisel comparison is a separate page. Ask a toolmaker if the edge is chipped into the shoulder, the back is bent, or the bevel on a laminated chisel is unknown.
When should a professional hone the chisel?
Ask a toolmaker or a tutor if the edge is chipped into the shoulder, the back is bent and you cannot lap it, the chisel is laminated and the bevel is unknown, or you are teaching a first edge in a school or a paid workshop. Keep your hands behind the edge. HSE woodworking standards, including BS EN 847, cover machines and tooling. They do not set a chisel angle, and these jigs have no mains plug.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Faithfull honing guide, an Eclipse-pattern side clamp from 3 mm to 67 mm at about £8.15, with 4.2 from 2,240 amazon.co.uk reviews. It is guide-only. On the chisel jaws, 30 mm of projection is 30° and 40 mm is 25°. Reviewers say the narrow roller can rock. The best value is the Gohelper honing guide kit at about £29.99, with 4.6 from 520 reviews, if you already own a stone and want a gauge and a block. The title says the stone is not included. None of these scores is a lab hone.
