Side clamp vs angle jig honing guide, which to buy

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing how the blade is held, not which brand has the rounder star. A side clamp vs angle jig honing guide choice is two motions. A side clamp sets the angle by how far the blade sticks out. A gauge-and-fixture kit sets the angle on a block, then you clamp and roll. Parallel bench chisels suit the first. A wish to avoid a ruler suits the second. The [chisel honing guide comparison](/hub/hand-tools/chisel-honing-guide) is the twelve-row table, with GBP prices from 19 October 2026. Peter F. read the Faithfull sheet and the Trend manual. We did not run both jigs across one stone. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Side clamp

A side clamp grips the blade from the sides and rolls on a small wheel. Faithfull's FAIHG is the Eclipse-pattern version in this set, at £8.15, with 4.2 from 2,240 reviews, from 3 mm to 67 mm. On the chisel jaws, 30 mm of projection is 30° and 40 mm is 25°. On the plane jaws, 38 mm is 30° and 50 mm is 25°. The box is the guide. The narrow roller can rock a narrow chisel if you lean. You need sides that are parallel and fairly thin. This Faithfull does not supply a gauge. You supply the ruler. A tight jaw is not an angle. The projections are on the how to use a honing guide page, and they must not be copied onto a different jig.

Gauge and fixture

The other motion is a roller, an angle gauge, and a positioning block. In this set that shape is Gohelper, Oiieco, GOZEEOSX, and HechoVinen. They are not one product. Gohelper is £29.99, 4.6 from 520 reviews, and the title says the stone is not included. One buyer missed the angle tester and kept the clamp. Oiieco is 5.0 from two ratings, which is not a larger sample than 520. GOZEEOSX prints 10° to 45° and has two reviews. HechoVinen has no star line. None of the four clearly includes a stone. If you want the fixture with a count you can read, Gohelper is the one. The order of that decision is the buying guide.

The side clamp that already has a block

Trend's DWS/HG/SET sits between the two motions. It is still a clamp, at £24.95, with 4.1 from 566 reviews, and the block is marked 25°, 30°, 35°, and 40°. You do not measure Faithfull's millimetres, and you do not buy a separate gauge that might be missing from a three-piece kit. The roller is wide, which fights the lean, and UK notes still report skew on narrow chisels. Firmer chisels and short-blade butt chisels are excluded. The manual adds 75 mm minimum length at 25° and 7 mm maximum thickness. The title sounds like a diamond set. Reviews say the stone was not in the box. For a full-length parallel chisel, this is the side clamp that already skips the ruler.

Parallel sides, or not

If the sides are parallel, you already own a stone, and you will measure a projection, buy the Faithfull side clamp. If you will not measure, and the blades are full length, buy the Trend block rather than a two-review gauge kit. If you want a separate gauge and fixture, Gohelper is the kit whose review count can carry the sentence, and you still supply the stone. That is not a claim that a fixture cuts a finer edge. Tapered blades fall off that path. A side-gripping fixture has the same limit as Eclipse jaws. The Veritas Mk.II is the registration jig, from about £52 at Axminster in this digest, and it is not an ASIN here. Prices and the skip lines are on the best honing guide for chisels page.

Common questions

What is a side clamp actually gripping?
The sides of the blade, in jaws. On the Faithfull, a middle V takes fully bevelled paring chisels and the lower flat jaws take mortise and part-bevel chisels. The angle is how far the edge projects. Parallel, fairly thin sides are what the jaws expect. A tight screw is not the same thing as a measured angle.
What does the gauge and the positioning block replace?
They replace the ruler. You set a mark on the gauge, register the blade on the block, and then roll. They do not replace the stone. Gohelper says so in the title. Oiieco, GOZEEOSX, and HechoVinen do not state a stone either. You are paying more for the guide so you do not measure millimetres.
Which one is kinder if I do not want a ruler?
The Trend block, if your chisels are full length and not firmers, because the stops are 25°, 30°, 35°, and 40° and the review file has 566 ratings. A three-piece gauge kit is the other way to avoid millimetres. Only Gohelper, at 520 reviews, has a file large enough to lean on. The other kits in that shape have two ratings or none.
Which one suits a narrow chisel that rocks?
A wide roller. Trend's is the wide roller with a real review count. The Eclipse-pattern wheel on the Faithfull is the one that rocks if you lean. An extended roller on a gauge kit is the same idea, with a much smaller sample except for Gohelper. A wide roller reduces the lean. It does not abolish skew.
Do the three-piece kits include a stone?
Gohelper's title says no. The other three do not state one. A stone-in-the-box listing such as the Saker kit is a different mechanism from this gauge-and-fixture comparison. A 400/1000 plate is still a coarse face and a medium face, not a polish you can treat as the last grit.
Will either hold a tapered or Japanese chisel?
Do not count on it. Side clamps want parallel sides, and a side-gripping fixture has the same limit. A registration jig such as the Veritas Mk.II is the usual answer, and it is not one of these ASINs. Forcing a taper into Eclipse jaws skews the edge. Tightening harder does not turn an £8 jaw into that jig.
