Honing guide for chisels and plane irons: how to choose

Updated: 22 October 2026

You already own a bench chisel or a plane iron, and a freehand stroke keeps changing the angle. A honing guide for chisels and plane irons holds the blade while you push a roller along a flat stone. It does not remove steel by itself. Decide in this order: mechanism, then width and length, then whether a stone is already on the bench, then whether the review count can carry the claim. The [chisel honing guide comparison](/hub/hand-tools/chisel-honing-guide) holds the twelve amazon.co.uk listings, with GBP prices from 19 October 2026. Peter F. read those listings. We did not hone a set in a lab. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A star rating does not tell you which mechanism grips the blade. A side clamp, the Eclipse pattern, sets the angle by how far the steel sticks out. Faithfull's FAIHG is that guide, guide only, at £8.15, with 4.2 from 2,240 reviews. Trend's DWS/HG/SET is still a clamp, with the angle as a stop, at £24.95, with 4.1 from 566 reviews. Gohelper adds a gauge and a positioning fixture, and the title says the stone is not included. The SHARPAL 194H only shows a bubble. It does not clamp and it does not roll. That split is the side clamp vs angle jig page.

Width, length, and the stone you own

Width is the number on the blade. Faithfull states 3 mm to 67 mm. Trend states chisels from 10 mm to 32 mm and plane irons up to 60.3 mm, and it excludes firmer chisels and short-blade butt chisels. Several kits print 0.1 to 2.8 inches, about 2.5 mm to 71 mm as a rule of thumb, not a measured jaw. The angle is how far the blade projects past the roller. Trend's manual prints a minimum of 75 mm at 25° and a maximum thickness of 7 mm. Faithfull does not print a minimum length. If your chisels are short, use the honing guide for short chisels. Faithfull's box is the guide. Gohelper's title says the stone is not included. Trend's bullets need a diamond bench stone at least 63 mm by 178 mm, and UK reviews say the stone was not in the box. A 400/1000 pair is a coarse face and a medium face, not a polish. A title that describes a stone the parcel does not contain is a match-to-description question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

What the pound bands are paying for

About £8 to £15 is Faithfull at £8.15. Faithfull's own shop lists the guide at £14.16 including VAT, so the Amazon figure is the lower sticker in this capture. The bullets say five years and the warranty field says one year. Quote both. From about £18 to £35, Gohelper is £29.99 with 4.6 from 520 reviews. Oiieco is 5.0 from two ratings. A perfect line on a tiny sample is not a larger sample than 520 reviews. Dioche at £56.59, with 3.6 from four ratings, is not a Veritas Mk.II. Those specialist jigs sit outside this ASIN set.

Who should leave this page

This page will not name a single winner. If you already own a stone and you want the clamp with the review file, or the block with the wide roller, the best honing guide for chisels page makes those picks and says who should skip each. Projection and the burr are a method, not a buying order. Leave if you wanted a knife finder, or a polish from a 400/1000 plate. A honing angle is not a British Standard.

Common questions

Do I need a guide if I already own a stone?
Yes, if freehand work keeps changing the angle or rounding the bevel. The stone is the abrasive. The guide only holds the blade. Faithfull at £8.15 and Gohelper at £29.99 both assume the stone is already yours. A kit with a plate is a different purchase, and a 400/1000 plate is still not the last grit.
Side clamp, angle block, or a kit with a plate?
Choose the side clamp when the blades are parallel and you will measure a projection. Choose the block when you want 25°, 30°, 35°, or 40° as a stop, which in this set is the Trend. Choose a plate kit when you do not own a stone and you accept a short 400/1000 face. The magnetic finder is none of those three.
What width must it hold?
Measure the widest plane iron and the narrowest chisel you will actually hone. Faithfull prints 3–67 mm. Trend prints 10–32 mm for chisels and 60.3 mm for plane irons. Several kits print 0.1–2.8 inches. A width the jaws will not take is a description problem, not a technique problem.
Will it take a short butt chisel?
Trend says no, including firmer chisels. Saker's titles say short chisels and do not print a minimum length. Faithfull does not print a minimum either, and you still need enough blade to reach 30 mm or 40 mm on the chisel jaws. Length and angle are the same limit.
Why is a two-rating 5.0 not the better buy?
Oiieco's 5.0 is two ratings, with no review text in the file. Gohelper's 4.6 is 520 reviews. Faithfull's 4.2 is 2,240 reviews. A perfect line on a tiny sample cannot outvote a large file that includes complaints about rock, skew, or a missing part.
When is the magnetic finder the wrong product?
When you need the blade clamped and the roller kept on the stone. The SHARPAL 194H shows 15° to 45° on a bubble, weighs about 7.6 g, and the reviews are mostly knives. It falls off thin blades. It will not square a chisel the way a jaw guide does.
