Top pick: Draper 84126 Best value: US Pro AT005 – Highest value part among the other listings: about £28.22, with 40 Nm, 250 rpm, 2.5 cfm and a 1/4 inch BSP inlet stated, and 4.1 from 37 ratings. Updated October 2026.
An air ratchet spins a square drive on compressed air so you can run nuts off without the swing of a spanner. In the UK you buy one when a compressor is in the garage, for a faster rundown on covers, radiators, filters and small-engine fasteners. Snug the nut, then finish a critical fastener with a torque wrench.
You tell a suitable air ratchet by the square, the stated torque at about 90 psi (6.2 bar), the air the compressor must deliver, and whether the head fits the bay. Squares are 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch, matching the socket rather than a power rank. A short head reaches a fastener a long body cannot. Match stated air demand to delivered flow. Tank litres store air. They are not the flow. A 1/4 inch BSP fitting and a 1/4 inch NPT fitting do not seal on each other.
Keep the trigger off until the hose is on, and do not blow compressed air at your skin. Drive, torque and air are set out in the [air ratchet buying guide](/hub/hand-tools/air-ratchet/sub/air-ratchet-buying-guide).

The Draper 84126 is a 3/8 inch ratchet with a stubby yoke, a 4-speed rear regulator and a 1/4 inch BSP inlet on a 360-degree rotating connector. The listing mass is 500 g and the size line is 30 × 4 × 4 cm. It claims a lightweight aluminium housing, a soft-grip handle and a middle exhaust, and the bullets describe radiator, spark plug and pump work. The star line is 5.0 from 3 ratings, and there is no review text, so those stars do not describe a job. Torque, free speed, air consumption and operating pressure are all missing from the listing. Direction change is not named either. The August 2025 manual states 85 Nm, 4 cfm, 1.21 kg and impact sockets only. The 500 g amazon.co.uk mass is not that manual mass, so it is not confirmed here.
Pros
Stubby yoke, 4-speed rear regulator and a middle exhaust
1/4 inch BSP inlet on a 360-degree rotating connector
Aluminium housing and a soft-grip handle claimed
Described for radiator, spark plug and pump work
Cons
Torque, free speed, air consumption and operating pressure not stated on the listing
5.0 from 3 ratings and no review text
Direction change not named
Listing mass of 500 g is not the manual mass
Best for: You want a short Draper 3/8 inch body with a stated BSP inlet and you will read the manual for torque.
Less suitable: A choice you want backed by a written review, or a mass you take from the amazon.co.uk line alone.
The amazon.co.uk page does not. It states a 3/8 inch drive, a stubby yoke, a 4-speed regulator and a 1/4 inch BSP inlet. The August 2025 manual states 85 Nm.
Is there review text?
The star line is 5.0 from 3. There is no review body, so those stars do not describe a job.
The Durlo page lists a 265 mm ratchet with a forward and reverse switch on the head, for small-engine, headlight and filter work. The drive line says a 3/8 inch square and also 10 mm, and torque, free speed and air consumption are all absent. The only rating is 5.0 from one review, marked France on 17 January 2026, and the text is the single word Super. That review names no job and no fault. The listing mass of 0.01 g is not a usable weight for a 265 mm tool, so the mass stays unknown. Country of origin is China, and the page does not itemise a case, oil or sockets. A price near the US Pro AT005 does not make the two listings the same tool.
Pros
265 mm body at about £26.99
Forward and reverse switch on the head
Described for small engines, headlights and filters
Sealed head claimed on the listing
Cons
Drive stated as both 3/8 inch and 10 mm
No torque, free speed, air consumption or usable weight
One French review, the word Super, and no UK text
Best for: You already know which sockets fit this head and you are choosing on the price.
Less suitable: A job that needs a stated torque, a known weight, or a review that describes the work.
The Ingersoll Rand 1105MAX-D2 is a 1/4 inch mini listed at 40.7 Nm in the title and 41 Nm in the torque field, with 300 rpm, 650 g and a length of 7.36 inches. Across 275 amazon.co.uk ratings the line is 4.6, though the early texts are from Sweden, the United States, France, Canada and Belgium. Reviewers call it light enough for tight spaces and say the rundown is fast, and some say they use a speed regulator. One professional user says a previous tool of this type lasted more than 15 years. Torque is described as short of a full-size ratchet, and the trigger is harder to feather than some older tools. Two French reviews report an air leak at the adjustment collar, and one of those ended in a refund because of stock. Air consumption, operating pressure and the inlet thread are not on this row. A UK dealer sheet lists average air use of 3.5 cfm, 20 cfm at free speed, a 1/4 inch NPT inlet and 88.9 dB(A). Those figures are not on this amazon.co.uk row, and that NPT inlet does not seal on a BSP hose.
The Ingersoll Rand 1207MAX-D3 is a 3/8 inch ratchet listed at up to 88 Nm and 1.42 kg, with a forward and reverse collar and a variable speed regulator. The star line is 4.4 from 115 ratings. Two United Kingdom texts call it powerful, if not the fastest, and good quality, while the longer texts are mostly from the United States and Canada. Reviewers mention the twist collar and an adjustable exhaust. The collar is sticky until air is connected, in more than one review, and one user found the inlet blocked by cardboard before the tool made full power. It is heavier than a small ratchet in one review, and an identification tag came off easily in another. Free speed and air consumption are not on this row, and the length field reads 0.38 inches, which is not a usable overall length. A UK seller page lists 275 mm, average air use of 4 cfm and 23 cfm at free speed. Use that length, not the 0.38 inch field.
Pros
Up to 88 Nm on a 3/8 inch drive, at 1.42 kg
4.4 from 115 ratings, including two UK texts that call it powerful and good quality
Forward and reverse collar, variable speed regulator and a feather-touch trigger
Adjustable exhaust on the listing, and mentioned by users
Nickel-plated housing and a composite handle claimed on the listing
Cons
About £216.76, and heavier than a small ratchet in one review
Direction collar sticky until air is connected, in more than one review
Length field of 0.38 inches is not a usable overall length
Free speed and air consumption are not stated on the amazon.co.uk row
Best for: You want the 88 Nm figure in this set on a 3/8 inch drive and you can check the collar once air is connected.
Less suitable: A very tight bay where 1.42 kg gets in the way, or a spec sheet that must quote free speed from the amazon.co.uk row alone.
The Ingersoll Rand 105-D3 is a 3/8 inch ratchet at 34 Nm and 250 rpm, weighing 640 g and measuring 18.5 cm. It has 4.3 from 30 amazon.co.uk ratings, and the review texts are from Canada and the United States, with no United Kingdom body in the file. Reviewers use the small body in tight places, one calls it quieter than the tool it replaced, and one reports daily workshop use when it is oiled. The same file describes it as a 1/4 inch body with a 3/8 inch anvil, and light for sockets much over 13 mm. One review puts the power below the printed 34 Nm, the trigger is called too easy and has no catch, and one professional user says the head or housing comes loose in daily use. Air consumption, pressure and the inlet thread are not stated on this row. The Ingersoll Rand GB page lists 3 cfm average, 18 cfm at free speed and 81.8 dB(A). Those figures are not on the amazon.co.uk row, and the review texts are not British opinion.
Pros
34 Nm, 250 rpm, 640 g and 18.5 cm
Aluminium housing, steel head and a ball-detent anvil
4.3 from 30 ratings
Small body used in tight places in the review texts
Cons
No United Kingdom review body in the file
Power felt below the printed 34 Nm, and the trigger has no catch
Head or housing comes loose in one professional review
Described as light for sockets much over 13 mm
Best for: You want a short 3/8 inch Ingersoll Rand around 34 Nm for access work, and you will keep it oiled.
Less suitable: Sockets much over 13 mm, or a job that needs the 61 Nm or 88 Nm listings in this set.
The US Pro AT005 is a stubby 3/8 inch ratchet at 180 mm and 624 g, listed at 40 Nm and 250 rpm. The page also says 30 ft lb, and average air use is 2.5 cfm at 90 psi through a 1/4 inch BSP inlet. The star line is 4.1 from 37 ratings, and the UK-marked reviews talk about size, speed and noise. Buyers use it on valve covers and timing covers, and they call it fast on fasteners that are not seized. One buyer treats the modest torque as less likely to snap a bolt. It is painfully loud in more than one UK review, and one buyer stopped using it because of the noise. One original unit failed, and the seller sent a replacement the same day. Direction change and speed control are not named. It is the best value in this set because the value part is the highest of the listings that are not the top score.
Pros
Stubby 180 mm body at 624 g, 40 Nm and 250 rpm
2.5 cfm at 90 psi and a 1/4 inch BSP inlet
4.1 from 37 ratings, with UK notes on valve covers and timing covers
Fast on fasteners that are not seized, in those texts
About £28.22
Cons
Painfully loud, and one buyer stopped using it
Not a high-torque tool
One original unit failed before a same-day replacement
Direction change and speed control are not stated
Best for: You need a short 3/8 inch ratchet for covers and fasteners that are not seized, and you already wear hearing protection.
Less suitable: A seized bolt, or a garage where this level of noise is a problem.
The Sealey SA21/S is a 1/2 inch ratchet listed at 61 Nm, with a bullet that also states 45 lb ft, on a 90 psi supply at 5 cfm. It weighs 1.21 kg and is 26.5 cm long, with a hardened steel anvil, a twist reverse and trigger-operated power control. Across 22 amazon.co.uk ratings the line is 4.1, and the file holds three United Kingdom texts. One calls it top quality for workshop use. Another had to strip and relubricate it after it stopped on first use, and it then worked. A third describes the noise as unbearable beside their other air tools and would not use it. Free speed and the inlet thread are not on this row. The Sealey manual states 150 rpm, 95 dB(A), 2.9 m/s² and a 1/4 inch BSP inlet. Quote the manual for those figures. They are not the amazon.co.uk free-speed line.
Pros
1/2 inch drive listed at 61 Nm, with twist reverse
Air supply stated as 90 psi and 5 cfm
Hardened steel anvil and trigger-operated power control
4.1 from 22 ratings and three United Kingdom texts
Cons
Stopped on first use until stripped and relubricated
Noise one UK buyer called unbearable and would not use
Free speed and the inlet thread are not stated on the amazon.co.uk row
Best for: You want a 1/2 inch workshop ratchet around 61 Nm and you will oil it before the first job.
Less suitable: A shared workshop where that noise is a problem, or a first job you cannot interrupt to relubricate.
The Draper 84122 is a 1/2 inch ratchet listed at 85 Nm, with a 4-speed rear regulator, an aluminium housing and a claimed soft-grip handle. The listing mass is 500 g and the length is 0.29 m, and the bullets describe radiator removal and replacement. The star line is 3.0 from one rating, and there is no review text, so that star does not say what failed. Free speed, air consumption, operating pressure and the inlet thread are not on this row. Country of origin is China. The stated 85 Nm sits next to the 88 Nm Ingersoll Rand in this set, at about £39.81 and without that tool's written reviews. The manual states 1.22 kg, so the listing mass of 500 g is not confirmed. The same manual says this is not a torque wrench and that you should use impact sockets, not chrome hand sockets.
Pros
1/2 inch drive with 85 Nm stated
4-speed rear regulator
Aluminium housing claimed, length listed as 0.29 m
Described for radiator removal and replacement
Cons
3.0 from one rating and no review text
Free speed, air consumption, pressure and inlet thread not stated
Direction change not named
Listing mass of 500 g is not the manual mass
Best for: You want a stated 85 Nm on a 1/2 inch Draper and you will judge the tool yourself.
Less suitable: A bay where you need a written review before you connect the hose.
85 Nm, on a 1/2 inch drive, with a 4-speed regulator. Air consumption and the inlet thread are not on this row.
Is there a written review?
The star line is 3.0 from 1. There is no review body, so that star does not say what failed.
How we compared
Eight air ratchets on amazon.co.uk were scored from the star line, the review count, what the review texts describe, and a value part for price and printed figures. The top pick is the highest total. The best value is the highest value part among the other listings. There is no lab test. A newton-metre figure is the figure the listing prints.
1
Star rating
35%
The amazon.co.uk rating divided by 5, then multiplied by 35. A 4.6 contributes 32. A 5.0 still scores 35 on this part, and a thin sample is scored separately.
2
Review sample
20%
200 or more ratings score 12. From 100 to 199 scores 8. From 20 to 99 scores 4. Under 20 scores 1. A single rating cannot outrank a large sample on this part.
3
Use in the reviews
30%
What the review texts describe: tight access, a named job, a fault in more than one review, or no review body at all. Stars with no written review stay low on this part.
4
Value in this set
15%
Shelf price, plus a printed torque, free speed, air figure or named control. A conflicting drive line, or a missing torque, is deducted once. This part names the best value. It does not name the top pick.

Air ratchet buying guide
Use the square you already own, then the stated torque, then the air. The notes below apply those checks to the eight amazon.co.uk listings read on 20 October 2026. Shelf prices and star lines can move. The checks do not.
What is an air ratchet?
An air ratchet is a pneumatic spanner. Compressed air turns a square drive so the socket runs a nut off without the arc of a hand ratchet. UK buyers are home mechanics and workshops that already own a compressor. The stable checks are the job and the stated torque, the square, the length and mass of the head, the air at about 90 psi (6.2 bar), and the inlet thread.
Cover bolts are not the same job as an 80 Nm fastener, and a rusted suspension bolt is a third job again.
Best for
Home mechanics who already own a compressor and 3/8 inch sockets for covers and radiators
Owners of 1/2 inch sockets who have read the noise notes
Workshops that will match inlet thread and free-speed air on the maker sheet
Not ideal for
A fastener you intend to tighten to a wheel-nut figure with this tool
A compressor you judge by tank litres alone
A seized steering, brake or suspension fastener
Mistakes to avoid
1
Buying on tank litres
A tank stores air. It does not tell you the flow the compressor can hold at 90 psi. Match the model's cfm to delivered flow. Do not guess a written scheme for a work receiver from the litre figure either.
2
Mixing BSP and NPT
A 1/4 inch BSP fitting and a 1/4 inch NPT fitting do not seal on each other. Sealey, Draper and US Pro threads that are named are BSP. A UK dealer lists the 1105MAX-D2 as NPT. Check the thread before the hose is made up.
3
Using maximum torque as a wheel-nut setting
A printed maximum is the listing figure at the stated pressure. It is not a wheel-nut torque. The Draper manual says to snug the nut and finish a critical fastener with a hand torque wrench. Trust neither a 0.01 g mass nor a 0.38 inch length when the figure is absurd.
What to weigh up
Job and stated torque
High
Read the newton-metre figure against the fastener, not against the square. Cover bolts, filter housings and small-engine work are a different duty from a rusted suspension bolt. The Draper 84122 listing states 85 Nm and the 84126 listing states none. The August 2025 manual for those two states 85 Nm and says the tool is not a torque wrench. The US Pro AT005 states 40 Nm, and UK reviews use it on valve covers and timing covers, not on seized bolts.
Air, inlet and noise
High
Match the model's air figure to delivered compressor flow at about 90 psi (6.2 bar). Tank litres are storage. The US Pro AT005 states 2.5 cfm at 90 psi through a 1/4 inch BSP inlet. The Sealey SA21/S states 5 cfm at 90 psi. Its manual adds 150 rpm, 95 dB(A) and 2.9 m/s², which the amazon.co.uk row does not print as free speed. A UK dealer sheet for the 1105MAX-D2 lists average air use of 3.5 cfm, 20 cfm at free speed, a 1/4 inch NPT inlet and 88.9 dB(A).
Which option suits you?
Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.
🏠
Home mechanic on covers
You already have a compressor and 3/8 inch sockets, and the jobs are covers and radiators. The US Pro AT005 is about £28.22, with 40 Nm, 250 rpm, 2.5 cfm and a 1/4 inch BSP inlet, and 4.1 from 37 ratings. UK reviews cite valve covers, timing covers and noise. If you look at the Draper 84126, check the manual against the amazon.co.uk mass before you treat 500 g as the tool weight.
You want a 1/2 inch anvil and you can live with the noise notes. The Sealey SA21/S is about £40.53, listed at 61 Nm, 5 cfm and 90 psi, with 4.1 from 22 ratings. Three UK texts cover workshop use, a first-use strip and relube, and noise one buyer called unbearable.
You are spending in the band from about £148 to about £217 and you will match inlet thread and free-speed air on the maker sheet. The Ingersoll Rand 1105MAX-D2 is the top pick on score. A UK dealer lists it as 1/4 inch NPT, which does not seal on a BSP hose. The amazon.co.uk row does not print air consumption.
What should you match on an air ratchet before you buy?
Match the job to a stated torque, then the square to the sockets you own. A cover bolt is not an 80 Nm fastener, and a printed maximum is not a wheel-nut setting. Check head length against the bay, air use against the flow your compressor delivers at about 90 psi (6.2 bar), and the inlet thread against the hose. Tank litres store air. They are not the flow.
How much do these air ratchets cost on amazon.co.uk?
On 20 October 2026 the eight amazon.co.uk shelf prices ran from £26.99 to £216.76. Durlo at £26.99 and the US Pro AT005 at £28.22 are not the same specification: only the US Pro states torque, free speed, air use and a BSP inlet. Draper 84126, Draper 84122 and the Sealey SA21/S sit from £37.71 to £40.53. Three Ingersoll Rand listings sit from £148.03 to £216.76. These are that day's shelf prices, not a market survey.
Is an air ratchet a torque wrench?
No. The Draper manual for the 84122 and the 84126 says you snug the nut, then finish a critical fastener with a hand torque wrench. A printed maximum, including the 85 Nm and 88 Nm lines in this set, is not a wheel-nut setting. Use a torque wrench for that final figure.
Which square drive should you choose?
Cromwell treats 1/4 inch as light duty, 3/8 inch as the usual size, and 1/2 inch as higher air demand. Drive is the socket, not a power rank. In this set a 3/8 inch listing states 88 Nm and a 1/2 inch listing states 61 Nm. Buy the square your sockets already are.
Do BSP and NPT air fittings seal on each other?
No. A 1/4 inch BSP fitting and a 1/4 inch NPT fitting do not seal on each other. Sealey, Draper and US Pro rows that name a thread use 1/4 inch BSP. A UK dealer lists the Ingersoll Rand 1105MAX-D2 as 1/4 inch NPT. Check the thread before the hose is made up.
What do the review samples actually show?
A single five-star word is not evidence of a job. Two Draper rows show stars and no review text, so those stars do not describe the work. Review text from outside the United Kingdom is not British opinion. UK notes on the US Pro mention covers and noise. UK notes on the Sealey mention workshop use, a first-use relube, and noise one buyer would not live with.
When should you stop and call a professional?
Call a professional for a seized steering, brake or suspension fastener, and for torque-to-yield engine bolts. Do the same for a work compressor if you cannot say whether a written scheme applies, and if the tool leaks or throws its socket. A battery tool with no hose is a different comparison: the cordless ratchet comparison.
Our verdict
The top pick is the Ingersoll Rand 1105MAX-D2. It has the highest score in this set, from 4.6 across 275 amazon.co.uk ratings, and reviewers describe tight access and a fast rundown. It is a 1/4 inch mini listed at 40.7 Nm and about £196.70. Torque is described as short of a full-size ratchet, two French reviews report an air leak at the adjustment collar, and air consumption is not on the amazon.co.uk row. The best value is the US Pro AT005 at about £28.22. It has the highest value part, with 40 Nm, 250 rpm and 2.5 cfm stated, and 4.1 from 37 ratings. UK reviews use it on valve covers and timing covers and also call it painfully loud. One original unit failed and was replaced the same day. The other six listings have no award. None of these scores is a lab test.
