Stubby air ratchet for the engine bay

Updated: 22 October 2026

The bolt you can see on a valve cover is not always the bolt you can turn. A stubby air ratchet is the short tool for that engine-bay gap, and this page chooses by reach first, because a high torque figure does not shrink the head. You are working on covers, filters, or radiator bolts where a long ratchet hits the bulkhead. In the [air ratchet comparison](/hub/hand-tools/air-ratchet) the US Pro AT005 states 180 mm and 40 Nm at £28.22. Peter F. read the eight amazon.co.uk listings on 20 October 2026 and did not measure a bay. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What stubby means on these listings

A stubby air ratchet is a short body for a gap a long handle will not enter. Draper's shared manual for the 84122 and the 84126 describes a stubby yoke for radiators, spark plugs, air conditioning, and water pumps. That is the maker's job list, not a measurement of your bay. The US Pro AT005 prints the length. At £28.22 it is 3/8 inch, 180 mm, 40 Nm, 2.5 cfm, and BSP, with 4.1 from 37. UK reviews cite valve covers and call it loud. The 84126 costs £37.71 and prints no torque, while the August 2025 manual states 85 Nm and 1.21 kg.

When 1/4 inch fits and 3/8 inch does not

Cromwell treats 1/4 inch as light duty. Step down when the fastener is 1/4 inch, or when a 3/8 inch socket will not seat. The 1105MAX-D2 is the 1/4 inch tool, after you sort the inlet. It is £196.70, about 41 Nm, 650 g, and 7.36 inches on the display length. A UK dealer sheet lists 1/4 inch NPT and 88.9 dB(A). Sealey, Draper, and the US Pro are BSP, and the threads do not seal on each other. The air ratchet buying guide is the fitting check before you pay for that short head. The 105-D3 keeps a 3/8 inch anvil at £148.03, 34 Nm, 640 g, and 18.5 cm, with no UK review text here. At 34 Nm a light cover screw can turn, and a fastener nearer 80 Nm will stall it.

Tools that lose on reach

Torque does not fold the handle. The 1207MAX-D3 lists 88 Nm at £216.76 and 1.42 kg. Amazon's 0.38 inch length is unusable. A UK seller gives 275 mm and 23 cfm at free speed. That body will not enter a gap the 180 mm US Pro can. In the open it can still be the right tool, and the best air ratchet page is where running torque wins over reach. The Sealey SA21/S is the long 1/2 inch, at £40.53, 61 Nm, and 26.5 cm. The Durlo CP127216 is £26.99 and 265 mm, with no torque and a listed 0.01 g to reject.

After the bolt is loose

Once the nut turns, spin it off and leave the final tightness to a hand torque wrench. Draper's manual for the 84122 and the 84126 says the tool is not a torque wrench. A plastic cover can crack if you stay on the trigger after it seats. Stop if the bolt will not break. A seized steering, brake, or suspension fastener, and a torque-to-yield engine bolt, need someone with the replacement procedure.

Common questions

What is a stubby air ratchet?
A stubby air ratchet is a short air ratchet for a gap a long handle cannot enter, such as a valve cover or a radiator bolt. In this set the US Pro AT005 states 180 mm, 40 Nm, and £28.22. The Draper 84126 takes a stubby yoke from the shared manual, and the listing prints no length beside 180 mm.
Will it remove a valve cover?
It can, when the head fits and the bolts are not seized. UK reviews of the US Pro AT005, at 180 mm and 40 Nm, mention valve covers and timing covers, and they welcome the modest torque because a bolt is less likely to snap. That is review comment, not a test on your engine.
Is 40 Nm enough in the engine bay?
Forty newton-metres, the figure on the US Pro AT005 at £28.22, is enough for many cover and filter bolts. It is not an 80 Nm fastener, and it will not free a rusted suspension bolt. The 105-D3 states 34 Nm, while the 1207MAX-D3 states 88 Nm only if 275 mm will enter. Finish a critical nut with a hand torque wrench.
Do I need 1/4 inch instead of 3/8 inch?
Use 1/4 inch when the bolt and your sockets are 1/4 inch. The 1105MAX-D2 is that tool, at about 41 Nm, 650 g, 7.36 inches, and £196.70, with 1/4 inch NPT on a UK dealer sheet. The 105-D3 keeps a 3/8 inch anvil at 34 Nm and 18.5 cm. One reviewer found it too light for sockets much over 13 mm.
Is the Draper 84126 the same length as the US Pro?
No length on the 84126 listing matches the US Pro AT005's stated 180 mm, so they are not shown to be the same. The amazon row lists 500 g and no torque. The August 2025 manual states 1.21 kg, 85 Nm, and 4 cfm. Until a length is printed, do not assume both tools reach the same bolt.
Why not buy the 88 Nm model for everything?
The 1207MAX-D3 states 88 Nm at £216.76 and 1.42 kg, and a UK seller gives 275 mm in place of Amazon's unusable 0.38 inch. That length loses in a crowded bay to the 180 mm US Pro. If the head will not enter, the extra torque never reaches the bolt.
