Air ratchet buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a compressor and a socket set in the box, and you still have not chosen a 1/4, 3/8, or 1/2 inch square. That choice sets which sockets fit, how much air the tool asks for at 90 psi, and whether the inlet thread meets a UK coupler. This air ratchet buying guide puts those checks in order for eight amazon.co.uk listings priced from £26.99 to £216.76 on 20 October 2026. The [air ratchet comparison](/hub/hand-tools/air-ratchet) lines those eight rows up. Peter F. used the listings and public maker sheets, not a workshop test. What you are buying

An air ratchet spins a square drive on compressed air so you can run a nut off without swinging a spanner. It turns continuously, compared with an impact wrench, which delivers hammer blows. Draper's manual for the 84122 and the 84126 says to snug the nut, then finish a critical fastener with a hand torque wrench. If the fastener will not move, call a professional for a seized steering, brake, or suspension fastener.

Drive, torque, and head length

Match the square to your sockets, then read torque at about 90 psi. In this set the 3/8 inch Ingersoll Rand 1207MAX-D3 is listed at 88 Nm, while the 1/2 inch Sealey SA21/S is listed at 61 Nm and £40.53. The 1207MAX-D3 is listed at 1.42 kg, and a UK seller gives 275 mm, because Amazon's 0.38 inch length on that row is unusable. A long body loses beside a radiator even when 88 Nm beats 40 Nm on paper. If the bay is the whole job, the stubby air ratchet page starts from reach.

Air, hose, and the inlet thread

Match the stated cfm to the air your compressor can keep delivering at 90 psi, and leave a little headroom. Compel's planning line for an air ratchet is about 4 cfm, and Cromwell's rule of thumb is a minimum of about 3 cfm at 90–100 psi. Here the US Pro states 2.5 cfm, the Sealey states 5 cfm at 90 psi, and the Draper manual states 4 cfm. Sealey, Draper, and the US Pro use 1/4 inch BSP. A UK dealer lists the 1105MAX-D2, about £196.70, as 1/4 inch NPT. BSP and NPT will not seal on each other, and tape will not turn one into the other. Regulator setting and oil sit on the how to use an air ratchet page.

Noise, vibration, and a blank listing

Declared sound runs from 81.8 dB(A) for the 105-D3 on Ingersoll Rand's GB page to 95 dB(A) in the Sealey manual. The 1105MAX-D2 dealer sheet states 88.9 dB(A). Those are tool emissions, not a daily dose. Wear defenders at 95 dB(A). The Draper 84126 listing at £37.71 gives no torque and shows 500 g, while the August 2025 manual states 85 Nm, 4 cfm, and 1.21 kg. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the goods must match the description.

Common questions

Is 3/8 inch enough for car work?
For covers, filters, and many bracket bolts, a 3/8 inch air ratchet is enough when the stated torque covers the fastener and the head fits the bay. Cromwell treats 3/8 inch as the usual size, 1/4 inch as lighter work, and 1/2 inch as the socket set you already own. In this set the 1207MAX-D3 is listed at 88 Nm and the US Pro at 40 Nm, so the square alone does not tell you the strength.
What compressor do I need for an air ratchet?
You need delivered air at 90 psi, with a little headroom, rather than a large tank. Compel's planning line is about 4 cfm, and Cromwell's minimum is about 3 cfm at 90–100 psi. In this set the US Pro states 2.5 cfm, the Sealey states 5 cfm at 90 psi, and the Draper manual states 4 cfm.
Is a 1/2 inch air ratchet always stronger than 3/8 inch?
The square is the socket, and a larger one is not more torque by itself. Cromwell describes 1/2 inch as the higher-torque end in general, though these rows disagree. The 3/8 inch 1207MAX-D3 is listed at 88 Nm, and the 1/2 inch Sealey SA21/S at 61 Nm and 5 cfm at 90 psi.
Will a 1/4 inch BSP air ratchet fit a UK coupler?
A 1/4 inch BSP inlet matches the coupler on most UK garage hoses, so the Sealey SA21/S, both Draper models, and the US Pro AT005 are the simpler fit in this set. A UK dealer lists the Ingersoll Rand 1105MAX-D2, about £196.70, as 1/4 inch NPT. Those threads do not seal on each other, and tape does not convert one into the other.
What is a reactionless air ratchet, and do these have it?
Cromwell describes a reactionless air ratchet as a safety measure that stops the tool rebounding and snapping the handle out of your hands. None of the eight amazon.co.uk listings here uses that word, including the Ingersoll Rand 105-D3, 1105MAX-D2, and 1207MAX-D3. A high price or a short body is not evidence of that head.
Should I buy the £27 Durlo or the £28 US Pro?
Between these two entry rows, the US Pro AT005 is the one you can check against the compressor, if a 3/8 inch square suits your sockets. It is £28.22 and states 40 Nm, 250 rpm, 2.5 cfm, and BSP, with UK reviews that mention covers and noise. The Durlo CP127216 is £26.99, with no torque, no cfm, a listed mass of 0.01 g, and one French review.
