Air ratchet vs impact wrench

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on the driveway with the compressor already running, and one bolt is deciding whether the brake job finishes before dark. Weighing an air ratchet vs impact wrench comes down to how each tool applies force. A ratchet keeps turning through a pawl, and an impact wrench hits the anvil with hammer blows. This page says which job belongs on which tool, which socket rule applies, and why a torque wrench still finishes any fastener that has a specification. The eight listings stay on the [air ratchet comparison](/hub/hand-tools/air-ratchet). Peter F. used maker manuals and listing figures rather than a workshop test. Two different mechanisms

An air ratchet and an impact wrench both take a socket on compressed air. A ratchet uses a small air motor and a pawl, so the drive keeps turning while you hold the trigger. There is no hammer in that drive. Draper's manuals describe that continuous action and state that the ratchet is not a torque wrench. An impact wrench stores energy and lets it go as blows on the anvil. Those blows shift a seized fastener. Clarke's CAT131 manual says to use a few hammer blows, then finish with a torque wrench. Running torque in this set runs from 34 Nm on the 105-D3 to 88 Nm on the 1207MAX-D3, while the fastener is already turning. It is not impact-wrench breakaway. If a short pull does not start the bolt, a longer hold on the ratchet is the wrong next move.

Which job gets which tool

If you are choosing an air ratchet or an impact gun for the same bolt, start from whether the thread is free. Use the ratchet when the fastener is already free, or only snug, and the head has to sit beside a cover, a filter housing, or a radiator. A rusted suspension bolt, an exhaust flange, or a wheel nut you are only cracking loose belongs on an impact wrench or a breaker bar. Do not treat 88 Nm on the 1207MAX-D3 as the blow that cracks a nut after a wet winter. If a steering, brake, or suspension fastener will not move, call a garage. Pressure, oil, and direction sit on the how to use an air ratchet page.

Sockets, air, and final torque

Socket rules are not the same on both tools. Chicago Pneumatic's UK note describes impact sockets as thick and matt, made for hammer blows, and warns that chrome hand sockets can crack on an impact wrench. Draper's manuals for the 84122 and the 84126 still require impact-rated sockets, so no hammer is not a free pass on those two stock numbers. Ratchet listings and manuals in this set that state a consumption figure sit at about 2.5–5 cfm. Free-speed figures on Ingersoll Rand sheets are much higher than those averages, so do not size the compressor from a free-speed number. That check lives on the air ratchet buying guide. Neither tool sets a specified torque. Crack a wheel nut loose, then torque it to the car maker's figure on refit.

The practical pair

Buy both only if the compressor can feed the hungrier tool. A small DIY compressor that holds a ratchet at roughly 2.5–5 cfm can lag when an impact wrench starts hammering. If you already own the impact wrench, add a ratchet for free fasteners in a tight bay. If you only own a ratchet, use a breaker bar for a seized bolt, and keep the torque wrench for the specification. If the bolt is free and the bay is tight, use the air ratchet. If it is seized, use the impact wrench or a breaker bar. This page does not rank Durlo, Sealey, Draper, US Pro, or Ingersoll Rand against one another.

Common questions

What is the difference between an air ratchet and an impact wrench?
An air ratchet turns the socket continuously through a pawl while you hold the trigger. An impact wrench releases hammer blows on the anvil. Both can spin a nut that is already loose. They are not substitutes once the thread is seized or the fastener has a specified torque. The blows are what crack a stuck fastener.
Can an air ratchet remove a rusted bolt?
Not if the bolt is still seized. Running torque here runs from 34 Nm on the 105-D3 to 88 Nm on the 1207MAX-D3, while the fastener is already turning. That is not impact-wrench breakaway. Use a few blows from an impact wrench, or a breaker bar, then the ratchet once the thread has started.
Which tool is safer around a small fastener?
The ratchet is the gentler choice beside an impact wrench's first blow, which can round a soft head or snap a stud. It can still over-run a brass screw or a plastic clip if you stay on the trigger after it seats. On the Draper 84122 and 84126, fit an impact-rated socket, because those manuals require it.
Do I need both an air ratchet and an impact wrench?
You need both when seized fasteners and snug bolts in a tight bay turn up in the same job, and only if the compressor can feed the impact wrench as well as the ratchet. A ratchet suits covers that are already free. An impact wrench cracks wheel nuts, then becomes clumsy on a small cover screw. The torque wrench is still required either way.
Can either tool set wheel-nut torque?
Neither an air ratchet nor an impact wrench sets wheel-nut torque. Clarke's CAT131 manual says to use a few hammer blows and then a torque wrench on wheel nuts and engine parts. Draper states that its ratchet is not a torque wrench. Crack the nut loose, then tighten to the car maker's figure with a torque wrench.
