3/4 socket set for HGV hub nuts

Updated: 22 October 2026

The van is on the stand, or the 7.5 tonne is in the yard, and the hub nut is larger than anything in the 1/2 in roll. A 3/4 socket set for HGV hub nuts sometimes fits that fastener, and sometimes the nut is a grooved profile that a 6-point hex socket will only round. The nine general sets are on the [3/4 socket set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/3-4-socket-set). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The Products Compared editorial team wrote this on 21 October 2026 from the saved review notes and UK pages for specialist axle sockets. It does not rate any set for HGV wheel torque.

What a general set has done in these reviews

The reviews name jobs. They do not certify a truck. A buyer of the shallow CASOMAN set wrote that it was for a 1 in impact gun on a 7.5 tonne truck, and an HGV workshop note says no socket split. It does not say which nut or which torque. The deep CASOMAN list stops at 41 mm, and those reviews are about crank bolts. Hilka reviewers name Mercedes van hub nuts and a Citroen Berlingo. A KATSU 36 mm socket on a Citroen axle nut was slightly large and needed side pressure. Those accounts are not a rating. Steel for a gun is on the impact or hand 3/4 socket page. The first pull on a hand bar is on the how to use a 3/4 socket set page.

Read the millimetre list against the nut

Look at the nut, then at the printed list. The shallow CASOMAN set and TecoTek print 17 mm through 55 mm. Hilka prints 22 mm to 50 mm, including 42, 45 and 48 mm, and not 55 mm. The deep CASOMAN list stops at 41 mm. KATSU 420462 prints through 65 mm in carbon steel, which is a different purchase from 55 mm in chrome molybdenum. CASOMAN’s shallow title says spindle and axle nut, but the sizes are still ordinary 6-point hex openings. A snug 36 mm hex is the right family. A 70 mm nut, or a nut that is not a hex, is the wrong family. Greensen and US PRO only give spans. You cannot match a hub nut to a span.

When the nut is not a hex

Some axle nuts are hexagons. Some are a ring of studs, a groove, or a lock profile for a named axle. Sealey’s CV007 is a 6-stud grooved axle-nut socket on a 3/4 in square, listed for MAN TGA and Mercedes trucks. Stockists do not agree the inner diameter, so this page will not name one millimetre. A 6-point socket from a 17–55 mm set has nothing to drive on that stud pattern. HGV Direct sells a Mercedes lock-nut socket around 105–125 mm, above a set that ends at 55 mm. If the workshop manual names a socket, buy that socket. If the nut in front of you is not a hex, stop.

Torque and when to stop

The torque figure is in the vehicle manual for that axle. There is no single UK legal torque for every hub nut. One Hilka reviewer reported 260 lb/ft on a 46 mm socket. That is one account of a hand ratchet, not a 7.5 tonne torque. Stop when the bar is bending, when the socket needs side pressure, or when the vehicle is held only by a jack. PUWER 1998 regulation 4 requires suitable equipment for the operation. A hex socket on a grooved axle nut is not that equipment, and a pipe on a T-bar is the improvisation HSE leaflet INDG229 tells workplaces not to use. A 3/4 in set that prints the size you measured can undo a plain hex. It is the wrong confidence for every axle badge on the road.

Common questions

Will a normal 6-point 3/4 in set undo a van hub nut?
It will when the nut is a hex and the opening matches. Hilka reviewers report Mercedes van hub nuts and a Citroen Berlingo. It will not when the nut is grooved, a lock ring, or larger than the printed list. Measure the flats before you buy for the badge on the grille.
What did reviewers in this sample actually use them on?
A shallow CASOMAN buyer named a 7.5 tonne truck and a 1 in impact gun, and an HGV note says no socket split. Hilka notes name Mercedes van hubs and a Berlingo. The deep CASOMAN notes name crank bolts. Those are particular jobs, not a certificate for your axle.
Why is 55 mm not enough for every axle nut?
Some hub and lock nuts are larger, and some are not hexagons. HGV Direct lists a Mercedes lock-nut socket around 105–125 mm. Sealey specialist hub tools in the notes sit around 80–100 mm. KATSU 420462’s 65 mm is still a hex in carbon steel.
What is a grooved or 6-stud axle socket?
It is a socket cut for a ring of studs or a groove on a named axle, not for a six-sided nut. Sealey CV007 is one example, on a 3/4 in square, for MAN TGA and Mercedes trucks. A 6-point socket from a general set cannot drive that profile.
Is a 36 mm socket always the right Citroen axle nut?
One reviewer used 36 mm from KATSU 420462 on a Citroen axle nut and had to hold it square because it was slightly large. Another axle can be a different size or profile. A single review is a warning about fit, not a specification for every Citroen.
Does a 7.5 tonne truck mean I need 1 in drive?
One buyer used the shallow CASOMAN 3/4 in sockets with a 1 in impact gun on a 7.5 tonne truck. The sockets were still 3/4 in drive. Whether your truck needs 3/4 in or 1 in is in the manual and on the anvil you own.
