How to use a ratchet spanner: direction, pull, stop

Updated: 22 October 2026

The nut is in a short gap, the ring is the right size, and you are about to load it. How to use a ratchet spanner, on this page, is the stroke: set the direction before the tool is on the fastener, seat the ring, pull, and stop when the nut needs a breaker or a torque figure. The [ratchet spanner comparison](/hub/hand-tools/ratchet-spanner) is the twelve sets. This page does not rank them. Peter F. wrote it on 22 October 2026 from those amazon.co.uk listings, HSE leaflet INDG229, and the RS spanner-set guide. He did not run a lab test. Set the direction before the spanner is on the nut

A ratchet ring drives one way and freewheels the other, so you can turn the nut without lifting the spanner off. Direction is a small lever or a flip of the whole spanner. Check it in the air, with the ring empty. If it is reversed, the handle moves and the nut does not. Rolson 46905 says the ratchets are reversible and does not show a lever or a tooth count. Find the drive by turning the empty ring with a finger. Bosch’s set does not click: the listing says the ratchet is toothless and works from a 3° backswing. Silence on that set is the design. A skip on a 72-tooth set is a different fault. If the head must sit at an angle, that is a flex head ratchet spanner question.

Run the nut, then stop

Once the ring is seated, take a short stroke and let the ratchet recover. The 5° figure on a 72-tooth claim is 360 divided by 72, a rule of thumb, not a strength rating. Bosch’s stated 3° backswing is a shorter version of the same idea. Do not wind up for a sweep that hits the inner wing. Pull towards you when you can. A push sends your knuckles into the casting. Rolson’s reviews limit the double-ended rings to light jobs. Do not put a tube on the handle. HSE leaflet INDG229 tells workplaces not to use a pipe as an extension, and to scrap a splayed spanner. Wheel-nut figures are on the ratchet spanner for car repair page.

Silence, dust, and a skip

If the Bosch ring turns the nut and makes no click, watch the nut, not the sound. If a 72-tooth spanner clicks and the nut stays still, the direction is wrong, the ring is not seated, or the pawl is not holding. Check those three before you add force. One review of the ss shovan fixed eight says the 17 mm and 19 mm seized in dust and came free with WD-40. That is one workplace, not a reason to soak every ratchet. A 19 mm on the flex ss shovan set that seizes after about two uses is a mechanism that is not running. A Blue Spot review describes a 12 mm that broke on first use. That is a seller question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, with a 30-day short-term right to reject.

Where a professional or another tool takes over

Change tool when the jaw has spread, when the ring is rounding the nut, or when the manual gives a torque. HSE’s note is to scrap a spanner with splayed jaws. At home the same slip rounds the nut, and the next tool is an extractor, not a longer handle. If the fixing is safety-critical, gas, or under pressure, call someone who does that work. A flex head is not the breaker. A HYCHIKA review calls the mechanism sloppy and not for heavy duty. Break a rusted nut with a fixed spanner or a socket, then run the thread with the ratchet. If you are choosing a set, start with the ratchet spanner buying guide.

Common questions

Which way do I set it before it is on the nut?
Set it in the air. Flick the lever, or turn the empty ring with a finger, until the drive direction matches the way you need the nut to go. A reversed ratchet feels like a broken gear: the handle moves and the nut does not.
Do I flip the spanner or move a lever?
It depends on the set, and the listing has to say which. Some ratchet spanners reverse when you turn the tool over. Others have a lever. Rolson’s bullets say the rings are reversible and do not describe a lever or a tooth count. If the page you bought from does not name a lever, do not assume the photograph of a different model applies. Find the lock with an empty ring.
Can I put a tube on the handle?
No. HSE leaflet INDG229 tells you not to use a pipe as an extension handle, and not to keep a spanner with splayed jaws. A tube is how a pawl or a head becomes the fuse. If the nut will not start, use a fixed spanner for the breaking pull, then the ratchet to run the thread. Do not hammer the head either.
The 19 mm drags. Is that dirt or a dead pawl?
It can be either, and one review is not a diagnosis. On the ss shovan fixed set, a reviewer said the 17 mm and 19 mm seized in dust and freed with WD-40. On the flex set, a 19 mm seized after about two uses. Wipe or blow the obvious grit out once. If the ring still skips or stays locked, stop using it.
What if it breaks the first time I use it properly?
That is a seller question, not a cue to change your grip. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects satisfactory quality, with a 30-day short-term right to reject when the goods fail that test. A Blue Spot review describes a 12 mm that broke on first use. A size the listing never included is a different problem: you cannot reject a set for lacking a spanner the bullet did not promise.
