Ratchet spanner buying guide: sizes, swing and head

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with an 8–19 mm ratchet spanner set in the basket, and the photograph looks complete. A ratchet spanner buying guide is the order of checks before the star line gets a vote: count the millimetres in the bullet, read the swing as an angle, then decide whether the head is fixed or flexible. The [ratchet spanner comparison](/hub/hand-tools/ratchet-spanner) holds the twelve rows and the prices. This page does not name a winner. Peter F. prepared this on 22 October 2026 from those amazon.co.uk listings, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Count the sizes, not the range

From 8 mm to 19 mm inclusive there are twelve sizes. An eight-piece box cannot hold them all, even when the title says 8–19 mm. Blue Spot 04310 and both ss shovan eights list 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 19 mm, so 9, 11, 16 and 18 mm are absent. If a clip is 16 mm, the pouch will not grow a spanner. Amazon Basics DS-RWS-5M, at £18.53, lists 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 mm, with no 12 mm. Bosch Professional 1600A016BU, at £101.53, skips 9 mm and 11 mm and keeps 16 mm and 18 mm. Qnkaa, at £29.95, lists every size from 8 mm to 19 mm. Both Enventor files list every size from 6 mm to 19 mm. None of these twelve listings cites BS ISO 1711-1.

Read the swing as an angle

Where these listings state 72 teeth, the step is about 5°. That is 360 divided by 72, a rule of thumb, not a strength rating and not a torque. Enventor DS003 claims 90 teeth and a 4° swing. Bosch claims a toothless ratchet and a 3° backswing. A smaller angle helps when the handle can only move a short way. It does not crack a nut that has not moved. One reviewer of Enventor SGRD008 says the 72-tooth gear is a 36-tooth dual pawl that behaves like 72. The Amazon Basics 7-piece file prints 72 Newton metres beside a 72-tooth claim. That field is not a measured torque. Rolson 46905 does not state a tooth count. HRC 48 on the Qnkaa bullets is a material claim, not a British Standard.

Head and case, after the sizes

A fixed head is one piece between your hand and the nut. A 180° flex head lets the handle sit at an angle when it cannot line up. The titles that state a flex head are ss shovan Spanner008 at £32.49, HYCHIKA’s nine-piece at £27.89, and Enventor DS003 at £45.99. Enventor SGRD008 says combination in the title and flex-head in one components line. That conflict is why the flex head or fixed head page exists. A case does not add a missing size. Qnkaa includes a roll pouch, Bosch a wrap bag, and both Enventor sets a toolbox. On a car, the same gaps matter. That job is on the ratchet spanner for car repair page.

What the listing fields get wrong

Both Amazon Basics files show 4.6 from 9,751, and the review text matches. That is one shared file, not 19,502 opinions. A missing-12 mm comment fits the five-piece list. The seven-piece bullet lists 12 mm and also says 5-piece while the title says seven. Length fields are often unusable: Bosch 3 cm, Amazon Basics 15 mm and 17 mm, Blue Spot 8 metres. Wera’s Amazon file prints 1 centimetre-kilogram, powder coated, and 11 inches. The included line does give 144 mm to 246 mm beside each size. A blank warranty box would not cancel the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and the short-term right to reject is 30 days. The stroke is on how to use a ratchet spanner.

Common questions

What does 8–19 mm mean on an 8-piece set?
It is a span, not a contents list. From 8 mm to 19 mm there are twelve sizes, so eight pieces have to skip four of them. On the eight-piece rows in this folder the usual absences are 9, 11, 16 and 18 mm, with 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 19 mm present. A title that only says 8–19 mm has not promised the missing four.
Is 72 teeth a strength rating?
No. Seventy-two teeth is about a 5° step, from 360 divided by 72. That figure is a rule of thumb for how far the handle must swing before the pawl takes another bite. It is not a torque, and it is not the 72 Newton metre field on the Amazon Basics 7-piece file. It does not make the spanner safe as a breaker bar.
Does a case matter more than a missing 12 mm?
No. A roll, a wrap, or a toolbox keeps the set together. It does not create a size the bullet left out. Amazon Basics’ five-piece list has no 12 mm, and the bullets do not name a case. Qnkaa’s roll pouch sits around a list that does include 12 mm, at £29.95. Choose the contents first. Add storage only after that list matches the nuts you meet.
Why do both Amazon Basics sets show 4.6 from 9,751?
The star line and the review text match across the two files. Count that as one sample. The missing-12 mm comment fits the five-piece sizes, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 mm. The seven-piece bullet lists 12 mm and also says 5-piece. A shared 9,751 is not evidence that each ASIN was reviewed on its own, and it is not 19,502 reviews.
What should I ignore in the torque and length fields?
Ignore a length of 3 cm, 15 mm, 17 mm, or 8 metres, because those figures do not describe a set of spanners. Ignore 72 Newton metres on the Amazon Basics 7-piece, and ignore 1 centimetre-kilogram on the Wera file. Neither is a test result in this folder. Where Wera prints 144 mm to 246 mm beside the individual sizes, that line is the one you can use.
