Ratchet spanner for car repair: sizes and when to stop

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are under a metric car, and a listing has already said the set is for automotive work. A ratchet spanner for car repair is right when a socket head will not fit and the nut only needs to be run, not measured. It is the wrong tool for wheel nuts and for any fastener the manual gives a torque. The [ratchet spanner comparison](/hub/hand-tools/ratchet-spanner) holds the twelve size lists. Peter F. wrote this on 22 October 2026 from those amazon.co.uk listings, Halfords’ wheel-nut note, and HSE leaflet INDG229, with no lab test and no torque for your car. The sizes a metric car actually uses

On a modern metric car, ordinary fasteners cluster on 10, 13, 15, 17 and 19 mm. Twelve and 16 mm show up often enough that a set which skips them stops a job. This page does not invent a torque. It only says whether the spanner is in the box. Amazon Basics’ five-piece list, at £18.53, is 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15 mm, with no 12, 16, 17 or 19 mm. The usual eight-piece pattern, on Blue Spot 04310 and both ss shovan sets, includes 12, 17 and 19 mm and skips 16 mm. Bosch keeps 16 mm and 18 mm and skips 9 mm and 11 mm. Qnkaa, at £29.95, lists every size from 8 mm to 19 mm. Counting a title in general is on the ratchet spanner buying guide.

Spanner when the socket head will not fit

Use a socket when there is room above the nut. Use a ratchet spanner when the socket head is too tall, or an extension cannot pass a bulkhead, a manifold, or a hose. Rolson’s reviews use the double-ended rings where a socket will not fit, and limit them to light nuts. The stroke, and the pipe you do not add, is on how to use a ratchet spanner. A flex head is only for the nut the handle cannot meet square. ss shovan’s flex eight, HYCHIKA, and Enventor DS003 state a 180° head. The condition is on the flex head ratchet spanner page.

Stop before the wheel nuts and the brakes

A ratchet spanner has no torque scale. Halfords says a torque wrench is the safe way to tighten wheel nuts. Wera sells a car torque wrench, 40–200 N·m, citing DIN EN ISO 6789-1, with 17 mm and 19 mm sockets aimed at wheels. Those sizes on a ratchet spanner do not make it that wrench. Caliper bolts, carrier bolts, and suspension fasteners often have a figure and sometimes a sequence in the vehicle manual. Use the ratchet spanner on a cover, a sensor bracket, or an ordinary clip that the manual does not number. When the manual gives a number, use a torque wrench set to that number. If the fixing is safety-critical and you lack the figure or the wrench, leave it.

What these sets will not do

These sets will not cover imperial fasteners. A 13 mm ring is not a half-inch, and 19 mm is not a three-quarter. Do not pick the nearest millimetre. That is how corners round. They will not replace a fixed spanner on a rusted nut. HSE leaflet INDG229 says not to use a pipe as an extension. Under the car that pipe can slip and break the pawl. Crack the nut with a fixed spanner, then run it with the ratchet. A cheater pipe does not add a missing 16 mm. Gas, fuel, and airbag work are the moment to call a professional. PUWER 1998 applies at work, not on your own driveway.

Common questions

What if the set has no 12 mm or 16 mm?
You will stop when you meet that bolt. The Amazon Basics five-piece list has neither, and it also lacks 17 mm and 19 mm. The common eight-piece lists include 12 mm and skip 16 mm. Bosch includes 16 mm and skips 9 mm and 11 mm. Qnkaa includes both 12 mm and 16 mm from 8 mm to 19 mm. Both Enventor 14-piece lists include them inside 6–19 mm. Buy the list that contains the bolt you can already see.
Spanner or socket in an engine bay?
Use the socket when there is room above the nut for the head and an extension. Use the ratchet spanner when the socket head is too tall or the extension cannot pass a bulkhead or a hose. The ring is flatter and the stroke is short. A flex head is only for the nut the handle cannot meet square. If a universal joint on the socket reaches it cleanly, that is often the stiffer choice.
Can I do wheel nuts with a ratchet spanner?
You should not tighten them that way. Halfords points you to a torque wrench for wheel nuts. A ratchet spanner has no scale, so tight is a guess. Wera’s 40–200 N·m car torque wrench, with 17 mm and 19 mm sockets, is an example of the other tool. Those sizes also appear on ratchet spanners here. The size match does not make the spanner a torque wrench. Follow the vehicle figure.
What about brakes and suspension?
Run ordinary brackets and covers with the ratchet spanner if the manual does not give a torque. Stop for caliper bolts, carrier bolts, and suspension fasteners when the manual specifies a figure or a sequence. Do not invent that figure from a forum. If you do not have the manual or a torque wrench, leave the safety-critical fixing. A rounded caliper bolt is a worse outcome than a job left for someone equipped to do it.
Do these sets help with imperial fasteners?
No. Every size list in this folder is metric. Do not put 13 mm on a half-inch nut, or 19 mm on a three-quarter, because the nearest size rounds the corners. If the car, or the accessory, is imperial, you need an imperial spanner. This comparison does not include one.
