A paraffin heater burns paraffin or kerosene on a wick and releases heat and exhaust into the same space. On amazon.co.uk this set is three different purchases: a twin-wick greenhouse lamp, camping stove-heaters with a pan top, and a cabinet sold as a RX 2485. The NHS lists paraffin heaters as a source when they are faulty or poorly ventilated, and says not to use a camping stove indoors or in a tent. The same page also says corded electric, which clashes with those reviews. Hour figures and watt lines on these pages are claims, not a room test. Six listings are compared here by job, tank, any shut-off a review actually describes, and whether the page agrees with itself. The [indoor safety notes](/hub/portable-heaters/paraffin-heater/sub/paraffin-heater-indoor-safety) cover alarms, tents and bedrooms. Treats paraffin and kerosene as names for the same distillate. Merchants use BS 2869 Class C1 for wick heaters and Class C2 for boilers, so the grade on the can has to match the manual.

The best paraffin heaters in detail

Xigner RC-LK4897 6 L

Rank 1

Xigner RC-LK4897 6 L

∼£58

Our view

The Xigner RC-LK4897 is a 5.23 kg freestanding kerosene stove-heater at £57.99, with a 6 litre tank, up to 18 hours claimed, and 0.26 litres an hour claimed. The page says 5.0 from 2 reviews. The only review text says it is easy to use and gets very warm. One line says 9000 BTU/h and the heat-output field says 23500 BTU. Coverage is claimed at 10–20 m². A knob, a fuel gauge, and a removable ceramic top for a pan are claimed. No shut-off and no spare wicks are stated. Two reviews cannot carry a judgement beyond that short comment.

Pros

  • 6 litre tank with up to 18 hours claimed at £57.99
  • Fuel gauge and removable ceramic top claimed
  • 5.0 from 2 reviews, with one short positive UK note

Cons

  • 9000 BTU/h and 23500 BTU are both printed
  • Only two reviews, and one text in the file
  • No shut-off and no spare wicks stated

Best for: Outdoor or well-ventilated camping heat and a pan, if you accept a two-review sample.

Less suitable: A bedroom, or anyone who needs one agreed heat figure and a stated shut-off.

Common questions

Can it be used indoors?

The listing says indoor and outdoor, and names garages and poorly insulated rooms. It does not state a shut-off or a ventilation figure. Indoor use is a seller tag, not a test result.

Does it have a fuel gauge?

The bullets claim a fuel gauge and a sealed tank cap. The only review text does not mention the gauge.

What area does it heat?

The listing claims 10–20 m². It also prints 9000 BTU/h in one place and 23500 BTU in the heat-output field. Those figures are not reconciled.

PFCTART YMHW00084 5 L

Rank 2

PFCTART YMHW00084 5 L

∼£90

Our view

The PFCTART YMHW00084 is a black freestanding kerosene heater at £89.99, with a 5 litre tank, a claimed 10–20 m², and a weight of 7 kg. Two amazon.co.uk reviews give it 4.5. Both use it as a cooker as well as a heater, with a grate, a griddle, a syphon, and a bag. One says the cage gets hot, the top is fiddly to level, no spare wick is included, and no tip-over device is visible. The title mentions bioethanol; that review says the instructions do not. Indoor is on the form, and the review says to ventilate because it smells like a kerosene lamp. You get a large-tank camping stove. You do not get a stated run time or a stated shut-off.

Pros

  • 5 litre tank and a claimed 10–20 m² at £89.99
  • Two UK reviews describe real cooking use and a wire grate
  • Syphon, funnel, griddle, and a storage bag in a review

Cons

  • Only 2 reviews
  • No visible tip-over device and no spare wick in that review
  • Title says bioethanol; a review says the instructions do not

Best for: Outdoor cooking and heat on a campsite, if you ventilate whenever it is under cover.

Less suitable: A bedroom overnight, or anyone who needs spare wicks and a stated shut-off in the box.

Common questions

Is this suitable for indoor use?

The attribute block says indoor, and the bullets also say outdoor and camping. A UK review says indoor use smells like a kerosene lamp and that you should ventilate. The same review found no visible tip-over device.

Does it include a barbecue rack?

The bullets claim a barbecue rack. A UK review describes a round griddle and a top that will hold pans, and says the top must be levelled carefully.

Are spare wicks included?

A UK review says no spare wicks are included and estimates the wick holder at about 4 inches. The listing does not state a wick size.

Corona RX 2485 (Tecno Air System)

Rank 3

Corona RX 2485 (Tecno Air System)

∼£189

Our view

The Tecno Air System listing for the Corona RX 2485 is £189.00 and 7 kg, with 2400 W and 90 m³ printed and a 4.0 from 38 amazon.co.uk reviews. UK review text describes a paraffin heater with a removable 4 litre tank, about 16 hours when turned down, and an emergency shut-off that smells when it trips. Another UK note says one side arrived dented. The same listing says corded electric and ceramic, which conflicts with the liquid-fuel line and with those reviews. Treat 2400 W as the printed figure, not as a resolved test. It is the only kept cabinet whose reviews name a tank and a shut-off. The attribute clash is still unresolved. A separate UK seller page for this model name describes 2.4 kW, a 4 litre tank, up to 17 hours, battery ignition and a tip cut-off, at £199 including VAT. That page does not replace the amazon.co.uk line that also says corded electric.

Pros

  • 4.0 from 38 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest base on a cabinet in this set
  • UK review describes a removable 4 litre tank and about 16 hours turned down
  • UK review mentions an emergency shut-off and a low-fuel indicator

Cons

  • Power source says corded electric while fuel and reviews say paraffin
  • Element field says ceramic against those reviews
  • One UK review reports a dent; shut-off smell is also reported

Best for: A single room where you want a named cabinet paraffin heater and you will check the live listing against the corded-electric field before you buy.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a confirmed mains plug, a greenhouse frost lamp, or a heater to sleep beside.

Common questions

Is the Corona RX 2485 listing electric?

The amazon.co.uk power-source field says corded electric and the element field says ceramic. The fuel field says liquid fuel, and UK reviews describe a paraffin heater with a removable 4 litre tank. Those lines disagree, so the page does not settle the question.

How long does the tank last?

A UK review says the removable tank holds four litres and gives about sixteen hours when the heater is turned down a little. The attribute block does not print a tank size or a run time.

Does it have a shut-off?

A UK review mentions an emergency shut-off and says it causes a little smell when it operates. The listing bullets do not name a tip-over switch.

Trendi E-SP100 4.5 L

Rank 4

Trendi E-SP100 4.5 L

∼£19

Our view

The Trendi E-SP100 is a 1.95 kg twin-wick paraffin greenhouse heater at £18.95, with a 4.5 litre tank and a claim of up to 80 hours and frost cover for a 6x8 house. Across 577 amazon.co.uk reviews it sits at 3.7. Some buyers report background heat in a small greenhouse, including one rise of about 8 °C and one 6x4 held near 1.7 °C overnight. The same reviews repeat loose screws, missing instructions, smoky wicks, and leaks. One chimney fell off while alight. The heat field says 4500 W and the coverage field says 0.0307 m², which do not match the greenhouse bullet. You pay little and you take on the assembly.

Pros

  • £18.95 and 3.7 from 577 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • 4.5 litre tank with up to 80 hours claimed
  • Some small-greenhouse owners report it holds off frost once assembled

Cons

  • Screws and chimney fit are the main review complaint
  • Soot, poor wicks, and filler leaks appear through the review set
  • No shut-off is stated; 4500 W and 0.0307 m² fields clash with the bullets

Best for: A small greenhouse where you will check the chimney is fixed before you fill the tank and you only need the edge off a frost.

Less suitable: A bedroom, a tent, or anyone who wants a heater that is safe to leave without checking the chimney.

Common questions

Can it be used in a shed?

One reviewer used it to warm a garage. Another ran it in a 10 by 10 shed in cold weather and reported little change and a smell. The listing’s recommended use is a greenhouse, not a sealed shed.

Does it come with a fuel tank?

Yes. The heater is built around a 4.5 litre paraffin tank. Fuel is not included. The bullets say premium paraffin.

Is it safe to leave on overnight?

The listing does not state a tip-over switch. Reviews often say the chimney screws do not hold, and one chimney came off while alight. Several buyers only trusted it after they fitted their own nuts and bolts.

MENDUNER 2.6 kW

Rank 5

MENDUNER 2.6 kW

∼£133

Our view

The MENDUNER kerosene heater is listed at £133.49 and 4.7 kg, with 2600 W claimed and a title claim of 20–25 hours. The bullets add manual ignition, a funnel, a siphon, gloves, extra wicks, and a body of cold-rolled sheet and stainless iron. No tank volume is stated. No amazon.co.uk review line is in the raw file. The page marks it for indoor rooms and also for an RV. No tip-over switch, thermostat, or IP rating is stated. Adjustable height is the only control named. You are buying a specification block and an accessory list, not a reviewed heater.

Pros

  • 2600 W claimed, a clearer watt line than the BTU clashes elsewhere
  • Extra wicks, funnel, siphon, and gloves claimed
  • Manual ignition and non-electric operation claimed

Cons

  • No review count in the raw file
  • Tank volume not stated beside the 20–25 hour title
  • No shut-off, thermostat, or coverage figure stated

Best for: A buyer who wants the claimed accessory set and will confirm tank size on the live amazon.co.uk page.

Less suitable: Anyone choosing on reviews, or a greenhouse frost lamp at a much lower price.

The bullets say it is for garages, living rooms, and apartments, and the attribute block says indoor. No ventilation rate, shut-off, or carbon monoxide note is in the listing text.

Does it come with a fuel tank?

The page calls it a kerosene heater but does not state a tank volume. What it does claim in the box is a funnel, a siphon pump, gloves, and extra wicks.

Is a run time stated?

The title says 20–25 hours of heat. No tank size is printed next to that claim, and there are no reviews in the raw file to check it.

DSYOGX 000100

Rank 6

DSYOGX 000100

∼£35

Our view

The DSYOGX 000100 is a 5.5 kg kerosene stove-heater at £34.98, with a carry handle, a fuel gauge, a glass chimney, and a ceramic top the bullets say you can lift to boil water. Heat is claimed at 23500 BTU and area at 10–20 m². Consumption is claimed at 0.07 gallons an hour. Tank volume and run time are not stated. Kerosene and a lighter are not included. No review line is in the raw file. The dimension field says 32 x 32 x 45 cm, while a bullet also prints 12.6 by 17.72 inches. No shut-off is stated. It is the cheapest stove-heater here and the one with no buyer text.

Pros

  • £34.98, the lowest stove-heater price in this set
  • Carry handle, fuel gauge, and a removable top claimed
  • 10–20 m² and a glass chimney claimed

Cons

  • No reviews in the raw file
  • Tank volume and run time not stated
  • Lighter and kerosene not included; no shut-off stated

Best for: A low-priced outdoor kerosene stove if you already own fuel and a lighter and you accept an unreviewed listing.

Less suitable: Indoor sleeping space, or a greenhouse frost lamp where the Trendi has hundreds of reviews.

Common questions

Can it be used for camping?

The bullets say camping and fishing as well as indoor heating, and they mention a carry handle. They also say it does not need mains power. No review text is in the raw file.

Does it have a carry handle?

Yes. A carrying handle is claimed, along with a chimney handle and an operating knob. The listed weight is 5.5 kg.

What area does it heat?

The listing claims 10–20 m² and up to 23500 BTU. It does not state a tank volume or a run time. Kerosene is not included.

How we compared

Six amazon.co.uk listings were kept from a wider paraffin and kerosene search and read on 19 October 2026. Prices, stars and review counts are the UK lines. There was no laboratory heat test. A large review count does not outrank a page whose own fields disagree, and a claimed run time is not a measured result. The five weights below sum to 100. No kept listing is treated as certified to BS 3300 or SI 1977/167, because the pages do not say.

1

Job and type

20%

A greenhouse frost lamp, an outdoor camping stove and a single-room cabinet are different purchases. The score follows whether the listing type matches that job.

2

Fuel grade

15%

Wick heaters are sold against BS 2869 Class C1. Class C2 is the boiler grade. Petrol is never a fuel. A title that names a second fuel loses clarity.

3

Ventilation and alarm

25%

Unflued heaters need ventilation. The NHS names paraffin heaters when faulty or poorly ventilated, and London Fire Brigade expects a carbon monoxide alarm and at least one metre of clearance.

4

Tank and claimed run time

15%

Tank volume and hours are recorded as claims. A review figure, such as about 16 hours from 4 litres, is labelled as a review, not a test.

5

Shut-off and listing clashes

25%

A shut-off counts only when a review describes it. Conflicting fields on the same page, including corded electric beside liquid fuel, or two BTU lines, reduce the score.

Paraffin heater buying guide

A paraffin heater is a wick appliance, not a fan heater and not an electric radiator that happens to sit under a paraffin search. Start with the job. A greenhouse frost lamp, an outdoor stove with a pan, and a single-room cabinet do not substitute for each other. Then match the fuel the manual names. For wick heaters that is the Class C1 grade merchants sell, not petrol and not the Class C2 boiler grade. Ventilation and a carbon monoxide alarm come before any hour claim.

What is a paraffin heater?

A paraffin heater is an unflued appliance. It burns paraffin or kerosene on a wick and releases heat and exhaust into the same space. GOV.UK treats paraffin and kerosene as names for the same distillate. Petrol is not a substitute. Merchants use BS 2869 Class C1 for wick heaters and Class C2 for boilers, so the grade on the can has to match the manual. These six amazon.co.uk listings are not one product. Greenhouse twin-wick heaters are a tank, a chimney and a deflector.

Best for

  • Allotment keepers with no mains who only want frost off a greenhouse
  • A ventilated waking room in a power cut, treated as a combustion appliance

Not ideal for

  • A bedroom, a tent, or anywhere you would sleep beside an unflued heater
  • Anyone who needs a confirmed UK 13 A plug and dry electric heat

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Trusting an Indoor or Bedroom tag

Those words are seller text. The NHS says not to use a camping stove indoors or in a tent. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so a paraffin odour is not a detector. Leave if an alarm sounds.

  2. 2

    Lighting before the chimney locks

Trendi reviews centre on screws that do not hold, and one chimney came off while alight. Do not light a dry wick. A chimney that will not stay on means stop.

  3. 3

Treating hour and BTU lines as a test

Up to 80 hours, 4500 W, 10–20 m² and the two Xigner BTU lines are claims. A UK Corona review of about 16 hours is one review, not a lab run. No kept listing states a BS 3300 report.

What to weigh up

Fuel the manual names

High

Match the can to the manual before you match the star rating. GOV.UK treats paraffin and kerosene as names for the same distillate. Merchants use BS 2869 Class C1 for wick heaters and Class C2 for boilers. Petrol is not a fuel for any heater in this set, and the Oil Heaters (Safety) Regulations 1977 require a warning against it on a domestic unflued kerosene heater. The Trendi bullets say premium paraffin. The stove-heaters are listed as kerosene.

Ventilation and shut-off

High

These heaters are unflued. Heat and exhaust stay in the space. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so a paraffin odour is not a detector. The NHS lists paraffin heaters as a source when they are faulty or poorly ventilated, and says not to use a camping stove indoors or in a tent. London Fire Brigade wants the heater at least one metre clear and a carbon monoxide alarm in the room. That alarm is the BS EN 50291 type, and BS EN 50291-2 on a boat or caravan.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Greenhouse with no mains

You only want the edge off a frost in a greenhouse that has no electricity, and you will lock the chimney and leave the vents open. The Royal Horticultural Society limits paraffin to plants that tolerate the cold, because combustion also produces water and ethylene.

One room in a power cut

You want a cabinet for a single waking room and you will treat it as a combustion appliance, with ventilation and a carbon monoxide alarm. Do not read a bedroom tag as clearance, and check the live page against the corded-electric line.

Outdoor camping stove

You want a kerosene stove with a pan top, and you will keep it out of a tent. The NHS warning against indoor and tent use still applies. Two reviews are a thin sample, and no shut-off is described.

Common questions about paraffin heaters

What fuel should a paraffin heater burn?
Paraffin and kerosene are the same distillate on GOV.UK. Wick heaters are sold against BS 2869 Class C1. Class C2 is the boiler grade. Use the grade the manual names. Never use petrol. The Oil Heaters (Safety) Regulations 1977 require a warning against petrol on a domestic unflued kerosene heater. A title that also says bioethanol, as the PFCTART page does, is a clash to read before you fill the tank.
Can I use a paraffin heater indoors or in a tent?
Not as a sleeping space, and not in a tent. Carbon monoxide has no smell. The NHS lists paraffin heaters as a source when they are faulty or poorly ventilated, and says not to use a camping stove indoors or in a tent. London Fire Brigade wants ventilation, a carbon monoxide alarm and at least one metre of clearance. A bedroom tag is seller text. A flueless gas heater is a different fuel with the same limit.
Which paraffin heater is the top pick?
The top pick is the Corona RX 2485 listing from Tecno Air System, about £189, with 4.0 from 38 amazon.co.uk reviews. UK reviews describe a removable 4 litre tank, about 16 hours turned down, and an emergency shut-off. The same page also says corded electric and ceramic, so the power source is not settled. It fits a single waking room only if you will ventilate and you accept that clash. It is not a lab result.
Which paraffin heater is the best value?
The best value is the Trendi E-SP100 at about £18.95, with 3.7 from 577 reviews, a 4.5 litre tank and a claim of up to 80 hours for a 6x8 greenhouse. Some owners report it holds frost off a small house once the chimney is fixed. The same reviews repeat loose screws, soot, poor wicks and leaks. One chimney came off while alight. The review count is not proof it is safe to leave running.
How long does a tank of paraffin last?
Treat every hour figure as a claim. A UK Corona review says about 16 hours from 4 litres when turned down. Trendi claims up to 80 hours from 4.5 litres. Xigner claims up to 18 hours from 6 litres. The MENDUNER title says 20–25 hours and does not state a tank volume. PFCTART states a 5 litre tank and no run time. DSYOGX states neither a tank volume nor a run time.
Is the Corona RX 2485 listing electric?
The amazon.co.uk power-source field says corded electric and the element field says ceramic. The fuel field says liquid fuel, and UK reviews describe a paraffin heater with a removable 4 litre tank. A separate seller page for the Corona RX 2485 name describes battery ignition and a tip cut-off at £199 including VAT. Those lines disagree. Check the live listing before you assume a UK plug or a wick.
What should I check before I light a paraffin heater?
Lock the chimney before you fill a greenhouse heater, and do not light a dry wick. Do not carry it while alight, fill it while alight, or shut every vent. If the alarm sounds, leave. Use NHS 111 for carbon monoxide poisoning, and 999 if breathing is hard or someone is confused, unconscious, weak, or has chest or muscle pain. A chimney that will not stay on means stop and speak to the seller under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Our verdict

The Corona RX 2485 listing is the top pick in this set, at about £189, because UK reviews name a 4 litre tank, about 16 hours turned down and an emergency shut-off, on the largest cabinet review file here (4.0 from 38). The same page still says corded electric, so the power source is not settled. The best value is the Trendi E-SP100 at about £18.95, with 3.7 from 577 reviews and a 4.5 litre tank, for a small greenhouse if you lock the chimney first. Loose screws, soot and a chimney that came off while alight stay in the reviews. Neither pick is a lab result, and neither is for a bedroom or a tent.
