Boat varnish comparison 2026

The best boat varnishes, compared.

Top pick: Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish, 500 ml Best value: Sadolin Yacht Varnish Clear Gloss, 0.75 L – Strongest balance of shelf price, pack size, stated coverage and UV protection: about £15 for 0.75 L, with 13 m² per litre stated, from 43 reviews. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

Boat varnish in UK shops is yacht varnish: a clear or amber solvent-borne film for wood in the weather. You use it on brightwork above the waterline, and on exterior doors, windows and garden furniture. You do not put it underwater, and you do not put it on a deck you walk on. Clear still ambers, and a satin label can dry glossier than you expect, so test a patch. Where the film must not go is in the [boat varnish above the waterline](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/boat-varnish/sub/boat-varnish-above-waterline) guide. One-pack yacht varnish is an alkyd or tung-oil film, in gloss and sometimes satin. Owatrol D2 is the flexible oil varnish, and the listing says you use it after D1, with no sanding between coats.

The best boat varnishes in detail

Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish, 500 ml

Rank 1

Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish, 500 ml

∼£35

Our view

Epifanes Clear Varnish is the specialist high-gloss choice here for bare wood or sound existing varnish above the waterline. Its listing names a UV filter, interior and exterior use, solid wood and plywood, and it has the highest star average in the set at 4.6 from 202 reviews. The finish is transparent amber rather than water-white, so it can warm or yellow pale timber. At £34.99 for 500 ml it is expensive, and the listing gives no square-metre coverage rate. The recorded 0.28 g item weight is clearly unreliable, while the technical sheet also rules out direct application over epoxy. It suits carefully prepared brightwork where finish quality matters more than budget, but not a deck or a bargain job.

Pros

  • Explicitly stated for above-waterline use
  • UV filter named
  • Highest star average in the comparison
  • Suitable over sound existing varnish

Cons

  • Expensive at £34.99 for 500 ml
  • No numeric coverage rate
  • Amber tone can change pale wood
  • Not for direct application over epoxy

Best for: Traditional high-gloss brightwork above the waterline where a specialist finish is worth the cost

Less suitable: Budget projects, walked-on decks, direct epoxy application or anyone wanting a water-white film

Common questions

Can it go below the waterline?

The bullets say interior and exterior use above the waterline. They do not say immersion.

Does the listing claim UV protection?

One bullet says an ultraviolet filter protects the wood against discolouration. No factor is printed.

What coverage does the listing give?

The coverage cell repeats high gloss, UV protection and weather resistance. It is not a square-metre rate.

Ronseal Yacht Varnish Gloss, 1 L

Rank 2

Ronseal Yacht Varnish Gloss, 1 L

∼£25

Our view

Ronseal’s 1-litre gloss tin offers the highest stated coverage in this set at 16 m² per litre, making it practical for a door, outdoor furniture or a run of above-waterline trim. The listing shows 4.5 stars from 1,242 reviews and describes the finish as highly water repellent. At £25, it is competitively priced for a full litre, although the captured review block is duplicated on the 500 ml satin listing and should not be treated as a second independent sample. There is also a model-code conflict: the model and part number say RSLYVG1L, while one bullet says RSLYVS1L. The listing does not make a clear UV claim or approve below-waterline use. Choose it for economical high-gloss exterior wood, but verify the model on arrival.

Pros

  • High stated coverage of 16 m²/L
  • Full 1-litre pack at a competitive price
  • Water-repellent formula named
  • Large headline review count

Cons

  • Model code conflicts within the listing
  • Review text is duplicated on another Ronseal listing
  • No explicit UV or below-waterline claim

Best for: Gloss exterior wood, boat trim and outdoor furniture where a litre of good-coverage varnish is useful

Less suitable: Buyers who need unambiguous listing data or a stated below-waterline coating

Common questions

Does the listing claim UV protection?

Ronseal Exterior Yacht Varnish Satin, 500 ml

Rank 3

Ronseal Exterior Yacht Varnish Satin, 500 ml

∼£16

Our view

This 500 ml Ronseal tin gives you a satin finish, a stated 16 m²-per-litre coverage rate and a highly water-repellent formula in a manageable pack. It is a better fit than a litre tin for a single door, short rail or other modest exterior-wood job. The 4.5-star headline from 1,242 reviews looks reassuring, but the captured 50 review texts are identical to those on the 1-litre gloss listing. The listing also reports six items and calls the material Tin, which weakens confidence in its catalogue data. No explicit UV or above-waterline claim appears in the captured bullets. Buy it for the pack size and satin label, not because the review sample proves this particular variant’s finish.

Pros

  • Convenient 500 ml pack
  • High stated coverage of 16 m²/L
  • Water-repellent formula named
  • Satin alternative to the many gloss tins

Cons

  • Captured reviews duplicate the gloss 1-litre listing
  • Several catalogue fields are unreliable
  • No explicit UV claim

Best for: A small exterior-wood job where you want a satin rather than gloss finish

Less suitable: Buyers relying on variant-specific review evidence or needing stated UV protection

Common questions

Does the listing claim UV protection?

Rustins Yacht Varnish Clear Satin, 1 L

Rank 4

Rustins Yacht Varnish Clear Satin, 1 L

∼£23

Our view

This 1-litre Rustins tin covers a stated 12.5 m² per litre and is aimed at marine and exterior woodwork exposed to sun and saltwater conditions. Its 4.5-star rating from 886 amazon.co.uk reviews gives it one of the stronger evidence bases in this comparison. The satin finish is useful when you want less glare than gloss, while the tung-oil formulation and large pack suit doors, window frames and longer runs of brightwork. However, buyers repeatedly report sediment that needs prolonged stirring, and several say the supposed satin coat dried noticeably glossy. The listing names harsh marine conditions but does not explicitly approve constant immersion or use below the waterline. It is our top pick for a substantial above-waterline or exterior-joinery job, provided you stir thoroughly and test the sheen first.

Pros

  • 1-litre pack with stated coverage of 12.5 m²/L
  • UV exposure and saltwater conditions named on the listing
  • Strong 4.5-star rating from 886 reviews
  • Satin option for lower-glare exterior woodwork

Cons

  • Sediment can require thorough stirring
  • Some buyers report a glossier finish than expected
  • No explicit below-waterline approval

Best for: Larger above-waterline brightwork, exterior doors and window frames where a satin finish is wanted

Less suitable: Immersed timber or anyone who needs a reliably low-sheen result without a patch test

Ronseal Yacht Varnish Gloss, 250 ml

Rank 5

Ronseal Yacht Varnish Gloss, 250 ml

∼£13

Our view

Ronseal’s 250 ml gloss tin is a convenient choice for a tiller, a small patch or a narrow length of exterior trim. Its listing states 16 m² per litre and names UV protection, waterproofing and resistance to cracking, peeling and blistering. A 4.5-star rating from 324 reviews gives it a more credible product-specific evidence base than several small tins here. The trade-off is price: £12.62 is affordable at checkout but works out expensive per litre, and the small quantity disappears quickly on a multi-coat job. Review evidence also indicates that the clear film can darken the wood, so test pale timber first. It is a strong small-job option, but not economical for a door or long rail.

Pros

  • Small pack suits touch-ups
  • UV protection and waterproofing named
  • 16 m²/L stated coverage
  • 4.5 stars from 324 reviews

Cons

  • High price per litre
  • Too small for larger multi-coat work
  • May darken pale wood

Best for: A tiller, small repair or short section of gloss exterior trim

Less suitable: Large doors, long rails or buyers seeking the lowest cost per litre

Sadolin Yacht Varnish Clear Gloss, 0.75 L

Rank 6

Sadolin Yacht Varnish Clear Gloss, 0.75 L

∼£15

Our view

Sadolin’s 750 ml clear gloss tin combines a stated 13 m²-per-litre coverage rate with UV additives and a £15 shelf price. That makes it the best-value option here for exterior joinery when you need more than a touch-up tin but not a full litre. Its 4.5-star rating is based on only 43 reviews, so the evidence is thinner than for the leading Rustins and Ronseal products. The listing says exterior joinery rather than making a broad marine-use promise, and it gives no water-resistance or above-waterline statement. One captured detail also incorrectly lists mounting hardware and a user manual as included components. It suits a budget-conscious gloss job on a door, window or protected brightwork, but the technical sheet should guide any demanding marine application.

Pros

  • Low £15 price for 750 ml
  • UV additives stated
  • Useful 13 m²/L claimed coverage
  • Clear gloss finish for exterior joinery

Cons

  • Only 43 reviews
  • No water-resistance claim on the listing
  • Included-components data is plainly unreliable

Best for: Cost-conscious exterior joinery and modest gloss brightwork jobs

Less suitable: Immersed wood or applications that require an explicit marine water-resistance claim

Owatrol Deks Olje D2, 1 litre

Rank 7

Owatrol Deks Olje D2, 1 litre

∼£41

Our view

Owatrol Deks Olje D2 provides a flexible gloss oil-varnish finish over Deks Olje D1 on interior or exterior wood above the waterline. The 1-litre listing states 10–12 m² coverage and specifically includes tropical hardwoods such as teak, ipe and mahogany. Its 4.4-star rating from 267 reviews is credible, but the £41.49 price does not include the required D1 base treatment. The maker warns that the finish is slippery when wet, so it is unsuitable for decks or other surfaces you walk on. It is also a system choice rather than a substitute for a conventional single-tin varnish, despite the no-sanding-between-coats claim. Pick it for prepared D1-treated hardwood brightwork, and skip it if you want a one-product job.

Pros

  • Designed for tropical hardwood after D1
  • 1-litre pack with stated 10–12 m²/L coverage
  • Explicitly for marine use above the waterline
  • No sanding between coats stated on the listing

Cons

  • Requires Deks Olje D1 first
  • Highest shelf price in the set
  • Slippery when wet and unsuitable underfoot

Best for: D1-treated teak and other tropical-hardwood brightwork above the waterline

Less suitable: Walked-on decks, below-waterline timber or anyone wanting a one-tin system

International Boat Varnish, 375 ml

Rank 8

International Boat Varnish, 375 ml

∼£16

Our view

International’s 375 ml boat varnish is sized for a small repair, tiller or short section of trim rather than a large refinish. The amazon.co.uk page shows 4.4 stars from 31 reviews, but the captured listing provides no product bullets, finish, coverage rate, UV claim or stated use. That lack of detail makes its £15.61 price difficult to compare with better-documented tins. Even the recorded weight of 998 g looks implausible for the titled pack size and should not guide a purchase. The product name alone is not evidence that it is suitable below the waterline or for continuous immersion. Consider it only if the label or manufacturer’s current sheet confirms the finish and application you need.

Pros

  • Small 375 ml pack for limited jobs
  • Recognisable marine-coatings brand
  • 4.4-star headline rating

Cons

  • No captured product bullets
  • No stated finish, coverage or UV protection
  • Implausible weight data
  • Only 31 reviews

Best for: A small touch-up when you can verify the current label and technical sheet separately

Less suitable: Comparison shoppers who need clear coverage, sheen or use information before ordering

Rustins Yacht Varnish Gloss Clear, 500 ml

Rank 9

Rustins Yacht Varnish Gloss Clear, 500 ml

∼£15

Our view

This 500 ml Rustins varnish is a practical size for doors, window frames, cladding or a modest marine brightwork job. The listing states 5–7.5 m² coverage per tin and names tung oil, while the £15.28 price sits in the lower band of this comparison. Confidence is limited by a 4.3-star rating from only 23 reviews and by a finish field that says both gloss and satin even though the title says gloss. The cited BS EN 71-3:1995 line concerns migration of elements from toys; it is not proof of marine durability or food-contact safety. The listing does not print a UV rating or a waterproof test. Choose it when the title, tin label and required gloss finish all match, but do not rely on the standard reference as a performance claim.

Pros

  • Useful 500 ml pack
  • Stated 5–7.5 m² coverage per tin
  • Lower purchase price
  • Marine and exterior woodwork named

Cons

  • Only 23 reviews
  • Finish field conflicts with the gloss title
  • No stated UV or waterproof rating

Best for: Small-to-medium gloss jobs on exterior joinery or above-waterline wood

Less suitable: Buyers who need strong review confidence or an explicit UV-performance claim

How we compared

We scored nine amazon.co.uk listings kept for this boat varnish set. Shelf prices, stars and review counts are the UK listing lines. Each score is an editorial 0–100 figure from the weights below. It is not the star rating times 20, and it is not a varnish test. No tin was lab-tested. A higher score is a rank inside this set for a stated above-waterline job.

1

Listing rating and review confidence

30%

Up to 30 points from the amazon.co.uk star line and how many reviews sit behind it. A high star average on its own does not set the score. Duplicated review text and very small samples lose points.

2

Suitability and protection claims

25%

Up to 25 points when the listing names the place, a UV filter or UV exposure, and a water claim. No explicit below-waterline approval is treated as a limit, not as a pass.

3

Coverage, pack and application clarity

20%

Up to 20 points for a stated coverage rate, a pack that matches a real job, and application notes you can follow. A missing rate or a required companion product lowers the band.

4

Price and value for the stated job

15%

Up to 15 points for the shelf price against the pack and the job the listing actually describes. A small tin can look cheap at the till and still be dear per litre.

5

Listing consistency

10%

Up to 10 points for evidence you can check. Points come off for conflicting model or finish data, implausible weights, and catalogue fields that do not match the title.

Boat varnish buying guide

Boat varnish on a UK shelf is yacht varnish: a clear or amber film for wood in the weather, above the waterline, and not underfoot. Read the place, the sheen and that maker's clock before the star line. None of these nine amazon.co.uk tins was lab-tested. A title that says boat or yacht is not approval for immersion or for a deck.

What is boat varnish?

Boat varnish in UK shops is yacht varnish: a clear or amber solvent-borne film for wood in the weather. You brush it on brightwork above the waterline, and on exterior doors, windows and garden furniture. One-pack yacht varnish in this set is an alkyd or tung-oil film, in gloss and sometimes satin. Owatrol Deks Olje D2 is the flexible oil varnish, and the listing says you use it after Deks Olje D1, with no sanding between coats.

Best for

  • Brightwork above the waterline, where you can stir a satin tin and test the sheen
  • A door, window or bench, when the listing states coverage and you will not walk on the film

Not ideal for

  • Timber below the waterline, a walked-on deck, or a job that needs antifouling
  • A one-tin job on teak when the system you want is Deks Olje D2 after D1

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Varnish underwater or underfoot

These films are for above the waterline. Sadolin's sheet excludes constant immersion. Ronseal's page excludes decking. Owatrol D2 is slippery when wet. Antifouling is a different product. The International title does not fill in a missing use line.

  2. 2

One thick coat, or a borrowed clock

Rustins specifies three coats and about 12 hours, not below 10°C. Ronseal specifies up to three coats and eight hours, above 10°C. Sadolin specifies a 16–24 hour recoat. Epifanes specifies 24 hours at 20°C. Damp wood and a single heavy coat are the usual failures.

  3. 3

Reading satin, or clear, as a guarantee

Clear still ambers. Sadolin notes a light golden colour on light wood. Epifanes is amber transparent. Satin must be stirred, and several Rustins satin reviews say the film dried gloss. Test a patch. BS EN 71-3 on a Rustins sheet is a toy migration test, not a weather approval.

What to weigh up

Place, timber and the old film

High

The first split is where the wood sits. Above the waterline, and not underfoot, is the job. Sadolin's sheet says not for constant immersion. Ronseal's page says not for decking. Owatrol D2 is for marine use above the waterline and is slippery if walked on. Epifanes states interior and exterior use above the waterline. The other listings do not print that line, so do not invent it. Bare wood, intact varnish, teak and epoxy are different surfaces. Teak needs the surface oil wiped off.

Sheen, pack and that maker's clock

High

Gloss and satin are sheens, not two products with the same dry look. Clear still ambers. Stir satin. Several Rustins satin reviews say the coat dried glossy, so a patch on the same timber is the check. The Rustins 500 ml finish cell says gloss and satin while the title says gloss. Confirm the tin in your hand. Pack follows the area. 250–375 ml is a tiller or a touch-up. A litre is a door or a run of rails.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Brightwork above the waterline

You want about a litre of satin for rails, a door or window frames in the weather. The Rustins satin 1 L is about £23.13, with 4.5 from 886 reviews and 12.5 m² per litre stated. It names saltwater conditions and does not approve constant immersion. Stir it. Some buyers say the satin dried glossy.

A door or window on a budget

You want gloss exterior joinery and a lower tin price. The Sadolin clear gloss 0.75 L is about £15, with UV additives and 13 m² per litre stated. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 43 reviews. The bullets say exterior joinery, not a water test. Sadolin's sheet says not for constant immersion.

Specialist high-gloss brightwork

You want a high-gloss film and the listing must say above the waterline. Epifanes Clear Varnish, 500 ml, is about £34.99, with 4.6 from 202 reviews and a UV filter. It is amber, not water-white. The listing gives no numeric coverage, and a distributor sheet says not directly on epoxy.

Common questions about boat varnishes

What is the top pick in this boat varnish comparison?
The top pick is the Rustins Yacht Varnish Clear Satin, 1 L, at about £23.13. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 886 reviews. The listing states 12.5 m² per litre and names exposure to UV and saltwater. It does not explicitly approve constant immersion or use below the waterline. Buyers report sediment that needs a long stir, and some say the satin coat dried glossy. Stir the tin and test the sheen on a patch before you coat a door or a rail.
Which tin is the best value?
The best value is the Sadolin Yacht Varnish Clear Gloss, 0.75 L, at about £15. The listing states 13 m² per litre and names UV additives. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 43 reviews, a thinner sample than the Rustins satin litre and the Ronseal litre. The bullets say exterior joinery. They do not print a water-resistance test or an above-the-waterline line. Sadolin's own sheet says this varnish is not for constant immersion.
Can boat varnish go below the waterline or on a deck?
No. These tins are for wood above the waterline, and not for a surface you walk on. Sadolin's sheet says not for constant immersion. Ronseal's product page says yacht varnish is not for decking. Owatrol Deks Olje D2 is slippery when wet, so the maker rules out decks. Antifouling is a different product. The International 375 ml listing has no captured product bullets, so the title alone is not evidence that the tin may go underwater.
Does clear yacht varnish change the colour of the wood?
It can. Clear still ambers. Sadolin describes a light golden colour on light wood. Epifanes is an amber transparent film, so pale timber can warm or yellow. Satin is a sheen, not a promise that the dried film stays low-glare: several Rustins satin reviews say the coat dried glossy. Stir a satin tin, then test a patch on the same timber, in the same light, before you commit to a door or a run of brightwork.
How many coats, and how long between them?
Follow the maker of the tin you bought. Rustins' February 2018 sheet specifies three coats, the first thinned about 25% with white spirit, about 12 hours between coats, and not below 10°C. Ronseal's retail page specifies up to three coats, eight hours between coats, and application above 10°C. Sadolin specifies touch dry in 4–6 hours, recoat in 16–24 hours, and three coats on new wood. Epifanes specifies 24 hours at 20°C. One thick coat is a usual way to spoil the film.
What does BS EN 71-3 on the Rustins 500 ml tin mean?
BS EN 71-3:1995 is a test for migration of certain elements from toys. It is not a marine durability approval, and it is not evidence of food-contact safety. The Rustins gloss 500 ml listing cites that line. The same listing gives no UV rating and no waterproof test, and the finish cell says both gloss and satin while the title says gloss. Read the claim on the tin you have. Do not treat the standard number as proof the film will stand up to weather.
When should I use white boat paint instead?
Use a clear yacht varnish when you want the grain to show on brightwork, a door or a window above the waterline. Use an opaque coating when the job is painted topsides, a bilge, or a non-slip deck these varnish listings do not cover. Coloured two-pack enamel is not one of these tins. The white boat paint comparison matches white coatings to topsides and bilge. Call a yard for rot, work below the waterline, or an epoxy or two-pack system you cannot match.
How do I dispose of leftover varnish?
Take leftover varnish and white spirit to a household waste recycling centre. Do not pour them down a drain or into the household bin. Councils set their own rules. North Yorkshire Council, for example, accepts paints, thinners and wood preservatives at its centres. Solvent vapour is the acute risk HSE flags for coatings. Brush outdoors rather than spraying in a closed cabin. Rustins' sheet says the varnish is flammable, and Sadolin prints a flash point of 40°C. Read the label on the tin in your hand.
