The best bangkirai oils, compared.

Top pick: Osmo 006 Bangkirai Satin 2.5 L Best value: Osmo 016 Bangkirai Dark 2.5 L – Same captured shelf price as the 006 2.5 litre tin, about £72.31, which is about £28.92 a litre, the lowest in this set. The star line is 4.6 from four reviews. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.Editor

Bangkirai oil sold for a British deck is a pigmented satin exterior decking oil. It is not a food-board oil and it is not a biocidal preservative. UK yards usually invoice the timber as yellow balau. Brooks sheet gives laevis, durability class 2 and about 980 kg/m³. Osmo prints the colours as 006, the natural shade, or 016, the dark shade. Osmo UK says new bangkirai and balau weather for 12 weeks, and tropical species need at least three months. The wait is covered in [when to oil a new deck](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/blog/wait-before-oiling-new-decking). Clear teak oil 007 is a different product. On page it gives little protection against greying. A darker pigment slows greying more than a light or clear coat. How the two shades differ is in the [006 or 016 guide](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/bangkirai-oil/sub/bangkirai-oil-006-or-016).

The best bangkirai oils in detail

Osmo 006 Bangkirai Satin 2.5 L

Rank 1

Osmo 006 Bangkirai Satin 2.5 L

∼£72

Our view

This 2.5-litre tin gives you enough oil for a meaningful decking job, with the listing stating up to 24 m² per litre for one coat and two coats on bare wood. Colour 006 keeps the look in the natural bangkirai family rather than deliberately darkening it. The 12-hour stated drying time means a two-coat job needs suitable weather across more than one day. Its 4.7-star rating from 19 reviews is supported by eight stored UK review bodies, which makes the feedback more relevant than the shared overseas reviews attached to some smaller tins. One yellow-balau owner nevertheless reported needing three coats in a year, so the finish should not be treated as maintenance-free. At £72.31 it costs less per litre than the captured 750 ml tin, but it is excessive for a chair or a colour trial.

Pros

  • 2.5 litres suits a substantial deck rather than a small touch-up
  • Listing states up to 24 m² per litre and a 12-hour drying time
  • Eight stored review bodies are from the United Kingdom
  • Natural 006 shade is intended for bangkirai and balau

Cons

  • A full two-coat job needs a suitable multi-day weather window
  • One yellow-balau reviewer reported needing three coats within a year
  • Too much product for a sample or a small item of furniture

Best for: A medium or large yellow-balau deck where you want the natural 006 shade and a working-size tin

Less suitable: Colour testing, one chair or anyone expecting a maintenance-free coating

Common questions

Does this listing say it protects against insects?

A question on the page asks about insects. The bullets do not claim insect protection. They say the finish is safe for humans, animals and plants once dry.

What coverage and drying time does the listing give?

Up to 24 m² per litre with one coat. Initial protection is two coats. A recoat is one coat with no sanding. The drying time on this listing is 12 hours.

Can it be used on outdoor furniture?

The bullets name garden decking, terraces and outdoor furniture.

Osmo 006 Bangkirai Oil 0.75 L

Rank 2

Osmo 006 Bangkirai Oil 0.75 L

∼£24

Our view

This 750 ml tin is a manageable quantity for a small deck section, bench or several items of garden furniture in the natural 006 shade. Its listing supplies unusually useful planning figures: 24 m² per litre for one coat, two coats, an 8–10-hour drying time and an application range of +5°C to 35°C. Those temperature and drying figures differ from Osmo UK's broader guidance of +10°C to 35°C and about 12 hours, so the current UK instructions should take priority. The 4.6-star line is based on 138 ratings, but the 19 stored review bodies are from Germany, France and the Netherlands rather than the UK. At £23.82, the tin costs about £31.76 per litre, more than the captured 2.5-litre tins but with a much lower outlay. It is a sensible middle size when 125 ml is not enough and 2.5 litres would leave substantial surplus.

Pros

  • Useful middle size for small decking and furniture projects
  • Listing states coverage, two coats and drying time
  • Lower upfront cost than a 2.5-litre tin
  • Natural 006 shade for bangkirai and balau

Cons

  • Stored review bodies are not from the United Kingdom
  • Listing temperature and drying figures differ from Osmo UK guidance
  • Higher captured cost per litre than the 2.5-litre tins

Best for: A small project that needs more than a sample but is unlikely to use a full 2.5-litre tin

Less suitable: A large two-coat deck or buyers seeking a clearly UK-based review sample

Common questions

What coverage, coats and drying time does this listing print?

About 24 m² per litre with one coat, two coats, and about 8–10 hours. The application temperature on this listing is +5°C to 35°C.

Does the listing say it is waterproof or blocks UV?

The page asks both questions. The bullets do not answer them.

Are the stored reviews from the United Kingdom?

The star line is 4.6 from 138. The 19 stored review bodies are from Germany, France and the Netherlands. The same bodies are stored on the 125 ml 006 listing.

Osmo 006 Bangkirai Oil 125 ml

Rank 3

Osmo 006 Bangkirai Oil 125 ml

∼£15

Our view

This 125 ml tin lets you test the natural 006 shade across more than one board without committing to a 750 ml or 2.5-litre pack. At £14.99 it is cheaper than the captured 125 ml dark tin, although neither small pack offers good value per litre. The 4.6-star line from 138 ratings looks reassuring at first glance. However, the stored review bodies match those on the 750 ml listing, are not from the UK and sometimes discuss other pack sizes. The captured listing also omits coverage, coat count and drying time, so it is not a sound basis for planning a complete deck. Use it as a colour trial or for a very small job, then choose the working tin from measured area and current UK guidance.

Pros

  • Enough oil to trial 006 on several boards
  • Lower captured price than the 125 ml 016 tin
  • Avoids committing to a large tin before checking the shade

Cons

  • Stored reviews are shared, non-UK and may concern other pack sizes
  • No captured coverage, coat count or drying time
  • Expensive per litre for a working project

Best for: A broader colour trial of 006 or a very small touch-up after checking compatibility

Less suitable: A full deck or buyers treating the 138-rating line as evidence about this exact 125 ml tin

Common questions

What size and colour is this tin?

125 ml, colour 006 Bangkirai Oil. The part number is 006A. The price in the saved listing is £14.99.

Does the listing state coverage?

No. Coverage, drying time and coat count are not in this saved listing.

Do the 138 reviews describe this 125 ml tin?

The star line says 4.6 from 138. The stored bodies match the 0.75 litre file. Several of them discuss a 750 ml or 2.5 litre tin.

Osmo 016 Bangkirai Dark 2.5 L

Rank 4

Osmo 016 Bangkirai Dark 2.5 L

∼£72

Our view

This 2.5-litre tin is the working-size option for a deck or several pieces of garden furniture when you want the darker 016 shade. The captured price is £72.31, the same as the 006 tin of the same size, so the colour choice does not carry a premium in this set. The listing describes a pigmented finish that resists water and dirt and does not crack, peel or flake. Its 4.6-star score comes from only four ratings, however, and the stored evidence includes just one UK review line. More importantly, this captured listing does not state coverage, coat count or drying time, so you need to check the current UK instructions before planning the job. Choose it for a deliberately deeper tone, not because the limited rating sample proves it performs better than 006.

Pros

  • Working-size 2.5-litre tin for decking or several furniture pieces
  • Dark 016 pigment offers a deeper colour than 006
  • Same captured shelf price as the 2.5-litre 006 tin
  • Listing claims a water- and dirt-resistant finish

Cons

  • Only four ratings and one stored UK review line
  • Captured listing omits coverage, coat count and drying time
  • Dark colour should be trialled because timber tone affects the result

Best for: A deck or garden-furniture project where you have already trialled and chosen the darker 016 shade

Less suitable: Buyers who need complete application figures on the Amazon listing or want a natural-looking shade

Common questions

Is this the dark shade?

The title and colour line say Bangkirai Dark, colour code 016, in a 2.5 litre size.

Does the listing give coverage or a drying time?

No. Coverage, coat count and drying time are not in this saved listing.

What does the listing say it is for?

A pigmented exterior finish, especially for garden furniture and decking. It says the surface becomes water and dirt resistant.

Osmo 016 Bangkirai Oil Dark 2.5 L

Rank 5

Osmo 016 Bangkirai Oil Dark 2.5 L

∼£72

Our view

This listing offers 2.5 litres of dark 016 bangkirai oil, a practical volume for decking rather than a test patch. It is captured at £72.31, or about £28.92 per litre, but the price and title carry most of the useful information. The only feature line says the oil is water repellent. There is no Amazon star line, and the captured page gives no coverage, coat count, drying time or stated use. That lack of specification makes it harder to plan confidently than the better-documented 006 listing, even though the pack size and colour may be right. Buy only after confirming the current UK product instructions and that this exact listing is the intended dark decking oil.

Pros

  • 2.5-litre size is suitable for a working decking quantity
  • Dark 016 shade for buyers who want a deeper tone
  • Lowest captured price per litre band in the comparison
  • Listing makes a water-repellent claim

Cons

  • No Amazon rating or stored review evidence
  • No captured coverage, coat count or drying time
  • Sparse listing makes exact product comparison difficult

Best for: A buyer who specifically needs a 2.5-litre 016 tin and will verify the current technical instructions before ordering

Less suitable: Anyone relying on the listing for application planning or review-backed reassurance

Osmo 016 Bangkirai Dark 125 ml

Rank 6

Osmo 016 Bangkirai Dark 125 ml

∼£18

Our view

This 125 ml tin gives you enough dark 016 oil to assess the shade on several boards or finish a very small item. It is more useful than a 5 ml sachet when you need to see how the colour varies across the timber rather than on a single spot. The captured price is £17.50, which is high per litre but keeps the commitment below the cost of a working tin. There is no Amazon star line and no captured coverage, coat-count or drying information. As a result, it should be treated as a trial or minor-job size rather than a confidently specified deck purchase. If the trial colour works, calculate the full job separately before moving to a larger tin.

Pros

  • Practical quantity for trialling the dark 016 shade
  • More scope than a 5 ml sachet for checking board-to-board variation
  • Lower commitment than buying 2.5 litres before seeing the colour

Cons

  • No Amazon star line
  • No captured coverage, coat count or drying time
  • Poor value per litre for anything beyond a trial or tiny repair

Best for: Testing the 016 shade on your own yellow-balau boards or coating a very small furniture item

Less suitable: A complete deck, a large furniture set or anyone needing review-backed performance evidence

Osmo 006 Bangkirai 5 ml

Rank 7

Osmo 006 Bangkirai 5 ml

Our view

This 5 ml pack is a colour sample for checking 006 on your own timber, not a usable tin for a deck. The tiny quantity is helpful because yellow balau varies naturally and the final warm satin tone cannot be judged reliably from a screen. Its £6.15 captured price is the lowest checkout cost in the set, but it is by far the wrong basis for comparing price per litre. The listing supplies no Amazon star line, coverage, coat count or drying time. You may also need more than one test spot if boards differ markedly in colour or weathering. Use it to approve the shade, then calculate a separate 750 ml or 2.5-litre purchase for the actual work.

Pros

  • Low-commitment way to see 006 on the actual timber
  • Useful for checking colour before buying a working tin
  • Lowest captured shelf price in the comparison

Cons

  • Only 5 ml, so it is not a working quantity
  • No Amazon rating or application figures
  • One sample may not show variation across the whole deck

Best for: A small, inconspicuous colour test before ordering a larger 006 tin

Less suitable: Any maintenance coat, furniture project or deck application

How we compared

We compared seven Osmo bangkirai oil listings on amazon.co.uk. Prices, stars and review counts are the captured UK lines, not a live check on 15 October 2026. Scores are editorial ranks inside this set from the weights below. They are not the star rating times 20, and they are not a laboratory test.

1

Coverage, coats and drying time

30%

Whether the amazon.co.uk listing states coverage, a coat count and a drying time. The 2.5 litre 006 tin and the 750 ml 006 tin do. Several other listings do not, so you cannot plan the job from the page.

2

Review evidence

25%

The star line in the file, and whether stored review bodies are from the United Kingdom. A shared overseas set counts for less. No star line is a missing figure, not a rating of zero stars.

3

Shade and pack size

25%

A stated 006 or 016 shade, and a pack that matches the job: 5 ml or 125 ml for a trial, 750 ml for a small section, 2.5 litres for a deck.

4

Price per litre

20%

Captured shelf price divided by pack size. The 2.5 litre tins are about £28.92 a litre. A 5 ml sample is not treated as a working-tin bargain.

Bangkirai oil buying guide

Choose the shade and the tin size before the brand story. Every product here is an Osmo bangkirai oil. The split is 006 or 016, and 5 ml through to 2.5 litres. Several listings omit coverage and drying time, so a complete Amazon page is part of the choice.

What bangkirai oil is for

Bangkirai oil for a deck in the UK is a pigmented satin exterior oil. Osmo’s colours for this timber are 006, the natural shade, and 016, the dark shade. Clear teak oil 007 is a different product. On Osmo’s page it gives little protection against greying. A darker pigment slows greying more than a light or clear coat. How the two shades differ is in the [006 or 016 guide](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/bangkirai-oil/sub/bangkirai-oil-006-or-016).

Best for

  • A medium or large yellow-balau deck in 006, where you want a 2.5 litre tin with coverage and drying time on the listing
  • A deck where you have already trialled 016 and you want the lowest price per litre in this set

Not ideal for

  • A colour sample, one chair, or a food-board job
  • New boards in the first weeks, grey boards, or a film-forming varnish

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Oiling in the first week

Osmo UK says bangkirai and balau weather for 12 weeks, and tropical species need at least three months. New extractive-rich boards are not a week-one job.

  2. 2

    Oiling over grey, or jet-washing

Silvered boards need a reviver, not oil over grey. Jet-washing and thinning are listed mistakes. Recoat is one coat when wear shows, after a check at least yearly.

  3. 3

Copying another oil’s figures onto Osmo

Treatex uses different moisture and coverage figures and is not in this ASIN set. Teak oil 007, garapa, thermowood and chopping-board oil are different products. Do not mix those numbers with Osmo’s 20% moisture and 24 m² per litre.

What to weigh up

Shade, then the wait

High

006 is the natural shade Osmo and Southgate both point at for this timber. 016 is the dark shade. Darker pigment slows greying more than a light or clear coat. Clear teak oil 007 gives little protection against greying on Osmo’s page. Weather new bangkirai for 12 weeks, and treat three months as the tropical-species line on the same page.

Litres against the listing

High

Osmo states about 24 m² per litre for one coat on smooth wood, less on ribbed or rough boards, and two thin coats on bare wood. Southgate’s two-coat areas are 13.5 m² from 0.75 litres and 45 m² from 2.5 litres. The 2.5 litre tins are about £28.92 a litre. The 750 ml 006 tin is about £31.76 a litre and about £23.82 at the till. A 5 ml pack is a colour sample, not a per-litre bargain.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A natural-shade deck

You have a medium or large yellow-balau deck and you want 006. The Osmo 006 Bangkirai Satin 2.5 L tin is about £72.31, with 4.7 from 19 reviews. The listing states up to 24 m² per litre and a 12-hour dry. One reviewer still needed three coats in a year.

Dark shade, already trialled

You have checked 016 on your own boards and you want a working tin. The Osmo 016 Bangkirai Dark 2.5 L tin is about £72.31, the same price as the 006 tin of this size. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from four reviews, and the listing omits coverage and drying time.

A small section or furniture

You need more than a sample and less than 2.5 litres of 006. The Osmo 006 Bangkirai Oil 0.75 L tin is about £23.82. The listing states 24 m² per litre, two coats and 8–10 hours. The 4.6 from 138 line is not a United Kingdom review sample.

Common questions about bangkirai oils

What is the top pick in this bangkirai oil comparison?
The top pick is the Osmo 006 Bangkirai Satin 2.5 L tin, B0791DGTYP, at about £72.31. The amazon.co.uk listing states up to 24 m² per litre for one coat, two coats on bare wood, and a 12-hour drying time. The star line is 4.7 from 19 reviews, and eight stored review bodies are from the United Kingdom. One yellow-balau reviewer still needed three coats in a year, so it is not a maintenance-free coating. Skip it for a colour trial or a single chair.
Which tin is the best value?
The best value is the Osmo 016 Bangkirai Dark 2.5 L tin, B0791DX2F4, at about £72.31, about £28.92 a litre. That matches the 2.5 litre 006 tin and is the lowest price per litre in this set. The star line is 4.6 from four reviews, with one stored United Kingdom line. The captured listing does not state coverage, coats or drying time. Buy it after a colour trial on your own boards.
Should you choose 006 or 016?
006 is the natural shade. Osmo and Southgate Timber both point it at bangkirai and yellow balau. 016 is the dark shade. A darker pigment slows greying more than a light or clear coat. Clear teak oil 007 is a different product and, on Osmo’s page, gives little protection against greying. If that is the oil you are weighing up, see the teak oil comparison. Trial 006 or 016 on your own boards, because yellow balau varies and a screen will not show the satin tone.
How much bangkirai oil do you need?
Osmo UK states about 24 m² per litre for one coat on smooth wood, less on ribbed or rough boards, and two thin coats on bare wood. Southgate prints a two-coat area of 13.5 m² from 0.75 litres and 45 m² from 2.5 litres. The 750 ml 006 tin at about £23.82 suits a small section. The 2.5 litre tins suit a deck. Osmo’s 35 ml/m² figure is not the same as 24 m² per litre.
When can you oil a new yellow-balau deck?
Osmo UK says bangkirai and balau weather for 12 weeks, and the same page says tropical species, including bangkirai, need at least three months. Do not oil new extractive-rich boards in week one. Keep the timber at or below 20% moisture, do not thin the oil, and stir it. The ideal air temperature on the Osmo page is +10°C to 35°C. Recoat with one coat when wear shows, and check at least yearly. Spring and autumn is Southgate’s advice for high sun, not a fixed national interval.
Does bangkirai oil stop insects, rot or slipping?
These tins do not claim to kill insects, stop rot, or suit food or toys. Osmo says the finish is safe for humans, animals and plants once it is dry. That limit does not cover wet oil. Slip resistance is not stated on these amazon.co.uk listings. A pendulum value of 36 to BS 7976-3 belongs to enhanced-grip boards, not to the oil. Call a professional if boards are soft or loose, or the deck is a workplace.
Are the 138 reviews a UK sample for the small 006 tins?
The 4.6 from 138 line appears on the 750 ml 006 tin and the 125 ml 006 tin. The stored review bodies match across those files and come from Germany, France and the Netherlands, not the United Kingdom. Some of them discuss a different pack size. Three listings have no star line at all: the second 016 2.5 litre tin, the 125 ml 016 tin, and the 5 ml sample. Voltage and wattage on some Amazon tables are not data for an oil.

Our verdict

The top pick is Osmo 006 Bangkirai Oil 0.75 L, with the highest score in this comparison (7.4 out of 10, from 138 amazon.co.uk reviews). The best value is the Osmo 016 Bangkirai Dark 2.5 L tin at the same shelf price, about £28.92 a litre. That is the price per litre on the dark shade, with 4.6 from four reviews, not a larger review sample. The other 016 2.5 litre listing has no star line.
