Osmo 006 or 016 for bangkirai decking?

Updated: October 2026

You have chosen an oil made for bangkirai or yellow balau, but the shelf still presents two plausible codes. The Osmo 006 or 016 decision is primarily about appearance: 006 is the natural bangkirai shade, while 016 is Bangkirai Dark. Our [bangkirai oil comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/bangkirai-oil) shows the captured tins and sizes. This page explains what becoming darker changes, what it does not guarantee, and why a trial on your own boards matters more than a colour patch on a screen.

What Osmo 006 and 016 are

Osmo 006 is a warm, transparent-looking pigmented satin shade intended to sit naturally with bangkirai and balau. Natural does not mean clear: the oil contains colour that helps maintain the visual character of the timber while leaving grain visible. Choose it when you want the deck to remain closer to its familiar golden-brown or light-brown family rather than deliberately deepening it. The starting timber still affects the outcome, so 006 may look lighter or browner than expected. Osmo 016 is Bangkirai Dark. It suits the same broad exterior uses but adds a deeper tone, which can make variation between boards less prominent and give an older deck a richer appearance after correct preparation. It is not a quality upgrade from 006, and the code does not mean a thicker or more durable film. In the captured Amazon set, the 2.5-litre 006 and 016 listings were all £72.31, so shade was not a price grade. Both products are penetrating pigmented decking oils rather than opaque paint. Neither should be selected from a digital swatch alone. The bangkirai oil buying guide covers sample and working pack sizes.

What changes when you choose the darker shade

The practical difference is that 016 deposits a darker pigment than 006. Osmo says darker colour slows greying more than a light or clear coating, but it does not make the deck UV-proof. Exposure and maintenance still affect how the surface changes. 006 is often the safer starting point when you like the original yellow-balau colour and want a warmer, less dramatic shift. 016 makes more sense when you deliberately want depth or when your trial shows that 006 is too pale against the house, furniture or existing boards. Do not assume that going darker hides poor preparation. Grey surface fibres need a suitable wood reviver before oiling if the aim is to restore colour, and dirt or old incompatible coatings must be removed correctly. Shade choice comes after the timber is ready, not instead of preparation.

Where clear 007 fits

Osmo 007 Teak Oil appears in the same decking-oil family, but it answers a different question. It is clear rather than a bangkirai-coloured alternative, and Osmo says it offers little protection against greying. Choose it only when you accept or want the timber to develop a silver-grey patina and understand that a clear coat will not preserve the freshly laid colour in the same way as pigmented 006 or 016. This distinction prevents a common buying mistake. Teak oil can sound like a general label for any tropical hardwood, but a product name does not make it the colour-equivalent of 006 or 016. Bangkirai, balau and teak are not interchangeable search terms, and chopping-board oils are another category again. The correct shortlist is based on the stated exterior use and desired pigment, not simply the word oil.

Which captured tin contains each shade

The captured 006 products run from a 5 ml sample to the 2.5-litre B0791DGTYP tin. The 5 ml and 125 ml sizes suit colour trials or tiny jobs. The 750 ml size may fit a small area, while 2.5 litres is the working quantity for a larger deck, subject to measurement and surface texture. The captured 016 products are the 125 ml trial tin and the 2.5-litre B0791DX2F4 listing. Confirm the exact current listing and instructions rather than assuming similar dark titles contain equally complete information. The decision is straightforward once the limits are clear. Choose 006 when you want the natural bangkirai direction and your trial confirms the tone. Choose 016 when you want a visibly darker finish and accept that pigment slows rather than stops greying. If you have not tested either, buy a sample before a full tin; the timber itself is the final colour chart. The best bangkirai oil for each job matches each captured size to decks, furniture and trials.

Common questions

Which code is the natural bangkirai shade?
Osmo 006 is the natural bangkirai shade that Osmo points to for bangkirai and balau. It is pigmented rather than clear, so expect a warm colour contribution while the grain remains visible.
Will Osmo 016 stop the deck turning grey?
No. Osmo says a darker colour slows greying more than a lighter or clear finish, but it does not promise that 016 prevents weathering. Wear, sunlight, preparation and maintenance still influence the result.
Is Osmo 006 a clear oil?
No. It is a pigmented natural shade. Osmo 007 Teak Oil is the clear option in the range, and Osmo says a clear finish gives little protection against greying.
Do 006 and 016 need different numbers of coats?
The colour decision does not create a different basic coating system. Osmo UK's decking-oil guidance specifies two thin coats on bare timber, with the current label and UK product sheet governing application conditions.
Will the shade look identical on every board?
No. Natural timber tone, grain, weathering and preparation affect the dried colour. Test an inconspicuous area across representative boards, not just one unusually light or dark piece, before coating the whole deck.
Is anti-slip oil an alternative to 006 or 016?
No. Osmo presents Anti-slip Decking Oil 430 as a second coat over a coloured oil, not as the colour coat itself. It does not remove the need to choose and trial 006 or 016.
