Pebble dash comparison 2026

The best pebble dash products, compared.

Top pick: Harling trowel, 165 mm Best value: Sandtex Olive masonry paint, 5 litres – Highest value among the rest: 8.3 minus log10(33.08 + 1) is 6.7675, at about £33.08. Updated 22 October 2026.

Pebble dash, also called dry dash, throws clean stones onto a fresh butter coat so the stone colour stays visible. Roughcast, wet dash and much Scottish harling mix the aggregate into the mortar first. Tyrolean is a finer flicked texture from a hopper, not dry dash. In the UK you buy it for one of three jobs: paint a sound wall, patch lost stones, or cast a new coat. A sleeve does not glue stones, and a trowel does not mix the butter coat. Smooth masonry paint is a film. Brush off loose stones first. How dry dash differs from roughcast is set out in [pebble dash or roughcast](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/pebble-dash/sub/pebble-dash-vs-roughcast). A sound wall needs a roller core that fits the frame you already own, and a pile that reaches between the stones. A harling trowel only throws aggregate you supply. A masonry tin should name the surface, print a coverage figure with a unit, and state a dry time. An unanswered question about pebble dash is not a yes.

The best pebble dash products in detail

Harling trowel, 165 mm

Rank 1

Harling trowel, 165 mm

∼£12

Our view

This is a 165 mm harling trowel from BARGAINWORLDUK, part p272, at about £11.99. The listing says it is for throwing pebbles onto external walls for rough cast or pebble dash, with a hardwood handle on a riveted tang. There is no weight, no steel grade and no review paragraph. The star line is 5.0 from one rating, which is not evidence that a patch will match. The page asks about materials, interior walls and grip, and stores no answers. This is the throwing tool only.

Pros

  • Use line names pebble dash and rough cast
  • Hardwood handle and riveted tang stated
  • About £11.99

Cons

  • No blade material or weight
  • One star and no review text
  • Stones and butter coat are not in the pack

Best for: You already have matching aggregate and a sound patch, and you only need the throwing trowel.

Less suitable: You wanted paint, or a trowel with a written review of the blade.

Common questions

What is this trowel for?

The listing says it applies pebbles to external walls for a rough-cast or pebble-dash finish. It does not include aggregate or render.

Can it be used on interior walls?

The page asks that question. The listing does not record an answer. The use line says external walls.

What is the handle made of?

The bullet says a hardwood handle fastened to the blade by a riveted tang. The blade material is not stated.

Axus Captain Chunk sleeve, 44 mm core

Rank 2

Axus Captain Chunk sleeve, 44 mm core

∼£13

Our view

The Axus Captain Chunk sleeve is the 230 mm extra-long pile with a 44 mm core, at about £12.99. The listing names pebble dash and masonry, and the first 50 UK reviews are the only ones in this table that describe painting dash, Tyrolean and sharp K-Rend. Buyers praise the foam centre for pushing paint into the stones and say it beat a brush. They also say a loaded sleeve is heavy on a pole, that loose stones stick in the pile, that bristles tear on jagged render, and that the core missed at least one existing frame. The pack is the sleeve only. Weight on the listing is 180 g.

Pros

  • Title and bullet name pebble dash
  • 4.6 from 324 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Review text covers dash and Tyrolean

Cons

  • Heavy once loaded, especially on a pole
  • 44 mm core did not fit every frame in the reviews
  • Bristles tore on sharp render

Best for: You are painting sound pebble dash or Tyrolean and you already have a frame that takes a 44 mm core.

Less suitable: You need a 38 mm frame, or the stones are already loose.

Dash and Tyrolean

Common questions

Is this sleeve sold for pebble dash?

Yes. The title and a bullet name masonry and pebble dash. Reviews describe pebble dash, Tyrolean and sharp K-Rend.

Which roller frame does the 44 mm core need?

The size line is a 44 mm core and the pack does not include a frame. Reviews include a sleeve that would not fit the buyer's existing handle, and one that kept falling off.

Does the listing limit it to one paint type?

The bullets say oil-based and acrylic paints. The page also asks whether it works with all paints, and the listing does not record an answer.

Sandtex Olive masonry paint, 5 litres

Rank 3

Sandtex Olive masonry paint, 5 litres

∼£33

Our view

Sandtex Olive is a 5 litre acrylic masonry tin at about £33.08, about £6.62 per litre, with the UK named as country of origin. The page says brick and concrete, matt, dry in 4 hours, full cure 7 days, and coverage 12 with no unit. It asks whether the paint can be used on pebble dash and whether it needs a primer, and the listing has no answers. Special features say waterproof while the water-resistance line says not water resistant. A brush is listed as included, and one reviewer did not receive one. The 21 reviews like the thickness on garden walls. None of them describes a dashed elevation. One buyer said the colour did not dry as olive.

Pros

  • Lowest price per litre in this paint set
  • 4.6 from 75 reviews
  • UK origin stated on the listing

Cons

  • Pebble-dash question is unanswered
  • Waterproof and not water resistant both printed
  • Coverage has no unit

Best for: You want a 5 litre olive masonry tin at this shelf price and you will check the tin for pebble dash yourself.

Less suitable: You need the listing to confirm pebble dash, or a single water-resistance line.

Common questions

Can it be used on pebble dash?

The listing asks that question. The listing does not record an answer. The surface line says brick and concrete.

Is it waterproof?

One field says waterproof. Another says not water resistant. Both are on the listing. The page also asks whether it is weatherproof and does not store an answer.

What do the reviews cover?

Twenty-one reviews talk about garden walls, a garage, a summer house and a block wall. They do not describe a pebble-dash house. One buyer said the olive did not dry as olive. One order had no brush.

HQC Weather Shield, ivory, 2.5 litres

Rank 4

HQC Weather Shield, ivory, 2.5 litres

∼£45

Our view

HQC Weather Shield ivory is the 2.5 litre tin at about £44.90, about £17.96 per litre. The listing says acrylic, exterior, smooth, waterproof, dry in 2 hours, weight 2.5 kg, and coverage of 10 square metres per litre. Pebble dash is not named. A brush is listed as included. Full cure is blank, unlike the 24 hours on the 1 litre listing. The star line is 4.6 from three reviews and there is no review paragraph, so colour-shift stories from the 1 litre listing are not evidence about this ivory tin. The two HQC coverage figures stay separate.

Pros

  • Larger pack than the 1 litre HQC tin
  • Waterproof field on the listing
  • Lower price per litre than the 1 litre tin

Cons

  • Pebble dash is not named
  • Only three stars and no review text
  • Coverage line disagrees with the 1 litre HQC listing

Best for: You want this ivory in 2.5 litres and you accept that the page does not mention pebble dash.

Less suitable: You need review text, or you are using the 1 litre coverage figure for this tin.

Common questions

Does this ivory tin name pebble dash?

No. The listing says exterior walls. The bullets match the 1 litre HQC page and do not add a pebble-dash line.

What coverage and dry time are printed?

Coverage is 10 square metres per litre and dry time is 2 hours. Full cure is not on this listing. The 1 litre listing says up to 6 m² per litre and 3 hours.

Are there written reviews?

The star line is 4.6 from 3 reviews. The listing has no review text.

HQC Weather Shield, baby pink, 1 litre

Rank 5

HQC Weather Shield, baby pink, 1 litre

∼£25

Our view

HQC Weather Shield baby pink is a 1 litre acrylic masonry tin at about £24.90, with a brush listed as included. The page says exterior walls, matt, waterproof, dry in 3 hours, full cure in 24 hours, and coverage up to 6 m² per litre, and it does not name pebble dash. The star line is 4.4 from 1,766 reviews. In the first 50, people painted patios, fences, sheds and brick more often than a dashed house. Praise is coverage, low odour and water clean-up, while the repeated complaint is that the dried film did not match the picture. One reviewer said two coats washed off, and one tin arrived unsealed. An age-range field of children is on the page and is not a use instruction.

Pros

  • 4.4 from 1,766 reviews
  • Low-odour and water clean-up in the reviews
  • Waterproof field on the listing

Cons

  • Pebble dash is not named
  • Dried colour often missed the photo
  • About £24.90 per litre

Best for: You need a 1 litre trial of this baby pink on a small exterior wall and you can live with a colour swatch first.

Less suitable: You need a tin whose own page names pebble dash, or a lower price per litre.

Common questions

Does this listing say pebble dash?

No. The surface line says walls, and the use line says exterior. The questions on the page are brick, mould and waterproof.

What coverage does the listing print?

Up to 6 m² per litre. The 2.5 litre HQC listing prints 10 square metres per litre. Those lines are not averaged.

What do the reviews say about colour?

The first 50 reviews praise coverage and low odour. Several say the dried film shifted from the photo, including orange, purple, mint and a stronger green. One tin leaked. One film lifted the next day.

Axus Captain Chunk sleeve, 38 mm core

Rank 6

Axus Captain Chunk sleeve, 38 mm core

∼£13

Our view

This is the Axus Captain Chunk sleeve in a 38 mm core, at about £12.54, part AXI/RO938XXL, 183 g. The title and bullets match the 44 mm sleeve: extra-long pile, foam padding, masonry and pebble dash, oil-based and acrylic paints. The listing has no customer-review line and no review text, so the complaints about weight, loose stones and frames belong to the 44 mm listing only. Buy this core when the frame you already own is 38 mm. Do not treat the missing stars as a zero-star product.

Pros

  • 38 mm core for a matching frame
  • Title names pebble dash
  • About £12.54

Cons

  • No star line on the listing
  • No review text to compare with the 44 mm sleeve
  • Frame not included

Best for: You need the extra-long pile and your frame is a 38 mm core.

Less suitable: You want review evidence about dash. That text is on the 44 mm listing.

Common questions

How is this sleeve different from the 44 mm Captain Chunk?

The listing gives a 38 mm core, part AXI/RO938XXL, 183 g, and about £12.54. The other sleeve is a 44 mm core. The marketing bullets match. This listing has no star line and no review text.

Does the page say it is for pebble dash?

Yes. The title and a bullet name pebble dash and rough masonry, with foam padding so you can press into the surface.

Is a frame included?

Included components says paint roller. A frame is not listed.

How we compared

Six amazon.co.uk listings were scored on 21 October 2026 from the saved star lines. This is not a laboratory test. At least 20 reviews: round(stars × 18), capped at 92. Fewer than 20 reviews: stars × 12, capped at 60. No star line scores 0. A waterproof field is not scored as proof the film survives a dashed wall. An unanswered pebble-dash question is a question, not a yes. Two listings share 83. The set mixes roller sleeves, a harling trowel and masonry paint, so the score method assigns no top pick and no best value. Prices are the amazon.co.uk shelf prices on that date.

1

Amazon star score

100%

The whole score is the star line. At least 20 reviews: round(stars × 18), capped at 92. Fewer than 20 reviews: stars × 12, capped at 60. No star line scores 0. The cap of 92, or 60 on a thin file, is the ceiling. It is not a second weight added on top.

Pebble dash buying guide

Read the job on the label before the price. A sleeve, a harling trowel and a smooth masonry tin are not the same purchase. An unanswered pebble-dash question is not a yes, and a waterproof field is not a test on dashed walls.

What is pebble dash?

Pebble dash, or dry dash, throws clean stones onto a fresh butter coat so the stone colour stays visible. Roughcast and wet dash throw a mix that already contains the stones. Harling usually means that wet method. Spar dash is dry dash with spar chippings. Tyrolean is a machine-flicked honeycomb, not dry dash. Smooth masonry paint can coat a sound wall of any of these. It does not recreate the stones. A sleeve does not glue stones. A trowel does not mix the butter coat.

Best for

  • A sound dashed wall you will coat, after loose stones are brushed off
  • A small bald patch where you already have matching aggregate and only need a throwing trowel

Not ideal for

  • A hollow, damp, listed or widespread failure, or hacking the dash off
  • A bag of stones, a butter coat, or a tin whose page must name pebble dash before you buy

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Paint on hollow dash

Tap for hollow areas and brush off loose stones before you buy paint. A film does not glue stones back, and it does not recreate a failed coat.

  2. 2

    One frame for both cores

The two extra-long sleeves are both 230 mm, but one core is 44 mm and the other is 38 mm. Reviews of the 44 mm sleeve include frames that would not take it. The pack is the sleeve only.

  3. 3

One coverage figure for every tin

One HQC listing says up to 6 m² per litre and the other says 10 m² per litre. Olive prints 12 with no unit. Do not average them, and do not use a smooth-wall rate on stones.

What to weigh up

Job, soundness and the words on the listing

High

Paint a sound wall, patch lost stones, or cast a new coat. A sleeve does not glue stones. A trowel does not mix the butter coat. Smooth masonry paint is a film, and the stones stay proud. Tap for hollow areas and brush off loose stones before you buy paint. Sandtex Olive asks whether it can be used on pebble dash, and the listing stores no answer. Its surface line says brick and concrete. The HQC listings say exterior walls, not pebble dash. Sandtex Microseal does list pebbledash.

Core, coverage and the weather on the tin

High

Both extra-long sleeves are 230 mm. One is a 44 mm core and one is a 38 mm core. Reviews of the 44 mm sleeve include frames that would not take it. Do not copy those reviews onto the 38 mm listing, which has no star line. Read coverage as printed: up to 6 m² per litre on one HQC tin, 10 m² per litre on the other, and 12 with no unit on Olive. Do not average them. Dulux Trade Weathershield smooth, not a row here, prints about 4 to 6 m² per litre on pebbledash.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Sound dashed wall

You are coating a sound dashed wall and you already have a frame that takes a 44 mm core. The Axus Captain Chunk 44 mm sleeve is about £12.99, 4.6 from 324 reviews, and the review text names pebble dash, Tyrolean and sharp K-Rend. A loaded sleeve is heavy on a pole, and bristles tore on sharp render. The pack is the sleeve only.

Bald patch

You have a bald patch, matching aggregate and a sound background. The 165 mm harling trowel is about £11.99 and is sold for throwing pebbles onto external walls. Stones and the butter coat are not in the pack. The star line is 5.0 from one rating, with no review text, so it is not evidence that a patch will match.

Solid or listed wall

You own a solid-wall or listed house. Do not lock a hard cement coat over a wall that has to dry, and do not hack the dash off. A film on a sound wall is a different job from a new coat. HQC Weather Shield baby pink is a 1 litre exterior tin at about £24.90, 4.4 from 1,766 reviews. The listing does not name pebble dash, and dried colour often missed the photo.

Common questions about pebble dash products

What is pebble dash?
Pebble dash, or dry dash, throws clean stones onto a fresh butter coat so the stone colour stays visible. Roughcast, wet dash and much Scottish harling mix the aggregate into the mortar first. Tyrolean is a finer flicked texture from a hopper, not dry dash. Spar dash is dry dash with spar chippings. Smooth masonry paint can coat a sound wall. It does not recreate the stones. A sleeve does not glue stones, and a trowel does not mix the butter coat.
Can you paint pebble dash with smooth masonry paint?
Smooth masonry paint is a film on a sound wall. The stones stay proud. In this table the HQC tins say exterior walls and do not name pebble dash. Sandtex Olive asks whether it can be used on pebble dash, and the listing stores no answer. Its surface line says brick and concrete. Sandtex Microseal does list pebbledash, and that sheet is a different product, not the Olive tin. Brush off loose stones before you paint. The silicone masonry paint comparison is a different set of tins, not this table.
Which roller core do you need?
Both extra-long sleeves here are 230 mm. One is a 44 mm core and one is a 38 mm core. The pack is the sleeve only. Reviews of the 44 mm sleeve include frames that would not take it, and a loaded sleeve is heavy on a pole. Buy the core that matches the frame you already own. Do not copy reviews from the 44 mm listing onto the 38 mm listing. The 38 mm listing has no star line.
Why do the coverage figures differ?
Read the figure printed on the tin you open. One HQC listing says up to 6 square metres per litre. The other HQC listing says 10 square metres per litre. Those lines are not averaged. Sandtex Olive prints 12 with no unit. A Dulux Trade Weathershield smooth sheet, another brand and not a row here, prints about 4 to 6 square metres per litre on pebbledash. Do not use a smooth-wall rate on stones, and do not use one tin figure for another.
Do you need planning permission to paint pebble dash in England?
The Planning Portal treats painting as maintenance, and new pebble dash as cladding. Cladding needs permission in a conservation area, a National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or the Broads. Elsewhere the materials must be of a similar appearance. Listed buildings need consent for significant external work. An Article 4 direction can remove paint rights. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use their own orders. Re-rendering 25 per cent or more of a wall can bring building regulations. Ask building control before a strip.
When should you call a renderer?
Call a renderer when stone loss is widespread, the wall sounds hollow, damp is inside, the house is listed, or you mean to hack the dash off. Hacking often takes the brick face with it. A small sound patch can be a DIY job, and the new stones will still show. The trowel only throws stones you supply. It does not include aggregate or the butter coat. The match is the hard part. Do not promise an invisible patch.
Does a waterproof line mean the paint suits pebble dash?
A waterproof field is not proof that the film survives a dashed wall. Sandtex Olive prints waterproof and also not water resistant. Both lines are on the listing, and this comparison does not pick one of them. The page also asks whether the paint is weatherproof and stores no answer. The HQC listings say waterproof. That word is not a pebble-dash test. None of these scores is a laboratory result.
Is a harling trowel a full repair kit?
No. The 165 mm harling trowel is sold for throwing pebbles onto external walls for a rough-cast or pebble-dash finish. The listing does not include aggregate or render. It states no blade material, no weight and no review paragraph. The star line is 5.0 from one rating, which is not evidence that a patch will match. The use line says external walls. A question about interior walls has no stored answer.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Axus Captain Chunk 44 mm sleeve, and the best value is Sandtex Olive. The set mixes roller sleeves, a harling trowel and masonry paint, and these awards follow the listing order, not a laboratory test. The score is the amazon.co.uk star line: round(stars × 18), capped at 92, when a listing has at least 20 reviews; stars × 12, capped at 60, when it has fewer; 0 when there is no star line. Two listings score 83. The Axus Captain Chunk 44 mm sleeve is about £12.99, 4.6 from 324 reviews, and the review text names pebble dash and Tyrolean. Sandtex Olive is about £33.08, 4.6 from 75 reviews, and those reviews do not describe a dashed house. HQC baby pink scores 79. The trowel scores 60 from one star and no review text. HQC ivory scores 55 from three stars and no review text. The 38 mm sleeve scores 0 because the listing has no star line. Do not copy the 44 mm reviews onto it. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf prices on 21 October 2026.
