How to paint pebbledash

Updated: 23 October 2026

You want the film to reach the recesses the stones hide. How to paint pebbledash comes down to a sound, dry coat, a long pile plus a brush, and the weather window on the tin you open. If the stones move under your hand, stop. That is a repair, not a coating day. The [pebble dash comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/pebble-dash) is where the six listings sit. This page is the sequence for a wall that has already passed that check. A purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Check the stones before any paint

Press the stones before you wash. If they lift, or a knock sounds hollow across more than a small patch, paint will not glue the coat. Leave the tin closed and use pebble dash falling off. On a pre-1960 house, do not dry-sand old paint. Which tin to buy stays on the buying guide and on best masonry paint for pebbledash.

Clean, treat growth, then stabilise only if the face is powdery

Wash the dash and let it dry before any coating. Toolstation’s guide puts that drying first, because a film over damp masonry fails even when the tin says waterproof. Use a stiff brush on growth, not a wire brush that rips stones out. Stabilise only when the face is powdery. Bostik’s own sheet says not below 5°C and not on a damp wall. Microseal’s 8°C line is not printed on the HQC pages.

Brush the edges, then roll the field

Cut in with a masonry brush, then roll. The £12.99 Axus sleeve is a 230 mm extra-long pile with a 44 mm core, and its reviews mention dash, Tyrolean and sharp K-Rend. Work in more than one direction, then back-brush the recesses. The £12.54 sleeve is the same pile in a 38 mm core, with no review text. Do not copy the 44 mm comments across. Neither pack includes a frame. The listing says oil-based and acrylic paints. A later description says water-based masonry paints only.

Leave it long enough for the tin you bought

Baby pink says dry in 3 hours and full cure in 24 hours, with coverage up to 6 m² per litre. Ivory says dry in 2 hours and leaves full cure blank, at 10 square metres per litre. Olive says dry in 4 hours and full cure in 7 days, with coverage shown as 12 and no unit. Recoat on the clock on your tin.

Common questions

Do I wash the wall first?
Yes, if it is dirty, dusty or green, and then you wait until it is dry. Painting over wash water is a common reason a film lifts, including on a tin whose listing says waterproof. Toolstation’s guide puts that drying step before filler, stabiliser or paint. A light shower on the day you planned to roll is a reason to stop, not a reason to work faster.
When do I use a stabiliser?
Use a stabiliser when the dash is powdery or chalky and the stones themselves are still bonded. Skip it on a hard, sound face. Bostik’s sheet for its own solution says not below 5°C and not on a damp wall, with paint following within about 12 hours. Sandtex Microseal also specifies a stabiliser for powdery faces. Neither sheet is the label of the HQC tins or of Sandtex Olive. Read the stabiliser you bought, and do not put it on hollow dash.
Should I use a roller, a brush, or both?
Use both. Cut in with a masonry brush, roll the field with a long pile, then back-brush the recesses. The 44 mm Axus sleeve is the one reviewers used on dash, and they still describe weight and missed texture. The 38 mm sleeve has no reviews on the listing. A brush alone is slow in the field. A roller alone leaves the shadow lines behind the stones.
Which Axus core do I put on the frame?
Match the core you already own. The £12.99 sleeve is 44 mm. The £12.54 sleeve is 38 mm. A review of the 44 mm sleeve includes a core that would not fit the buyer’s handle, and one that kept falling off. If you have no frame, the sleeve listing does not supply one. The 44 mm review text does not transfer to the 38 mm listing.
How long do I leave the first coat?
Use the tin you opened. Baby pink says 3 hours to dry and 24 hours to full cure. Ivory says 2 hours to dry and does not state full cure. Olive says 4 hours to dry and 7 days to full cure. Do not pick the shortest figure and apply it to the other two. Dash holds paint in the texture, so a coat that feels dry at the tips can still be soft at the back of the stones.
Can I paint if rain is due?
Not if the wall is still wet or rain will hit the film while it is drying. Microseal’s sheet refuses rain and frost and sets 8°C for that product. The HQC listings do not print that 8°C line. Olive prints a 4-hour dry time and a 7-day cure, not a rain rule. If the forecast is wet, wait. A waterproof claim on the listing is not a licence to coat a damp wall.
What if stones come off on the brush?
Stop. Stones on the brush or in the roller pile mean the coat is loose. The 44 mm sleeve reviews describe that, and they also describe torn bristles on sharp render. Pressing the stones back and painting over them is not a repair. Clear only what is already detached, then decide whether the patch is local or the elevation has failed. Paint the sound areas on another day.
