Masonry paint for pebble dash

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a dashed wall, and the amazon.co.uk basket mixes a roller, a trowel and three tins. Masonry paint for pebble dash is the right spend only when the coat is still sound and you are changing the colour. If stones are already on the ground, paint is the wrong first product. The [pebble dash comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/pebble-dash) lists the six listings, from the £11.99 trowel to the £44.90 ivory tin. Name the job, then match the roller core to the frame you own. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf prices from 21 October 2026. Three jobs, not one product

The tools sit between £11.99 and £12.99, and none of those prices is a tin of paint. The £12.99 Axus sleeve is the only listing whose reviews describe pebble dash. The £12.54 sleeve has no star line, so those reviews do not transfer. The BARGAINWORLDUK trowel is a 165 mm blade. Weight, steel grade and stones are not in the pack.

Match the core before the pile

Neither Axus pack includes a frame. The £12.99 sleeve is a 44 mm core, part AXU/RO9XXL, 180 g. The £12.54 sleeve is a 38 mm core, part AXI/RO938XXL, 183 g. Buyers of the 44 mm sleeve say the foam centre pushes paint into the stones, that a loaded sleeve is heavy, and that the core missed at least one frame. The listing says oil-based and acrylic paints. A later amazon.co.uk description says water-based masonry paints only. Read the page on the day you order. Toolstation’s guide still uses a masonry brush as well as a long-pile roller. The sequence for a sound wall is on how to paint pebbledash.

What the three tins do and do not say

None of the three paint listings states pebble dash as a use. Ivory is 4.6 from three reviews and has no review text, so baby-pink colour stories are not evidence about it. Do not average those coverage lines. Sandtex Olive asks whether it can be used on pebble dash and stores no answer. Coverage is 12 with no unit, and the listing prints both waterproof and not water resistant. A Microseal sheet names pebbledash. That sheet is not this Olive listing. The pick is on best masonry paint for pebbledash.

When the basket is the wrong buy

If stones come away in your hand, or a patch sounds hollow, a tin will not stick the coat back. Read pebble dash falling off before you buy paint or a sleeve. Painting sound existing dash in England is normally maintenance. A new pebble-dash coat is cladding. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use their own rules, and a listed building or an Article 4 direction can take an English colour change out of the usual case. The trowel title uses both rough cast and pebble dash.

Common questions

Do I buy paint, a roller or a trowel?
Buy paint when the dash is sound and you want a new colour. Buy a sleeve only after that, and only if you already have a frame of the matching core. Buy the £11.99 harling trowel when you are throwing stones onto a wet coat and you already have aggregate. The trowel does not include stones, and the sleeve does not include paint. If the wall is hollow or shedding, none of the three is the first purchase.
Will either Axus core fit the frame I own?
No. The cores are different sizes. The £12.99 sleeve is a 44 mm core. The £12.54 sleeve is a 38 mm core. Reviews on the 44 mm sleeve include a core that would not fit the buyer’s existing handle. Measure the frame before you choose. Neither listing includes the frame, so a sleeve on its own still leaves you without a handle.
Which tin actually mentions pebble dash?
None of them states it as a use. The two HQC pages say exterior walls and do not name pebble dash. The Sandtex Olive page asks whether the paint can be used on pebble dash and does not store an answer. A different Sandtex product, Microseal, does name pebbledash on its sheet. That line must not be copied onto the Olive listing.
Is the 1 litre HQC tin cheap because it is small?
The sticker is £24.90, which is less than the £44.90 ivory tin and close to the £33.08 Olive tin. Per litre it is the dearest of the three, at about £24.90, against about £17.96 for ivory and about £6.62 for Olive. The small tin can still make sense as a colour trial on a patch you can see in daylight. It is not the low price per litre.
Can I paint if stones are loose?
No. Loose stones and a hollow sound mean the coat is failing. Paint sits on the surface. It does not bond stones back into the wall. Reviewers of the 44 mm sleeve also found loose stones stuck in the pile and bristles torn on sharp render. Fix or replace the failed area first, then paint only what is still firmly bonded.
Does painting a house in England need planning permission?
Painting an existing finish is normally maintenance under the Planning Portal’s note on external walls in England. Applying new pebble dash is cladding, which is a different question. Listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 directions can change the usual position. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not covered by that English note, so check the rule where the house stands before you order a strong colour.
