Pebble dash falling off

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have swept stones off the path, or a patch sounds hollow when you tap it. Pebble dash falling off is either a local hole or a coat that has left the elevation, and those are different risks. A small matched patch can be a careful DIY job if the rest of the wall is solid. Hacking a whole face off, or painting over a hollow coat, damages brick and traps moisture. The [pebble dash comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/pebble-dash) includes one throwing trowel and no aggregate. This page is the stop line, not a mix recipe. Tap the wall before you buy anything

Start with your knuckles, not a basket. A firm ring and stones that stay put mean a missing cluster may be local. A hollow drum, or stones that lift in sheets, means the bond has failed more widely. Pressing stones back into old mortar does not restore that bond. The masonry tins here are films, not adhesives. The coating sequence on how to paint pebbledash applies after the wall is solid.

What a small patch has to match

A patch shows, because stone size, colour and how proud the stones sit are what you see from the pavement. Checkatrade’s repair note says to remove what is loose, use a bonding coat, put on a scratch coat, then throw matching stones while the top coat is wet. It also says blending is hard enough that many people should use a plasterer. Grinding mortar out is a silica job. A hobby mask is not the control for a long grind.

When to stop hacking

Taking the dash off an elevation is not a weekend with a bolster. Hacking can tear the brick face. Book a renderer if the hollow sound runs past one patch, the base is damp, or the house is listed. Do not guess a cement coat onto a lime wall. Pebbledash versus roughcast names the finish.

Paint is not a glue

None of the three masonry tins fixes a failed coat. HQC baby pink and ivory do not name pebble dash. Sandtex Olive asks the question and stores no answer. If you only need a colour on sound dash, use the buying guide. The £11.99 trowel is the throwing tool only. In England, ask building control if about a quarter of a wall is re-rendered. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use their own rules.

Common questions

Why are the stones falling off?
The usual pattern is a coat that has lost its bond, often after years of water at cracks, sills or the base of the wall. A hollow sound means the dash has left the backing even where stones still look attached. A few stones at a knock point can be impact. Sheets of stones, or a drumming noise across a gable, are a failed coat. Paint did not cause that by itself, and paint will not reverse it.
Can I press the loose stones back?
No. Once the stone has left the butter coat, pressing it into dust or into a dry hole does not rebuild the bond. It falls out again. Lift what is already loose so the edge of the patch is sound, then decide whether the hole is small enough to match. If the surrounding coat sounds hollow, the hole is not the whole problem.
What does the harling trowel actually do?
It throws stones. The £11.99 listing describes a 165 mm trowel for rough cast or pebble dash on external walls, with a hardwood handle. It does not include the pebbles, the render or a bonding coat. One star and no review text do not tell you how the blade throws. You still have to match the aggregate to the wall you are patching.
Will a patch disappear?
Do not expect it to. Fresh stones and fresh mortar read differently from a weathered face, even when the size is close. Trade guides say blending is the hard part and often prefer a plasterer for that reason. A later coat of masonry paint can reduce the contrast on a sound wall. It cannot make a badly matched aggregate look original, and it cannot hide a hollow coat.
When is painting the wrong next step?
Paint is the wrong next step when stones are loose, when the wall sounds hollow, or when the base is damp. The tins here do not claim to glue dash back on. Painting is reasonable only after the failed material is gone and the remaining coat is bonded, and then only with the dry time on the tin you open. A colour change is also the wrong next step if you have not checked planning on a listed house.
Is hacking the dash off a DIY job?
Stripping an elevation is a poor DIY default. The dash can take the face of the brick and the joints with it, and what you uncover is rarely ready to paint. A small area that is already loose is a different scale from a whole gable. If you would be on a ladder for days with a bolster, get a renderer to look before you start. Grinding the joints adds a silica risk that a casual mask does not cover.
Do I need permission to re-render?
In England, a like-for-like repair of appearance is the Planning Portal’s ordinary case, and a new colour or texture can need an application. Listed buildings need consent. Where about a quarter or more of a wall is re-rendered, ask building control as well. Other UK nations use their own rules. Painting sound existing dash is normally maintenance in England, and it is not the same project as a new pebble-dash coat.
