Pebbledash vs roughcast

Updated: 23 October 2026

The label may say roughcast, harling, Tyrolean or pebble dash as if they were one coat. Pebbledash vs roughcast is a difference you can see from the pavement, and it changes what you throw. If you can see the stone colour, you are looking at dry dash. If the stones are coated in mortar and the wall looks softer, you are looking at roughcast or harling. Dry dash and roughcast

Dry dash, the finish most people in England call pebble dash, is aggregate thrown onto a wet butter coat. The stones stay on the face, so their colour is the colour of the wall. The butter coat is not a tin of masonry paint. Roughcast, also called wet dash, is gravel mixed into the render and thrown as a premixed coat, so the stones are coated and the wall looks softer. Weber’s UK note puts the split that way. The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings describes the same split. Edwardian writers sometimes used the two words for one coat, and Building Conservation records that overlap. If you can see the stone colour, shop for a dry-dash repair.

Harling and Tyrolean

Harling is the thrown wet mix in Scottish practice. Lime Green’s glossary treats it as that cast, not as dry pebbles flicked onto a butter coat. A coated stone is harling or roughcast. A clean stone face is dry dash. Tyrolean is a machine-built honeycomb, not a bag of pebbles, and Weber describes it that way. It is not repaired by throwing garden gravel at a hole. Reviews on the 44 mm Axus sleeve mention Tyrolean, wet dash and K-Rend because people coat those textures with the same long pile. Those lines belong to that sleeve only. The £11.99 trowel says rough cast or pebble dash in one phrase. The mix decides the finish.

What the trowel and the roller are for

Use the trowel when you are casting and you already know whether the stones go into the mix or onto a wet coat. Use a roller when the finish is already on the wall. The £12.99 sleeve is the 44 mm pile whose reviews mention those textures. The 38 mm sleeve at £12.54 has no reviews. Do not move the Tyrolean comments across. Smooth masonry paint does not convert roughcast into pebble dash. That stop line is on pebble dash falling off. The buying order is on the buying guide. Coating a sound face is on how to paint pebbledash.

Old walls

A cement dry dash is a poor default on an old solid wall built to work with lime. South Gloucestershire’s note says traditional roughcast is not modern cement pebble dash.

Common questions

What is the difference in one sentence?
Pebble dash is dry aggregate thrown onto a wet butter coat, so you see the stone colour. Roughcast is a wet mix with the stones already in it, so the wall looks softer and the stones are coated. If you can see the chippings as distinct colours, shop for dry dash. If you cannot, shop for a wet cast or ask before you buy a bag of pebbles.
Is harling pebble dash?
In Scottish practice, harling is the thrown wet mix, which sits with roughcast rather than with dry dash. The street view can look similar. The test is whether the stones are coated in mortar or sitting clean on the face. Buying dry pebbles for a harled wall gives you a different finish from the one that failed.
Is Tyrolean pebble dash?
No. Tyrolean is a flicked, honeycomb texture, often built with a hopper or a machine. It is not a bag of pebbles on a butter coat, and it is not repaired by throwing spar. People paint it with a long-pile sleeve, which is why the finish appears in roller reviews. That mention is not a test of a Tyrolean system.
What is a butter coat?
The butter coat is the wet render layer that receives dry aggregate in pebble dash. The stones are thrown onto it while it is open. It is not the premixed gravel coat used for roughcast, and it is not a coat of masonry paint. A patch fails when the new butter coat does not hold stones of a similar size and colour to the old face.
Can one trowel do both?
The £11.99 harling trowel is sold for rough cast or pebble dash, so the listing treats both as a throwing job. The blade does not choose the finish. Stones in the mix give roughcast or harling. Stones onto a wet coat give pebble dash. The pack includes no aggregate. You still have to know which wall you are matching.
Why do roller reviews mention K-Rend and Tyrolean?
The 44 mm Axus reviews describe people coating rough textures, including pebble dash, Tyrolean, wet dash and sharp K-Rend. K-Rend is a brand name in those reviews, not a finish we tested. The 38 mm sleeve has no review text, so those names do not apply to it. A long pile helps on a rough face. It does not convert one render system into another.
Should an old solid wall get cement dry dash?
Not as a default. Traditional roughcast and lime renders are not the same build as a modern cement pebble dash, and a hard coat can hold moisture in a solid wall. If the house is old, listed, or already damp behind the dash, ask a specialist before you buy cement and chippings. A local patch on a sound modern dash is a different case from recoating a lime cottage.
