MT2 drill chuck comparison 2026

The best MT2 drill chucks, compared.

Top pick: WEN LA164K 5/8 inch Best value: Ejoyous 1–13 mm MT2 – Next strong score under £24 with at least 20 reviews: a lighter 1–13 mm body at about £22.59, 4.4 from 34, if you check the unsettled key and the unnamed taper. Updated October 2026.

An MT2 drill chuck is a three-jaw drill chuck with a Morse taper 2 shank. In the UK you buy one for a lathe tailstock or a bench-drill spindle. MT2 is the shank that enters the machine. It is not the taper on the back of the chuck. That second taper decides whether the parts assemble. B16, B18, JT3 and JT6 are not interchangeable, so a listing that only says MT2 has not named the chuck mount. A 1–13 mm chuck is the usual size for a mini lathe or a small pillar drill. A 1–16 mm or 5/8 inch body is heavier and uses more quill travel. A keyed chuck suits reverse and tapping. A self-tightening keyless chuck suits forward drilling, and the sleeve can lock after a heavy cut. Confirm Morse taper 2 before you order. An MT3 spindle needs a sleeve. Seat the taper clean and dry, park the key before the spindle starts, and do not wear gloves at a rotating chuck. Those checks are in the [MT2 drill chuck buying guide](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/mt2-drill-chuck/sub/mt2-drill-chuck-buying-guide).

The best MT2 drill chucks in detail

WEN LA164K 5/8 inch

Rank 1

WEN LA164K 5/8 inch

∼£28

Our view

The WEN LA164K, listed at £28.10, is a keyed 5/8 inch chuck with an MT2 arbor, a key, and chromium-vanadium steel, at about 1.11 kg. Five eighths of an inch is 15.875 mm. The listing line is 4.7 from 1,378 reviews. The reviews copied for this comparison are from the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico and Brazil, not the United Kingdom, so that count is not British evidence and this row does not carry the top-pick badge. US reviewers seat it in mini-lathe tailstocks and hold from a centre drill up to 5/8 inch, sometimes after cleaning grit from the sleeve. An Australian review calls the gears gritty and says the MT2 angle will not lock. A US review found it large on an 8x14 mini lathe. The chuck-side taper is not named, and the bullets say to install it with a rubber mallet.

Pros

  • Keyed 5/8 inch capacity with an MT2 arbor and a key
  • Named model LA164K in chromium-vanadium steel
  • US reviews of tailstock drilling up to 5/8 inch
  • Bullets name a rubber mallet for seating

Cons

  • The 1,378 reviews copied here are not from the United Kingdom
  • Chuck taper is not named
  • An Australian review says the MT2 angle will not lock
  • Reported as large on an 8x14 mini lathe, at about £28.10

Best for: You want a keyed chuck that states 5/8 inch and you do not need British buyer evidence.

Less suitable: You want UK reviews, a named B16 or JT3 mount, or the lightest mini-lathe body.

Common questions

Are the 1,378 WEN reviews from the UK?

The reviews copied for this comparison are from the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico and Brazil, not the United Kingdom. The 4.7 from 1,378 is the listing line, not a British sample.

What does the WEN LA164K hold?

The title says 5/8 inch, which is 15.875 mm. The bullets also name pen mandrels and work up to that size. The chuck-side taper is not named.

Cocoarm 1–16 mm keyless

Rank 2

Cocoarm 1–16 mm keyless

∼£26

Our view

The Cocoarm keyless chuck, listed at £26.00, is a 1–16 mm body on an MT2-JT3 arbor and weighs 1.21 kg. Across 53 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.7. UK reviewers say it holds a 1 mm bit with the jaws meeting, runs true as a replacement for a wobbly Clarke drill-press chuck, and fits a lathe tailstock, including a Myford ML7. Several of those reviews call the machining better than they expected at this price. One UK review could not release the drill by hand and used a large wrench, so the self-tightening sleeve does not always undo itself. The bullets describe hand tightening and an MT2-JT3 arbor, while the included-components line also names a chuck key, so a key is not confirmed. It is the top pick in this set for forward drilling when you can check that the chuck mount is JT3.

Pros

  • 1–16 mm on a stated MT2-JT3 arbor at about £26.00
  • UK reviews of a 1 mm bit and a true-running Clarke replacement
  • Reported fit in a lathe tailstock and a Myford ML7
  • 4.7 from 53 amazon.co.uk reviews

Cons

  • One UK review needed a large wrench to release a drill
  • Included-components line also names a chuck key
  • One UK review ground the arbor for a through-tailstock
  • 1.21 kg is a large body on a short quill

Best for: You drill forwards on a lathe tailstock or pillar drill and can check that the chuck mount is JT3.

Less suitable: You reverse or tap, you need a confirmed chuck key, or you want a short 13 mm body.

Chuck and arbor

Common questions

Is a chuck key included with the Cocoarm 1–16 mm keyless chuck?

The bullets describe hand tightening and an MT2-JT3 arbor. The included-components line also names a chuck key, so a key is not confirmed.

What capacity does the Cocoarm listing state?

The title and the bullets state 1–16 mm. The listed weight is 1.21 kg, so this is a heavier body than a 13 mm chuck.

Does the Cocoarm listing say it releases by hand?

The bullets say hand tightening. One UK review needed a large wrench to release a drill, so the sleeve does not always undo itself.

Cocoarm 1–16 mm keyless, £24.36

Rank 3

Cocoarm 1–16 mm keyless, £24.36

∼£24

Our view

This Cocoarm, listed at £24.36, is a separate keyless 1–16 mm listing from the £26.00 Cocoarm, also titled MT2-JT3 and also about 1.21 kg. The star line is 4.7 from 42 reviews, and those reviews do not belong to the other listing. UK reviewers call it solid and say it grips a 1 mm drill and a 15 mm drill, and one prefers the hand sleeve to an old keyed chuck. A first delivery arrived without the taper, and the replacement included it. One UK buyer clocked it in a headstock with a dial indicator and described it as visually off centre, and another found it heavy for a small or light lathe. It does not fit a hand drill. An attribute says G 3/4 BSP, which the title does not support, so that thread is not the mount.

Pros

  • Keyless 1–16 mm with MT2-JT3 in the title
  • UK reviews of a grip from 1 mm to 15 mm
  • 4.7 from 42 reviews at about £24.36
  • Easier than a keyed chuck in one UK review

Cons

  • A separate listing from the other Cocoarm, so the reviews do not combine
  • One UK unit arrived without the taper
  • One UK clocking check described it as off centre
  • Heavy for a small lathe, and it does not fit a hand drill

Best for: You want this second Cocoarm keyless 16 mm listing and will check that the taper is in the box.

Less suitable: You wanted a pistol drill, a light mini-lathe body, or the other Cocoarm listing.

Common questions

Is this the same product as the other Cocoarm keyless chuck?

No. This listing is the £24.36 chuck with 4.7 from 42 reviews. The other Cocoarm is £26.00 with 4.7 from 53. The reviews do not combine.

Does this Cocoarm listing fit a hand drill?

A UK review says it does not. The title describes an MT2 arbor. An attribute says G 3/4 BSP, which the title does not support.

Wakects 1–16 mm keyless

Rank 4

Wakects 1–16 mm keyless

∼£24

Our view

The Wakects keyless chuck is a 1–16 mm body of about 1.17 kg with MT2-JT3 in the title, and the listing used for this score is £23.83. The star line is 4.6 from 68 reviews, the largest sample among the keyless 16 mm rows. UK reviewers say it runs true, holds a drill, fits a lathe tailstock and a bench drill, and keeps swarf out of a key hole when woodturning. One UK review measured more than a millimetre of runout, and another found the body large for a mini lathe. An attribute says M3-B18, which fights the MT2-JT3 title, and the capacity attribute says 16 millilitres rather than a length. The bullets state a precision of 0.002 with no unit, so that figure is not a test of the chuck in your hand. A check on 22 October 2026 showed the listing at £26.59.

Pros

  • Keyless 1–16 mm with MT2-JT3 in the title
  • 4.6 from 68 reviews, including tailstock and bench-drill use
  • UK reviews of a smooth action with no chuck key
  • Useful for woodturning where swarf would fill a key hole

Cons

  • One UK review measured more than 1 mm of runout
  • Attribute M3-B18 conflicts with the MT2-JT3 title
  • Capacity attribute says 16 millilitres
  • The 0.002 precision line has no unit and is not a test

Best for: You want a keyless 16 mm chuck with a larger UK review sample and will ignore the conflicting attribute.

Less suitable: You need one unambiguous mount, or a body that stays small on a mini lathe.

Common questions

What mount does the Wakects title state?

MT2-JT3. A separate attribute says M3-B18, which conflicts with the title. Treat the mount as unconfirmed until the arbor enters the chuck.

What capacity should you use for the Wakects chuck?

The title says 1–16 mm. The capacity attribute says 16 millilitres, which is not a length. Use the title range, and ignore the millilitre line.

Flylin 1–13 mm keyed

Rank 5

Flylin 1–13 mm keyed

∼£17

Our view

The Flylin keyed chuck, listed at £16.99, is a 1–13 mm MT2-B16 set at about 920 g, with a chuck key and a taper arbor named in the bullets. The star line is 4.6 from 9 reviews. The UK reviews say it matches the description, was bought for a lathe, and feels sturdy and easy to use. No fault is named in those four UK reviews, and none says the arbor would not enter the chuck. Nine reviews is a small sample, so that silence is not a long record. The item-diameter attribute says 1 mm, which cannot be the chuck body. It is the cheapest stated MT2-B16 keyed option here if 13 mm is enough and you accept a thin review pool.

Pros

  • Keyed 1–13 mm with MT2-B16 stated in the title
  • Chuck key and arbor named in the bullets
  • About £16.99, the lowest price in this set
  • UK reviews say it matches the description for a lathe

Cons

  • 4.6 from only 9 reviews
  • No named fault, which is a small sample rather than a long test
  • Item-diameter attribute says 1 mm
  • 13 mm, so it does not state a 16 mm range

Best for: You want a cheap keyed 13 mm chuck with MT2 and B16 both written on the listing.

Less suitable: You need 16 mm capacity, or a review sample larger than nine.

Common questions

Does the Flylin chuck come with a key?

Yes. The bullets say a chuck key is supplied, with the chuck and an MT2-B16 arbor.

Will the Flylin chuck fit a cordless drill?

No. The mount described is MT2-B16, which seats in a tailstock or a drill-press spindle, not a hand-drill thread.

ZffXH 1–13 mm keyed

Rank 6

ZffXH 1–13 mm keyed

∼£26

Our view

The ZffXH keyed chuck, listed at £25.99, is a 1–13 mm body of about 900 g with B16 in the title and a K32 key. The star line is 4.4 from 81 reviews, the largest keyed sample in this set. A UK review calls it heavily built, with almost no runout on a pillar drill, and usable in a lathe tailstock when the parts match. Other reviews, including a UK one, say the MT2 arbor was not in the box or would not enter the chuck, and the mismatch is named as B16 against B18. The bullets mention a 1/4 inch by 20 tpi draw bolt that is not included. The listing itself says not to strike it with a flat iron and a hammer. When the arbor matches, reviewers call the quality fair for the price. When it does not, the chuck and the shank are two separate parts.

Pros

  • Keyed 1–13 mm with B16 and a K32 key in the listing
  • 4.4 from 81 reviews
  • UK review of almost no runout on a pillar drill when it matches
  • Stated spindle-hole figure of 17.78 mm for MT2

Cons

  • UK review: the MT2 arbor was not in the box
  • Reviews name a B16 chuck with a B18 arbor, or the reverse
  • Draw bolt is mentioned and not included
  • A non-UK review found only the key in the packet

Best for: You want a keyed 13 mm chuck with a large review count and will check the arbor against the chuck before you seat it.

Less suitable: You need the arbor present and the right size on the first delivery.

Common questions

Is the arbor included with the ZffXH chuck?

Does the ZffXH arbor match B16?

The title says B16. Reviews report a B18 arbor or a nose that will not enter. Check the pair before you seat it.

Ejoyous 1–13 mm MT2

Rank 7

Ejoyous 1–13 mm MT2

∼£23

Our view

The Ejoyous chuck, listed at £22.59, is a 1–13 mm MT2 body at about 872 g, and the star line is 4.4 from 34 reviews. UK reviewers describe it as well made for a men's-shed lathe and for end-grain wood, and one buyer ordered a second, then an MT1 adaptor for another lathe. The title and the wrench-chuck bullet say keyed, while the handle-type attribute says hand-tightened, so the closing method is not settled. The chuck-side taper number is not stated. Non-UK reviews say the overall length is longer than the drawing, and one German review gives about 17 cm against an illustrated 11 cm. No UK review says the arbor would not enter the chuck. It is the best value here if you want the lighter 13 mm size and you will check the mount and the key before you rely on either.

Pros

  • 1–13 mm at about 872 g and about £22.59
  • UK reviews for a shed lathe and end-grain wood
  • One UK buyer ordered a second
  • No UK review of an arbor that would not enter

Cons

  • Title says keyed and one attribute says hand-tightened
  • Chuck taper is not named
  • Non-UK reviews say it is longer than the drawing
  • Tapping is claimed in the bullets and not tested in a UK review

Best for: You want a lighter 1–13 mm chuck around £23 and will confirm the key and the unnamed taper yourself.

Less suitable: You need the chuck mount named before you pay, or a settled keyed or keyless description.

Common questions

Is the Ejoyous chuck keyed or keyless?

The title and the wrench-chuck bullet say keyed. The handle-type attribute says hand-tightened. Both are on the listing, so the closing method is not settled.

What shank does the Ejoyous listing state?

MT2. The chuck-side taper number is not stated, so you still have to check that the arbor enters the chuck.

Bohaner 1–16 mm keyless

Rank 8

Bohaner 1–16 mm keyless

∼£26

Our view

The Bohaner keyless chuck, listed at £26.00, is sold as a 1–16 mm MT2-B16 and is the heaviest body in the set at 1.33 kg. The star line is 4.3 from 46 reviews. UK reviewers call it sturdy, one drilled 1 inch holes in pine on a drill press, and one recorded about 0.0015 inch on a Draper pillar drill and preferred it to the original keyed chuck. Another UK buyer returned it because a known B16 arbor would not fit, so the B16 claim did not hold on that unit. One review says it is a little hard to tighten fully, and another calls it large on a mini lathe with a 16 inch bed. The title says self-tighten, and the bullets say tightening is by hand.

Pros

  • Keyless 1–16 mm sold as MT2-B16
  • UK review of 1 inch holes in pine on a drill press
  • A Draper pillar-drill reading of about 0.0015 inch in one UK review
  • 4.3 from 46 reviews

Cons

  • One UK buyer returned it because a known B16 arbor would not fit
  • Heaviest body in the set at 1.33 kg
  • Large on a mini lathe with a 16 inch bed
  • Hand tightening can be difficult

Best for: You want a heavy keyless 16 mm chuck for a pillar drill and will test the B16 bore before you rely on it.

Less suitable: You already own a B16 arbor you expect to swap on, or you have a short mini-lathe quill.

Common questions

Is the Bohaner chuck B16?

The title says MT2-B16. One UK review says a known B16 arbor would not fit, and that buyer returned it. Test the bore before you rely on the claim.

Is a key required for the Bohaner chuck?

The bullets say tightening is by hand. One review says it is a little hard to tighten fully. A key is not listed.

Ausla keyless MT2

Rank 9

Ausla keyless MT2

∼£21

Our view

The Ausla keyless chuck, listed at £20.99, weighs about 920 g and is sold as self-tightening with an MT2 arbor. The bullets say 1–13 mm and also 1/2 inch, while the title also says 0.04–0.5 in, and half an inch is 12.7 mm, so the ranges are not the same phrase. The star line is 4.3 from 40 reviews. UK reviewers call it acceptable for static use on a wood lathe, and one reports little runout in a tailstock and prefers it to that buyer's keyed chuck. One UK review says the arbor fits the lathe and the chuck does not fit the arbor, and that the chuck wants to turn while drilling. The chuck-side taper is not named. A non-UK review found a rusty shaft and play in the head.

Pros

  • Keyless MT2 set at about £20.99 and about 920 g
  • UK review of little runout in a tailstock
  • Acceptable for static wood-lathe use in a UK review
  • Chuck and arbor named in the package line

Cons

  • Capacity mixes 1–13 mm with 0.04–0.5 in
  • Chuck taper is not named
  • One UK review: the arbor fits the lathe and the chuck does not fit the arbor
  • A non-UK review reports a rusty shaft and play in the head

Best for: You want a lighter keyless chuck near £21 for static tailstock work and will check that the chuck accepts the arbor.

Less suitable: You need a named chuck taper, or a pair that is already known to mate.

Do the Ausla chuck and arbor mate?

One UK review says the arbor fits the lathe and the chuck does not fit the arbor. The chuck-side taper is not named on the listing.

YDHfdc 1–16 mm keyed

Rank 10

YDHfdc 1–16 mm keyed

∼£22

Our view

The YDHfdc keyed chuck, listed at £21.99, claims a 1–16 mm MT2-B16 body at about 920 g, and the bullets include a chuck key. The star line is 4.1 from 21 reviews. Some UK reviews say it fitted a Ferm drill on B16 and feels solid. Repeated UK reviews say the arbor end is too large for the chuck bore and looks like a B18 arbor with a B16 chuck, and those units were returned. The title also says an SDS adapter shank, with no SDS specification in the bullets. The included-components attribute says no, which contradicts the bullets. The model string contains jt-1, which is not a statement that the arbor is JT3. The bullets claim 304 stainless steel, which remains a listing line rather than a material test.

Pros

  • Keyed 1–16 mm with a chuck key in the bullets
  • About £21.99 and about 920 g
  • One UK review fitted it to a Ferm drill on B16
  • Some UK reviews call the fit solid when the parts match

Cons

  • UK reviews of an arbor too large for the chuck bore
  • Described by buyers as a B18 arbor with a B16 chuck
  • Title also says an SDS shank that the bullets do not specify
  • Included-components attribute contradicts the bullets

Best for: You want a keyed 16 mm chuck near £22 and will return it if the arbor will not enter.

Less suitable: You need a confirmed B16 pair, or a listing that does not also claim an SDS shank.

Common questions

Will the YDHfdc arbor fit the chuck?

UK reviews say the arbor end is too big for the chuck bore, described as B18 with a B16 chuck, and those units were returned. Some other UK reviews say it fitted a Ferm drill on B16.

Is the YDHfdc chuck an SDS chuck?

The title says SDS adapter shank. The bullets specify an MT2 handle and do not give an SDS size, so the SDS line is not a fitting you can use.

Kozelo 1–13 mm keyed

Rank 11

Kozelo 1–13 mm keyed

∼£24

Our view

The Kozelo keyed set, listed at £23.99, states a 1–13 mm B16 chuck and a No. 2 Morse shank of 17.78 mm by 109 mm, at about 885 g, with a wrench in the specification bullet. The listing has no customer-review line, so there is no star rating and no UK complaint or praise to weigh. The 17.78 mm figure matches the usual MT2 large end, and it is also the B18 large end on the Arc Euro Trade chart, while B16 on that chart is 15.733 mm. The two numbers on this listing therefore do not prove the chuck bore. The included-components attribute says false, which conflicts with the specification that lists a chuck and a wrench. Hardness HRC50 is a listing claim only. You are buying a stated mount with no review sample.

Pros

  • Keyed 1–13 mm with B16 and MT2 both written in the bullets
  • Shank length stated as 109 mm and large end as 17.78 mm
  • Wrench named in the specification bullet
  • About 885 g at about £23.99

Cons

  • No customer-review line on the listing
  • 17.78 mm does not prove a B16 bore
  • Included-components attribute says false
  • HRC50 is a listing claim with no review behind it

Best for: You want a keyed 13 mm listing that states B16 and an MT2 shank, and you can accept no reviews.

Less suitable: You want a UK star line, or a shank figure that also proves the chuck taper.

Common questions

What shank diameter does the Kozelo listing state?

The bullets say 17.78 mm and a shank length of 109 mm. That figure matches the usual MT2 large end. On the Arc Euro Trade chart it is also the B18 large end, so it does not prove a B16 bore.

How is the Kozelo chuck rated on Amazon?

The listing has no customer-review line, so the star rating and the review count are not available. There is no UK praise or complaint to weigh.

How we compared

Eleven MT2 drill chuck listings on amazon.co.uk were scored on 21 October 2026 from listing lines and review notes, not from a lab test. Stars, sample size, fit and value are weighted 40, 25, 25 and 10. The top pick is the highest score among products whose notes include a review written in the United Kingdom. One row scores higher on a large listing count and is left without that badge because the extracted reviews are not from the United Kingdom. The best value is the next strong score under £24 with at least 20 reviews.

1

Stars

40%

The amazon.co.uk star rating divided by 5, then multiplied by 40 and rounded. A listing with no review line scores 0 on this part.

2

Sample

25%

Review count on the listing: 1,000 or more scores 25, 50–99 scores 10, 20–49 scores 8, under 10 scores 2, and no review line scores 0.

3

Fit

25%

A stated mount with no repeated UK reviews that the arbor will not enter scores about 18–22. A repeated mismatch scores about 10–14. A listing with no reviews scores 10.

4

Value

10%

Shelf price in GBP: under £20 scores 10, under £23 scores 8, under £25 scores 7, under £27 scores 6, and a higher price scores 4.

MT2 drill chuck buying guide

Confirm the socket, then the chuck mount, then the capacity, then keyed or keyless. Price and stars come after the pair is known to match. The notes below follow that order for a UK lathe tailstock or bench-drill spindle, using the public sources and the amazon.co.uk listings scored on 21 October 2026. None of the scores is a measured runout test.

What is an MT2 drill chuck?

An MT2 drill chuck is a three-jaw drill chuck with a Morse taper 2 shank. You buy one in the UK for a lathe tailstock or a bench-drill spindle. The shank is what enters the machine. The taper on the back of the chuck is a second size, and it decides whether the arbor and the chuck assemble. Confirm Morse taper 2 in the socket first. CGTK lists the large end at 17.780 mm, the small end at 14.529 mm and the length at 65.087 mm. MK2 is the same size. ISO 296:1991 is the Morse taper standard.

Best for

  • An MT2 lathe tailstock, including a mini lathe, when you can name the chuck taper
  • A pillar drill with an MT2 spindle and a worn chuck to replace
  • Forward drilling with frequent bit changes, if you accept that a keyless sleeve can lock

Not ideal for

  • A cordless drill, or any hand-drill thread
  • Reverse or tapping with a self-tightening keyless chuck
  • A socket you cannot identify, or a hole that must be bored rather than drilled

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Buying on the word MT2 alone

MT2 is the shank that enters the machine. B16, B18, JT3 and JT6 are the chuck mounts, and they are not interchangeable. A B18 arbor will not enter a B16 chuck. That mismatch is the repeated complaint on these listings. A 17.78 mm shank figure matches MT2 and also the B18 large end, so it does not prove a B16 bore.

  2. 2

Treating it as a cordless-drill chuck

A Morse taper 2 shank seats in a tailstock or a drill-press spindle. It is not a hand-drill thread. A title that says electric hand tools, or an SDS line with no SDS size, does not change the shank. One UK review in this set says a listing did not fit a hand drill.

  3. 3

Grinding a mismatch, or trusting a unitless figure

Grinding a mismatched arbor is not the normal fix. Tapping in reverse with a self-tightening keyless chuck can lock the sleeve. A printed 0.002 or 0.005 with no unit is not a test of the chuck in your hand. A large star line that is not from United Kingdom buyers is not British evidence.

What to weigh up

Socket and chuck mount

High

Confirm Morse taper 2 before you look at capacity or price. CGTK lists the large end at 17.780 mm, the small end at 14.529 mm and the length at 65.087 mm. MK2 is the same size. An MT3 spindle needs a sleeve. ISO 296:1991 is the standard for that shank. The chuck mount is the next check, and it is the one these listings get wrong. On the Arc Euro Trade table, B16 is 15.733 mm at the large end, B18 is 17.78 mm, JT6 is 17.17 mm and JT3 is 20.599 mm. DIN 238 is the B-taper family on that chart.

Capacity and closing method

High

A 1–13 mm chuck is the half-inch class for a mini lathe or a small pillar drill. A 1–16 mm body, or a 5/8 inch body, is heavier and uses more quill travel. A long chuck on a short tailstock leaves less stroke for the drill. Ignore a capacity attribute written in millilitres, and ignore two ranges on one listing that are not the same opening. Keyed suits reverse and tapping, if the key is actually in the box. Keyless suits forward drilling and frequent bit changes.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Forward drilling on an MT2 tailstock

You drill forwards on a lathe tailstock or a pillar drill and you can check that the chuck mount is JT3. The Cocoarm 1–16 mm keyless chuck is about £26.00, with 4.7 from 53 reviews. UK reviews cite a 1 mm bit, a Clarke drill-press replacement and a Myford ML7. One review needed a wrench to release the drill, and the body is 1.21 kg.

A lighter 13 mm chuck for a shed lathe

You want the half-inch class and a lighter body, and you will check the key and the unnamed taper yourself. The Ejoyous 1–13 mm chuck is about £22.59 and about 872 g, with 4.4 from 34 reviews. The title says keyed and one attribute says hand-tightened. No UK review says the arbor would not enter.

A stated MT2-B16 keyed set

You want MT2 and B16 both written on the listing, with a key in the bullets, and 13 mm is enough. The Flylin keyed chuck is about £16.99 and about 920 g. The star line is 4.6 from 9 reviews, so the clean UK notes are a small sample. It does not state a 16 mm range.

Common questions about MT2 drill chucks

What is an MT2 drill chuck?
An MT2 drill chuck is a three-jaw chuck with a Morse taper 2 shank for a lathe tailstock or a bench-drill spindle. MT2, also written MK2, is the shank that enters the machine. CGTK lists the large end at 17.780 mm and the small end at 14.529 mm. ISO 296:1991 fixes Morse tapers. The chuck mount, such as B16 or JT3, is a separate taper. An MT3 spindle needs a sleeve. The shank is not a thread for a cordless drill.
How do I match the chuck to the arbor?
Match the chuck mount, not the word MT2 alone. On the Arc Euro Trade chart, B16 is 15.733 mm at the large end, B18 is 17.78 mm, JT6 is 17.17 mm and JT3 is 20.599 mm. A B18 arbor will not enter a B16 chuck. That mismatch is the repeated complaint on these amazon.co.uk listings. DIN 238 is the B-taper family on that chart. If the title and an attribute disagree, treat the mount as unconfirmed until the parts mate.
Should I buy a keyed or a keyless MT2 chuck?
Choose a keyed chuck if you reverse or tap, and confirm a key is in the box. Choose a self-tightening keyless chuck if you stay in forward rotation and change bits often. The sleeve can lock after a heavy cut, and one UK review in this set needed a large wrench to release a drill. A keyless chuck is not safer because there is no key. Take any key out before the spindle starts. Do not read a hand-tightened attribute and a wrench bullet as the same fact.
What capacity should an MT2 drill chuck have?
A 1–13 mm chuck is the half-inch class, and it is the usual size for a mini lathe or a small pillar drill. A 1–16 mm body, or a 5/8 inch body, is heavier and uses more quill travel. A long chuck on a short tailstock leaves less stroke for the drill. Pick the range the machine can swing, not the largest number on the title. A capacity line in millilitres, or two ranges that do not match, is not a length you can trust.
Will an MT2 drill chuck fit a cordless drill?
No. The shank is Morse taper 2, which seats in a tailstock or a drill-press spindle. It is not a hand-drill thread. A title that says electric hand tools, or an SDS adapter line with no SDS size, does not turn the chuck into a pistol-drill fitting. One UK review in this set says a listing did not fit a hand drill. If you are choosing the machine as well as the chuck, start with the pillar drill comparison.
How should I seat and remove an MT2 drill chuck?
Clean the socket and the shank, then seat the Morse taper dry. The Axminster bench-drill manual describes a mallet to seat the taper and a drift to remove it, and the chuck should land on timber. Isolate the machine before you adjust it. HSE leaflet INDG291 says that, and a drilling machine at work is work equipment under PUWER 1998. Do not wear gloves at a rotating chuck. Park the key before the spindle starts. The steps are in how to fit an MT2 drill chuck.
How much does an MT2 drill chuck cost?
On these eleven amazon.co.uk listings the snapshot prices run from about £16.99 to about £28.10. The lower band in the scored files is about £17–£23, and the middle band is about £24–£26. A check on 22 October 2026 showed one of those middle listings at £26.59, so these are snapshot prices. A precision figure with no unit is not a reason to pay more. Prices move, and a qualifying purchase through the links on this page can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
When should I ask a machinist?
Get a machinist if the socket is scored, if you cannot tell MT1 from MT2, if a chuck has already fallen out under cut, or if the hole must be bored or reamed rather than drilled. Grinding a mismatched arbor is not the normal fix. A figure such as 0.002 with no unit is not a test. Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 11 says goods must match the description, and GOV.UK requires a refund when goods are faulty, not as described, or not fit for purpose.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Cocoarm 1–16 mm keyless chuck at about £26.00, with 4.7 from 53 amazon.co.uk reviews. UK reviews cite a 1 mm bit, a true-running Clarke drill-press replacement and a lathe tailstock, including a Myford ML7, if you can check that the mount is JT3. The best value is the Ejoyous 1–13 mm chuck at about £22.59 if you want the lighter body and you will confirm the key and the unnamed taper. The WEN LA164K scores higher on 4.7 from 1,378, but those reviews are not from the United Kingdom, so it does not take the top-pick place. None of these scores is a lab test.
