Keyed or keyless drill chuck

Updated: 2026-10-23

You want the chuck you can close with one hand, because the key is on the floor when the bit needs changing. Keyless wins only while the spindle stays forwards and you can still undo the sleeve. Reverse to back a tap out, and an ordinary self-tightening chuck can let go. Capacity and B16 against JT3 stay on the [MT2 drill chuck buying guide](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/mt2-drill-chuck/sub/mt2-drill-chuck-buying-guide). When the key is the right choice

Buy a keyed chuck if the spindle will reverse, or if you will run a tap from the chuck and then back it out. Model Engineer owners say a keyless chuck tends to release when you reverse. The sleeve that tightened under forward feed unwinds, and the tap drops. Other owners say their Arc Euro keyless chucks hold in reverse, including power tapping. Treat that as a tendency with an exception. Do not alter the sleeve to chase it. The key drives the jaws both ways, so reverse does not decide the grip. In this set that is the reason to take Flylin, Kozelo, ZffXH, YDHfdc or the WEN LA164K when tapping is part of the job. None of these listings documents a reverse-lock ring. Albrecht and Röhm Supra chucks are outside this batch.

When a keyless chuck is the right choice

Buy a self-tightening keyless chuck if you stay in forward rotation and you change bits often. UK reviews here prefer that sleeve to a key that has to be found, and one woodturner likes it because swarf does not pack a key hole. Cocoarm B0931YTNFQ, Cocoarm B07L9N58HX, the Wakects, the Ausla and the Bohaner are sold as that kind of chuck. Feed tightens the sleeve as you drill. After a heavy cut, a hex shank, or a holesaw, the sleeve can wind tighter than your hand can undo. A UK owner on the MIG Welding forum locked a keyless chuck on a holesaw hex shank. The body had pin-spanner holes and no pin. Replies were a strap wrench, or a spanner with leather so the knurl survives. One UK review of Cocoarm B0931YTNFQ needed a large wrench to release a drill. Stop the spindle first. Do not run the machine in reverse into a block of wood.

A missing key is not a safety feature

A keyless chuck is not safer because there is no key to leave in. The hazard is the key you forgot. Take it out before the spindle starts. At work, PUWER regulation 11, in HSE's priced book L22, requires dangerous parts to be guarded where that is practicable. A trade-press report of the 2014 Rotork case is the illustration: a chuck key left in an unguarded lathe was ejected, a worker's eye socket was fractured, and the company was fined £15,000. That is one prosecution, not a rate for these listings. None of them says the supplied key is self-ejecting. At home, unplug before you change a bit, and do not wear gloves at a rotating chuck. How you seat the taper is on the how to fit an MT2 drill chuck page.

Which listings in this set are keyed, and which are not

Keyed, as the listings state it: Flylin, with a key and MT2-B16 in the title. Kozelo, with a wrench in the specification and no review line. ZffXH, with a K32 key, and reviews that dispute the arbor. YDHfdc, with a key in the bullets, and reviews of an arbor too big for the chuck. WEN LA164K, with a key, and a review sample that is not from the United Kingdom. A key in the box does not repair a B18 nose in a B16 bore. Keyless, and sold as self-tightening: Ausla, Wakects, Cocoarm B07L9N58HX, Cocoarm B0931YTNFQ, and Bohaner. On B0931YTNFQ the bullets say hand tightening and the included-components line also names a chuck key, so a key is not confirmed. Ejoyous is not settled. The title says keyed, and the handle-type attribute says hand-tightened. Leave it off both lists until you have the chuck in your hand. If you only drill forwards, and you can accept a sleeve that may lock, keyless is the recommendation. If you will reverse or tap, keyed is the recommendation.

Common questions

Should I buy a keyed or a keyless chuck for a lathe tailstock?
Keyed if you will reverse the spindle or back a tap out. Ordinary keyless if you drill forwards and can accept that the sleeve may lock. A tailstock does not change that split. Quill travel is a separate limit.
Will a keyless chuck let go of a tap when I reverse?
It tends to. That is the common report from Model Engineer owners using a tailstock chuck. Some Arc Euro keyless chucks are reported to hold, including for power tapping. None of these listings documents a reverse lock. If the tap has to stay in the jaws, buy a keyed chuck.
Why can I not undo a keyless chuck after a heavy cut?
Forward feed winds a self-tightening sleeve tighter, and a hex shank or a holesaw that creeps back in the jaws jams it further. Stop the spindle before you use a strap wrench or a spanner with the knurl protected. Do not run the chuck backwards into a block of wood.
Is a keyless chuck safer because there is no key?
No. The danger is a key left in the chuck, which you avoid by taking the key out. The Rotork report is one ejected key, not a failure rate for these products. A keyless sleeve can still lock.
The Ejoyous title says keyed and an attribute says hand-tightened. Which is it?
Both lines are on the listing, and they disagree. The title says a key. The handle-type attribute says hand-tightened. No UK review settles it. Do not buy it as a confirmed keyed chuck for tapping, or as a confirmed keyless chuck.
Can I use a holesaw in a self-tightening chuck?
You can start one. Owners report that the hex shank creeps and the sleeve then will not release. A keyed chuck avoids that jam. If it has already locked, stop the machine. A strap wrench is what those owners reached for, not a second cut.
