Parquet varnish comparison 2026

The best Parquet varnishes, compared.

Top pick: Bona Mega Evo extra matt 1 litre Best value: Sadolin floor varnish satin 2.5 litres – About £18 a litre at score 80, with a named interior wood floor and the largest review sample, after the top pick is excluded. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.
Peter F.Editor

Parquet varnish is a clear film for a solid or engineered wood block floor. Trade sheets call the same tin a lacquer. DIY labels say floor varnish or floor sealer. You want a product that names floors or parquet, states a coverage, names a sheen, and can be used in a lived-in house. A mop-on polish and a coloured varnish for doors are different products, and they are not in this table. Six amazon.co.uk listings were read on 21 October 2026. Prices are the saved shelf figures and they move. Nothing here was coated, slip-tested or sanded. The top pick is Bona Mega matt, 1 litre, at £30.42, score 84. The best value is Sadolin satin, 2.5 litres, at £44.99, score 80. System, sheen and litres, before any tin, are in the [parquet varnish buying guide](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/parquet-varnish/sub/parquet-varnish-buying-guide). A 1 litre tin is a small room or a repair. A 12 square metre hall at 10 square metres per litre and three coats is about 3.6 litres before waste. Underfloor heating is named on only one listing in this set. A missing line means the file does not say it.

The best Parquet varnishes in detail

Bona Mega Evo extra matt 1 litre

Rank 1

Bona Mega Evo extra matt 1 litre

∼£34

Our view

Bona Mega Evo extra matt is a 1 litre tin at £33.99. It scores 55. Bullets claim non-yellowing, no primer, and resistance to wear, scratches and chemicals. Those lines are claims on this ASIN, not a test of adhesion or wear. Recommended uses list wood furniture, floors and cabinets, so it is broader than a parquet-only lacquer. Coverage is given as 200 to 300 square feet per litre, not in square metres. The rating is 4.7 from four reviews and the saved listing contains no review sentences, so that average does not outrank Mega matt or Sadolin. Underfloor heating is not stated. The material field is empty. Four stars with no text are not a verdict.

Pros

  • Extra matt 1 litre at £33.99
  • Bullets claim non-yellowing and that no primer is needed
  • Coverage is printed as 200 to 300 square feet per litre
  • Recommended uses include floors as well as furniture and cabinets

Cons

  • 4.7 from four reviews, and the saved file has no review sentences
  • Underfloor heating is not stated
  • The material field is empty
  • The listing gives square feet, not a square-metre figure

Best for: A trial litre of extra matt where you accept a four-review file and a no-primer bullet that has not been tested here.

Less suitable: Anyone who would rank it above Mega matt or Sadolin on the star average alone.

Common questions

Does the listing say you need a primer?

A bullet says no need for primer. That line is on this ASIN only. It is not a test of adhesion.

What coverage is printed?

200 to 300 square feet per litre. The file does not also print a square-metre figure.

Are there written reviews?

The star line is 4.7 from 4 reviews. The saved file has no review text, so praise and complaints are unknown.

Sadolin floor varnish satin 2.5 litres

Rank 2

Sadolin floor varnish satin 2.5 litres

∼£45

Our view

Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish satin is the domestic 2.5 litre tin in this set, priced at £44.99, which is about £18 a litre. It scores 80 and takes the best-value badge once the top pick is set aside. The listing limits it to interior wood floors and excludes laminate, with coverage stated as up to 15 m² per litre. The 4.6 average comes from 418 reviews, but a large part of the written sample is doors, skirtings and furniture rather than parquet. Floor reviews that do appear praise a clear satin. Repeated niggles are a lid that will not reseal and one leaked pack. Underfloor heating is not stated on this file. A unit-count field says 750 ml while the title says 2.5 litres, so check the tin. The sheet VOC figures are not copied onto the other ASINs.

Pros

  • 2.5 litres at £44.99, about £18 a litre
  • 4.6 from 418 reviews, the largest sample in the set
  • The listing limits it to interior wood floors and excludes laminate
  • Coverage is stated as up to 15 square metres per litre

Cons

  • A large part of the written sample is doors, skirtings and furniture rather than parquet
  • Underfloor heating is not stated on this file
  • Reviewers report a lid that will not reseal, and one pack leaked
  • A unit-count field says 750 ml while the title says 2.5 litres

Best for: An interior wood floor where you want a domestic satin tin and you will check the can is actually 2.5 litres.

Less suitable: Laminate, or a heated parquet floor where the listing itself must name underfloor heating.

Common questions

Can it go on laminate?

The bullet says it is for interior wood floors and not suitable for laminate. The stairs, primer and waterproof questions on the page have no answer in the saved file.

Is the pack 750 ml or 2.5 litres?

The title and the liquid-volume field say 2.5 litres. A unit-count field says 750 ml. Treat that clash as a catalogue error and check the tin.

Why do reviews mention a white liquid?

Several reviewers say it looks white in the tin and dries clear. That is what they report. It is not a measured drying test.

Bona Mega matt 1 litre

Rank 3

Bona Mega matt 1 litre

∼£30

Our view

Bona Mega matt in a 1 litre pack is the clearest floor lacquer in this set that also has a usable amazon.co.uk review sample. It scores 84, the highest stored figure, so it is the top pick. The listing states 8 to 10 square metres per litre and a bullet says it is highly recommended for underfloor heating. The average is 4.6 from 74 reviews. Written reviews mostly describe easy application, a mild matt and low smell, plus one leak in transit and a failed attempt to fill wide gaps with sawdust. The recommended-use line also lists furniture and cladding, so it is not a floor-only label. At £30.42 it is a small-room tin, not a whole-flat can. No primer line is printed on this ASIN, and that claim should not be copied from Mega Evo. No film in this set was coated for this comparison.

Pros

  • 1 litre matt at £30.42, rated 4.6 from 74 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • The listing states 8 to 10 square metres per litre
  • A bullet says it is highly recommended for underfloor heating
  • Written reviews describe easy application, a mild matt and low smell

Cons

  • Recommended use also lists furniture and cladding, so it is not a floor-only label
  • One review reported a leak in transit
  • A reviewer could not fill wide gaps with sawdust and this lacquer
  • A 1 litre tin covers a small room, not a whole flat

Best for: A small hall or a repair where you want a matt floor lacquer that names coverage and underfloor heating.

Less suitable: A whole flat that needs several litres a coat, or a job that needs a primer line printed on this ASIN.

Common questions

Does this listing mention underfloor heating?

Yes. A bullet says it is highly recommended for underfloor heating. The saved file does not give a surface-temperature limit.

How far does a litre go?

The listing says 8 to 10 m² per litre depending on porosity. That is the seller figure, not a measured result.

Does the file say you need a primer?

No primer line is printed on this ASIN. Do not copy the no-primer claim from Mega Evo onto this tin.

Rustins floor sealer satin 1 litre

Rank 4

Rustins floor sealer satin 1 litre

∼£18

Our view

Rustins Polyurethane Floor Sealer satin is the 1 litre, UK-made tin at £17.96, with parquet named in the bullets and a 4.3 average from 145 reviews. It scores 68. It is the lowest shelf price and the small-job pack, and it does not take the best-value badge because of the tacky-drying and satin-too-glossy reports. Some reviews praise application on wood and cork. Several say the film stayed tacky well into the next day or dried much glossier than satin. No underfloor-heating line and no numeric coverage appear in the spec fields. One reviewer quoted about 14 m² per litre from the tin and said cork used far more. The laminate question on the page is unanswered in the saved file.

Pros

  • 1 litre at £17.96, the lowest price in the set
  • Made in the United Kingdom, model PSFS1000
  • The bullets name hardwood, softwood and parquet
  • 4.3 from 145 reviews, with some praise for application on wood and cork

Cons

  • Several UK reviews say the floor stayed tacky for about 15 to 24 hours
  • Others say the dried film looked much glossier than satin
  • No numeric coverage and no underfloor-heating line in the spec fields
  • The laminate question on the page is unanswered in the saved file

Best for: A small interior wood or cork job where a cheap UK-made satin sealer is enough and you can wait out a slow dry.

Less suitable: A hallway you need to walk the next morning, or a matt sheen you have to match exactly.

Common questions

Does the listing name parquet?

Yes. A bullet says hardwood, softwood and parquet. Laminate is only asked as a question, with no answer in the file.

What do reviewers say about drying?

Several UK reviews say the floor stayed tacky for about 15 to 24 hours, longer than they expected from the tin. Others were happy with the build on wood or cork.

Is a coverage number printed in the spec line?

No. The spec line does not give a square-metre figure. One reviewer quoted about 14 m² per litre from the tin and said cork used far more.

Bona Mega silk matt 5 litres

Rank 5

Bona Mega silk matt 5 litres

∼£120

Our view

This is the 5 litre Bona Mega can at £119.94, about £24 a litre, with parquet and wooden floors in the recommended use and a bullet that says there is no limited pot time. It scores 62. The title says silk matt and the finish field says matte, so the sheen is not clean in the file. An allergy line names 5-decyne-4,7-diol, 2,4,7,9-tetramethyl, and says a safety data sheet is available on request. The average is 4.0 from 21 reviews, and the saved text is thin: short praise, plus one account of scratches after nine months. Coverage and underfloor heating are not on this ASIN’s file, so a heated floor still points at the 1 litre Mega matt listing, which does name heating. Confirm the sheen on the tin before you open a 5 litre can.

Pros

  • 5 litres at £119.94, about £24 a litre
  • Recommended use names parquet and wooden floors
  • A bullet says there is no limited pot time
  • Country of origin is Sweden, model WT133320002

Cons

  • The title says silk matt and the finish field says matte
  • 4.0 from 21 reviews, including one account of scratches after nine months
  • Coverage and underfloor heating are not on this ASIN’s file
  • An allergy line names 5-decyne-4,7-diol, 2,4,7,9-tetramethyl

Best for: A larger wooden floor where you want a 5 litre Mega can and you will confirm the sheen on the tin before you open it.

Less suitable: A heated floor that needs the heating sentence on this listing, or a buyer who treats 21 reviews as a wear trial.

Common questions

Is the sheen silk matt or matte?

The title says silk matt. The finish field says matte. The saved file does not resolve that clash.

Does the listing warn about allergy?

Yes. It says the product contains 5-decyne-4,7-diol, 2,4,7,9-tetramethyl, may cause allergic reactions, and that a safety data sheet is available on request.

What do the written reviews say about wear?

One floor restorer said it scratched and looked tatty after nine months. Other saved comments are short praise. Only four review bodies are in the file.

Bona Traffic GO semi-matt 5 litres

Rank 6

Bona Traffic GO semi-matt 5 litres

∼£207

Our view

Bona Traffic GO is listed as a 2K parquet lacquer in semi-matt, with a 5 litre title, polyurethane material and a price of £206.64, about £41 a litre. It scores 48, the lowest in this set, because the saved amazon.co.uk file has no star line and almost no listing detail. A single bullet repeats the name. There is no coverage, no primer line and no underfloor-heating line. The file does not print a mix ratio. Weight is 5 kg while the unit count says 1,000 g, and the part number on the file is WT400613012. It stays in the set because the product type is a parquet lacquer. It cannot be ranked on reviews that are not there. The maker sheet, not this file, is where a heavy-wear user would confirm pot life and cure.

Pros

  • The title describes a 2K parquet lacquer in semi-matt
  • The title pack is 5 litres at £206.64
  • Material is listed as polyurethane
  • It is the only 2K parquet lacquer kept in this set

Cons

  • No amazon.co.uk star line is in the saved file
  • No coverage, primer or underfloor-heating line
  • Weight is 5 kg while the unit-count field says 1,000 g
  • The saved file has one bullet that repeats the name, and no mix ratio

Best for: A heavy-wear parquet job where you already know Traffic GO from the maker’s sheet and you will check the can size before you pay £206.64.

Less suitable: A first floor varnish chosen from reviews, because this file has none.

Common questions

Is this a 2K parquet lacquer?

The title and the item type say Bona Traffic GO 2K parquet varnish, semi-matt, 5 litres. The file does not print a mix ratio.

Is there a star rating?

No customer-review line is in the saved file. The comparison score is 48 from the listing type and the pack, not from stars.

Which pack size should you trust?

The title says 5 litres and the weight is 5 kg. The unit-count field says 1,000 g. Check the can before you buy for a measured floor.

How we compared

Six amazon.co.uk parquet varnish listings were scored from the stored files on 21 October 2026, not in a lab. The stored scores are 84, 80, 68, 62, 55 and 48. Floor fit and the review sample carry that judgement. Price per litre is not a wear score. It decides the best-value badge after the scores, with the top pick excluded. The weights below present those checks as shares of 100.

1

Floor fit

40%

Points sit higher when the listing names an interior wood floor or parquet, a sheen, a pack size, and either a coverage figure or a clear floor-lacquer type. A furniture-and-cladding uses line, a laminate exclusion, and a missing coverage cell all change that fit.

2

Review sample

35%

A larger written amazon.co.uk sample scores higher than a star average on a handful of reviews. Door and skirting texts are marked down inside that sample. Four reviews with no sentences do not outrank a smaller average that has text. No star line cannot take review points.

3

Deductions

25%

Thin files, a sheen clash, a missing heating line where the comparison cares about it, and an empty review body come off. Tacky-drying and satin-too-glossy reports are a deduction. No support-ticket file exists, and price per litre is not one of these points.

Parquet varnish buying guide

Start with the floor, not the star line. The tin should name interior wood or parquet, state a sheen and a coverage, and match the pack to the room. Price per litre comes after that. None of these six listings was lab-tested.

What is parquet varnish?

Parquet varnish is a clear film finish for a solid or engineered wood block floor. On a trade sheet the same product is often a lacquer. On a DIY tin it may say floor varnish or floor sealer. A useful tin names interior wood floors or parquet, states a coverage, names a sheen, and is a water-borne or two-pack system you can apply in a lived-in house. A mop-on polymer polish and a coloured interior varnish for doors were taken out of this set.

Best for

  • Homeowners with a dull oak parquet floor who can clear one room
  • People comparing a £18 one-litre sealer with a £30 professional litre for a small hall
  • A heavy-wear room where you already know the 2K lacquer and will check the can

Not ideal for

  • Laminate, a mop-on polish, or a coloured varnish bought for doors
  • A whole flat or a stair you have not prepared before
  • A heated floor when this tin’s sheet does not mention underfloor heating

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Polish, joinery varnish, or laminate

A mop-on polymer polish and a coloured varnish for doors were removed from this set. Sadolin’s floor-varnish listing says it is not suitable for laminate. Coating laminate, or varnishing over wax, is a different job from these six tins.

  2. 2

One thick coat, or rugs too soon

Sheet times are a guide, not a result measured here. Sadolin says seven days before rugs and heavy furniture. Bona Mega says cover after about 7 days. Traffic GO says cover after at least 3 days. A thick coat in a cold room stretches those times.

  3. 3

Trusting stars when the reviews are about doors

Sadolin’s 418 reviews are the largest sample, and many texts are doors, skirtings and furniture. Mega Evo’s 4.7 from four reviews has no written comments in the file. Satin is not a shared scale: Rustins buyers reported a satin sealer drying like gloss.

What to weigh up

Floor fit

High

The tin should name an interior wood floor, parquet, or a wood-floor lacquer. Laminate is out. Sadolin’s listing says not suitable for laminate. A recommended-use line that also lists furniture, windows, roofs or cladding is a wider label, and Mega matt carries that line even though it is the top pick. Mega Evo lists floors, furniture and cabinets. Traffic GO is titled as a parquet lacquer, which is a clear floor type, but the saved file has almost no other detail.

Review sample

High

A larger written sample from amazon.co.uk counts for more than a star average on a handful of reviews. Sadolin is 4.6 from 418 reviews and is still marked down inside that sample because many captured texts are doors, skirtings and furniture. Floor reviews that do appear praise a clear satin. Mega matt is 4.6 from 74 reviews, closer to floor use, with notes on easy application, a mild matt and low smell, plus a leak and a failed gap-fill. That sample is why it leads the set.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Heated small hall

You are coating a small hall or a repair, and the listing itself must name underfloor heating. Bona Mega matt, 1 litre, is the top pick at £30.42. It scores 84, states 8 to 10 square metres per litre, and is 4.6 from 74 reviews. It is not a whole-flat can.

Domestic satin floor

You want a 2.5 litre satin for an interior wood floor, and laminate is already ruled out. Sadolin floor varnish satin is the best value at £44.99, about £18 a litre, score 80. Many of the 418 reviews are doors and skirtings, and underfloor heating is not on this file.

Small UK sealer

You want the lowest tin price for a small wood or cork job, and you can wait if the film stays tacky overnight. Rustins floor sealer satin is £17.96 for 1 litre, made in the United Kingdom, with parquet named on the listing. It scores 68 after tacky-drying and satin-too-glossy reports.

Common questions about Parquet varnishes

Which parquet varnish is the top pick in this comparison?
The top pick is Bona Mega matt, 1 litre, at £30.42. It scores 84, the highest stored figure in this set, with 4.6 from 74 reviews. The listing states 8 to 10 square metres per litre and says it is highly recommended for underfloor heating. Reviews with text mostly describe easy application, a mild matt and low smell. The use line also lists furniture and cladding. A 1 litre tin is a small room, not a whole flat.
Which parquet varnish is the best value?
The best value is Sadolin satin, 2.5 litres, at £44.99, about £18 a litre. It scores 80. The average is 4.6 from 418 reviews, the largest sample here, but many texts are doors, skirtings and furniture. The listing is for interior wood floors and not for laminate. Coverage is stated as up to 15 square metres per litre. Underfloor heating is not on this file. Rustins is cheaper per tin and scores 68 after tacky-drying reports.
How much does parquet varnish cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this set Rustins satin is £17.96 for 1 litre. Sadolin satin is £44.99 for 2.5 litres, about £18 a litre. Bona Mega matt is £30.42 for 1 litre, and Mega Evo is £33.99 for 1 litre. The 5 litre Mega is £119.94, about £24 a litre. Traffic GO is £206.64 with a 5 litre title, about £41 a litre. These are saved amazon.co.uk figures from 21 October 2026, and they move.
What should you check before you buy parquet varnish?
Check that the tin names an interior wood floor or parquet, not laminate, a furniture varnish or a mop-on polish. Choose a one-pack for a domestic room, or Traffic GO only if you already know that 2K system. Match the sheen on a sample, because satin is not a shared scale. Work out litres from the stated coverage, and leave the cure window before rugs. A star average on door reviews is not a parquet trial.
Can these tins go on laminate or on underfloor heating?
Sadolin’s listing says the satin is for interior wood floors and is not suitable for laminate. Underfloor heating is named only on Bona Mega matt, 1 litre, which says it is highly recommended. The other five files do not state it. A missing line means the listing does not say it. It is not a failed heat test. A note citing BS 8201 puts heated-floor timber around 6 to 8 percent moisture. Do not coat a wet floor.
What do the VOC rules mean for a floor lacquer?
SI 2012/1715 limits wood floor coatings to 140 g/l VOC if water-borne and 500 g/l if solvent-borne, ready to use. The label must show the subcategory, the limit and the product’s maximum. One Sadolin sheet prints max 36 g/l, and another Crown sheet prints max 27 g/l. Use the tin in your hand. Those figures are not copied onto the other ASINs. The ceilings are category limits, not a score in this table.
Why is a high star average not enough?
A high average on a thin file is not a verdict. Mega Evo is 4.7 from four reviews, with no review sentences in the file, so it scores 55. Traffic GO has no star line, so it scores 48. Sadolin’s 418 reviews are not a floor-only trial, because many texts are doors and skirtings. Rustins is 4.3 from 145, with repeated reports that the floor stayed tacky. Read what the reviews are about.
How long before you can walk on a new coat?
These times come from maker sheets, not from a floor we coated. Sadolin says no heavy traffic for 24 hours, and seven days before rugs. Bona Mega says light use about 8 hours and cover after about 7 days. Traffic GO says full use about 24 hours and cover after at least 3 days. Cold rooms and thick coats stretch them. Coats and rugs are in how to apply parquet varnish.

Our verdict

The top pick is Bona Mega matt, 1 litre, at £30.42. It scores 84, states 8 to 10 square metres per litre, names underfloor heating, and has 4.6 from 74 reviews. The best value is Sadolin satin, 2.5 litres, at £44.99, about £18 a litre, score 80, with the largest review sample and a listing that excludes laminate. Rustins is cheaper per tin and scores 68 after tacky-drying reports. Traffic GO is the only 2K parquet lacquer kept here, and it has no star line in the saved file. This was not a lab test.
