How to choose a parquet floor varnish

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a dull wood block floor, a weekend, and a shelf of tins that say varnish, lacquer or sealer. Parquet floor varnish, on this page, means a clear film that cures on interior wood blocks. It is not a mop-on polish, and it is not a furniture varnish sold for doors. You should leave knowing which system you need, which sheen to expect, and how many litres a room takes. The six amazon.co.uk tins, with prices in pounds, are ranked on the [parquet varnish comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/parquet-varnish). Peter F. read the saved listings and the makers’ sheets on 21 October 2026. We did not coat a test floor. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What counts as parquet varnish

A floor film has to name floors, parquet, or a wood-floor lacquer. Trade sheets often call that film a lacquer. A DIY tin may say floor varnish or floor sealer. The job is the same when the label is an interior wood floor and the product cures into a film you can walk on. A polymer polish you mop on, a coloured stain, and an interior varnish sold for doors and skirtings are different products. Those were left out of this comparison, even when the word varnish appears on the tin. Sadolin’s polyurethane floor varnish limits the listing to interior wooden floors and says it is not suitable for laminate. Rustins names hardwood, softwood and parquet on the 1 litre satin sealer. The saved page leaves the laminate question unanswered, so you should not treat silence as permission. Bona Mega’s 1 litre matt tin names floors and also furniture, windows, roofs and cladding. You buy it as a floor lacquer only if you follow the floor lines, not the cladding line. If a tin you already own says interior varnish and the uses are doors, that is joinery stock. Lacq, Fortress and Liberon floor varnish are not among the six saved listings, so they are not ranked here.

Sheen and how many litres

Satin, matt, extra matt, silk matt and semi-matt are not one shared scale. Rustins buyers reported a satin sealer that dried much glossier than they expected from the word on the tin. If the sheen matters, look at a dried patch on an offcut from your own blocks, in daylight, before you commit the room. Coverage is a maker’s guide, not a measured result from this desk. Sadolin states up to 15 square metres per litre on smooth planed timber. Bona Mega’s 1 litre listing states 8 to 10 square metres per litre, depending on porosity. The first coat on freshly sanded oak usually goes less far than a later coat on a sealed surface. A 1 litre tin is a small room or a repair. That is true of Bona Mega matt at £30.42 and of Rustins at £17.96. Sadolin’s 2.5 litre satin at £44.99 is the domestic pack in this set, about £18 a litre. Mega Evo prints 200–300 square feet per litre, not square metres. The 5 litre Mega can is £119.94, about £24 a litre. Traffic GO’s saved amazon.co.uk file does not print a coverage number at all. Bona’s Traffic GO data sheet does state a spreading rate, and that sheet is not the same thing as the listing cell.

A domestic tin or a trade lacquer

Most rooms in a house are a one-pack job. Sadolin is sold as a water-borne polyurethane floor varnish for interior wood floors. Bona describes Mega as a one-component lacquer for heavy domestic and light commercial wear. The 1 litre matt listing is the top pick in this set because it names coverage, names underfloor heating, and has 4.6 from 74 reviews. That is a listing score, not a lab wear test. You still skip the 1 litre tin if the room needs more than about a litre a coat. Rustins at £17.96 is the small-budget sealer, with parquet on the label and 4.3 from 145 reviews. The repeated complaint is a film that stayed tacky well into the next day, so the low price is a poor reason to use it on a hall you must walk in the morning. Sadolin is the best value pack here on price per litre and the size of the review file. The limit is real: many of those 418 reviews are doors and skirtings, and underfloor heating is not stated on that file. Who should leave each tin on the shelf is on best parquet varnish. Heavy wear is the case for a two-component lacquer, and only if you already know you need one. Bona Traffic GO is the only 2K parquet lacquer kept here, semi-matt, £206.64 on a 5 litre title, described as a built-in hardener rather than a separate bottle. The saved file has no star rating, so it cannot be the top pick on reviews. Bona’s own UK FAQ treats a traffic lacquer as the heavy commercial product and Mega as the one-component domestic lacquer. Mega Evo’s 4.7 from four reviews, with no written comments in the file, is not a reason to put it above either. The 5 litre Mega can names parquet and wooden floors, then clashes silk matt in the title with matte in the finish field, on 4.0 from 21 reviews.

What the label has to show

Read the line for volatile organic compounds before you trust a low-odour phrase. Under the VOC in Paints, Varnishes and Vehicle Refinishing Products Regulations 2012 (SI 2012/1715), one-pack performance coatings that cover wood floors, and two-pack floor coatings, are capped at 140 grams per litre when water-borne and 500 grams per litre when solvent-borne, ready to use. The label should show the subcategory, the legal limit, and that product’s own maximum. Sadolin’s sheet prints a maximum of 36 grams per litre on one PDF and 27 grams per litre on another Crown sheet, both against a 140 gram category line. If the two sheets disagree, the tin in your hand is the one you follow. Low odour is not a non-toxic claim, and this page will not make one. Bona Mega’s GB safety data sheet is not classified under UK CLP and still warns that 2,4,7,9-tetramethyldec-5-yne-4,7-diol may cause an allergic reaction. The 5 litre Mega listing prints that allergy line in plain words. None of these files was slip-tested here, so a matt sheen is not a non-slip certificate. Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects goods to match their description. A 2.5 litre title with a unit-count field that says 750 ml, which is what Sadolin’s saved file does, is a catalogue clash you check on the can before you buy for a measured room. Laminate is the mistake that wastes the weekend. Sadolin excludes it in a bullet. If the floor is a click laminate with a photographic grain, stop. If the blocks are loose, cupped, or stuck down with an unknown black adhesive, the tin size is the wrong question. That floor wants a contractor before any varnish. Coating steps, once the wood is sound, are on how to varnish parquet.

Common questions

Is parquet varnish the same as floor lacquer?
In UK shops the words overlap. A lacquer, a floor varnish and a floor sealer can all be a clear curing film for interior wood blocks, if the label names floors or parquet. A mop-on polish and a door varnish are not that film, even when the title says varnish. In this set, Sadolin is sold as floor varnish, Rustins as a floor sealer, and Bona Mega and Traffic GO as lacquers. Match the floor use, not the word alone.
Can I use parquet floor varnish on laminate?
Not if you follow Sadolin. That listing says interior wood floors and not suitable for laminate. Rustins names parquet and does not answer the laminate question in the saved file, which is not a yes. Click laminate has a factory wear layer, and a block-floor lacquer is the wrong system for it. If you are unsure which floor you have, lift a threshold or look at an edge before you buy.
How many litres do I need for a 12 square metre hall?
Use the coverage on your tin as a guide, then add a thirsty first coat and some waste. At 10 square metres per litre and three coats, 12 square metres is about 3.6 litres before spills. Sadolin’s up to 15 square metres per litre makes the same room about 2.4 litres, which is tight inside a 2.5 litre tin. A 1 litre can is a repair or a very small room, not that hall on bare sanded oak.
Should I buy satin or matt?
Buy the sheen you have seen dry, not the word you prefer in a catalogue. Satin is not a shared scale across brands. Rustins reviewers said a satin sealer dried much glossier than satin. Bona Mega matt is described in reviews as a mild matt. Mega Evo is sold as extra matt, with only four reviews and no written text, so you cannot check that sheen from the file. Test an offcut in daylight.
Do I need a 5 litre can?
Only when the coverage sum says so. A 12 square metre hall at three coats is often inside a 2.5 litre domestic tin if the maker’s higher coverage holds, and it is over a 1 litre tin. The 5 litre Bona Mega can at £119.94 suits a larger floor, with a sheen clash still unresolved in the file. Traffic GO at £206.64 is a heavy-wear 2K tin, not the default can for a spare room.
Is an £18 tin enough, or do I need a trade lacquer?
Rustins at £17.96 can be enough for a small interior wood or cork job if you accept the tacky-drying reports and you are not walking on it the next morning. A trade lacquer is the better fit when the room is a shop, a hard hallway, or a floor the maker places in a heavy-wear system. Traffic GO is that type in this set, and it has no amazon.co.uk star line in the saved file, so you are buying the product type, not a review verdict.
