Varnish parquet over underfloor heating

Updated: 23 October 2026

The oak blocks are warm underfoot in January, and you want a clear film that will not craze when the heating comes back. Varnish parquet underfloor heating only if the lacquer’s own sheet names heated wood floors, you keep the heat off while it cures, and you do not borrow that approval for a tin that never mentions it. This page stays with heat and moisture. The six prices sit on the [parquet varnish comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/parquet-varnish). Peter F. read the Bona Mega sheet, the saved amazon.co.uk files, and the public note of BS 8201:2011 on 21 October 2026. We did not heat a floor. Why heat changes the floor

Wood moves. A parquet floor over heating dries a little further when the system is on, then takes up moisture again when it is off, and the blocks expand and shrink across a season. A lacquer is a film stuck to that movement. Makers who are happy for you to use their product on a heated floor say so, because the film has to stay attached while the timber cycles. A tin that is silent has not failed a test on this desk. It has also not been approved by anything we can quote. Moisture is the number people want, and the sources do not give you one varnish pass mark. BS 8201:2011 is the British Standard code of practice for installing wood and wood-based panel flooring. It is an installation code, not a lacquer ranking, and this page does not quote its clauses. A merchant note that cites it puts timber over underfloor heating around 6 to 8 per cent moisture content. Treat that as their guide to the installed floor, not as a pass mark printed on these tins. Sadolin’s own sheets, in the notes we used, disagree between a maximum of about 16 per cent and about 18 per cent before coating. If your packed sheet states a maximum, follow that tin. If it states nothing, do not invent 6 per cent or 18 per cent as if we had measured your hall. The saved listings also do not print a surface-temperature cap such as 27°C. Trade talk sometimes uses a figure like that for the top of a heated wood floor. It is not a line on these six amazon.co.uk files, so it is not a claim this comparison will hang on a product. If the heating has never been commissioned, if you do not know the moisture, or if the blocks are already loose or cupped, stop and get a floor fitter before you buy a lacquer. Heat makes a loose block louder. It does not glue it down. Electric mats and warm-water pipes are not the same installation, and the files in this set do not split them. Pallmann’s UK sheets for other lacquers, which are not in this comparison, talk about warm-water underfloor heating when they mean that system. Bona Mega’s heating line does not, on the listing we saved, say pipes only or mats only. Do not stretch it into a permission slip for a system the sheet never names, and do not refuse it for electric heat merely because another brand mentioned water. If your heating type is unclear, ask the person who fitted it before you coat.

Which listing says underfloor heating

Only one saved listing prints the sentence. Bona Mega matt, 1 litre, ASIN B0733GY8F4, at £30.42, has a bullet that says it is highly recommended for underfloor heating. The same file states 8 to 10 square metres per litre and sits at 4.6 from 74 reviews. Bona’s Mega data sheet agrees for the product: the formulation is presented for floors that move, including planks and underfloor heating, on bare wood, with a Bona primer, and with the floor left uncovered for about 7 days. That is why this tin is the top pick when the floor is heated and the room is small enough for a litre. The uses line still mentions furniture and cladding, so it is not a floor-only label, and one litre is not three coats of a large room. Who each tin is for, including this one, is on best parquet varnish. The other five stay unstated, which means the file does not say yes. It does not mean we have classed them as unsafe. Sadolin satin, 2.5 litres at £44.99, is the best value domestic tin for an ordinary interior wood floor, and its sheet in the facts used here does not add a heating sentence. Leave it unstated. Do not upgrade it because it is water-based. Rustins at £17.96 names parquet and says nothing about heating. The 5 litre Bona Mega at £119.94 names parquet and wooden floors and does not repeat the heating bullet that appears on the 1 litre matt listing. Same brand is not the same ASIN. Mega Evo at £33.99 claims no primer and does not mention heating. Traffic GO at £206.64 is a 2K parquet lacquer with no heating line and no star rating in the saved file. Other Bona lacquers being used on heated floors does not approve Traffic GO. If you need the words on the listing you are about to pay for, the 1 litre Mega matt is the only match in this set. If the room is too big for a litre a coat, you are outside what this file can justify. Buying three of the 1 litre tins is a pack-size decision, not a new approval, and you should still read the tin you receive in case the heating line is missing from a different Mega variant. The 5 litre can’s sheen already clashes between silk matt and matte. Do not assume its silence on heating is a typo for the 1 litre bullet.

Heat off, then back slowly

Coat with the heating off, on a floor that has not been driven hot the same day. A warm surface flashes water out of a water-based lacquer, leaves lap marks, and can skin a thick edge while the middle is still soft. Bona’s Mega sheet wants at least 13°C in the room. Sadolin, if you were using it on an unheated floor, wants about 8 to 25°C and says not to thin. Turning the heating up to help it dry fights both of those windows. Sanding, denib and the ordinary recoat clocks stay on how to varnish parquet. Do not invent a third clock because the floor has pipes under it. Leave the heat off through the cure window on the sheet you are actually using. For Bona Mega that means light use after about 8 hours and no cover for about 7 days. A rug on day three holds warmth and grit against a young film. Socks are not a sofa, and a dog’s path along a radiator-free corridor is still traffic. When the cover time has passed, bring the heating back gently rather than straight to a midwinter setpoint. The saved files do not print a daily ramp or a maximum surface temperature, so this is a caution, not a quoted protocol. If the system only has an on or off, wait the full cover time, then resume the pattern the floor was designed for, and watch the joints for a few days. Call a professional when the heating has never been commissioned, when you cannot measure moisture and the sheet asks for a figure, or when blocks are loose. A lacquer will not correct a floor that was laid over a cold screed and then cooked. Commissioning, in the installation sense of running the heat before wood goes down, is a fitter’s job. It is already too late to redo that if the parquet is in place, which is another reason not to guess. If the film later cracks along the joints, the honest causes include movement, a coat that was too thick, and heat applied too soon. They do not include a star rating.

Common questions

Can parquet be varnished over underfloor heating?
Yes, when the lacquer you buy says heated wood floors are within its use, the blocks are sound, and you keep the heat off while the film cures. Bona Mega’s data sheet is written that way, and the 1 litre matt amazon.co.uk listing says it is highly recommended for underfloor heating. A generic floor varnish with no heating line is not automatically banned. It is unapproved by that file, so you should not tell yourself the maker has signed it off.
Which tin in this set actually says so?
Bona Mega matt, 1 litre, at £30.42, ASIN B0733GY8F4. The bullet says highly recommended for underfloor heating, and the Mega data sheet names underfloor heating for that lacquer. Sadolin, Rustins, the 5 litre Mega, Mega Evo and Traffic GO do not state it in the saved fields. The 1 litre tin is still a small-room pack: 8 to 10 square metres per litre, not a whole flat. Reviews sit at 4.6 from 74, with comments on a mild matt and low smell, plus one leak in transit.
Should the heating be on while the lacquer dries?
No. Apply and cure with the heating off, inside the temperature on the sheet. Bona Mega asks for at least 13°C, which is room warmth, not a hot floor. Heat during drying can flash a water-based lacquer and mark the laps. After Mega’s cover time of about 7 days, bring the system back gently. These listings do not print a degree-per-day ramp, so do not treat a forum schedule as the maker’s instruction.
What moisture content should the floor be at?
There is no single varnish pass mark in this set. A merchant note that cites BS 8201:2011 puts timber over underfloor heating around 6 to 8 per cent. That standard is an installation code, and the percentage is the merchant’s citation, not a line we copied from the standard and not a reading from your floor. Sadolin sheets used in our notes differ between about 16 and 18 per cent as a maximum before coating. Follow the figure on the tin in your hand. If there is no figure and you cannot measure, do not coat.
Will the lacquer crack if the floor gets too hot?
It can craze or split at the joints if the timber moves hard, if the film was applied too thick, or if heat goes back on before the sheet allows. This comparison did not crack-test any tin, and none of the six listings prints a 27°C surface cap, so that number is not a product claim here. Using a lacquer whose sheet names heated floors, and waiting out the cover time, is the control you actually have. Loose blocks will still move, lacquer or not.
Is electric heating different from warm water?
They are different builds, and this set does not score them separately. The Mega matt listing does not say warm water only or electric mats only. Other makers, such as Pallmann on lacquers we did not keep, sometimes specify warm-water systems in their own words. Do not copy that sentence onto Bona, and do not assume Traffic GO is cleared for either system because the name is Bona. If you do not know which system is under the floor, ask before you buy.
Does a missing heating line mean the tin is unsafe?
It means unstated. Sadolin can still be a sound interior floor varnish, which is why it is the best value tin for an ordinary wood floor, and its file simply does not claim heated parquet. Unsafe would need a warning or a failure we do not have. Do not fill the gap by saying water-based, so it must be fine on heating. If you need the sentence, buy the listing that prints it, and keep the heat off while that film cures.
