The best Plastic primers, compared.

Peter F.Editor

A plastic primer is a thin coat that helps later paint grip plastic. In the UK you buy one for car trim, a miniature, or a small craft piece, and those jobs are not the same product. You tell a suitable one by the plastics the maker names, whether the film is a thin adhesion layer or a grey build coat, the format, and that product's own dry-time line. The plastic check comes first. A rigid-plastic aerosol is not a waiver for every bumper. Polypropylene and polyethylene are often excluded even when the title says plastic. A miniature spray wants a thin film. An airbrush bottle suits a wet week indoors. Artist gesso that lists plastic beside canvas is a craft ground, not a panel primer. Those checks are in the [plastic primer buying guide](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/plastic-primer/sub/plastic-primer-buying-guide). Aerosols need real ventilation. A household can is not a two-pack isocyanate system, and a non-toxic line is not a closed-room permit. Nothing here was lab-tested for adhesion or weathering. Read the surface list for the part in your hand before you buy.

The best Plastic primers in detail

Simply Auto grey plastic primer, 500 ml

Rank 1

Simply Auto grey plastic primer, 500 ml

Our view

The Simply Auto grey plastic primer, model SP-050, is a 500 ml acrylic aerosol at £8.99, with adhesion promoter among the special features and a printed dry time of 0.5 hours. Across 3 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 5.0, and the score is held at 62 because that sample is too small for a durability claim. The file contains one United Kingdom review, about bonnet grills finished under gloss black. Full cure is not stated, so the half-hour dry line is not a promise about the topcoat. The bullets name plastic and also ABS and other materials, which is a wider list than three reviews can prove. Listed weight is 420 g. A five-star line from three people does not outrank 4.6 from 1,410 on the Hycote can, and it is not evidence that the film bonds polypropylene.

Pros

  • 500 ml, model SP-050, at £8.99
  • Special features include adhesion promoter and a fast-drying line
  • Dry time printed as 0.5 hours
  • One UK review describes bonnet grills under gloss black

Cons

  • Only 3 reviews, so 5.0 is not a deep sample
  • Full cure is not stated
  • That single UK text is not a polypropylene test

Best for: You want another grey 500 ml can beside Autotek and you will treat three reviews as a thin record.

Less suitable: You need a large UK review pool, or proof on a coded bumper plastic.

Common questions

How many reviews are on the listing?

The saved line is 5.0 from 3. The file contains one UK review, about bonnet grills under gloss black. That is too small a sample for a fault theme or a durability claim.

What dry time is printed?

0.5 hours. Full cure is not stated. Special features say fast drying, UV and water resistant, and adhesion promoter.

Vallejo surface primer, grey, 60 ml

Rank 2

Vallejo surface primer, grey, 60 ml

Our view

The Vallejo surface primer, model VJ73601, is a 60 ml grey acrylic airbrush primer at £8.06 for modelling and miniatures. Across 2,030 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.6, and the score is 76. The stated surfaces are resin, PVC, brass, white metal and wood, and the listing does not mention a car bumper. United Kingdom reviews describe airbrushing indoors when the weather is poor, with little thinning and an even coat. One review says it did not stick after soap and isopropyl alcohol, so a wiped figure is not a guarantee. Dry time prints as 3 hours and full cure as 4 hours, and Is Waterproof is true. Coverage is given as 10–15 square metres per litre, which is a litre rate, not a claim that this 60 ml bottle covers a panel. At £8.06 you are buying a small bottle, not a 400 ml can.

Pros

  • 60 ml grey, model VJ73601, 4.6 from 2,030 reviews
  • Surfaces include resin and PVC
  • UK reviews describe indoor airbrushing in poor weather
  • Waterproof set to true; dry time 3 hours and full cure 4 hours

Cons

  • £8.06 buys 60 ml, not a 400 ml aerosol
  • One review reports no adhesion after soap and isopropyl alcohol
  • No car-bumper surface on the listing
  • It is an airbrush primer, not a rattle can

Best for: You prime resin or PVC miniatures indoors and you already have an airbrush.

Less suitable: You need to coat a bumper, or you have no airbrush and a dry afternoon for a spray.

Common questions

Does this listing mention car bumpers?

No. Surfaces are resin, PVC, brass, white metal, and wood. The title is an airbrush primer for modelling and miniatures, 60 ml, grey polyurethane in the bullet.

Can you use it when it is raining?

UK reviews describe airbrushing indoors when the weather is poor, with little thinning and an even coat. One review says it did not stick after soap and isopropyl alcohol. Dry time prints as 3 hours.

Hycote grey plastic primer, 400 ml

Rank 3

Hycote grey plastic primer, 400 ml

Our view

The Hycote grey plastic primer, model XUK612, is a 400 ml acrylic aerosol at £7.99 on amazon.co.uk, with dry time and full cure both printed as 24 hours. Across 1,410 reviews the line is 4.6, which is why the score is 79 and why this can is the best value in the set when the plastic is one the maker allows. United Kingdom reviewers use it on roof boxes, slot-car bodies and models, and they also mention a strong smell and a fast spray that can hide detail. One of those reviews describes a reaction when the next product went on too soon, so the 24-hour line is a limit you can hit in a weekend job. The listing says the surface is plastic and the use is car, while Hycote's own sheet names bumpers and wheel trims and then excludes polyolefins, which means polypropylene and polyethylene. Is Waterproof is false and the water-resistance line says water resistant, so both stay visible. At this price it is a large grey can, and it is the wrong film if you need a thin coat on a polystyrene kit.

Pros

  • 400 ml grey acrylic aerosol, model XUK612, listed at £7.99
  • 4.6 from 1,410 amazon.co.uk reviews, the deepest car-primer sample here
  • UK reviews name roof boxes, slot-car bodies and models
  • Printed dry time and full cure are both 24 hours

Cons

  • UK reviews mention a strong smell and a fast spray that can hide detail
  • A reaction when the next product went on too soon
  • Hycote's sheet excludes polyolefins, flexible plastics and polystyrene
  • Is Waterproof is false while the water line says water resistant

Best for: You are priming rigid car plastic the maker sheet allows, and you want the lowest well-reviewed grey can in this set.

Less suitable: You need a polypropylene bumper, a thin film on a polystyrene kit, or a single clear waterproof flag.

Common questions

What surface does this listing name?

The surface recommendation is plastic, and the specific use is car. It is an acrylic aerosol, model XUK612, 400 ml. Dry time and full cure both print as 24 hours.

Does the listing say it is waterproof?

Is Waterproof is false. The water-resistance line says water resistant. Both lines are printed on the listing.

What do the UK reviews repeat?

Reviewers use it on roof boxes, slot-car bodies, and models. They also mention a strong smell, a fast spray that can hide detail, and a reaction if the next product goes on too soon.

Autotek grey plastic primer, 500 ml

Rank 4

Autotek grey plastic primer, 500 ml

∼£10

Our view

The Autotek grey plastic primer, model AT00PPG500, is a 500 ml acrylic aerosol at £9.94, with dry time and full cure both printed as 24 hours. Across 895 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.6, and the score is 74. United Kingdom reviewers praise a base on plastic items, wheels and scale models, and they also say the coat can be heavy and need flatting. On flat miniature surfaces the same reviews describe runs and streaks, so this reads as a trim film rather than a figure primer. Is Waterproof is true, and the special-features line says fade resistant and UV resistant, which is a listing claim rather than a weathering test. Item weight prints 48.5 g while the size line says 460 g and the title says 500 ml, so treat 48.5 g as a catalogue error. The container-type field says bottle even though the product is an aerosol. Tetrosyl's trade line is rigid plastics and metals, which is not an approval for a flexible polypropylene bumper.

Pros

  • 500 ml grey aerosol, model AT00PPG500, at £9.94
  • 4.6 from 895 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Waterproof set to true on the listing
  • UK reviews include wheels and other plastic items

Cons

  • Reviewers say the coat can be heavy and need flatting
  • Runs and streaks on flat miniature surfaces
  • Item weight of 48.5 g conflicts with a 500 ml can
  • Rigid-plastics description, not a polypropylene approval

Best for: You want a 500 ml grey can with a waterproof flag, for rigid plastic or metal trim, and you will flat a heavy coat.

Less suitable: You are priming a flat miniature, or you need the weight row to match the fill.

Common questions

Is the waterproof line a yes?

Yes on this file. Is Waterproof is true and the water-resistance level says waterproof. Fade resistant and UV resistant are the special-features line, not a test result.

Why does the weight look wrong?

Item weight prints 48.5 g. The size line says 460 g and the title says 500 ml. Treat 48.5 g as a catalogue error.

What do UK reviews say about the film?

They praise a base on plastic items, wheels, and scale models. They also say the coat can be heavy and need flatting, and that it runs and streaks on flat miniature surfaces.

Nicpro white gesso, 513 ml

Rank 5

Nicpro white gesso, 513 ml

∼£15

Our view

The Nicpro white gesso, model AM-5032-500, is a 513 ml gel at £14.99 for acrylic and oil painting, and plastic is one surface in a list that also names canvas, wood, paper, terracotta and concrete. Across 189 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.6, and the score is 58 because this is artist gesso rather than a bumper primer. One short United Kingdom review calls it a brilliant undercoat for painting plastic. Other reviews use it on 3D prints, wood and a terracotta pot. A review calls the gel very thick and says it can be watered down. The listing says it is not water resistant, and dry time and full cure are not stated. Coverage prints as 10 square feet per 100 ml, which is an artist-board figure, not a car panel. It can sit under paint on a small plastic craft piece, and it is the wrong product for a wheel trim or a bumper.

Pros

  • 513 ml white gel, model AM-5032-500, at £14.99
  • 4.6 from 189 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • One UK review calls it an undercoat for painting plastic
  • Other notes cover 3D prints, wood and a terracotta pot

Cons

  • Artist gesso, not a car plastic primer
  • Not water resistant, and dry time is not stated
  • The gel is described as very thick
  • Plastic is one of several surfaces, beside canvas and paper

Best for: You want a white artist ground on a small plastic craft piece, a print or a board, and you will thin the gel if it is too stiff.

Less suitable: You are priming a bumper, a miniature that must keep sharp edges, or anything that has to stay waterproof.

No. It is white gesso for acrylic and oil painting. Plastic appears in the title and in a surface list that also names canvas, wood, and paper. The listing says it is not water resistant.

Do any UK reviews mention plastic?

One short UK review calls it a brilliant undercoat for painting plastic. Others use it on 3D prints, wood, and a terracotta pot. A review calls the gel very thick and says it can be watered down.

Army Painter colour primer, matt white, 400 ml

Rank 6

Army Painter colour primer, matt white, 400 ml

∼£12

Our view

The Army Painter colour primer, model CP3002, is a 400 ml matt white acrylic aerosol at £11.99 for crafts and model making on metals, plastics and resins. Across 11,306 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.5, the largest count in this set, which is why the score is 80 and why this can is the top pick on that score. The bullets say 15–20 cm, short bursts, and not in extreme heat, cold or humidity. Dry time prints as 1 hour and full cure as 2 hours, and the listing says it is not water resistant. United Kingdom reviewers describe coverage of figures, including a Spearhead-sized force, and a film that survives handling. The same sample includes a nozzle that had fallen off and a dry time longer than some other primers. The rank sits in toys and model primers, not DIY spray paint, so a bumper is the wrong job even though the score leads the table. Country of origin is Italy.

Pros

  • 400 ml matt white, model CP3002, at £11.99
  • 4.5 from 11,306 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Bullets name 15–20 cm and thin passes on metals, plastics and resins
  • UK reviews cover figure batches and a film that survives handling

Cons

  • Not water resistant on the listing
  • A loose nozzle and a longer dry time than some primers, both in UK reviews
  • A miniature colour primer, not a bumper or wheel-trim product
  • Bullets warn against extreme heat, cold or humidity

Best for: You are priming plastic, metal or resin miniatures outdoors in mild air and you want the deepest review sample in this set.

Less suitable: You are refinishing a car bumper, or you need a waterproof listing line.

Common questions

What is this primer for?

The listing says crafts and model making, on metals, plastics, and resins. It is a 400 ml matt white acrylic aerosol, model CP3002. The rank is in toys and model primers, not DIY spray paint.

How far does the listing say to spray?

The bullets say 15–20 cm, short bursts, and not in extreme heat, cold, or humidity. Dry time prints as 1 hour and full cure as 2 hours. It is not water resistant.

What do UK reviews repeat?

Coverage of figures, including a Spearhead-sized force, and a film that survives handling. Complaints include a nozzle that had fallen off and a dry time longer than some other primers.

Army Painter Warpaints Air, matt black, 100 ml

Rank 7

Army Painter Warpaints Air, matt black, 100 ml

∼£12

Our view

The Army Painter Warpaints Air, model AW2011, is listed at £11.50 for 100 ml of matt black, and the title calls it an airbrush primer. Across 407 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.5, and the score is held at 60 because the bullets describe a thinner and flow improver at 1 part medium to 1–2 parts paint. Item form says aerosol and container type says bottle, and a printed weight of 18 g is not the fill of a 100 ml bottle. United Kingdom reviews split: some say it covers models with no thinning and can be brushed, and others say it sludges, blocks a nozzle, scratches unless you leave it a day or two, and wiped off PLA after drying. Dry time and full cure both print as 24 hours, and it is not water resistant. Surfaces are listed as plastic, metal and resin. Until the title and the bullets agree, this is not a settled primer in the same sense as the 400 ml colour primer.

Pros

  • 100 ml matt black, model AW2011, at £11.50
  • 4.5 from 407 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Some UK reviews report coverage with no thinning, including by brush
  • Stated surfaces include plastic, metal and resin

Cons

  • Title says primer while the bullets describe a thinner
  • UK reviews include nozzle sludge, early scratches, and wipe-off on PLA
  • Item form says aerosol and the container type says bottle
  • Printed weight of 18 g does not match a 100 ml fill

Best for: You already use Army Painter Warpaints and you will read the bullets as a thinner until you have tested a scrap.

Less suitable: You need a settled plastic primer for figures or a bumper, or you are priming PLA and expect the film to stay put.

Common questions

Is this a primer or a thinner?

The title says matt black airbrush primer, 100 ml. The bullets describe a thinner and flow improver at 1 part medium to 1–2 parts paint. Item form says aerosol and container type says bottle. The file does not resolve that.

Nicpro airbrush primer, black, grey, and white

Rank 8

Nicpro airbrush primer, black, grey, and white

∼£15

Our view

The Nicpro airbrush primer set is black, grey and white, about 250 ml each, at £14.99, with a size line of 750 ml and a listed weight of 980 g. Across 612 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.4, and the score is 68. The bullets say it is ready to spray, and they also say to thin it if compressor airflow is below 20 litres per minute. United Kingdom reviews repeat both sides: some people thin it and like the coverage, and some call it too watery. Dry time prints as 4 hours while full cure prints as 2 hours, so those two clocks disagree in the file. It is not water resistant. The usage line says indoor, while specific uses say interior and exterior. Stated surfaces are plastics, metals, resins and wood, which is a model set, not a coded bumper primer.

Pros

  • Three colours, about 250 ml each, at £14.99
  • 4.4 from 612 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Stated surfaces include plastics, metals and resins
  • A printed airflow note at 20 litres per minute

Cons

  • UK reviews split on whether the primer is too watery
  • Dry time of 4 hours and full cure of 2 hours disagree
  • Not water resistant
  • Ready-to-spray and thin-it instructions sit on the same listing

Best for: You want black, grey and white airbrush primer in one order and you will test viscosity on a spare piece first.

Less suitable: You need one agreed dry clock, a waterproof film, or a car bumper primer.

Montana plastic primer, 400 ml

Rank 9

Montana plastic primer, 400 ml

∼£14

Our view

The Montana plastic primer, model MXT-T2000, is a 400 ml aerosol at £13.95, with specific use and surface both set to plastic. Across 123 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.0, and the score is 64. Dry time and full cure both print as 24 hours, and coverage is about 12–15 square metres. The written reviews saved in the file are labelled United States or Australia, not the United Kingdom, so they are not a British shopper sample. Those texts mention a faulty or leaking nozzle, broken stems, a can that looked part-used, and poor adhesion on PLA when the coat was built up, and they also praise craft use. Montana's own how-to names modified polypropylene blends and excludes HDPE, which is a different list from Hycote, and it is still not a UK bumper trial. Colour is not stated, and the manufacturer row says Star School Supplies.

Pros

  • 400 ml plastic primer with a printed coverage of about 12–15 square metres
  • Maker list includes modified PP/EPDM and excludes HDPE
  • 4.0 from 123 reviews, a larger sample than Simply Auto's three
  • Country of origin printed as Germany

Cons

  • £13.95 with a 4.0 star line, the dearest grey aerosol here
  • Stored review texts are not labelled United Kingdom
  • Nozzle faults and a PLA miss appear in those non-UK texts
  • Is Waterproof is false while the water line says water resistant

Best for: You have checked Montana's surface list, the part is on it, and you accept that the written reviews in the file are not UK-labelled.

Less suitable: You want UK-labelled bumper reviews, or you are priming HDPE or a PLA print.

Common questions

Are the written reviews from the United Kingdom?

The 4.0 from 123 is the amazon.co.uk star line. The review texts saved in the file are labelled United States or Australia, not the United Kingdom.

What failures appear in those texts?

A faulty or leaking nozzle, broken stems, a can that looked part-used, and poor adhesion on PLA when the coat was built up. Craft use is also praised. None of that is a UK-labelled sample.

What coverage and water lines are printed?

Coverage is about 12–15 square metres. Dry time and full cure are 24 hours. Is Waterproof is false and the water-resistance line says water resistant.

How we compared

Nine amazon.co.uk plastic primer listings were scored from the stored listing files, the review texts captured for each ASIN, and the maker pages named below. This was not a lab test of adhesion, weathering or film build. The starting point is the star line and the size of that review count. A 5.0 from three reviews does not lead the table. The score is held down when the title is not a straightforward plastic primer, when the written reviews in the file are not labelled United Kingdom, or when two fields on the same page disagree. A grey car aerosol, a miniature colour primer and a tub of artist gesso sit in one table and they are not the same job. That is not a bumper-versus-miniature ranking. Price is not part of the score. The top pick is the highest score: the matt white 400 ml model primer, because 4.5 from 11,306 is the deepest sample here. The best value is the lowest price among the well-reviewed grey aerosols, one point under that score. A seller's waterproof line, coverage figure or non-toxic claim stays a seller claim. The 540 g/l figure in SI 2012/1715 is a legal cap, not a measurement of these cans.

1

Stars and review depth

45%

The starting point of the score. A 4.5 from thousands of amazon.co.uk reviews sits above a 5.0 from three. Stars are the listing average, not a lab adhesion test.

2

A plastic-primer title

25%

The score is held down when the title is not a straightforward plastic primer. Artist gesso, and a title whose bullets describe a thinner, lose points here.

3

UK-labelled review texts

15%

Written reviews that are not labelled United Kingdom hold the score down, even when the star line itself is the amazon.co.uk average.

4

Fields that agree

15%

A dry time longer than the printed full cure, a gram weight that cannot be the fill, or a primer title beside thinner bullets is a deduction. It is not a second hidden number.

Plastic primer buying guide

Start with the job, then the plastics the maker names, then whether you need a thin film or a grey build coat, then the format and that product's own dry-time line. The notes below follow that order. None of these listings was lab-tested.

What to check before you buy plastic primer

A plastic primer is sold so later paint grips plastic. On amazon.co.uk this kind of search mixes grey automotive aerosols, a named plastic-primer spray, hobby sprays and airbrush bottles, and artist gesso that only mentions plastic among other surfaces. UK buyers split between bumper and trim work and miniature painting. Those jobs should not share one ranking.

Best for

  • Rigid car plastic the maker sheet names, in a grey aerosol
  • Miniatures in plastic, metal or resin, sprayed or airbrushed
  • A small craft piece where plastic is one listed gesso surface

Not ideal for

  • Polypropylene, polyethylene, or a plastic the sheet excludes
  • A colour-matched visible bumper, or any isocyanate two-pack
  • A closed room, HDPE, or PLA when the reviews already report a miss

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Ranking every can by stars

A 4.5 from thousands of miniature reviews and a 4.6 from a grey car aerosol are not the same tool. A 5.0 from three reviews does not show durability. Sort by the job first, then by the review sample for that job.

  2. 2

    Reading bumper as a waiver

A sheet can name bumpers and wheel trims and still exclude polyolefins, which means polypropylene and polyethylene. Flexible plastics and polystyrene can be out as well. HDPE is out on another maker list even when modified PP/EPDM is in.

    Using the wrong clock

One heavy coat, or a topcoat on another product's recoat time, is a common miss. Quote the dry line on the can you bought. If the title says primer and the bullets describe a thinner, do not treat that bottle as a settled primer.

What to weigh up

Job and named plastics

High

Decide the job before the brand. A bumper or a piece of rigid trim, a miniature, and a craft ground are different products, and a star line does not make them one league table. A grey aerosol builds a coloured film. A model spray or an airbrush bottle is a thin coat for figures. Artist gesso that lists plastic beside canvas is a ground for boards and small objects. A clear adhesion promoter for polypropylene blends is another product again, and a general grey can is not doing that job.

Format, dry time and evidence

High

Aerosols need real ventilation. An airbrush bottle suits miniatures when the weather is wet, and you need the compressor. Some bottles say ready to spray and also say to thin the primer if airflow is under 20 litres per minute. UK reviews on that kind of set split between extra thinning and a coat that feels too watery. Use the dry-time line on the can you bought.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Miniatures in mild air

You are priming plastic, metal or resin miniatures and you want the deepest review sample. Army Painter colour primer, matt white, model CP3002, is the top pick, at about £11.99 with 4.5 from 11,306 reviews. The bullets say 15–20 cm and thin passes. It is not water resistant, and it is not a bumper product.

Rigid car plastic

You are priming rigid car plastic the maker sheet allows, and you want the lowest well-reviewed grey can. Hycote grey plastic primer, model XUK612, is the best value, at about £7.99 with 4.6 from 1,410 reviews. The sheet excludes polyolefins, flexible plastics and polystyrene. Dry time and full cure both print as 24 hours.

Indoor airbrush figures

You prime resin or PVC miniatures indoors and you already have an airbrush. Vallejo surface primer, grey, model VJ73601, is about £8.06 with 4.6 from 2,030 reviews. The bottle is 60 ml, not a 400 ml can. One review reports no adhesion after soap and isopropyl alcohol.

Common questions about Plastic primers

Which plastic primer is the top pick in this comparison?
The top pick is the Army Painter colour primer, matt white, model CP3002, at about £11.99, with 4.5 from 11,306 reviews. That is the highest score in this set, and the deepest review sample. The score is for a miniature colour primer on metals, plastics and resins, not a bumper test. It is not water resistant. Dry time prints as 1 hour and full cure as 2 hours. This was not a lab test.
Which plastic primer is the best value?
The best value is the Hycote grey plastic primer, model XUK612, at about £7.99, with 4.6 from 1,410 reviews. It is the lowest price among the well-reviewed grey aerosols, one point under the top score. The listing says plastic and car use. Hycote's sheet still excludes polyolefins, flexible plastics and polystyrene. Printed dry time and full cure are both 24 hours. The best-value choice is price against review depth, not a pass for every bumper plastic.
How much does plastic primer cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this amazon.co.uk set, grey aerosols run from about £7.99 for 400 ml to about £9.94 for 500 ml. One 400 ml can is about £13.95. Hobby sprays and bottles sit from about £8.06 to about £11.99, and £8.06 buys 60 ml. The upper end here is about £14.99. These are stored shelf prices, not a live basket. On these prices, the larger aerosols cost less per litre than the small bottles.
What should you check before you buy plastic primer?
Check the job first: a bumper or trim, a miniature, or a craft ground. Then the plastics the maker names. A title that says plastic is not a waiver for polypropylene. Then the film, the format, and that can's own dry-time line. Do not copy one product's recoat clock onto another. A primer for plaster is a different product, compared under penetrating primer.
Does plastic primer work on a polypropylene bumper?
No listing here is a pass for every bumper. Hycote's sheet allows many rigid plastics, including bumpers and wheel trims, and excludes flexible plastics and polyolefins, which means polypropylene and polyethylene. Montana's list includes modified PP/EPDM and excludes HDPE. A clear PP-EPDM adhesion promoter is a different product and is not one of these nine. Read the code on the part. If the plastic is unknown and already peeling in sheets, call a professional.
Should you spray or airbrush plastic primer on miniatures?
A miniature wants a thin film, not a heavy grey build coat. The matt white 400 ml spray is for metals, plastics and resins, with bullets that say 15–20 cm and short bursts, in mild air. A 60 ml grey bottle is for airbrushing indoors when a British week is wet. UK reviews of that bottle describe little thinning, and one miss after soap and isopropyl alcohol. A bumper aerosol is the wrong film if you need to keep figure detail.
Is artist gesso a plastic primer?
The 513 ml white gel is artist gesso for acrylic and oil painting. Plastic is one surface beside canvas, wood, paper, terracotta and concrete. It is not water resistant, and dry time is not stated. One UK review calls it an undercoat for painting plastic, and another calls the gel very thick. It can sit under paint on a small craft piece. It is the wrong product for a wheel trim, a bumper, or a miniature that must keep sharp edges.
When should you call a professional instead of using a household can?
Call a professional for a colour-matched visible bumper, any isocyanate two-pack, an unknown plastic that is already peeling in sheets, or a large indoor spray with no extraction and other people nearby. COSHH applies when spraying is work. These listings do not describe a two-pack hardener, which is not proof a can is isocyanate-free. A non-toxic bullet is not a closed-room permit. Aerosols are flammable.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Army Painter colour primer, matt white, model CP3002, at about £11.99. It has 4.5 from 11,306 reviews, the deepest sample in this set, and the highest score. The pick is the review depth of a model primer. It is not a claim that this spray belongs on a polypropylene bumper. The best value is the Hycote grey plastic primer, model XUK612, at about £7.99, with 4.6 from 1,410 reviews. It is the lowest price among the well-reviewed grey aerosols, one point under the top score. Hycote's sheet still excludes polyolefins.
